I came here to find some good quality yarn and was excited to visit my first yarn shop after learning to crochet a few months ago. The shop is small but cute and had so many selections of yarn that I wanted to spend time looking at them all. However, I did not feel very welcomed in the store. They zeroed in on me once I walked in like I was an outsider, asking me what I was looking for, but not in a very friendly way. It felt like I was intruding and I didn't want to spend longer than I had to in there even though I wanted to look at all the yarn. It's clearly a community there but not a welcoming one. Not a great experience for someone visiting their first yarn shop. I am somewhat relieved to see other reviews saying the same thing, knowing it wasn't just me who had this kind of experience. This is the yarn shop closest to me but I am hesitant to come back here based on my experience. read more

Update is for the customer service, which a few other reviews have mentioned needs work. I sent an email about needing help with a dropped stitch, and was told I could come by for "drop-in" help on Wednesday night. When I rearranged my schedule to come in, I was told I would need to be part of a class, pay $8, and then participate in the class to get any help. With a toddler in tow, I said I couldn't stay for the full class. They made it clear I should leave (no offer to help me as I browsed the yarn, or offer to at least look at the single dropped stitch and tell me if it's fixable or not, or alternative time to come in, or an estimated wait time). When I replied to the email saying I wish I'd known the set up before driving over, I got an (unsurprisingly) defensive email. Based on other reviews and the clientele of the shop, this is a pretty traditional knitting store and community. If you are newer to the craft or fall outside the stereotypical demographic of a knitter, there are friendlier and more inclusive yarn shops in Los Angeles. I won't be returning to this one. The comments the owner left are untrue (see email regarding $8 and class format; I was also told she could "go get a chair from the back" if I signed in, paid the fee, and participated in the ongoing class). Came her for yarn crawl 2024 for the first time and I'm obsessed with this store! Their social media only has pictures of items people make, not the inside of the store. The inside of the stores is so cute, I love their layout. A nice variety of yarns by weight, color, texture and fiber. I bought a sweaters-worth quantity of hand died yarn from England they had and it is gorgeous. If I didn't live so far away, I would love for that to be my neighborhood store. read more

I am an amateur knitter and appreciate having a local yarn shop. I've been able to pick up basic supplies and they seem to have a nice selection of yarns. The staff (owners?) have been very helpful a couple of times when I've come in with a quick question about a project. This place is full of really cool high quality items, however the staff is absolutely ridiculous. They have the BIGGEST attitudes and have zero customer service skills whatsoever even towards my grandmother who is not only sweet as can be but was there to spend $300 on special order yarn. They have a lot of nice yarn. It's fun to walk through and feel the texture of the yarn in person. However, yarn here is grossly overpriced. I have been knitting for over 30 years and will gladly pay $20+ for a hands-on and dyed ball of yarn. My issue is when the yarn is $8-$10 a skein more in shop than online or at another store, that's where I draw the line. It's fun to look around, but I prefer to purchase yarn elsewhere. read more

