I'm really sad to say that I never got to taste anything here. I showed up around 10am on a Tuesday and stood in the door for a while. I like the decor - it's a classic diner with the flat-top grill right behind the counter for all to see. The art is kitschy and the music is good. However, the staff suck. Flat out rude to start - I asked to be seated at the counter and was ignored. I sat down and was yelled at to go wait at the door. Then the same woman tells me I can come sit at the counter now, as opposed to a minute ago? I don't follow. I flipped through the sizable menu and made my selection - And waited... And waited.... And waited..... I even left my seat and used the bathroom before I continued to wait. All told, I waited almost 45 minutes to be served and was never even acknowledged, apart for the yelling incident. Trust me. I won't be back. read more

Okay, so I was super excited that this place opened back up because I had been dying to go here on late after-drinking nights when there was no where else to go. Last time I tried to go, it turned out the place closed. But yay! It's back! I went this morning, and it was terrible. There were maybe 8 different waiters, none of whom seemed to know what they were doing. When I first walked in, it took five minutes to be acknowledged, despite the fact that there were three employees standing next to me bickering loudly about something. Not very professional if you ask me. We were finally sat, and looked over the menu. The prices are definitely reasonable. Pretty much your average breakfast fare, $4.99 french toast $3something for one egg, hash brown, toast. I got the french toast, I requested whipped cream on them. My friend got chocolate chip pancakes. After placing our order, we didn't get our food for maybe twenty minutes. It was busy, so this didn't bother me too much, what DID bother me is that our food was cold when we got it. And mine didn't have whipped cream. I was starving, so I didn't bother waiting another ten minutes to ask our aloof waitress to bring me whipped cream. It wasn't too great, either. I wish I had ordered eggs, as those are harder to screw up. I'm definitely going to wait a bit longer to let them get back on their feet before trying here again. All in all, it was a disappointment. Which can probably be mostly because it just re-opened, but still. Bad service is bad service. read more

Forget everything you thought about the old Al Mac's and give the new one a shot! I used to LOATHE Al Mac's and the grouchy, hungover waitresses and sticky booths and greasy food. But now it's all fresh inside and the wait staff are actually friendly and while the breakfast menu is essentially the same, the quality of food is MUCH better. Nice, thick pieces of toast, big fluffy omelettes, and herbed homefries that are delicious. I may just make the trek back to the Dirty Riv a little more frequently now. read more

Went there once over the summer for lunch and got a chicken parm. that was tasty with a great side of fries. Came back this evening to get a birthday dinner with my partner and was blown away by how good it was. I read that they have been working out some new-owner kinks, I feel like they're really getting it sorted. They were hosting a classic car night so the diner looked its shiny best with a bunch of neat hot rods outside. Half the diner was full up with people but there was still space for us and the service was totally fine. We both ordered off the specials menu. I got the buttermilk fried chicken which was really some of the best fried chicken I've had. Tasty crunchy coating, not at all greasy, spicy without being just your average salt/pepper/paprika flavors. It came with a side of mashed potatoes and oven roasted carrots both of which were prepared well and all served on a nice plate. Partner had pork chops served with a side of tender green beans, some sort of cabbage (which I did not try) and a potato pancake. Both portions were ample for the prices and everyone there was chatty and friendly. This place has much better than average diner food all served up in a bright and friendly atmosphere that is more spacious than a lot of the other diners in the local area. This place was a mainstay of childhood, so I was excited to hear that it had reopened under new management. Alas, they still have *a lot* of kinks to work out in terms of food prep and service. While I appreciate the effort to create a nicer diner experience (read: glass instead of plastic / clean menus instead of greasy ones), some choices seemed only to put the waitstaff underwater. On a Sunday morning we watched staff struggle to get to their tables (partially expected in a new place w/ new staff) and then be slowed down even further by the absurdity of filling a teeny-tiny milk and / or syrup ramekin for each customer. The distribution of tables was also questionable, as some servers were killing themselves and others appeared to be underwhelmed by the amount of work they had. I also watched a woman who appeared to be the manager (or maybe owner?) scolding servers, standing in their way behind the counter, but not appearing to do much to help them out . And the food. Not so hot. They were out of both home fries and bacon at 10am on Sunday. My husband's omelet was visibly burnt (and folded inward, so you couldn't initially see it) and the kid's pancakes were strangely tough. On the up side, the server was friendly and apologetic and the rye toast was good. read more

