The good: I booked through Costco and did the online check-in "Skip the Counter" on the Alamo website the evening before. Hopped off the SFO AirTrain and turned left to literally skip the counter. So far, so good. They did not have a Premium Class car I wanted (only one choice there), though were very friendly and with only a short delay they offered me a clean Luxury Class car for the same rate. Like new. So far, so good. The bad: On the return, the intake gentleman does the walkaround and tells me I'm "all set",do I want a copy of the receipt which will also be emailed? I said yes, he runs off for a moment and returns with one. The total was about $80 heavy with fees that comprised of various airport / concession charges, etc. (I vaguely remembered that there should never be hidden charges and this was a foreign experience compared to past Alamo rentals). In any event, we had to run. But it nagged at me. When I had a chance I compared the receipt line-by-line with the T&C from my booking confirmation email. All the same charges minus a larger top line. I called Alamo. The phone representative was very kind and helpful and was also perplexed. She confirmed that the car upgrade was not the reason and that my receipt confirmed I was only to be charged the "PCAR" rate. She chalked it up to a technical mistake undoubtedly and promptly refunded the overcharge difference to my same credit card. I'm presuming it was a mistake, but notably, the same thing happened to someone else on these reviews two years earlier. I do think it was likely a mistake and that perhaps on the free upgrade, the present day rate of the original booking may have been stored or something along those lines. Still worth noting for prospective users. Fwiw, I will use them again. read more

Terrible experience and incompetent staff. After presenting my documents, I was told that my driver's license was invalid. They referred to a handbook where the issue date of my license was mistakenly interpreted as the expiration date. The woman at the counter insisted that my license had expired when I turned 18--the year it was issued. After I logically explained the situation, she then took issue with the fact that my license has unlimited validity, which is clearly stated on the document. Neither she nor the manager were willing to resolve the situation in any way. They even mocked me, claiming that my international driver's permit had been issued to me by mistake. The manager eventually disappeared, and the woman told me that if I wanted a refund, I should figure it out myself--but not with them. This caused us a significant loss of time and money. And the funniest part? The rental company next door had no issues at all and gave us a car without any problems. I have been trying to contact someone from management for over a month now to clarify the situation. Of course, Alamo does not provide any email or contact form that I could use to send evidence. Since I am abroad, I have to communicate with them through Live Chat. How does Live Chat work? Every time they ask the same questions, and I patiently explain what happened. The worst car rental experience I ever had overseas. Rented a mid-size sedan Toyota Corolla but given a Nissan Sentra in SFO. Car broke down after 2 days with flat battery. Managed to jump start with help of my Airbnb host. Told to drive to Fresno to exchange another car. Given wrong address. When eventually reached the correct location, manager called Oscar was rude and refused to exchange a similar mid-sized car. Claimed did not have any when I clearly saw the car I wanted given to walked-in customers. Insisted that I take the Jeep where no customer wanted, even though he clearly saw my wife with moving disabilities. I had never driven a Jeep in my life and was forced to take the risk. Made a reservation 2 month prior our trip for a 15 seater van . The manager email me 2 weeks prior my trip and tell me they weren't able to provide me the car . And they can accommodate me with 2 car instead . Our original plan was to switch driver to drive in between the trip . Why would I want 2 car ? I have to cancel my reservation. My group of six flew into SFO and needed a large vehicle so we got a suburban. Clean and ready for us we had two extra drivers (3 families) without hassle or charge. We took the "return empty" fuel choice. The total price was great. I noticed after we left the airport (my friend was driving) that we only had 3/4 of a tank and took a photo of gauge and mileage. We called alamo and they noted it without any issues. Upon the return of the car we got a refund for the fuel difference and an extra discount for any inconvenience ( there was none). Please do yourself a favor and do not ever come here. My parents got a rental van for our Disneyland trip, and it was in horrible condition. A complete mess... So much garbage everywhere! As you can see in the pictures I have attached, there were an infinite amount of crumbs, garbage, and stains. There was ALSO a coconut water can, a coffee cup, & an empty plastic-looking snack container on the floor! I really wish they would put an effort to clean their vehicles. our flight was an hour late (thx Southwest). We booked an economy car for 9/20-9/23. We did the online check in and skip the counter and went straight to the area. Went to the economy section, and only one car was left and someone was getting into it. So we head back over and wait in line with the other 8 or so people. We continue to wait. The staff is scrambling trying to just get people into a car and on their way. They offered a pick up truck. We declined. I kept looking for something on the smaller side to drive and I heard Ed scream my name. They offered a 2019 Buick Cascada. E asked do you want it? ABSOLUTELY. Convertible, driving Hwy 1 and up to Stanford. Lets do this. Nice car, great deal because never would we have ever paid convertible prices. Very nice way to drive to Monterey and Santa Cruz for sure! rented online with points for fullsize elite special Audi Sportback. I am 24 policy did not say I couldn't rent this. Got to facility and I cannot rent. Want to take all my points for an economny or full size vehicle. If I didn't have room on my visa ($500 + $300 damage deposit and went to other dealership thanks Avir) I would have been stranded or they would have taken all my points (37,000) for a meh car. called office I hope they honour this and I get my points back even tho 6 hours cancellation time minimum ........... also after I called the office Alamo had no cars left would have been stranded or lost all my points if it weren't for Avir rentals this also made me 2 hours late for my covid test appointment, thankfully I was still able to get it done read more