Such a lovely gem of a shop! Well worth the drive from North Orange County. They have a nice selection of beautiful yarns and accessories (much more than you can see from their website) - and even carry my favorite Addi knitting needles! The Alamitos Bay Yarn Company is a lovely, out of the way, unique, yarn store. It has a homey feel to it. Directions via my navigator or maps app had me in the middle of the road. I called to get clearer directions and the lady who answered was friendly and humorous. The yarn is not your run of the mill yarn. If you want basic yarn, run over to Michael's or Joann's. If you want quality, unique, fancy, beautiful yarn, this is your place. There were SO many colors, sizes, textures, styles, of yarn. I felt like a kid in a candy store. Word to the wise, it is pricey. I ran into several skeins/hanks/balls that were $27 or more. They offer classes, which I'm definitely going to look into taking. I love this place. I've been coming here for a while and have to say, the staff is the warmest anywhere. All my crazy questions (no matter how basic) end up in a nice conversation about yarn, weaving and knitting. Beware though, the place is infectious. I never intended to learn the things I've learned, either through suggested techniques or through the wide variety of classes offered. I've met many people I now called friends. The store itself with the variety or yarn fibers and colors will keep you in the store searching for the perfect yarn to bring home. If you chance to come in when there are people at the table knitting and laughing, you'll think they've know each other for years, I've found that most of them are strangers enjoying an art that they can all share together. You know how see a cute Rainbow Brite shrinky dink magnet for $10 on Etsy, and you think to yourself, "Look, self. I know you appreciate the local arts and all, but you could totally make that same thing for like a buck." Well, if you think the same thing about that $200 cashmere sweater you saw at Nordstrom, you've got another thing coming; knitting is damn expensive. When you're first starting get your yarn fix at Michael's or WalMart or something, but when you're willing to drop a few more dollars, Alamitos Bay Yarn Co is for you. It's a really cute, cozy shop with very nice service. The selection, like I said, is pretty schmancy. Came across this store thru yelp! Been wanting to knit and just looking for the right place to teach me! I stopped by at the store one fine more morning and met two elderly - lovely ladies! They greeted me with simple 'Hello' I immediately seek and inquire about their knitting classes in particular and they were more than accommodating and explained me what are my options are! It's great because They have Saturday morning class, 9:00am til 11:30am the price for my particular class was about $96.00. It was $65:00 for the class itself which was 3Saturdays and the materials were the difference. It was worth the pay! I have Sandra as my instructor- she is smart, comforting, funny and very knowledgeable about her craft! She is awesome! She teaches in a way that is comprehendible and have a non-judgmental voice. She uses constructive criticism and she makes sure she over sees you while attending with other students at the same time. Sandra is even willing to assist her students on Fridays when she is at the store. And she never fails to remind her student this every Saturday when the class ends This class however just teach u hands on, so if you are looking to learn technical terms then, you will either have to hit the books or other sources. The environment is clean and quiet! The ambiance is relax and refreshing. The natural lighting is amaaazing! There is nothing I do not like about this place!!!! People/customers seems to be coming here for a long time now too! Customers know them and they know their customers! What a wonder place with the most helpful staff. I visited here three times during the first week I found them. They invited me to their open knitting evening even though I brought my loom. I am a pretty new weaver and they gave me tips that really helped. They even went out of their way to get a cardboard paper towel tube to get me started. Who knew that would help even out the tension if you put it over the knots in the starting end of your warp?! It isn't in the instruction in the loom box and not in any video I've watched. But that little tip has sure improved my tension. Thank you Los Alamitos Yarn! I'll be back! FYI weavers... this is the only place in a 50 mile circle that regularly carries pickup sticks and other extras like variable dent reeds for Cricket looms . I know... I ordered rather expensive yarn to be shipped to my home. It was shipped via FedEx, but I never received it. I cannot get a proof of delivery because it was shipped without insurance or a signature requirement. I never even received in invoice after requesting one. Alamitos Bay could file a claim with the shipper they used, but Sandra basically told me they will do nothing. It says it was shipped, so that's good enough for her. I've had to deal with their shipping service myself since Sandra has refused to help out. Very unprofessional. So I'm out out $150. So if you order anything from Alamitos Bay to be shipped to you. You must tell them how to do it correctly so you won't be burned like I was. At the very least demand an invoice, and a tracking number. Ask for insurance on the package, require a signature. read more