Needs staff. That smiles. Couldn't eat or get a drink. Apparently people called in and the woman at the register was somewhat rude. Instead of, "Im sorry, we're short handed but I can help you...." it was more of a "hey I'll get to it when I can" attitude. She even had the audacity to argue with some guy who was also asking for service. He was polite. She was a horror show. Whoever she is - go home! You're cranky! I went here on a Sunday and this place was packed. After waiting 10 minuets to be seated, the waitress was terrible in terms of customer service. We also NEVER ended up getting our food and ordered it to go instead after 45 minuets. I'm a little disappointed to be honest. Such a nice little retro diner and good prices. Pulling up in the parking lot Al Mac's looks like an old fashioned diner right out of the 1950s. Stepping inside you get the same feel. There's a long counter at the front where you can watch the cook prepare meals, or sit at one of the booths along the windows. It felt a little greasy/dirty inside but I didn't think twice about it considering how old the diner was anyways. That's what you should expect when you're stepping back in time to eat. Apparently this place is open pretty late after all the bars get out and seems to be a hot spot for late night food. I was only there at 10am so unfortunately i didn't get to see the night time sights. Food was cheap, I just had the belgium waffle. Friends tried the hamburgers and fries. Service was a little slow considering there seemed to only be two waitresses in the entire place. Cheap, good prices. read more

Came back after new owners took over and the food was much improved. The bacon was amazing, French toast was good too. My friend had an egg sandwich which she said was excellent. The vibe was positive and the staff was friendly (also much improved). What prevents me from giving it a 5 star rating is that it is so cold in there. The food comes out nice and hot but it gets cold very quickly because of the air temp. I went back once but walked in and right out because I knew I would be eating a cold breakfast. I would love to make this a regular breakfast place because it serves it until 3pm but it's just too cold, even on days when a/c is not needed. read more

Wow! Now this 21st Century diner food. I had the corn beef sandwich, and it melted in my mouth. When I said how pleased I was, the waitress told me that Al Mac's makes its own corn beef. Then I said how much I enjoyed the pickles and cole slaw, and again I was told that Al Mac's makes their own pickles and cole slaw. I put my hand up, and said, "And now you're going to tell me that Al Mac's makes their own potato chips?" The waitree grinned, and said, "Yup!" Came in yesterday for lunch with my father and my son. Initially we were going to get burgers but we were told they had run out and were in the process of getting more but it would be a little while, so we opted to get something else. My son had a bacon egg and cheese on croissant, my father had an omelette w/ home fries and I had the bbq chicken sandwich. (All were good) my sandwich came out a few minutes after their food had already come out no biggie for me as I'm not petty. But they comped my sandwich for the wait and for running out of burgers and even gave my son an Oreo milkshake which by the way was phenomenal. Great customer service. This place is great and I can't recommend it enough! I had the Irish Benedict with house- made corned beef hash and everything was fantastic, and fresh. Their homemade desserts are also super delicious, and I was really impressed by the thoughtfulness and care put into everything I tasted. The strawberry shortcake was generous and delicious. The homemade biscuits had the perfect acidity and salinity to balance the sweetness of the strawberries and cream. The service was kind and caring and the atmosphere was perfect, authentic American diner (but with WAY BETTER food than any other greasy spoon!) Go out of your way to eat here. read more

I just moved to Fall River area about a month ago and noticed this place wasn't too far for me. I'm giving this rating for their breakfast only. The staff was friendly and attentive but the food was not as great. The homefries were frozen potatoes that were still cold and the eggs tasted like they were a few days old. I ordered the pecan cinnamon pancake and saw that the batter for pancakes were kept in a 5 gallon bucket (which I understand for volume purposes) but also kept on the floor. The "cinnamon" was a cinnamon type butter that they serve to you in a disposable cup. I want to try to like this place so my hopes are lunch and dinner are better than breakfast. read more

