I've been here a few times and I have never had a bad meal. Its a little nontraditional in the sense that there is only outdoor seating, and in the midst of summer, this place can get PACKED and you may be forced to have an impromptu picnic at Jefferson Park. When I come, I always get the Texas Train-wreck and just end up switching my protein each time I get it. The Texas Train-wreck comes in either a burrito or a just in a platter, I prefer the latter. The Train Wreck comes with "Your Choice of Meat over Mac & Cheese, Cowboy Beans, and Cornbread. Topped with Diced Onions and Jalapenos." I love the messiness of it all and how the cornbread just sops up all the juices of everything. It's heavenly. Also the amount of food you receive is astronomical. It's so much food. You can either leave in an actual food coma and need an immediate nap, or you can have 2/3 more meals. I definitely recommend coming to this place for some awesome bbq! read more

I don't eat barbeque. So why in the world would I dine at Alamo? Two words: Fish Tacos. You've probably heard the hype, and I'm happy to report that this pescatarian-friendly Alamo option lives up to it. The tacos are light and fresh, with a bite that awakens the tastebuds and leaves me wanting more. Served on flour tortillas, the blackened tilapia is topped with cheese and a roasted corn and black bean relish. No creamy sauces or unidentifiable ingredients; just well-cooked fish with perfectly seasoned accompaniments. Only outdoor seating is available, so I took my tacos home to enjoy since the weather was a bit nippy during my visit. This also afforded me the luxury of squeezing a taste of lime on my tacos. So I like citrus... sue me. Two tacos is more than enough for this girl, as they aren't the dainty size you sometimes find at dining destinations. Alamo BBQ is THE BEST place to go for all your BBQ and/or hunger needs. It would be silly to try to mention everything that was great since EVERYTHING was great, so I'll try to keep it brief. The trainwreck meal is delicious, as are all of the pick-two/pick-three meats combination meals. Prices are good and parking is easy (plenty of street parking any time of day), and the location isn't seedy or anything worth worrying about. You can smell the deliciousness the griller is hard at work on before you even come up to order, and the Proustian experiences it will give you days/weeks/months later are nothing short of impressive. Come early or be left high and dry). What do you do?! Texas Trainwreck, of course! At the price of $6.95, you get your choice of a meat served in a sort of casserole with beans, jalepeno mac and cheese, and cornbread. SO, SO DELICIOUS. I don't know what took me so long to try this place out...when I mentioned it to a coworker last week, she told me it had closed and I about had a fit! I did some of my investigate (i.e. calling the restaurant) and low and behold they were alive and well!!!! We checked out this Church Hill corner on a chilly Saturday morning and read the menu on our phones so we knew what we wanted before we got there. Want to know what to order??? The Platter, choice of two meats which comes with cole slaw, corn bread, or a bun, and two sides. I opted for the upcharge and got the ribs and pulled pork barbecue, collard greens and jalapeno mac n cheese. AMAZING. That's all I can say...so freaking delicious!!! The bf ordered the same platter but with beef brisket and pork bbq, and I don't remember his sides but that isn't the point because the real stars at this place are the ribs, the brisket, and that AMAZING mac n cheese. Craving Brisket I opted for the BBQ (2) meat player which came with (3) sides @$11.95. I chose the Smoked Brisket and Smoked Link Sausage, collards, Jalapeño Mac & Cheese and Texas Caviar. Quite a portion, well worth the price. Beef Brisket had flavorful bark, smokey and was wonderfully "Wet", was worth the price of admission alone! Smoked Link was very tasty but in a supporting role. Today was my first visit to Alamo and even in spite of the outdoor-only seating and the 107 degree heat index, I was totally blown away by this place! I tried the BBQ platter which for $9 included two meats and THREE sides. I was able to try the pulled chicken and pork, both of which were flawless. If you've had your fill of VA style BBQ, Alamo's texas style is a great change of pace. The "Boom Sauce" had high expectations built right into the name, but it was surprisingly mellow, adding a not-too-sweet, not-too-hot, not-too-tangy kick without drowning out the smoky goodness of the BBQ. The main attraction here is the BBQ, but the plentiful