Love this place! I went in with my mom on our weekly lunch date and they had so many amazing and beautiful yarns and fiber based materials . I was looking around and saw this yarn and said to myself.. " self.. this would make such a cool scarf!" I asked the ladies how hard it would be to make a scarf and since I have never knitted anything, they said it's not that hard and your mom can teach you. My mom said she tried in the past and that I sucked as a student.. so I was motivated and thought it can't be too hard... and I can watch a few You Tubes and learn how to KNIT!!! I made this cool scarf ( see my picture) and had to take it apart a few times and went back in for advice and the whole staff rallied to show me how to fix my novice ways. They even lent me these special knitting needles to make sure it came out the way I envisioned it in my "never knitted a thing in my life" head. This store is all about taking care of it's customers and they take pride in offering really unique and quality materials for knitting and all the things that you will need to make a cool and high quality knitted object of art! The best part of making something as a first timer is learning a new skill and knowing that if you have a problem that the entire staff at the Yarn Company are there in yoru corner to make sure you are happy with the end results! It's like a candy store, but with yarn. The colors are overwhelming and the yarn quality is absolutely fantastic. You are definitely getting your monies worth. Do not go here with an empty pocket book... I would suggest beginners to start with your first yarn purchase here because your fingers will thank you. Cheap yarn from Michaels or Joann's have only left me a bit crippled and frustratred, but my determination has lead me to the treasure cove of yarns which is harbored at Alamitos Bay Yarn Co. Personal experience... I began with Red Heart yearn (acylic), and it only left me frustrated because of alll the "fuzziness" that resulted from crocheting Amigurumi dolls. I then discovered that cotton was less "fuzzy" prone, but there was a price to pay for non-fuzzy. My fingers began to feel extremely painful from the friction of creating tension on the cotton yarn. After a few hours of crocheting, you will understand my experience if you go with cotton yarn (Sugar and Cream). When I discovered Alamitos Bay Yarn Company and purchased THEIR cotton yarn ... it was like silk on a baby's bottom. My fingers literally recouperated from the agony of cheap yarn and the work produced was absolutely stunning. Seriously, if you buy cheap yarn, you can expect cheap looking work. The cotton yarn from ABY Co. ran me about $7.00, but it allowed me to enjoy crocheting again. I would rather fork out a few more bucks in order to keep my hobby going. And it makes me crochet more carefully because I do not want to waste this precious yarn. The ladies are very kind; they know their stuff and they dont mess around. Go in with an open mind and know what you are interested in. Ask for help because these are busy ladies and might not know if you need help, but when you do ask, you will not regret it. I was half expecting them to ignore me because I'm a 20 something wearing a shirt that said "omg" ... I didn't really fit in with these sweet ladies, but I just acted confident (I really thought they could smell insecurity and fear) and did my yarn searching until I was sure about what I wanted. Definitely hit an miss. For me, mostly a miss, depending on who is working there. My first experience with ABYC was HORRID. They were flat out rude, and not really interested in helping me when I asked a question. I'm mainly a crocheter, not a knitter, and in the elite world of knitting, I am inferior. I know how to knit, I just don't prefer it. The second time I went in I went in for a specific yarn for a project (noro) and they didn't have the colorway I needed but were generally helpful and congenial This last time I went in pretty much cemented my resolve not to go back. Great shop! Lots of choices of *nice* yarns! I like nice quality hand-dyed yarns, and they've got plenty to choose from! There's a nice selection of Malabrigo and MadeleineTosh. Lots of colors of baby yarn and blanket yarn. And plenty of yummy squishy fibers in gorgeous colors. They also have a great needle and notions selection. I love that they have plenty of samples made so you can see how the yarn will look and feel in a project. And the samples have labels so you can know the pattern and yarn that were used. Wow! What a great selection and what wonderful, helpful, knowledgeable staff! My mom and I came in looking for yarn to make a bridal shrug for me and my bridesmaids. We brought one of the dresses along with details from my dress, and basically had no idea where to start. We had help from three lovely ladies who helped us select yarn, determine the make and whether we would have any itch-factor (wool and lanolin oil, etc.), warmth, size of holes, knit versus crochet, different levels of dressiness, color coordination, the works! They sell Artyarn brand, many silk-cotton blends, mohair, tons! They also have knitting and crocheting classes. If anything doesn't work, they do store credit, but we found their prices to be very reasonable and their selection vast. I got the bridal experience! read more

I enjoy shopping at Los Alamitos Bay Yarn Co. The yarn selection at LABY is nothing like Joanne's or Michael's. This is a specialty store that sells high quality, rare yarns. This store is similar to Wild Fiber in Santa Monica, where you find internationally made wild fiber with vivid colors. The skeins of yarn available offer everything for the craft-cool-ravelry-etsy-hipster to the conservative-but-wise-knitter/crocheter with a project for a loved one or for her/his self. The shelves are filled with stunning skeins of yarn. Everything is brilliantly coordinated and colorful. Every time I shop here, my senses take over. I love touching and seeing all the beautiful, colorful, soft yarn. I become like my favorite French film heroine, Amelie. Like her, I enjoy sliding my hand in the vats of rice. I enjoy feeling the texture and coldness of the rice. At LABY, I enjoy touching all the soft and interesting skeins. I brought my husband with me the last time I came shopping to LABY. I found him reacting the same way. My hubby finds this store very soothing, colorful and cozy. He enjoys touching all the lovely soft yarn.
