Half devoured gyro
Dominic C.

I will not bury the lead here. Akropolis is a fantastic authentic Greek restaurant without a doubt. I first visited Akropolis about eight years ago. My cousin, who lives in St. James invited a bunch of the family out for a meal. At the time it was about 45 minutes to an hour from where I lived. I thought it was fantastic, but I was disappointed that it was so far away. About 3 1/2 years ago, we moved closer to it and I've been there many times since. Today I grabbed a Gyro to go. However, I have had many great meals there. One of the great things about this restaurant is that they offer chickpea salad and pita bread when you arrive. The salad is fantastic. Somehow this type of service is a lost art? Their entrées are also really good. They have a fantastic egg lemon soup. I would also highly recommend the spanakopita as well as the falafel appetizer . For the main course, I would definitely recommend the mixed grill. If you're like me and I have trouble making up your mind this solves your problem. My wife is not a huge fan of Greek food. But she is a huge fan of burgers. The burgers here are outstanding as well as the fries. Close it out with the baklava and I think you are good to go. Definitely check this place out. It is one of the few places that still serve good quality authentic food with great portions at a reasonable price.

Delicious as always, family style is the way to go! Everything was served fast, warm, and full of flavor. Kind, friendly staff that treats you like family. Adorable, cozy interior. A great place for a Greek meal, or takeout!

The best greek food in Long Island hands down....been coming here for a long time! Very warm and friendly staff

Mixed grill (selected the sausage, veal, and chicken souvlaki)

It was our first time here at the restaurant and I'm glad we did. Walking in, it felt like the place has been there for years and it has this charming fixture to the place and it was quite busy with probably a lot of regulars. We didn't have to wait far too long for table for two. We were greeted with free chick peas salad and some bread. The salad was really good and that was a great start to the rest of the meal. I ordered the sliced lamb and beef gyro sandwich for $13. Let me tell you, the portion of the gyro along with all the fixings especially the chopped lettuce was stupendous. Most important of all, the beef was absolutely tender and no dried corners whatsoever. We also got the mixed grill where we got to pick 3 proteins, so we selected the veal, sausage, and chicken souvlaki for $30. We upcharged that by $6 additional for a side of soup, choice of soft drink or coffee or tea, and a dessert. It was so worth it. All the meat especially the veal was so tender. Love it when a place knows how to cook the meat to perfection without overdoing it. The mixed grill came with rice pilaf and green beans. But definitely the star was the meats. When it came to dessert, we got the spomuni truffle ice cream with an upcharge of $3. All in all, amazing food, real down to earth excellent service and care and certainly will come back in the future.

Still my favorite Greek spot in the area. I have tried almost every local spot and Akropolis is the best. Their portion sizes and quality/flavor is unmatched. One of my new favorite items is the Greek Country Salad. It tastes so fresh and authentic. The grape leaves that come on top are phenomenal. The lemon chicken soup is always a favorite too in addition to the gyros. They also have the best tzatziki! Pick up orders are always ready quickly and the restaurant is always packed. Inside of the restaurant is very relax ambiance, no frills but still nice! The only downside is they are closed on Sundays.

The wait was short and the food was incredibly fresh and very well made. It was one of the better chicken gyros that I've had, it was clearly roasted and seasoned perfectly. Their tzatziki sauce is creamy and very delicious, a perfect compliment to the savory bowl that I got with my choices that were saltier (olives and feta). I love that the portion size was large enough that I had it leftover for lunch again the next day. If you're in the St. James area, I would highly suggest checking this spot out asap.

I saw the great reviews for this place and I live super close so we decided to give it a try. Pretty much everything was great. I had a shrimp yero bowl with rice, which was pretty tasty. I was really surprised by the zucchini and eggplant chips, I wasn't expecting to like them, but I gave them a try. They are better than potato chips for sure. Very light and crispy. None of the food was too heavy or too dry. My wife loved their tzatziki sauce. We go to the Greek fair every year and really like all the fresh food they make there. This restaurant was even better than that. Definitely worth a try if you are nearby or in the mood for Greek food.

From talking on the phone, I could tell this is a family-owned business and they pry on giving great customer service. Walking in, we were immediately greeted to our table. There were other patrons and I could sense that these are probably local, life-long customers. So from that point, I get a sense of camaraderie with the owners and patrons. Seated down, we were offered pita bread with tzatziki sauce along with chick pea salad. I had ordered the beef and lamb gyro with rice as my side and a small Greek salad. They gyro itself was fine, and my only comment is I wish the pita bread was softer. My son got the pastitsio which is almost kind of like lasagna. He didn't enjoy that all too much and felt it was too creamy. My wife got the Athenian tilapia with mushrooms and rice, along with a chicken lemon soup. She enjoyed her dish and commented on how temperature hot that is...which is a good thing. All in all, I would give it 3 strong stars based on this visit as I was expecting more from my gyro and the same for my son with his entree. Their customer service definitely is to be commended for.

The prices were fair(ish) but everything else not so much. -Gyro Sandwich: 3/5, I will admit the meat was actually pretty delicious and there was a ton of it..but after that this was pretty forgettable. Shredded lettuce and onion thrown on top and called a sandwich. The fries it came with kind of sucked, and the yogurt sauce was nothing special. -Chicken over rice platter: 2/5, we actually laughed when we opened this. A single skewer broken in half over a bed of bland brown rice for $10. Not very enjoyable...at all. The sandwich combo also came with a drink so when I selected coke I assumed I'd be getting a can like most other Greek spots do...BUT you know what they say when you assume!! Instead I received a small paper cup Saran wrapped up with half the drink soaked into it..to top it off it was flat. Like drinking water with coke flavor. You order at the counter and there are a few tables to sit at. Being this is my first time, I will mention while writing this in a little annoyed because I didn't look at the menu close enough but the owner at the counter shoulder and could've took me this when ordering. I ordered the lamb gyro which was overstuffed and delicious. He asked if I wanted lettuce tomatoes and onion and I said yes (this is usually on a gyro). Quickly scanning the menu advice, I didn't see any option to make the gyro a combination with fries, so I ordered the side of fries $6.50. While sitting to eat, I was looking over the menu more and noticed that there was an option to make any sandwich an original which means..... add fries instead of lettuce tomatoes for $1. I would've gone this route if I saw that. I guess live and learn, my mistake but he should've told me of that option. Next time and I will let him know this, but I will not let it negatively affect my review. (Update) another person just came in and ordered the same so I opened my mouth to let him know about the $1 option. The owner then said that it was fried in the sandwich).