sides don't dissappoint; The cornbread practically melted in my hands, the sweet potatoes had a bit of honey to them making them nearly a dessert item (in a good way), and the rice and beans were... well... rice and beans. Hard to mess up. Though it might bother some, I actually appreciated the complete lack of greasy, fried sides on the menu! Even without serving beer (which the food practically begs for) or having air-conditioning, I couldn't help but give Alamo a 5. The food is perfect, the service is fast, the price is right, and tucked away in Church Hill, the place has a little bit of a hidden gem quality to it. Needless to say, it had been over a year since then, and I was glad to actually try the place in person. The shack is small but it serves up some fantastic food! It was late when I went, past 8PM, but it was warm that night. I ended up ordering food to-go and eating it back in my apartment, since I was still a little ill that day. It worked out anyway, since I had ordered a lime-ade but they had run out of ice, so I used my own ice at home. There are some tables and chairs set out in case you want to eat there though. I ordered the BBQ platter, which was a great way to try two different meats and three sides all at once. The food was super yummy! I ordered the ribs & portabello with potato salad, cole slaw, and collard greens. The guy who took my order at the window was super friendly and laid back too! Cute place with outdoor seating, nice staff. The menu has a good variety of barbecue foods. Prices are reasonable. I ordered Brisket and jalapeño macaroni and cheese. I was largely underwhelmed by the food. The beef was tender but not juicy and otherwise didn't have much additional flavor To make it stand out. The barbecue sauce is very heavy and black pepper taste but not other dimensions of tangy or sweet. The mac & cheese was zesty with heavy black pepper but missed the heat that jalapeños can add (although I did see jalapeño pieces in there, but when eaten individually were duds). The consistency was the same as any other mac & cheese: Pasty, pale color, taste more like a flour mixture then a nice gooey cheese. I would go back to try the pork or chicken with corn bread, but I would not recommend the macaroni and cheese. After reading the many Yelp reviews about this place, I decided to give it a shot. I ordered delivery and without further delay, where is my review. The Good: No Delivery Minimum- most places that offer delivery require customers to spend a certain amount of money to order. Other places may add on a delivery fee and expect a tip. Alamo BBQ does not have a delivery minimum. I ordered my entree which was under $10 with no problem. Delivery Speed- After placing my order, the food arrived 15-20 minutes later. Considering that I ordered it during a time when the rush hour traffic was out in full force, this was incredible timing by the delivery guy. Portion Size- As you can see in the picture that I posted, you get a nice helping of food if you order the BBQ Platter. You will not feel hungry after finishing the meal. The Bad: Beef Brisket and Pulled Chicken- Both meats were slightly lukewarm and somewhat dry. From the other reviews posted, the pulled pork and fish tacos were the favored meat items at Alamo BBQ. Jalapeno Mac & Cheese- I'm on the fence about this because while I thought it was tasty, I have tasted better Jalapeno Mac & Cheese from Famous Daves. I got the Half Rib St. Louis Style Ribs with Cowboy Beans and Slaw. The ribs were... not the best I've had; it was dry/tough on most of the ribs and juicy/tender on small parts of the ribs....With a dry rub, I was expecting more of flavor explosion, and I didn't get that. Without their BBQ sauce they provided, unfortunately the ribs wouldn't have been very tasty... Their spicy BBQ sauce was also on point, definitely had a good kick to it. Slaw was good... but not sure if I'm used to a non runny slaw that was just a tad bit salty and not enough sweet to it. The cowboy beans were definitely crazy good, sweet, warm, soft and just delicious! A little disappointed the ribs weren't as good as I thought they were gonna be... I am not a fan of barbecue. I'll eat it from time to time, but where I grew up, barbecue was simply meat cooked on the grill. A barbecue was a cookout. The only time I've REALLY enjoyed barbecue was in Texas. They know what they're doing. Especially brisket. So I went to Alamo for some brisket, and it was terrible. Fat, fat, fat in every single bite. If there were less fat, it'd actually taste okay. However, after reading several other reviews, it seems this was not an