I would prefer to give ZERO stars. It's never good to feel like you've been ripped off. It's also never good when you have that feeling that you can't trust the vet and staff to have your pet's best interest in mind. I walked out feeling both. Brought my dog in for a swollen ear couple weeks ago. They found so much more wrong with her that I'm skeptical that she actually even needed treatment. Within a couple days, after over $1,500 treatment (and hard sell tactics), the dog's ear reswelled. Doubt she actually had a foxtail in her ear (the one on the tube they showed me could have come from anywhere). Told to come in for a recheck (not a follow-up) for another $160. Same vet seemed ok with the swollen ear this time around. Was draining really needed? Going to this vet...it feels like they're trying to pad the bill...a lot. Lesson learned. Time to find a new vet practice. read more

Terrible customer service. I brought my puppy in for vaccinations and to have her ear checked. During the visit, the doctor provided a prescription so I could fill the medication elsewhere if needed. Later, for convenience, I called back to purchase the medication directly from them instead. To my surprise, I was told I would need to schedule another consultation for the doctor to reassess my puppy--even though I already had a valid prescription that could be filled for up to a year. This felt unnecessary and appeared to be an attempt to charge an additional $80 for a visit that wasn't needed. Because of this experience, I have canceled all future appointments and will not be returning. It is disappointing to deal with unprofessional staff who do not know how to properly treat their customers. Overall, this experience showed a lack of transparency and customer care, and I would not recommend this business. read more

Update: 30 minutes after I left the review, Steve from their office called me and said that they will send me my dog's record and cancelled my appointment. I said I need to bring him in because he needs his Librela shot. He rudely said, "why would you still want to come here if the service is bad?" Then, hung up on my face. They don't care about pets. These people are heartless and entitled. I don't think I have ever experience customer service worst than this. Terrible customer service. Lack of empathy for pets and human beings. My dog had his first vet appointment at the Providence on Webster last month. While I spent a lot of money, I was happy to know that my dog finally got some treatment for his arthritis. Due to my schedule, they scheduled me for his monthly Librela shot at the Pacific location. I got a call today (on the day of his appointment) saying that I need a record of his vaccinations before he can get his second dosage of Liberla shot. During the first visit, they never once mentioned that I need to submit his record of vaccinations, as I don't have them. They said that according to CA law, they can't give him his Librela shot without the rabies booster, which is understandable, but I wish they would have told me that even prior to sedating him, giving him X-rays and his first dosage of Librela. Since my dog desperately needs his Librela shot today, I asked if they could comped the $37 rabies shot. They said "no". I spent $1800 on the first vet visit and his monthly Librela shot is $180. I would have never done that if I would have known about their requirements and terrible customer service. The reception stood firm on their $37 rabies shot requirement, never apologized or even empathized with my frustration. It's ridiculous how fast they take our money, then make rules and refuse to compromise because they know that our pets need the car. Very disappointing. read more

I liked the appointment when I first came with my pup. Then I got the annual reminder to schedule an appointment. I filled out a form and then nothing. Then one random morning, they called to tell me I missed an appointment. I told them no one had sent me an email or confirms anything. So we scheduled a second appointment That day I was running behind so I called to cancel. I was on hold for 16 minutes so I hung up called back and as quickly as I could I told them I was just calling to cancel and would call back to reschedule. Today I was 12 minutes late, in the parking lot and was told the late policy is 10 minutes. It would be great to get that kind of information ahead of time. You know? Seems like systems-wise, they need a little bit of customer communication improvement. Anyway, plenty of vets out there. Nothing here was super special (the techs were all sweet. But I got that at a different emergency hospital as well). If you're nearby, go for it! If you have a lax schedule, go for it!! read more

