They were the first to diagnose her heart condition and were there until the end. I almost don't want to recommend them because they are so booked out. Brought our furry friend for her yearly with Dr. Kristin, as usual she and her assistant are a delight. Even though it was a COVID visit, they made us feel as if we were totally involved in the exam, explaining all that is going on and happy to answer questions as they come up (they come get your pet from the car and conference call you in on the visit). I would only take away half a star if I could for review of a test we had done earlier. It took a couple of days and I had to call them looking for results, however it may only be because of the front office staff or COVID. I completely trust the team there and would not hesitate to recommend them. read more

We moved across the state, and Alameda Pet Hospital refuses to release prescription information to third party retailers so that we can purchase needed prescription food or medications in person from our local retailer. It's completely unethical and it's shameful that any Vet would try to force you into buying from their online store ONLY. You don't pay for an eye test and then the optometrist refuses to give you the prescription, do you? And then you have to buy through them even if you don't live there anymore? In what world?! Is this not insanity?! It's not like we received a free Vet appointment and signed some one year membership in return for purchasing all our products from them. We're talking prescription dog food and skin medications and these hustlers somehow think it's appropriate to act as if they're some sort of required middle man for any purchases. The strong arming is too much at this point, we'll be contacting the BBB and other relevant organizations. We paid for our examinations independent of any additional purchases, so it really makes no sense to me how they feel as though they're operating in good faith when seemingly they're trying to unwittingly lock people into their retail network. Not what I signed up for! Shame on you, Alameda Pet Hospital! You're nothing more than capitalistic charlatans masquerading as professionals. I don't know what has happened to this place but it has lost its heart. We took our cat here bc her Feline Herpes started to flare up after we returned from vacation. When we first took her in she was eating and drinking well. After they did the exam, the doctor told us, they normally give IV fluids, but didn't say there was any indication she was dehydrated and after we denied it, the service went downhill from there. We got antibiotics that weren't helping... we called back to see if we should try anti virals and they said yes, but said it could be cancer and we should do additional testing (ultrasound to look for cancer). Wouldn't this be a suggestion after trying to heal with the most common issue, especially since you know there is an underlying virus issue?!? Since then we have made multiple calls to try and get the new prescription but it's now been two weeks later and we continue to get the run around. 1. The doctor was waiting on your response on your pharmacy but we asked for the written prescription. 2. The office manager will draft it today... when that didn't happen, the next day we left a message with no answer. 3. The following day we were told the office manager is out and after pleading and crying to get it over, the lady who answered the phone said the dosing for the prescription was never written in the file and needed to ask another Dr since ours was off. She promised to get back to us that day (Friday) and still nothing. My poor baby is suffering and doesn't want to eat anymore bc she can't smell her food so we have been syringe feeding her twice a day to make sure she gets food and water. It's like this place doesn't care at all for the suffering of animals. I'm appalled and saddened. I don't recommend anyone going here unless you're just getting your regular shots. I'm trying to get my girl into a new vet but that is difficult. How can we trust another place after being up-sold for not necessary treatment at the time and then ghosted by a place we thought we trusted. Dr. Wagner is amazing! I recently moved from Sacramento with my 14 year old sheltie and I can confidentially say this is one of the best clinic I have ever been to. A friend of ours recommended Dr. Harris and we first brought our Ginger here. At the time of her first few visits she was blind & had well-managed diabetes. The first visits for both our dogs went well. We really loved how Dr. Harris took the time to speak with us, sometimes at length, and we liked the care she showed our pets. There were a handful of visits with Dr. Harris prior to 2019 that we were very happy with. May 2019: Ginger unfortunately had a couple isolated seizure events. We always appreciated the time Dr. Harris spent with us, listening to our theories and not completely dismissing them. We spent the next year tracking every single seizure and her blood sugar in case it was relative. Interestingly, we found her seizures to be happening within the same 3 hour timeframe after her meals. The main advice the vet could give us was telling us we could take her somewhere to have an MRI to further diagnose and prescribe zonisamide. We didn't like the seizure meds. It made her a shell of herself and mostly just sedated all the time. She also was getting skin rashes which we attributed to the meds. Sometimes she'd still have seizures, too. We got to the point where upping the dosage just didn't seem like the right answer and more and more we decided it was food related. We changed her from a high quality fish-based kibble over to a home-cooked chicken diet as a last ditch effort because it broke our heart to see her having bad seizures and taking so long to get back to