After having a rough air flight experience, I was hoping to have some relief and friendly and happy faces. When I reached to rent my car with my mom on the wheelchair, extremely exhausted, and ready to head to the hotel. I can't explain the kind of service we were given by associates and Manager almost end of there shift. They had very unique names and beautiful, for sure I am going to mistype but Messiah (manager) and his associates were very patient and helped us out from getting the car, showing the best fit for my mom, that can be comfortable, yet convenient. We ended up renting BMW X7, beautiful car. It was little high for my mom to step up, but Massiah, went above and beyond, he went on search for a stepper so my mom can sit without any inconvenience. Also, he walked me through the car system, since it was my first time driving it. Their service didn't just ended here, while returning, they escorted us to the terminal, the associate didn't just dropped us but stayed there with my mom until I checked in and I had available hands to drive my mom's wheelchair. Rented a Premium car for a long weekend. First time renting at Newark so I was ready for an adventure. Not very clear how to get to the Rental car center from the Terminal. I followed the signs and ended up outside to the pick up waiting area and a parking garage across the street. Think the signs need to be updated. A kind lady at the information desk in the Baggage claim area gave me some directions. Took the Air Train, and with the walk, it was about 20-25 minutes from Terminal C. Once at the station, on the 2nd level I was met by a friendly Greeter (nice touch) that welcomed me and directed me to the check in area. Check in was quick and there was no wait. Unfortunately, they didn't have a Premium (I.e. Maxima) available. After some searching they found me a Volvo B5 which was fine (not sure if I got an upgrade). Newer and had nice acceleration. Return was quick and seamless. Overall good experience and would recommend. read more

The vehicle (Elantra) was clean and comfortable (we were sent there by the expediter in the lot) but it needed serving to address steering and road gripping abilities and it struggled with power and road gripping in the wet weather. read more

I was in need of a car because Drivo rental car changed there policy and would not rent me a car because of a low credit score. WTF??? With a loyalty to Hertz that borders on dangerous, I was reluctant to try someone else but Alamo had a much better price. The check-in and return processes were quick. Fatima who worked in the car area was super-helpful, patiently explaining the virtues of modern technology that I fear (keyless operation). The guys at the desk and the return area were great, too. Instead of a particular car, there are choices within a specific price range. If you're comparing rental car companies out of Newark, I'd say Alamo is a great option. I rented a car from Alamo for two weeks. Pickup up from the Newark Airport was a smooth experience, and the agent was pleasant and efficient. I really appreciated that the car came with an EZ-Pass transponder, to make toll roads easy to handle. Our rental was a Nissan Sentra, very low mileage, and it was responsive and pleasant to drive. Unfortunately, in Boston, the Sentra developed a leak in one of its tires. (Obviously not Alamo's fault.) Luckily it was a slow leak. I called Alamo during business hours (to avoid dealing with an overseas call agent), and they reserved a replacement car for me. I was able to inflate the tire and take the car to Logan Airport, where Alamo swapped the car out. The available car was a Chevy Malibu with 20k miles on it. Frankly, the Malibu was no fun to drive -- it handled like a marshmallow on wheels -- but it did the trick and got us through the rest of the trip. Swapping out the cars was handled well by the agent in Boston, and he too was friendly and helpful. At the end of our trip, we dropped our car back off in Newark, and it couldn't have been easier. There's a gas station right there next to the car rental return area, so it was easy to top off the tank right before bringing our car back. Nice not to have to worry about where to fill up at the end. One point down from five because I discovered later that using the provided EZ-Pass transponder came with a hefty daily fee on top of the tolls, something that the original agent hadn't warned me about. Despite that, I'd still recommend Alamo. Probably the best car rental experience I've had in recent times. read more

First time actually renting a car and it was through Alamo. I have to say I picked this car company rental over others because of the awesome Yelp reviews that were given. It was such a wonderful experience and super memorable. First there wasn't a long line or wait when we got to the desk. Also the lady that was helping us was super friendly and gave us tips and tricks on things to do. Which we greatly appreciated. Pretty fun ride first you have to take the air train to get to P3. Depending on which terminal you end up you just need to follow the sighs to the air train section. Tip- Keep your boarding pass from the airport because they will need it and also bring your driver license and your credit card that you used. Also prior please call your own car insurance to see if they cover car rental coverage or if you would have to buy it through the car rental company. read more