isolated incident, and that the quality of the brisket at Alamo is just plain fatty. I do not see myself eating there again. I don't live in Richmond, but I've spent the last 15 years eating my way through BBQ restaurants across America. With several hundred and counting, a friend mentioned this place made it on a Southern Living's Best list so we decided to try while in town. Historically, half of the places that make those lists are there due to hype and don't belong. In fact, the magazine usually hasn't even eaten there. There's no arguing they can smoke meat here, but several factors contribute to a lesser rating. Let's start with the positives. The brisket is likely one of their stronger items (they were out of ribs when we visited so I can't comment on them). Also, unlike many BBQ joints they don't serve turkey. The brisket, meanwhile, succeeds at maintaining a smokey flavor while staying tender and although there's far more fat than I'd prefer there's little to complain about. The pulled pork is similar and actually the thickest pulled pork I've seen in a decade. The sausage is ok, too. Their sides also bring reason to visit. Rather than your typical bland slaw, beans and potato salad, they improve your experience by offering an array of more desired items. The yams (sweet potatoes) are full of sweetness, the cornbread has a bit of sweetness to it even without the honey butter (which we couldn't try because the flies wouldn't stop landing in it), the baked beans had chunks of brisket in it and the greens tasted fresh as did the Texas caviar, a nice twist on black beans and corn. As you can tell the food brings positive vibes. All the above can also be pressed into a sandwich, taco or burrito and there's a pile of items on the vegetarian menu, which is a treat at a BBQ spot. The desserts were impressive. We ordered the coconut cake, which was moist and gave off a lasting coconut flavor. Meanwhile, the bourbon pecan pie was too much for me. It had so much bourbon flavor that it overtook the pie. I took one bite and couldn't eat anymore. On the other hand, if liquor is your thing you'll probably devour it. Unfortunately, we didn't enjoy our experience and wouldn't return. My friend that grew up (and lives) in Richmond that joined me has been here a few times and concurred. Why? The 20 minute wait when there was only a few people in front of us, we could overlook. Meanwhile, it was the worst fly experience we've ever had. We sat in front of a huge outdoor fan (yes it was on) and we're being swarmed by flies. We couldn't get a single bite in without fighting flies. No exaggeration, it was worse that flies on poop in a park and ruined the meal. Keep in mind, this is Richmond and from May to September it's blazing hot (and there's only outside (covered) seating, which is enough to contend with. The flies were brutal. After a few minutes we left without eating our meals. It was unbearable. A few other things to consider: * There's one person taking orders and the line moves extremely slow, but the cashiers are more than friendly. * They only have sporks - yes, like the Bojangles ones. There's no forks. And, they are all plastic which can make it tough to cut the meat (especially if you're on one of the flimsy tables). *They have limeade, rather than lemonade. *Sweet tea is the only drink the comes in cups. The rests are cans, only. *Prices are more than respectable and affordable. *Seating is outdoors, only. Keep in mind, this rating and comparison relates to hundreds of US bbq restaurants, local and chains, not only Richmond area spots. For the record, we have eaten at Buzz n Ned's a few times, Mission BBQ three times, Deep Run Roadhouse, Q BBQ and Saucy's in Petersburg. read more

This is the best place for barbecue in RVA. If you're a vegan or vegetarian, I definitely recommend trying the BBQ Portobello Sandwich with Southwest Slaw ($6.50). I would have taken a photo of it but I devoured it before my "Yelpstincs" started tingling! The barbecued mushrooms were a perfect meat substitute, and they tasted delicious! Quick Advice - Stick to the pulled pork and eat it in your car where the bugs can't get at you and you'll be all set. Longer Advice - Alamo BBQ of Richmond is not consistently terrific barbecue. Some things are done well, some things are done poorly, and I think they need to figure out their business model a bit better. The pulled pork was smokey and delicious, but the brisket was woefully underdone and the fat was stringy. The mac'n'cheese was fair (with nice, firm noodles), but the cole slaw was flavorless. And both the portions and the prices are too