The Asian guy, "Dan" works there added a "free" extra "day" for my car rental reservation , but really what he did was charged me one extra day of insurance. Oh yeah, it's not a whole day either, he made it sound like it's a whole day free, but really it's only until 11:59 AM. So I was charged $50 extra for the 2 hour extension. Avoid dishonest Dan. Other than that, the return was simple and fast, they just checked if the gas was full. read more

We did a package deal through Delta, and Alamo was our rental car provider. I have to say, it was an extremely easy process. I went to the self service kiosk to check in. I had a problem with the machine reading my card, so one of the attendants came over and helped me with my check in. 5 minutes later, I had my paperwork in my hand and was headed out to pick my car. I showed the man my receipt, he pointed to 2 rows of cars, and told me to pick anyone I wanted. I went with a Chevy Sonic. Decent room inside for it being a "compact" and we got great gas mileage. Return was incredibly easy, too. You pull up, they scan the car, ask if you want a receipt and you are on your way. Very, very smooth transactions and I would definitely rent from them again in SFO. read more

Had a pretty pleasant experience renting here. I booked through Costco Travel and got a very good rate. Ended up being cheaper to do a week rental versus 4 days. The rates change all the time, so try re-checking a bunch of times and testing different rental terms. Booking through Costco, you can cancel without penalty and they show you all the taxes and fees upfront. Service at the rental counter was fine. A staff member was on hand to give out local maps, which I thought was a nice touch. Finding a car was surprisingly easy. I was expecting to be assigned something, but I actually got to choose between 4 different cars they had within the same class. Returning the car was easy at the final destination. I have to say, however, that the condition of the car was a bit rough even though it only had around 12-14,000 miles. There were big scratches on the trunk that looked like someone had run a towel around with a bunch of grit. Not a big problem, I'm sure their cars go through some harsh treatment. read more

We booked online and our reservation was accurate when we arrived. You need to take the airport tram over to the rental car station. When we arrived, there were several lines but only a few customers waiting in each. After a few minutes, we got to a kiosk which had a problem processing our reservation so we moved into a customer service line and was 2nd in line. We were in and out in 30 minutes. We were promptly processed and got to choose a car in the lot. The cars were clean both inside and out. Our mid-size car had a full tank of gas and was brand new. We did not have any problems with the car during the week. Upon return, we did have a different receipt from what we had booked online. We were immediately directed to the customer service desk right at the return lot and got our bill adjusted in minutes. You go back inside and follow the sign for the tram to get back into the airport. read more

BE CAREFUL WITH THIS COMPANY! We booked our car with Sunnycars and already had all necessary insurance. So when we got there we were being served by this employee who's name was Dan (Asian Guy - I do not have a problem with Asians, just mentioning so you know who you have to be careful with). He printed out the papers and wanted us to sign something with an insurance that we would have to pay when we are returning the car. The insurance he put on it and wanted us to sign, he did not ask us whether we are interested in that insurance or was recommending or telling us anything about it... so we asked about it and I was asking wether this is optional and he said "yeah well everything is optional". Be careful with this guy especially if you do not speak English properly. He probably gets commission. It's okay to ask for the insurance maybe some people are interested and don't have the insurance yet but just printing something out without asking and just wait for a signature is not a professional way. Some people may don't read properly and just sign. So since he had to redo the work again and print out the new papers he wasn't happy about that either. If we would have not made this experience with this guy we probably would have given 4 stars since the rest worked out well.... besides that the navigation because we were driving for a long time and when we charged and were driving the battery still went dead so we had to use the phone for navigation every once in a while and since we had limited GB that we were not that happy about that. Also when we got the car there was a lady who just said you can pick that or that car. No explaining, they prefer to talk to each other. The car has been clean and good though. read more