I've never had many problems with rental cars, but this experience was disappointing. The lady at check-in proceeded to ask my partner intrusive questions about an expired license and give her a lecture -- when my partner was in no way trying to rent or be a driver on a car so her information was not relevant. Then the car was awful. The heat/air conditioning were minimally effective at best, the headlight wiring was all mixed up, and the cruise control didn't work. On top of all this, it smelled like cigarette smoke which sets off my migraines. Catching no breaks, on return we had forgotten to fill up with gas and realized once we entered the car rental garage (and once you enter you can't turn back or you'll ruin the tires) so we explained the situation and yes, of course we knew we'd have to pay but he charged us for more gas than we used and when we (luckily) noticed the error, he said he couldn't fix it and we'd have to go back to the main office to fix it. Luckily I wasn't running late and had time but 3/8 of a tank and 1/2 of a tank are fractions consisting of very different numbers and I don't think his excuse about his "big clumsy fingers" is very believable. I think he was trying to get the extra $10 out of us. And honestly? The whole trip should've been discounted after the awful experience with the car, or at the very least you should've written off the gas. But they offered none of those things after I complained about the problems with the car. Poor experience, will not rent from them again. 2 stars only because the car worked and I guess that's better than it not working, and the lady who gave us the car in the lot was also very kind. read more

I recently rented a car from Alamo at the Denver airport. It was my first time renting from Alamo and I was very happy with my experience. Everyone I spoke to at the company was friendly and helpful. I appreciated that they did not pressure me to take their insurance. When I explained that I had my own, the woman who was helping me asked which company I used and that was the end of it. I've gotten the hard sell and a lot of pressure from other companies to take the insurance and at times it's been very uncomfortable. There was no pressure from Alamo and I truly appreciated that. I rented a Toyota Camry that had the ability to connect, via a USB cable, to the map app on my phone and display it on the dashboard screen. This worked fine for a day and then it stopped working. When I turned in the car, I told Adrian about my problem with the display and he apologized and asked if they could do something to make up for it. He got the manager, Katie Rycyzyn, involved and she offered to take 15% off of my bill. I was so pleased! This experience really sold me on Alamo and they will be my first choice the next time I rent a car. read more

(Writing on behalf of my wife) Don't rent your car at this place, especially if you look like a fob like myself. Alamo tries their best to rip our asses up. Looking through other reviews, it seems Alamo is treating everyone else very well. Yeah, we speak English with an accent. I am sure our accent had something to do with their treatment. These savages forced us to buy CDW and extended liability, even though we have mentioned that my credit card provides CDW for rental cars and we already have protection from our car insurance (which the agent did not even try to look at our policy). They claimed that we need to get full protection even though the contract clearly said CDW and extended protection is optional. Otherwise, they said they cannot give the car away to us. We didn't have the energy to fight back and we had a long trip before us. So we moved on. Please don't believe the lowest cost they promised at the time of reservation. They seem to add a substantial amount of extra fees, some are supposed to be optional but forced upon us and some that you cannot get away. At the time of reservation, we got $250ish as the Total Rental Price (deal from Costco travel), but we ended up paying $550ish including $100 ish in CDW and $75ish in extended protection. Thanks Alamo. No wonder why everyone else always recommends top-tier like Hertz or Enterprise. read more

I seem to rotate my choice of companies, so this time we decided to try Alamo. Aside from a location in the "land of nowhere", our experience was not bad. - Location: Be prepared for adventure. Take the Air Train to P2 ( almost the end of the line and home to Dollar and Budget )...then find the shuttle to Alamo for a 5-7 minute ride. The facility is a moderate size right next to one of Newark's most famous landmarks...the Anheuser-Busch manufacturing plant. It's huge and almost saved our lives. More on that later. Leaving the parking lot and finding I-78 wasn't too bad. Coming back from I-78 to Alamo was like a movie. Roads and signs are convoluted...and I'm good at this stuff. ADVICE: Do not follow the signs to "Off Airport Rental Cars". That's for everyone else. Alamo is "off...off...off" the airport. When we parked to read cell phone directions, a policeman stopped to check us out. He had a better idea than I did, but not by much. We followed his suggested turns and got closer, but since most of the nearby streets are one way, I had to somehow get on the southbound lane of Frontage Road. Sounds easy? Not really. As we drove NEXT to Frontage Road heading south, I saw a small sign for Alamo and took the exit...then followed a few more similar signs. Before long, we were in a neighborhood resembling a combat zone video game or apocalypse movie. I felt badly for the people I saw, but we didn't exactly expect a Welcome Wagon, so when I spotted the towering Anheuser-Busch plant 20 blocks away, I floored the pedal and peeled the tires toward the beer. Let's just say it was 15 minutes we'll never forget. Back at the ranch, I asked the parking attendant if there was a less death-defying way to return the car. He said "sure is. I guess the agent didn't give you a map". Nice time to find out. - Service: There were only 2 couples ahead of us at check-in, but we waited 10 minutes because only 1 agent was on duty. Since I had a reservation, we weren't at the counter very long. After declining the various available service options, we tried to find a midsize SUV with the lowest mileage. A trainee said there were 3 and the winner had 27,500 miles. I expressed doubt and asked for a recount. The agent checked himself and said "we've got one with 6,300". We grabbed it before the numbers changed. - Car: Our 2013 Chevrolet Captiva was just washed and had the dried water spots to prove it. Seriously...it looked like a sea of gray measles on dark blue sheet metal.. The interior was clean, but the door panels and dashboard had large scuff marks. We tried to remove them, but quickly realized the only way it would happen is with a thorough detailing job. There were no real problems riding around for 7 days. I wouldn't buy the car, but it served a purpose...and gas mileage was 25-30 miles per gallon. There were few frills inside, but it did come with XM-Sirius satellite radio which allowed us to listen to the same stations as at home. - Convenience: Okay when you're at Alamo. The adventure is getting there. Only 1 agent at 330 PM on a Sunday was a bit skimpy, but there were a few attendants at departure so we only spent 5 minutes before boarding the bus back to P2. - Cost: The advertised cost of $338 for 7 days...including fees and taxes...was at the cheaper end of the pack for rentals at the Newark airport according to several websites. We declined ALL extras, filled the tank just before drop-off and paid the expected bill of $338. - Value: I don't know. Could have been worse? Same as their competitors? Lousy? I must deduct one star for a location requiring the skills of rat hunting for food in a maze. What have I learned from this experience? Don't fly? Only drive to destinations? Use a car rental company with the best reviews on Yelp regardless of cost? I'm leaning toward the latter because trying to save money seems to cost more in the end. read more