I've been bringing my pets here for nearly two years. We really liked Dr. Lender when she was with the practice, but unfortunately, she's since left. During our most recent visit, we dropped off a stool sample and didn't hear back for several weeks. When I finally called to follow up, the receptionist told me the sample was never processed, without any apology or explanation. I was simply told that since we hadn't been charged, we could just bring in another sample. But honestly, how can I trust that it'll be handled properly this time? Providence is more than the best. I had to experience the saddest moment of my Fur Baby's life. It was time for Hapa to cross over the Rainbow bridge. Liz was my first point of contact and she was angel indeed. I got to the clinic and all was ready and waiting for my family to deal with Hapa's final moments. Dr. Schelble was a Godsend... these people were the most compassionate and caring people I've ever had to deal with in this situation. She was gentle and kind throughout the process. Hapa went peacefully and easily. They were patient, informative and they gave my family all the time needed to say our goodbyes to Hapa. This is never an easy thing losing a pet, but Providence treated us with respect and full understanding. Thank you so much from the bottom of our hearts. Wasn't sure about his place after the first few times there but today I took my little guy in for itchy ears and skin but they just weighed him, didn't take his temp, or check his eyes or mouth. I thought that was standard part of an examination but it's not at this clinic. Vet tech was excellent and the doctor seemed fine but as soon as I walked out of the exam room to the front desk, a cold and unfriendly receptionist shoved the card reader in front of me before I could say a word, ran the card, handed me my paper and went about her business, didn't say one word. I will say that I initially had nothing but great customer service from both the front and the back of the house here. I also was happy to pay whatever the charges were. That treatment changed in the last several months. One of my dogs went in for her yearly vaccinations at 6:10pm. By the time she got home (we live super close to the office) I noticed she was breathing hard and soon began throwing up and having uncontrollable diarrhea. I called the vet at 6:40pm to say she was clearly having a reaction and was told that I could bring her in, but I may end up being sent elsewhere since they were about to close and it would be an emergency visit, even though we were just there and the emergency was caused by treatment at their office. Get there within minutes and they are already trying to get us to sign a care estimate of over $400. I knew from experience in the vet med world that if it was a bad vaccine, the manufacturer is responsible for care costs. I was very understanding and kind in saying I understood they can't control a bad vaccine batch happening. Even after explaining this and the staff agreeing, I was told that it was customary for us to pay and just get reimbursed when the manufacturer paid. I felt strongly that our dog had been given a bad vaccine (which they checked to see that she had received the very same vaccine by the very same manufacturer for many years now, so yes, it had to be the vaccine that was bad and not a reaction on the dogs part), they agreed and then proceeded to act like they were giving us special treatment by letting us not pay for the manufactures blunder. Fine. Had I not known bad batches of vaccines can happen and manufacturers are expected to pay for subsequent care, they would have happily let us pay. I then take our other dog in weeks later for a reoccurring issue that they have yet to get resolved and they once again try to get me to pay for the "outstanding balance" from that bad vaccine with our other dog. They get that removed from that invoice and I proceed to pay for that days visit and steroids and antibiotics. A couple of days later, I get a call telling me the manufacture had paid the outstanding balance from the bad vaccine (as though that was going to be on me to pay if they didn't) and that while I was there for my other dog, they made a mistake in the total of the meds and I still owe over $100 and could I pay over the phone. So to make sure I was understanding things, they wanted to let me know I no longer owed them for a mistake made by someone other than me and oh, I just owed over $100 more dollars for an error on their part. I said that everything was starting to sound a bit "scammy" and most places would have just eaten the cost of their mistake after everything we had just gone through and I was told by the person on the phone that they weren't going to argue with me and they would tell the manager I felt that way and pretty much hung up on me. As someone that spent 15 years in animal care and have lots of friends that still work there, we all agreed that this place is not treating their customers well and looks shady in the process after these last few visits. I ignored the other bad reviews on here when I first started going there and now I see I shouldn't have. read more