normal after. Remarkably, her seizures stopped. For the next few months things went much better. She still had seizures but it was much less frequent and we had actually gotten her completely off her seizure medications. We attributed the occasional seizures to a low threshold from all the vaccines, flea meds, food allergies, diabetes, etc. At the end of 2019 the GI issues started. Both our dogs had diarrhea and we took them both in to get some help. Out of desperation we scheduled with Dr. Buchinger as Dr. Harris was unavailable. She met us with skepticism and judgement. She told us Ginger's diabetes was out of control and that's why she was so thin, she looked at us like we were crazy when we mentioned her seizures were diet related and after that visit she didn't do ANYTHING to help with Ginger but charge us $25 to check her Blood Glucose with the same tester we had at home and after we told them we check it regularly. They determined from that and her weight loss that we weren't giving her enough insulin. They didn't address their dehydration or anything. They only did a blood panel on our other dog. Per Dr. Buchinger's advice, we upped Ginger's insulin and the next two days were a battle with hypoglycemic seizure events. Two weeks later the GI issues still existed; they were losing more weight and even more dehydrated. We considered taking them elsewhere, but we decided to give Alameda Pet Hospital one last shot and made sure to get Dr. Harris this time. We, once again, appreciated Dr. Harris' taking the time to listen to us and try to come up with a plan. Unfortunately, she was limited in her own expertise to give us much help. At this visit she tested their stool for parasites, she considered they had an allergy to chicken so she sent us home with some Hill's prescription food to try for both and although we really didn't want to go back to any kind of store bought food, we did what she suggested. They also treated Reese with subcutaneous fluids but did nothing for Ginger's dehydration at all. The next two days were a rollercoaster: The GI issues were magically fixed but after MUCH research and the vet's recommendations we chose a food that was the highest quality food, not 24 hours later, Ginger had her second ever seizure cluster event. It was a bad one and we took her to get emergency care. Unfortunately that day was the last day we ever had our normal girl. After staying for a couple nights at the Emergency Vet, she returned to us on a second seizure medication as well as the one we worked so hard to get her off that ultimately caused too many side effects and a few months later we lost her. While we know Dr. Harris did as much as she knew to do to help us, we still have had our trust ruined with this place and most traditional vet care and store bought/prescription diet foods. Our other dog is healthy and happy after following INCREDIBLE nutrition advice (that we tried and desperately failed to receive from Alameda Pet Hospital) from Creature Comforts on a 100% home-cooked diet. read more

After moving to Alameda last year, I started to take my dogs there for a regular vet visit. Upon the first visit to the Alameda clinic, I was told that I should consider doing a bunch of EXPENSIVE, UNNECESSARY, and UNDIAGNOSED test for my 4-Year-old dog, who is super healthy. The entire visit the doctor seemed so focused on getting me to agree to all these tests and not pay attention to the overall checkup which they charge a lot of money for. However, I still gave it the benefit of doubt and tried out with another vet at the facility. This time around we got Dr. Wagner. She is a decent vet, seems to care about the patient, and is pleasant to talk to. Unfortunately, she too recommended a bunch of unwanted tests that would be beneficial for my dog in her words. I once again didn't think too much of it and didn't take any of those "recommended" tests. About 4-5 months back, I once again needed to visit the vet since my dog needed to get the required vaccine for the year. Simple right, just a couple of shots, and we should be on our way. Unfortunately, didn't go down like that. First, they didn't have all the shots available for the day even though I had scheduled the appointment ahead of time, so this led to me coming in twice and getting the shots for my pet. Which is still fine but they charge you a hefty health & wellness checkup fee EVERYTIME YOU SET FOOT IN THEIR facility, even if it's a shortcoming on their end. SUPER UNORGANIZED AND HAVE NO COURTESY FOR YOUR TIME. Also, on the same visit, they inform me that my dog needs a tooth extraction. All of the sudden, out of nowhere we get a recommendation for an extraction. Where my dog hadn't been showing any discomfort or anything. This would require my dog to go under and would be surgery. So, I really wanted to make sure this is needed but at the same time, I don't want my dog to be in any pain. So I consulted with doctor Wagner, she told us that dogs chip their tooth sometimes, and since my dog had lived on streets before we adopted her, she might have chipped it there. Sounded fair so I went ahead and booked the appointment for the extraction. However, I was still not convinced and afraid for my dog's well-being at the same time. Also, the estimate for the extraction they gave was between $900-$1200. Needless to say, I got a second opinion. The tooth Alameda pet hospital said needed to be extracted is not even chipped and is in perfect condition. Please avoid them because when I needed them in an actual emergency, my dog broke his dew claw and was bleeding profusely, I took him there in emergency thinking this is my regular vet, THEY TURN ME AWAY. I waited outside their facility from 7:30 am- 8 am, with my bleeding and whimpering dog in my lap. They proceeded to tell me they have no slots open and that for the emergency they have 6-7hrs of wait time. I couldn't keep my pet in that much pain for that long of a time, so I took him some other vet. They were able to fix him up in under 20 min because all that was needed was to remove the damaged part of the dewclaw (like our nails) and treat him with some pain and infection meds. THIS FACILITY IS JUST A FRONT TO GET PATIENTS TO PAY FOR EXPENSIVE TEST AND PROCEDURES WHICH ARE NOT NEEDED. THEY DO NOT PROVIDE CARE OR CONSULT. PLEASE, IF YOUR PET HAS A REAL ISSUE, AND YOU CARE ABOUT THEIR WELLBEING DON'T BRING THEM HERE. read more