Booked through Kayak... Very simple.. Walked right up to the self service kiosk and checked in.. That took a while since they asked too many questions. (Aka do I want navigation, insurance, Childs seat, blah blah BLAH). Once I got the receipt I walked right outside and a friendly attendant told me to choose which car I wanted. The guy named Ronny who seems to like make everyone miserable. The old couple before me needs to show hard copy of something instead of a pic on the phone. Mine is the confusing of middle name as well as somehow my credit card mysteriously not working there. He could not rent anything to me which I had to call the customer service who ensured everything is fine and the lady on the phone made another reservation to be sure to get get through at counter. I waited in line again and this time happened to be a different rep. and everything went smoothly for the same and Previous reservation. In order to make up my waste of time, the rep was nice enough to compensate me free tank of gas. You heard right roaches . i traveled to Puerto Rico, yes my island that is where I am from and i was completely grossed out. A word of warning for people renting from Alamo: they do not include an employee inspection process with the customer before the car leaves the lot. If the car is damaged and you do not mark or see that damage, you will be blamed for that damage. Disputing a claim is like trying to reason with a brick wall. Alamo provided no proof such as a report of past inspections, although the report was requested multiple times. For all we know an employee could've been the one to blame. They also tacked on ridiculous fees to the damage claim such as "Loss of Use" (the car being unavailable due to damage). FYI the blamed damage was purely cosmetic so the car technically could have still been rented. Oh and for the car? The windshield was constantly fogging up even after turning off the re-circulation feature, cranking the heat up and using the defroster. The only method that ended up working was rolling down the window (very refreshing in the dead of winter). So in summary, take pictures of your rental car before leaving the lot and try to convince an employee to do a walk around inspection with you. Or avoid Alamo (or as I like to call it "The Eighth Ring of Hell") all together. read more

Rep at counter was upon arriving at Alamo instead of welcoming me said how may I help you very dry while she looked at her phone and texted lol once I said something about her phone she suddenly became nice. Reserved a mid size and the only car they offered me was a Toyota Corolla which is not mid size. Car was very dirty on the outside. When I asked if they had a clean car they told me it was clean. Ok? Lol Upon leaving the gate you must talk with another agent who is extremely rude and seems like she hates her job. I simply asked her to document the scratches on the car and she refused. It took 15 minutes of talking to her to finally get her out to look at the car. I do not want to be held responsible for damages I did not do. The drop off at the end was great. Super easy. I pay the extra bucks and rent from Alamo when I need a vehicle quick and flying in. No issues with Alamo and I've been here over 10 times in the past 6 months. As a tip some people complain about the fee to get on the airtrain. Just take the bus into the terminal and then hop onto the airtrain (from the terminal) for free and ride into the appropriate terminal that you need. If you're at newark penn station I think you need the 62. Also, the rates change daily. Use priceline to investigate prices then make a reservstion through priceline or what I do is log onto my account on the alamo site and reserve there. Customer service is AWESOME!!!! I just used Alamo at Newark Liberty airport for a very short one day+ trip and I am extremely happy with my choice. From the ladies at the counter, to the gentleman who found me the perfect car in the lot, to the lady who checked me out of the lot, and subsequently the man who checked me in the next day, all were polite and friendly and made my experience very pleasant and quite painless. I'll still check reviews next time I come to Newark, but I have a feeling if current management and workers are there, I'll choose Alamo again.