Horrible experience. Staff was very unprofessional and did not take good care of my puppy. They just pet him rather than complete an actual exam. They only cared that I got my puppy from a breeder and commented on how expensive he is. I have allergies and needed a hypoallergenic dog. Our dog was treated by at Providence Veterinary Hospital-East, by a substitute veterinarian, Dr. Alex Herman. She was outstanding in every way! The practice was fully booked on the Saturday we visited, but Dr. Herman took the time to clearly explain our pet's problem and his future care plan. She acknowledged us for taking good care of our dog and for keeping his vaccinations up to date. With a great smile, she educated our spirited four year old grandson about allergies and mast cells! I Googled Dr. Herman and discovered she provides "high quality and compassionate care" in her regular job as a Veterinarian at the Oakland Zoo, CA, where she treats rescued mountain lions, tiny poison dart frogs, California condors, and giraffes, and others. In what world would a trial of antibiotics not be started when the alternative is delaying treatment multiple days? It's true, a broad spectrum antibiotic may not have helped but you know what doesn't help? No treatment. And bonus, it may have saved me time on additional appointments and money on costly tests. This was my first time coming to this location. Are usually go to the location on Webster Street but there was a mixup, but everything worked out just fine. It's always hard finding a good vet clinic to take your pets to because you want to feel comfortable and confident since you rely on them to make sure your pet is healthy and in good hands. This is the place to go and BOTH locations are great. PROS -Easy appointment booking online or calling. -Staff is so friendly, patient, understanding and helpful. -easy drop off appointment due to Covid safety. Just park in the spot, call the front desk and let them know what space number you are in. Easy. -good location -Clean office -They do NOT try to gouge you with unnecessary services or medications. I've had bad experiences with other vet clinics before with my other dog. -I feel comfortable and always have a peace of mind whenever I take my pet here. -I have had to book with different veterinarian doctors so I could get the soonest appointment, but they all were great and just all consistently good. :) My last two visits were with Dr. Thurman and she was outstanding. Fairly new to Alameda. My dog was acting low on energy, is very suseptible to Giardia and he needed a check up. The tech asked questions, took notes and then Dr. C came. I wanted my dog to get lab work done to see if there was a reason why he was so low on energy. Dr. C examined him. We agreed on the blood work. They also told me he needed a Lepto shot. So off he went with the tech. I like that the exam rooms are large and my dog could freely move around. Dr. C told me that it would be a couple of days before she would get the lab results. Two days letter I received Dr. C's email. The blood work showed there weren't any issues with him. But she had advised me during the visit that he was 5lbs over weight. I feel they did a good job and since I have two other animals, I will be taking them to Providence for regular visits or if they are any problems. read more

Our sweet dog has been a patient of Providence since 2019. Not only are they on top of her appointments and vaccines, their fees are fair and reasonable. The best part is their team! The tech Amy, the vet Dr. Lender, were very patient and gentle. The Kennel Tech Cassie was especially kind and has a very special gift with animals she has been a great support for our sweet dog who gets nervous when she's being seen. Initially I was pleased with the care, however the last few appointments have really brought to light how they put the monetary gain before the health of the patient (pet). The Vet dismissed the idea of food allergies and said it was most likely environmental and recommended giving my dog shots to eliminate the feeling of being itchy. I decided to pass. I don't want a bandaid, I want to treat the issue at the root. After I continued with the elimination diet, my pet's allergies improved. Secondly, when I found a better deal with a prescription they said that if I were buying prescriptions elsewhere, then they won't email the prescription to the other place because they won't do the leg work for me nor would they price match. Sure, it was a $15 difference, but at this point it's the principle. I've spent well over $1.5k in the last year and have been a frequent patient/customer in the last couple years. I understand that it's a business but, you are also in the business of health and wellness of animals. Leading with care and integrity by putting your patient's health and wellbeing first will help build customer loyalty and grow your bottom line. I will be taking our business elsewhere. read more

