LA Finch specializes in all things sewing, selling all the necessities, quirky accessories, and a huge variety of fabrics for any project. I grabbed a new pair of sewing scissors, a rolling blade, and a grid cutting mat. Sewing Lab offers weekly classes for beginners and specialty classes for those looking to further their craft. The next thing I knew I was forced into the car and found myself driving her to Los Alamitos. The store is actually a combination of two businesses; the LA Finch Fabrics store and also a sewing school called Sewing Lab, which has a separate Yelp listing (at https://www.yelp.com/biz/sewing-lab-los-alamitos-los-alamitos-2?osq=Sewing+Lab+Los+Alamitos). This quick review is just for the fabric portion of the store. They are a small shop, not nearly as large as JoAnne Fabrics was, but they have a surprisingly large selection of fabrics to choose from, as well as a vast array of remnants. My wife found several fabrics that she loved and purchased multiple yards of. The women who work here were extremely helpful and congenial, providing exceptional customer service. They also sell sewing machines and a plethora of sewing accessories. I think the non-fabric items are sold by the Sewing Lab side of the business but honestly I was a bit confused about the division, but it really doesn't matter as it's all available for purchase.

Getting the perfect blend of warm colors, tight-knit fibers, and pure linen was proving extremely difficult, but I finally found a closeout bolt that was perfect. Unfortunately, there wasn't enough of it available for my project, and I walked away from another store with only a sample of what I wanted. Elegant Fabrics had several close matches, and after explaining what I wanted to the owner and showing a sample, they were able to procure a near-perfect match that was both higher-quality and cheaper than my original choice. I got a level of personal service that I did not experience elsewhere; while most stores were trying to "sell me" on something I didn't want, this one made sure I got exactly what I asked for. Best of all, they do fabrication too! Instead of bringing my fabric to another shop, I was able to get high-quality curtains made right here. Shopping here was a great experience, and after reading the couple of negative reviews on Yelp I am pretty sure there are some embellishments, omissions, and outright lies on the parts of the reviewers. The owners were an absolute pleasure to work with. They didn't even ask for a review, but after getting on here and seeing that they didn't have very many I felt compelled to leave one. The curtains I got look awesome (despite my terrible photography). I will be recommending this place to friends and family in the future.