small. I'd rather pay $2 more and get more food. I had to supplement my order with a whitefish taco, which thankfully was a highlight of the meal. On a corner in a quiet area of Richmond is a cute, little architectural anomaly reminiscent of the Alamo in San Antonio. Park on the street and take a quick walk over to this food stand with a few tables outside. Enjoy a small side of the jalapeno mac and cheese for about $2.50 plus a taco--order the smoky barbacoa, with a little limeade perhaps? The mac and cheese isn't amazing (needs more cheese), but is quite nice with the jalapeno surprise. And, the taco is very interesting and somewhat addictive. Taste the smoky meat mixed with some fresh and slightly sweet slaw on top and you have a messy but well balanced concoction of something related to VA barbeque but with a special kick. The meat was also very tender. --Ribs-- I thought that their ribs were quite average and were a little dried out. The flavor was their but the texture wasn't. The meat wasn't really that tender and lacked the fall off the bone consistency. Alamo is literally behind where I live *gasp*! It smells so good, literally the whole air and the houses around the place smells of this delicious hickory-BBQ smell. Between the three of us, we got two of these but I think the BBQ Platter is meant for one person each because the portion isn't too big. I wanted the brisket sandwich because I love onion and pickle but they were out of brisket so I substituted pulled pork. My boyfriend ordered the Alamo Cuban, a side of jalepeño Mac n cheese, and a side of cornbread. Let me start by saying the cornbread really blew my socks off! Best cornbread anywhere. My sandwich was a little plain but I added BBQ and some Sriracha for heat and it was perfect! The pork was exceptional! After a long two and a half hour drive to Richmond via a business trip, my alpha Kappa Delta Phi sisters and I decided to eat at Alamo, because it is my first time! And after having not eaten for approximately five hours, this place definitely hit the spot! I loved the two menus: one for BBQ and one for "Mexican" food. I decided to have the BBQ plate (more food for a cheaper price), just so I could have more food for leftovers tomorrow. When it comes to BBQ in Richmond, Alamo is the place to be. After trying Buz and Ned's a few weeks ago and leaving dissapointed with the sides and prices, Alamo was just about everything I wanted it to be. The beef brisket and smoked sausage I had were very tender and juicy. Especially the brisket, which was just about melt in your mouth good. Loved the snap on the sausage and the heavy smoke flavor. I wasn't blown away by the sides, but they were all good. The Texas caviar was unique and fresh, the collards were hot (although lacking a bit of flavor), and the cowboy beans had a great ground spice flavor. The house BBQ sauce complemented everything really well, and I should mention that none of the actual BBQ needed any extra sauce. Always a good sign. Alamo is great. If you're in-between choosing Buz and Ned's or Alamo, come to Alamo. You get more food for a lower price here, the staff is friendlier, the outdoor seating is wonderful on nice days, and the BBQ is superior. read more

I finally got a chance to try out this place for lunch the other day. I decided on the bag lunch deal where you get a sandwich (chicken, pork, beef) a side and a drink for $9. I ordered the pulled pork sandwich, southern caviar (corn, black beans, little dressing) and a sweet tea. The girl at the counter was super helpful with helping me pick things. I like the seating area and how they have a large covering so you're not directly in the sun. I noticed several people who ordered after me got called before me so I went up to check and the guy knew what I had ordered so I'm not sure what happened there but I had my food in about 2 mins. I'll prob update my reviews as I try more things here. I think it was good but not amazeballs... at least not yet. read more