1 dog. 4 different doctors, 2 of them were fill-ins. Inconsistent diagnoses. Big on the Upsell, everything from a nail trim (go to mudpuppies, 1/3 their fee) up to removing my dog's eyes! Yes, that was the first visit. My dog was born blind, her eyes caused her no discomfort. She was there for Cushing's disease treatment. Asking for a written prescription to be filled by an online service was ridiculous and difficult. Over-prescribed antibiotics led to a serious opportunistic skin infection. They prescribed a fifth-round to treat it. I didn't use it. After more than 6K in testing and treatment, my dog didn't survive. The experience was gut-wrenching overall. read more

Lately, the service and customer experience at Providence has been declining. I've been a customer for 25+ years and I am disappointed to have to say that the service and the attention by the staff has suffered greatly. Often you walk in the front door and the staff at the reception desk never make eye contact and often you stand there with no other customers in the reception and they don't acknowledge that you are standing there. I realize that people can be busy with a task but it does not take a great deal of effort to say "Hello" or "Thank you for waiting we will be with you in just a moment." There seems to be no much needed training in soft skills, courtesy or even basic customer service skills. Calling in on the telephone is even worse. Quite often you are immediately placed on hold and usually for long periods of time so you just hang up and call back later. I have witnessed sitting in the reception area where one person answers the phone and places a caller on hold while one or two other people behind the counter type away on their keyboards and don't even acknowledge that customers are waiting on the phone. This is a great example of how there is no importance placed on the customers and absolutely no attention to good customer service. It makes you wonder if you should in fact feel good about brining your beloved pet here for care. They don't treat people with a great deal of courtesy or respect so it would make sense to question how they treat your pet when the pet is behind closed doors. I sent a letter to the owner to ask for a conversation about the level of service declining and I never received a word of acknowledgement. It is clear that the importance of customers, pets and customer service starts at the very top. At the top of the organization, it is evident that customers are not really valued or important. It is a shame really, to see the service and people skills decline so drastically and quickly. This is not the same business it was a years ago. Things change with time but you always hope that they change for the better. Not so the case here at Providence. I think it is important to acknowledge that the veterinary car provided by the doctors is quite good. The doctors are highly qualified and very much care for animals. I is just a shame that all of that care and attention is so seriously diminished by the office staff. On a good day I would describe them as jaded, course and unenthusiastic. As a customer, I have learned that you vote with your wallet. If you pay for bad service then you get what you deserve. If the office staff had an investment in soft skills and common courtesy, then this would be a great place to take you pet. Unfortunately, I am not optimistic that things will change after such a long period of declining service. read more

She is patient in answering my questions and I never feel rushed during my visits. My wife just got a call today 2/8/24 that Providence deactivated our account and canceled our pets appointment because we gave them constructive criticism in a yelp review. After over 20 years and three pets, they deactivated our account because we gave them one star review for a previous appointment. The original issue was they refused to confirm by telephone the prescription they wrote so we could have it filled at chewy.com. What could have taken 24 hours, left our pet suffering for over a week because we had to physically mail the prescription instead of having it confirmed by phone. They did not offer to correct the issue and they didn't reach out to us after the Yelp review to see how they could resolve the issue. In the past, during time of an appointment, my wife asked for a written Rx so we could take it to be filled. The wait has been up to an hour on at least 3 occasions. Today my wife was told they didn't want our business if we didn't think they gave 5 star service. My wife offered to take the review down if the issue was resolved. They wouldn't confirm that it's wasn't a policy or that the issue was resolved. She was told "it takes as long as it takes, and you should tell the vet at the beginning of the appointment you need a prescription." My wife's response was that makes sense if it is for Trifexis, our normal refill, but we won't always know what prescriptions are required until we've been seen by the Vet. It feels like being forced to wait, as much as an hour, is a strong arm tactic to get you to fill your prescription at their prices with them. We should be able to obtain a prescription for a pet at the time of an appointment within a reasonable time and have it filled where we want. We have found another veterinary clinic and have also made a substantial donation to them. So, it's not the money but the services. read more