I have been to Al Mac's Diner a few times for breakfast with my family and never really had a problem. The service is usually good and the food is usually decent. I had never been to the diner for lunch until last week and I will NEVER go there for the lunch again! I am so embarrassed to have invited one of my good friends out to eat at Al Mac's. I get an hour lunch break and the diner is not far from my work so I thought it would be a good choice. The place was a little busy but not as busy as I expected. It took the waitress about 10 minutes to take our drink order (JUST our drink order). It took her another 10 minutes to take our food order. My friend and I both decided on the tuna melt (quick and easy sandwich). Another 10 minutes goes by and the waitress comes back to tell us that there is only enough tuna for one sandwich. My friend was nice enough to let me have the tuna and she ordered a BLT sandwich instead. Five minutes later, the waitress comes back and says that there is NO tuna. By this point, I'm getting a little irritated but I end up ordering a grilled cheese sandwich. Maybe about five more minutes go by and I overhear our waitress reading our order out to the cook. By this point, I'm "hangry" and I flag the waitress down to tell her that I'm on my lunch break and will probably have to take my order to go. She apologizes and told me that she understood. Ten minutes later, we get our sandwiches and they're both burnt and didn't even look edible. This was the first time that I have ever walked out of a restaurant. I love Al Macs. It's an awesome 50's diner right off the highway, perfect for those late drunk nights. It's pretty cheap too... ten bucks, and your good for a huge breakfast. I love the mini juke boxes at the tables. Tons of old back in the day songs to choose from. Just thinking of it makes me crave some pancakes and home fries. I can't wait until my next drunk night. =) read more

I haven't been to Almac's in years and I was very disappointed. Two breakfasts, with tip, $42.00. It was not worth the money. It was not bad, but not great for $42.00 for breakfast. Ordered a side of corn beef hash, it was $7.00 and it looked like I got about a half cup with frozen potatoes. It was not the same as I have had. Not for me. This place has really gone down the tubes. I ordered a bagel sandwich with bacon & cheese and my boyfriend ordered a steak omelet with corned beef hash. His food came out first and our waitress brought it back into the kitchen to sit under the heat lamps. We were seated directly across from the grill and my bagel sandwich hadn't even been started at this point. Our waitress threw some dirty looks towards the grill area, but said nothing to the grill cook as she socialized with the wait staff and cooks in the back. It was 14 minutes from the time my boyfriend's food was done until my food was done. My bacon was dry and overcooked. The bagels are straight from stop and shop. The coffee was terrible. As for the wait staff, our waitress was overly nice in a creepy way and although she was attentive enough she left us without cream and we had to grab it off another table. The other waitress on spent the entire time we were there gossiping with the grill cook. I could've made myself a much better breakfast and saved myself $30 and a huge disappointment. read more

Looks are deceiving! I never tried Al Mac's Diner until the other day and I was impressed. The place has the curb appeal of an old diner but is in a less-than desirable area of Fall River so we never tried it until someone suggested stopping in for breakfast. The waitress was very friendly and efficient, our breakfast arrived quickly, the french toast was good, and the biscuit sandwich will change your whole day! Lastly grab a coffee milk. read more

If you'd asked me for a review of this place a few years ago, it would've been 1 star. It used to be so bad that I had be convinced to come back for lunch one day. I'm glad I went back. The food quality has dramatically improved. The corn beef hash and eggs was delicious. The toast was also great. Giving it 4 stars because the coffee still sucks. I said last year during Al Mac's grand reopening that I would update my review to reflect how things were once they got through their growing pains and it's such a shame that nothing really improved with time. I had been coming here almost monthly since the last update and things flucuated from visit to visit so much that I felt like I couldn't update my review until their service evened out a bit more. I ate here twice over the past two months with the Groupon special and each time was worse than the last. Today's lack of quality service and edible food was the final nail in the coffin. The cool decor of the retro diner is not enough to make up for the flaws in the restaurant's service and subpar food. Today, I ordered three different items off their lunch menu and was told each time the item was sold out. Twice our waitress knew right away and the third time she had to come back and tell me after I had put in my order. Her excuse was they were "changing the menu" so some items had been out for awhile. Maybe some sort of signage in the front alerting customers to that would be nice? All of the food I tried to order were lunch items since I didn't really feel like breakfast. At Al Mac's, you can really tell that breakfast food is their bread and butter. If they want to be a breakfast-exclusive restaurant they should just go that way permanently instead of neglecting two whole pages of their menu offerings and frustrating customers who went there with the intention of ordering non-breakfast food. I finally ended up just getting a house salad and a cup of tomato bisque and both items were bland and flavorless. So disappointing, I hope Al Mac's gets their act together soon since it's been a staple in my life since childhood. read more