***UPDATE*** Took my wife to Alamo for the first time Sunday so she can finally try what I've been raving about for months. She had the pork and coleslaw sandwich and I had the beef brisket with jalapeños and onions. We got 3 sides to share, cowboy beans, collards and potato salad. You couldn't have asked for a more beautiful day to eat in on the patio! We were stuffed, satisfied and EXTREMELY happy! I finally asked my dear Suzka what her thoughts were. A friend told me about this place and I'm so glad she did. I'm not a BBQ person so I order a little bit of everything and love everything I got. So aside from the spork I was given with my delivery order, the food is not bad. I had the BBQ platter w/ chicken & sausage. Sausage has a great smoky flavor with just the right amount of after-burn. The chicken is actually pulled chicken, not parts. It is good plain as well as with the spicy BBQ sauce. The cowboy beans are not exactly what I was expecting... they are sweet with an after-burn, was expecting tangy. For me, they could perhaps use some more seasoning. I felt I had to salt them but it could just be my pallet; that expected a different taste. The collard greens are like none I've ever had. Again, same after-burn spice (which I think they're just dripping jalapeno juice in everything) with perhaps no other seasonings than vinegar. Like the beans, not really my cup-o-tea, but I'm partial to greens cooked with ham hocks. They are however freshly made judging by the consistency... no squishyness here! The jalapeno mac & cheese was okay... which was kind of disappointing. In terms of innovative, I'm not sure I'd say that... pretty much what I speculate to be a boxed Mac & Cheese doctored up with some small chunks of various peppers & perhaps (once again) jalapeno juice from the jar. Saw the high number of reviews on Yelp so I had to stop by! Ordered the 2-meat platter with ribs and pulled chicken, plus 3 sides of potato salad, Texas caviar, and candied yams. Thought the ribs were good but a little dry. I prefer something with a bit more of a tender bite and chew but could be a personal preference! Was pleasantly surprised by the pulled chicken, so tender and juicy, yum! If paired with the cold salad of corn and beans, or Texas Caviar as I just learned haha, I could definitely see a great taco pairing for those two. Now onto the sides: Potato salad had more mustard than I'd liked especially since the BBQ was already tart and the pairing just made each bite clash, rather than complement. I liked the Texas caviar the most since it over a refreshing crunch that juxtaposed nicely to the smoky meats. This place was pretty okay. A friend and I were visiting Richmond and it was about a 30 second walk from our Air BnB. The girl that took our order was really nice and helpful with suggestions from the menu. We both got the big bbq platter which was 3 meats and 3 sides and cost about 16 bucks. Collectively we tried the beef brisket (which is $1 extra), pulled pork, pulled chicken and blackened tilapia. The brisket was good- tender, and a decent flavor. The pulled pork was pretty standard, but the pulled chicken was awesome. Had a nice actual chicken flavor and wasn't dry at all! The barbecue sauce they gave us to go was aright.... it sort of just tasted like someone accidentally knocked the pepper shaker over into the batch and just said oh well. The Mac and cheese has jalapeños in it which I was excited for, but it's not baked and I sort of expect baked Mac at a bbq spot. The candies yams were alright just not very melt in your mouth kind of texture. The greens were pretty basic... didn't have bacon. And the cowboy beans were pretty standard too. They have a covered setting area and right next to them they have a little crepe/ice cream cart. So Alamo was stop #3 on our 'enjoy every sandwich' road trip from NYC to VA, but for my husband, it was all-the-way number one. Neither of us are from areas of the world known for bbq, but we have honed our skills over the years and are now quite the discerning tasters. Sticking to our road trip theme, we ordered the Alamo Cuban sandwich, with pork. Nice of them to offer other options, but come on, a Cuban should be pork. And this pork was delicious. Lovingly roasted and pulled to tender perfection. The textures in this sandwich were spot on. Crunchy grilled bread and pickles, the softness of the pork. Full of flavor and a generous portion. We also bought a combo platter to go (opting for brisket, ribs, jalapeno Mac n cheese, cole slaw and corn bread), because we can't be at a place with brisket and not try the brisket. My husband was a fan of the ribs, and I was blown away by the brisket. We were a bit 'meh' about the coleslaw, but that's a personal taste. There are about five billion ways to make cole slaw, but you either know how to cook brisket or you don't. And they do. For $13 it was enough for both of us to share for dinner (well, after a day of sandwich eating). But definitely a generous portion for your money. We're already talking about going back when we're next in DC - which still means it is completely out of our way, and we'd only be going to Richmond for Alamo, but I dare say it will be worth it! And for us, quicker than flying to Texas! read more