We we should have changed long ago. -This team was Visibly and audibly intimidated by Bella's injuries POST surgery - the only at home care instructions this team was able to provide at any point was medication instructions- which are already on the label - both x Rays we have had taken here had to be RE DONE - we have been expected to/ paid for the retake for the first set and will never be back as for the second set - the owner of this business knows that neither set of XRays were done with proper angles and visibility and will not acknowledge that or refund us our money! $300 a set of XRays - inability to send us home with a recovery plan at any point If you pay for a service in full you should receive that service in full. Alameda Veterinary Hospital stole our money. I can't express enough how unprofessional and unqualified this animal hospital has been in our experience. Please take your babies somewhere else. I was searching to establish care for my little dog because we had moved to the island. This place is great! All of the staff members were so kind. Their work culture is really great; you can tell how well everyone gets along with each other. They did a check up and took their time. They even gave me some Trifexis to try out! I really appreciated that. They do boarding as well. They have to assess your pet's temperament prior to allowing your dog to be boarded there. This determines if your pet can tolerate boarding at their facility and also ensures the safety of both your pet and their staff members. read more

The Peeps working here have got to be the most adorable folks on the face of the Planet. They not only seriously make a careful study of your pets, but they also very studiously will make outside references if they aren't certain. It was so refreshing to be referred to a lagomorph expert outside of their practice in our case for a bunny we had adopted back in the day. This practice is cool that way. Also, the folks here have currently helped me so much out with my elderly wolf hybrid husky shepherd mix Emma (AKA "Emma-Bee") I'd adopted 13 years back from the SPCA. She's been an unbelievable adorable reciprocal source of comfort for me over the years. Vet Tech's at this Hospital are ever so wonderful. For example: Corey is adorable for Emma. Imagine having a very large dog having a Grand Mal seizure in your car whilst passing Park Street during rush hour traffic surveillance on Park Street in Alameda. It was traumatic but I think the traffic police saw where we were headed and were very kind about the emergency! Cory is so en pointe that he can just swoop up your beloved sweet large dog even with her large distrusting wolf non-wagging broomstick tail immediately out of the car. Cory maintains her trust and puts her promptly into examination when she was not even given a chance to be cross about it? That's a gift! He deserves many cuddles for this. My 7 year old Weimaraner has suddenly developed a taste for chocolate. The sneaky bastard poached about 1.5 pounds of individually wrapped Ghirardelli squares that we'd gotten as a holiday gift. Now... Der Hund once ate a 2 pound ballotin of Godiva chocolates, and after a frantic call to the vet, I was assured that the ratio between his weight (85 pounds) and the 2 pound chocolates, he had not ingested a toxic dosage. But just to teach him a lesson, I took him to the vet, where they administered a purgative to induce vomiting. I naively thought that if he had a negative experience connected to chocolate, he wouldn't do it again. This time, I was extremely concerned because he was harfing up largely intact pink, green and gold wrappers, with the chocolate still inside, regurgitated his breakfast... and was not passing any particularly festive looking poops. My husband and I were freaking out, thinking: bloat; torsion of the bowel; or blockage. I called Alameda Pet Hospital and they were able to give me a 4:00pm same day appointment after gathering some information and verifying that he was still pooping and eating and did not appear to be under any duress, physically. Two minutes after I hung up the phone, Der Hund harfed up a bunch of breakfast kibble and wrappers... so I called back and they said they could accommodate me within an hour. I have mixed feelings about the experience: the front desk person ignored me for a solid 3 minutes while I was standing at the counter, patiently waiting for her to stop avoiding eye contact. Afterall, this was our first appointment and obviously there was paperwork to be completed. I don't like to be ignored. The hospital is also currently doing a major renovation, so there was plastic and drywall all over the place... and I was informed that should surgical treatment be required, Der Hund would have to be referred out since the dust did not allow for a clean surgical suite. I'm really more of a one-stop shopper - if my animals have an emergency, I don't want to make two or three separate stops. Admittedly, I was spoiled by the previous regional pet hospital (review forthcoming) in Orange County where they did EVERYTHING in a clean, professional environment, with staffing 24/7. The exam rooms are on the small side, but I have to say that Dr. Jen Dalmasso is delightful. She was very reassuring; she listened to our concerns