I have been a loyal customer of Providence vet for almost 2 years, and have taken my puppy in for vaccinations, boarding, exams, even grooming, and spent well over a thousand dollars with them. I just called to shorten my dog Clay's boarding reservation during this Holiday season as I will not be able to travel during this Holiday season for numerous reasons.  The office lady tried to charge me $50 as a deposit fee, claiming this was their policy for the holidays, even though it was not communicated to me in any way. I was on hold to speak with the office manager about this, but was hungup on abruptly after a few seconds. Since this is a change and not a "Cancellation", there should not be any deposit hold charged to my account. The policy as sent to me does not specify anything related to Christmas Day (12/25/22) changes requiring a $50 deposit.  When I spoke to the receptionist on this, she asked to place me on hold, and then my call was disconnected. Upon calling me back a few seconds later, she said that she could cancel the reservation but I was banned from boarding Clay in the future. I asked for her name and the office managers name. The lady tried to interrupt me several times as I was explaining myself, refused to provide her own name (managers name is Susan), and refused to transfer me to the manager, and abruptly hungup on me *a second time*. This clinic has also been very shady in the past, for example: - Not clearly communicating their policy of charging a late fee for any appointments that are 5+ minutes late - Having a confusing system of online bookings that does not actually provide *availability* for booking pet boarding, merely its a request form, and having to play phone tag to confirm boarding dates - Trying to charge higher boarding rates *after pickup* without communicating their frequent rate increases in advance - Refusing to authorize online prescriptions (they will try to sell you their own overpriced pet medications) - Making you come in for each individual vaccination (and having to pay additional appointment fees each time) Regardless of what damage control Providence Vet tries to do in a response, every word of what I am saying above is true. Although initially I went to them bc they had reasonable boarding fees, recently they seem desperate to provide as rude customer service as possible, and nickel-and-dime you for everything. They have lost me as a client (and I will be sure to tell my pet parent friends about this as well). Go elsewhere! read more

Wow! My new pup is somewhat fearful, and everyone at Providence was just fantastic w her!! They gave her treats, a new toy she just loves, and she ended up feeling fairly comfortable. And Dr. Harris was absolutely wonderful, sitting on the floor at Bella's level and letting her inspect the stethoscope before using it on her. Also, her recommendation for a type of kibble that would stabilize her GI tract and improve her diarrhea was nothing short of miraculous! Within 12 hours Bella no longer had major problems and we were both able to get a full night's sleep! It was my first visit here, but I am incredibly pleased and Olán to start bringing my kitty here as well. read more

My poor cat has had some bad allergic reactions to his food of recent. He had a bad reaction for an entire night where he couldn't hold anything down. I called Providence the next morning and they were able to schedule an early appointment that day. I was nervous because my cat is so scared of going to the vet. We arrived and were taken to one of the hospital rooms within the first 15 minutes or so. The front desk were all very nice and helpful. The assistant met us in the room to discuss the reason I came. After writing everything down we were told the doctor would be in shortly to check my cat out. When Dr Wooley arrived she was very caring to my little sick furball. I spoke to her about my concerns and she recommended what she would do and how he would start eating prescription food to see if that would help his sensitive belly. She then had the assistants come in to give him fluids that he lost throughout the night as well as shots to help him feel better. I couldn't be happier with how good Providence did in handling my cat. He can put up some resistance at times, but for them he was a piece of cake. I was impressed by the caring attitude they showed to us, because after all, my little cat is my buddy. I know all pet owners feel the same, that when our furry family is treated well, it's equivalent to treating us well. My wife is very anxious about our cat so she called about three times to speak with the Doctor about his health. Each time, despite her busy schedule, she helped comfort and talk to my wife about all the concerns she had. At Providence, especially Dr Wooley as well as the assistants do a great job. read more
