I visited Wildwood Bar-B-Que as part of my effort to get a hot dog in every county and incorporated city in Virginia. Wildwood Bar-B-Que was my Powhatan County stop. I arrived shortly after they opened on a Thursday and was the first customer in the place. I reviewed the menu, especially the hot dog options, and went with their BBQ slaw dog and a side of mac and cheese. Service was not overly kind to me but as regulars came in, I saw the hospitality really shine. As I was filling up my drink, I saw all their sauce options and added a side of fries to my order as well as a vehicle for sauce tasting. When my plate came out, I was really pleased with the look of the hot dog. Less so with the sides. I know everything is expensive right now and places are doing their best but $2.50 per side when being given that amount seemed a little off. The Mac and cheese was good, very creamy and cheesy. The fries were hot and crispy. Could have used some extra seasoning. The hot dog was good. I added extra BBQ sauce but the bbq on the dog (NC style) was nice with a good vinegary bite. The slaw was ok. I prefer a smaller chop on the cabbage just for ease of eating. The sauces were all really good with the Wildwood hot being my favorite. read more

Do you ever visit a place and think, man I am going to crave this for the rest of my life? Wildwood Bar-B-Que is that place! We stopped by mid-bike ride for a meal and were grateful for their exceptionally kind and patient service and hospitality. Bathrooms available and ample places to park since it is a part of a shopping center. The staff gave me an overview of the different types of BBQ: NC is more vinegar based, Red is Virginia's take with a tomato base, and Just BBQ is your classic sweet BBQ sauce. I of course had to go with the Red since we were visiting Virginia for the first time! I'm so glad I did. The food came out exceptionally fast and everything was fresh and hot! I seriously can't express how good the BBQ was. It was juicy, flavorful, and everything you'd want from BBQ. I'll be searching for a sauce like that for years to come since I'm not local! The potato salad was also excellent and the mac n cheese, despite being a bit mushy, had a good flavor. I absolutely loved the corn muffins - no notes! The best part of our visit was getting to chat with the locals who approached us asking about our bike ride. They were all very friendly and made me feel as if I was a local myself. I honestly had to double check that this is the same place I ordered from...unfortunately my experience was the complete opposite of the great reviews. Picked up a meal to go on a Saturday around 5- they were completely empty which, looking back, should've been a sign. Got the brisket combo (no bun), green beans and Mac& cheese. The Mac and cheese was okay...green beans tasted like canned beans with nothing added nor any seasoning. The worst part of the meal was the brisket - I am a brisket FANATIC. This had the consistency of beef jerky, if you chose a jerky with no seasoning. It was super tough, fatty in all the wrong areas, and just had zero flavor. I'm so disappointed I paid $12 for this. Pulled chicken and pork was pretty good except for when I called I asked for no slaw on top and ofc it was on top when I got it, no big deal. I've read all of the positive reviews and was eager to try Wildwood since it's near our home and a local business. I've lived all over the US so I consider my taste for BBQ is well rounded. The location is great, the atmosphere is welcoming and clean along with the employees. My issue was the portion size of our orders and the lack of flavor. Did I say lack of flavor? Pork flavor - 3.5/5 Pork tenderness 3/5 Brisket flavor - 3/5 Brisket tenderness- 2/5 Sauces (even though I shouldn't have to use them) = 4/5 This place and the nearby smoking pigz place both suffer from putting their meat in hot bins instead of wrapping them... the moisture continues to circulate through the meat and strips out a lot of the salt/seasoning/flavor and removes most of the brisket crust which is my favorite part. This is one of our local BBQ places that we finally got around to trying. We always drove by it saying that we needed to go in one day, well we finally did! I had some family in from out of town, so we all decided to venture in together. We were not disappointed! I got the all too common pork bbq sandwich with coleslaw on it. It was very well flavored and the bun held up as well which is important. They also have a decent bbq sauce selection that you can choose from for your meal. My wife had the bbq brisket sandwich that she let me try as well, and it was darn good! My brother also got the bbq sandwich that I got and he enjoyed his just as much as I enjoyed mine. Finally, my nephew got the shrimp po boy which was something he had never had before. He liked it as did I (he was kind enough to give me a taste). Overall we enjoyed our food, and the people at the counter were very and helpful with the menu and the choices. Decent amount of seating as well. This place is a definite 4 stars, and we will surely be coming back here more often! read more

First visit to Wildwood. We love BBQ and keep our expectations in check because you kever know what you're going to get. This place didn't disappoint though. We had the St. Louis ribs w/ green beans, greens and fried pickles (pictured). We also had brisket w/ bbq beans (not pictured). Ribs were tender and juicy, the brisket was well smoked. Pulled pork - it's juicy, tender, and you can get it three ways: Plain, North Carolina or Red. (For those who don't know, North Carolina is a vinegar based sauce with tons of spices, and "red" is what everyone north of Tennessee thinks of as BBQ sauce.) The brisket - again, juicy and tender. They slice it thin, so you can eat it piece by piece or pile it on one of their buns and make yourself a sammich. The hushpuppies: Little fried balls of goodness. I could eat these all day. The Mac and Cheese: More like "cheese with some macaroni to thin it out" The Green Beans: Need some sort of meat; bacon, beef drippings, anything. They're good but lacking that kind of "OOMPH!" I want from beans in a BBQ joint. The corn muffins are a bit too sweet for my taste, but that can be said for a lot of food in Virginia. Barbecue was delicious. I agree with other reviewers who claim this is the best barbecue they have had. It is really good. I had the red barbecue; the husband had the North Carolina. Buns were just right. Husband had the barbecue beans and home made potato salad. Both were so good he ate every last bit. I had the green beans which were pretty typical and the Mac and Cheese which was OK by my standards. The place is clean and neat. So happy to have another dining option in Powhatan. This one is minutes from our house so I'm sure it will become a regular spot. This BBQ joint is a very laid back, no frills, order-at-the-counter type of place. The menu was pretty extensive; a lot of selections for sides. I ordered a NC style BBQ sandwich with mac n cheese & baked beans. The food came out to our table lightning fast, was warm, and delicious. The bbq is a pretty healthy serving, I hope that wont change over time! I also got a GIANT sugar cookie which was super fresh and so soft it was breaking in my hands. Yum. Saw this place was new this week so decided to sample a little BBQ. I only tried a couple of the varieties of the pork, and they were absolutely delicious. Apparently the owners of this place provided BBQ for some local events and it was so good people talked them into opening a restaurant. It's too bad I never knew about them before, but I will defiantly be adding this place as a regular take out option. Decided to give a try since several in HOA talked about it. Well BIG I MEAN BIG LET DOWN. 1/2 rack of ribs had no flavor at all. Ribs were either par boiled or steamed then dunked in sauce. Brisket was sliced the wrong way and tough as shoe leather also no flavor to the meat. No smoke ring or smoke flavor at all. So i donated $20.00 to the tax base driving over 10 miles to give this place a try. Will not do that again read more

One and done. Ordered full rack of ribs. Had to wait 10 + mins while they heated them in convection oven. When I got home the ribs were so under cooked and tuff. Determined not to waste 18.00 I wrapped in foil and heated in oven at 225 for 1hr to try save. Still had to use knife to cut ribs. read more