and checked Der Hund over with the utmost attention. She also did a histological analysis of a "bubble" under Der Hund's right forearm that turned out to be just a simple fatty lipoma. Dr. Dalmasso also diagnosed a slight ear infection and gave us medicine for Der Hund... Oh, and Dr. Dalmasso is extremely ethical; I said I wanted an x-ray to rule out a blockage... and she told me that the wrappers would not be visible on the film, because they were not metallic. She assured me also that she did not feel any kind of bloating or tension in Der Hund's belly and even did a little rectal exam to verify that his digestive tract was still working. I was extremely grateful that Dr. Dalmasso did not "sell" me any unnecessary diagnostic procedures to bump up our tab. She also gave us some tips (20 mgs. of Zantac) for Der Hund's upset tummy, and in the future, if he ingests something undesireable and somewhat pokey (like a small Christmas light) or more chocolate... she said that feeding the dog 3-4 slices of white bread (like Wonder) because it acts like a buffer and helps to expedite the passing of said undesireable matter. Again: I'm not making recommendations on how you should handle your pet emergencies - but I'm just saying that Dr. Dalmasso was very generous with less-invasive measures... which I thought was very cool. Our bill for all of that: the same day exam, the ear infection medication, the histological exam for his fatty lipoma, the hiney poke - was only $122. We left feeling very satisfied (less the inattentive front desk person and taking into consideration that they currently do not have surgery suites available). I would definitely go there again, for routine exams... and we'll see how things look after their renovation project is complete. read more

My elderly Chihuahua/Poodle was in immense eye pain and needed her eye removed. I searched all over the bay area for an experienced vet to remove her eye. As you can imagine removing an eye is an incredibly emotional process. My friend finally reccommended Dr. Harris of Alameda Pet Hosptial, and she made doing this tremendously difficult task dare I say, easy, for both my dog and me. Dr. Harris was efficient, respectful, kind, experienced, and extremely-knowledgeable. Dr. Harris did an absolutely fabulous job explaining the process of an eye removal in a down to earth way. She did a beautiful job and managed to remove 3 of my sweet dog's teeth in the process. My dog was wagging her tail when I picked her up and was in exceptionally loving hands that brought her to my car with detailed after-care instructions and Rx. Also, the staff at Alameda Pet Hospital get an A+ for customer service! Their kindness, professionalism, and the time they took to provide needed details was so calming and helpful. I can tell how much they love animals. Their front desk is often busy which is a testimony to their good practices. The prices were fair! I've been taking my little Rory here since she was a puppy-- Dr. Harris and Dr. Wagner are amazing doctors who clearly have a love for animals. They are honest with treatment plans, make mindful recommendations for people who may or may not be on a budget, and outline all our options to us clearly every time we're there. The staff here are friendly and always greet us with warm welcomes as they always seem to remember us. Whenever Rory has any problems I feel comfortable calling them for advice and they are quick to communicate information to the doctors and calling back immediately. This vet is beyond 5 stars in my mind. I have taken my cats and dogs to them for years and they have always been sympathetic, friendly and helpful. I lost a cat that I had for 15 years and they waived the fee to put her down and even sent me a sympathy card. I recently had my dog diagnosed with diabetes and Dr. Granzow and the staff have went out of their way to assist me how to give her insulin shots and the best possible care. Our cats Yin and Yang had such great care from both Dr Grazlow and Dr Bushinger over the last 10 years. They originally saw Vetted vets, but Yin had some breathing issues that caused us to want some testing. Dr Grazlow thought it might be meningitis, but the ultrasound clearly showed she was in heart failure, and she referred her to an excellent kitty cardiologist for specialty care. She was gentle and kind with her while she was in crisis, and Yin loved her. While we no longer have Yin with us, we got almost a year, thanks to Dr Grazlow and her recommendations. We immediately switched from Vetted, and Yang started going to Alameda Pet Hospital as well, even though she hates the car; while she meows nonstop door to door, as soon as she sees Dr Bushinger, she quiets right down. I'm pretty sure she worships her. Dr. Bushinger diagnosed her diabetes, helped her get on just the right amount of insulin, and has done her diabetes wellness checks for 3 years now. Yang is thriving at 17 1/2 years old despite needing her shots, and while she hates going to the vet - I say we spend a lot so she can yell at nice people - she loves every second she spends with Dr Bushinger. I always adopt old rescue animals. Currently, I have a 17 yr old cat and also a poodle who's probably about the same age. Both had taken a turn for the worse this fall. The entire staff at Alameda pet have gone above and beyond to help them and support me. I really thought I was going to lose them but I'm super happy to say they both are doing really well now! The vets (I see all of them!) are super communicative and know their stuff. I have always found the front desk to be so helpful and also go above and beyond to help with meds and appts. During covid, everything has been more challenging but I think they're navigating it pretty well! I was really surprised to read a couple of the reviews here so I wanted to leave my own.