This fabric store has made the biggest mess of an upholstery job. I bought fabric from them and…read moreTHEY BEGGED me to let them do my UPHOLSTERY work. I reluctantly let them do my upholstery as I have worked with the same person for years. This began the nightmare. First it was due on June 20th and they gave them the two weeks they requested. My sofa was an already gorgeous Mcreery Sectional from HD BUTTERCUP and I was only reupholstering because my elderly dog had urinated on the down and I need to replace the down. While I was reupholstering I decided to better the couch by adding additional Down and to add piping to the seat cushions and widen the arms of the sofa from 4 inch to 8 inch. June 20th came and went and no sofa. No response from anyone. I called over and over. Finally when someone answered they started with the excuses. First it was someone's mother was in the hospital. Then it was someone's brother was in the hospital. Then it was the car got impounded. Then the delivery truck had issues. Finally after another 5 days the sectional arrived. Frustrated already I was just happy the sofa was being delivered. The delivery showed up in an old 80s small beat up truck and my huge sectional was stacked, tied and forced into a tiny truck looking like something being delivered to the trash dump. They didn't have any movers or helpers so my boyfriend and I had to unload the sofa. When we got the sectional inside and unwrapped it. EVERYTHING AND I MEAN EVERYTHING WAS WRONG. HERE BEGINS THE NIGHTMARE. 1. The upholsterer they used admitted to me that the fabric didn't arrive to him for 1 week. Then he also admitted that he didn't start on the project until the 20th when I started calling and the fabric store called him to tell him the job was due. 2. Since he didn't start on it and then on that day his wife went into the hospital that he "JUST HAD SOMEONE ELSE DO THE WORK" and he didn't even share the details of what we had discussed. 3. Since he didn't discuss with the people doing the upholstery they just made the same sofa details as before which was 4 inches different than the new down cushions that they had ordered for the sofa and the piping that was supposed to go onto the couch and cushions. They also didn't get the detail to add 4 inches to the arms. 4. When the sofa arrived they had forced the 8 inch down cushions and pillows into the old 4 inch casings making all the cushions bend and warp and looked like marshmallows. They didn't even touch they were so warped. Of course this was unacceptable and I discussed with the upholsterer. He left without taking the sofa back. 5. The next day Meenu and her husband demanded payment in full and said the "SOFA WAS BEAUTIFUL". I explained to them all of the issues and that it was unacceptable. They told me I was just picky. The upholsterer came back out to the property and we went to Restoration Hardware and we looked at other down sofas and what was wrong. He agreed that the job had been done incorrectly and he vowed to fix it. The next day MEENU AND HER HUSBAND call me from the store and in the back ground her husband said "FUCK HIM" and they yelled at me and told me to pay it in full which i refused. One week later they show up to my house and take one seat and one back cushion to remake the covers. Those got returned 10 days later. Then they picked up one more seat and 2 back cushions that have now been 2 more weeks total of 6 weeks now and keep in mind my chaise, base and piping has not been redone. So i have one chaise in a 4 inch case. A base that has 6.5 inch arms and doesn't match up left and right side. They have completely lost 4 down pillows that were originally with the couch and now two seats with piping and 3 cushions that they have in their possession. Meenu now has started threatening me and when I say threatening me I mean that she says she hopes I die. She says she hopes i end up in the hospital. She has told me "TO SUCK HER DICK" and says she is going to show up to my house with a knife and cut all the fabric off my couch.

I also made an appointment to visit the showroom the morning of and it was apparent that they don't have many visitors since the showroom was used more so of a stocking room. Brandy was so helpful and patient with me for all the questions that I had. She allowed to try on multiple band widths and ring sizes. By the end of the appointment I knew what I wanted but unfortunately they couldn't provide the ring in the features and style I wanted. I bought an entry level…read moresewing/embroidery machine a month ago and attended several classes to learn to use it and I was instantly creating projects! This is surprising since I'd never used a sewing machine before. At a class this week, I met another lady who got a REALLY great deal on a refurbished high end sewing/embroidery machine and after sleeping on it, decided to go back the next day to see if they could find another deal like that for me. Well, George happened to be there and he and Karen found me a near-new machine with less than 10k stitches on it!!! Needless to say, I came home with a MAJOR upgrade at a GREAT price. These folks really know their machines and supplies, and make themselves available to help their clients and answer every question one could have...and as a super-newbie, I have an overwhelming amount. :) I look forward to spending many more happy hours there learning to use my new power tool with thread and mastering my new hobby. When I was looking for a yarn store that offered more varieties versus the 90% acrylic offerings at…read moreMichaels and Jo-Anns, I looked this place up on Yelp and decided to stop by. It was tricky to find - it's located in a small business strip mall area off S State College Blvd and is located on the right side of the strip mall, second to last door. The shop is small and stocked from ceiling to floor with each shelf labeled with the material content of each yarn. The man who helped me was kind enough to take me to the areas where I could find cotton yarns for a project I was working on. While they mostly carry acrylics and synthetic fibers for handknits and knitting machines, they did have a small collection of unmercerized cotton yarns. I bought 2 cones of yarn for a little over $20. The woman who rung up my purchase gave me some helpful tips for knitting with this yarn (Knit a test swatch, handwash the final garment to prevent shrinking, etc.) before telling me about their seasonal yarn sale they host out in the parking lot. Months later, I returned for the sale and they have everything! Acrylics, cottons, designer quality yarns from overseas, blends - it was amazing to see their assortment. I had a bag full of yarns that came out to $25-30 that would have retailed for more full price. I would come back again to either check out the yarn sale or to take a machine knitting class.