My cell phone was left in the car when it was returned. We came back 10 minutes later to retrieve the phone but no one could find it. Within another 10 minutes it was placed in airplane mode so it could not be tracked. The manager, while helpful in trying to find the phone, indicated that Alamo uses a 3rd party for driving the cars around and they are not responsible for those drivers. WTF? So they have people working for them that interact with the cars and any belongings you leave in the cars, but Alamo takes no responsibility for them. They also indicated that someone from Alamo would contact us the next day after checking lost and found (which they could not access at night), but no one ever contacted us or returned our phone calls. The phone was obviously stolen, and the person who took it knows what they are doing in terms of disabling iPhone tracking. So since Alamo takes no responsibility for anything you leave in the car, even for 10 minutes after returning it, they cannot be trusted and thus you should avoid this place. I wanted to post this review soon after we got our car at the SFO Alamo. The rental car line was packed when we arrived on the tram. An Alamo employee, Paul, was interacting with customers in line, directing some who met a criteria to try the kiosk. My husband did, but he directed me to stay in line in case there were issues. Alamo had a good number of employees calling up those in line. When my husband was nearly finished at the kiosk, Paul came over and got me out of line with directions where to pick up our car. We were met in the garage by another employee who directed us to a row of cars from which we could choose. My only complaint was that only one exit booth was open for about 8 minutes and then three suddenly opened. Overall, a very good experience. We would gladly use Alamo again. read more

1. Loved the kiosk. In and out in 10 minutes. (We were stranded there by AVR (NEVER rent a vehicle from AVR)). Rami was the manager and he was ON IT! So helpful and FAST. 2. Got a great deal on a small SUV or similar ($725 for 13 days). 3. Went to the car area and the attendant read my ticket and pointed to a white SUV. She asked, "will this do?" We went to load up and noted it had a third row of seats. Turns out it was a Nissan Pathfinder. 4. We drove this thing all over Oregon and Northern CA. What a nice, low mileage vehicle (err, at least till we got a hold of it)! 5. I'm am now an Alamo Insider. (And I don't join clubs or the like). The two stars are for the nice employees who work here. But I will never rent a car in San Francisco again. I got it with Costco which was a good deal, but it turns out to be highway robbery. Initially the charge was $139.18. That is a joke. When I turned the car in they tacked on additional fees like $87.44 T&M I do not know what that is, $5.99 for a concession recov fee. What? $1.66 tourism commission rec, $2.50 county bus license tax. Why am I being taxed for someone's business license? $18.00 Air Tran fee. Say what?! I have to pay for the ride from the terminal to the rental car place and back! $6.50 vehicle license recovery again what?!! Then the sales tax $4.68. I lived in the Bay Area for a long time. I am so happy I left. I came for a quick trip and I thought I was getting a deal. I literally feel robbed. It's sad that we live in a world that is so greedy it deceives people into thinking they are paying one price then tacks on another $90.00 not to mention $50 We paid to put a half a tank of gas in the thing. Great experience. I think I will always prefer Alamo from now on. I first booked with another company which made me wait in line for an hour and then announced they did not have any cars left. So I cancelled that reservation and when to Alamo counter. That was 11pm on Friday. The person at the Alamo counter processed me in 2 minutes, excellent price, and in the garage I got free upgrade to a luxury car. It was as quick and efficient as it could be. Next day we discovered that the cigarette lighter does not work so we can't charge our cell phones while driving (likely a fuse has blown). So we stopped by another Alamo location (in Oakland Airport) and were immediately given another car (this time a minivan), again, quick and efficient. Car return was instant as well. I love Alamo. 1st issue is that we rented an infant car seat, i was pointed to a room where there are a while bunch of random seats piled up in the middle of the floor in trash bags, you have to randomly select one, open the bag and repeat as many times as nessisary to find one that fits your needs and is in working order. 2nd issue, these people are a bunch of thieves, if you leave anything in the car for a moment, kiss it goodbye, they pocket it and then say yes someone probably stole it but too many people would have come into contact with the car to be able to track down who took the item, as if that is acceptable. read more

The Alamo counter is on the 4th floor. There was a rather long line at the counter. You can either talk to a human at a counter, or use one of their kiosks. We decided to use the kiosk. I spent more time clicking on screens refusing extra add ons, than clicking in screens related to renting the car. Do you want to buy phone chargers for the car? Do you want to have sirius radio? Do you want to have GPS? There is a lady there to help you out if you are bad with technology. For those of you crossing the golden gate bridge, there is a toll to come back to San Fran. The toll booths will take pictures of your car plates, and Alamo will charge you a fee for that service, I think it was $4.99 or something + toll. After clicking through all these extra screens, we finally walked to the parking lot to pick our car. There were about 4 choices, so we didn't really have much of a choice. Returning was ok. I always find it hard to find gas stations near the car rental and have to drive 8 min just to find a gas station. Other than that, it was a fairly quick process. Somebody will pop in to your car, check on a few things and you are good to go. read more

We made a sudden plan to go for a road trip on a Sunday evening. The Alamo on San Francisco was closed and us being 23 and under it was very hard to even get a SUV that would fit 7people. We made it in the hope to get a car at San Francisco Airport. The guy who helped us was super nice and even gave us a sweet deal. Overall fun trip and if I ever need to rent a car again definitely going with Alamo Car rentals.
