I had a socket that kept shorting out my water heater. My husband and father in law were certain that it a specific socket, but they could never fix the problem. I called Alan and he came over the same day. He did a thorough inspection and said it wasn't what they were thinking. He found the actual problem and fixed it that day. He was upfront about the cost to fix it correctly, and his prices were good. He also do a great job. It's been about a month and we haven't had the problem any more. Worst contractor ever. He left a $21.5k job after second to final payment with last payment being around 10%. There are so many problems. 1. New sewage line leaks and damaged my ceiling 2. Huge gap between carpet and new tile 3. Poor finishing touches between vanity and other areas 4. Left closet unusable and I had to build everything myself 5. His sub contractors called me saying Alan never paid them 6. Hot water doesn't work because his team mixed the cold and hot pipe together. Attached are a few sample pics. Type of work we did: Fix radiant ceiling heat wires Re-plaster all ceilings (approx 1000 sq ft) Paint entire condo (knockdown texture) Recessed lighting Added light & switches in 3 bedrooms Demo'd all closets Some laminate floor work Some tiling New doors installed Happy with the experience. Wouldn't say they are the cheapest but if you go with someone cheaper you probably get what you pay for. We didn't have any issues. I can't see anyone having those nightmare contractor stories that you see on TV or hear about with Alan Goldberg. We called them on a Saturday. He sent his foreman that morning to discuss the job and the job was big enough that Alan had to come and see for himself. So he made time for us on his day off to come meet us at our new home. If he hadn't responded quickly we would have been in a huge bind and probably would've had to cut down on things we wanted to do. Alan recommended many changes to our new home that we are extremely happy with. Having never been homeowners, it could have cost us a lot more if we tried to do things later (not to mention inconvenience). We do not regret a single thing that Alan recommended. So I think if you are somewhat unclear on what you want to do, Alan can guide you. We were in a difficult situation. Alan and several other contractors said it would be difficult to finish in the 5 days we needed them to finish in (for our move in day). Alan's crew not only finished on time but also did several add ons. Another one of the things that I think Alan takes pride in is customer satisfaction. He and his foreman really try to accommodate any last minute changes. And they kept their word and came back twice to fix minor things we noticed. And that's not to say their work isn't good, because we really rushed them. We were moving in as they were finishing up and were happy that we got to move in on time. Alan's foreman, Cesar, is a really great guy too. He doesn't make you afraid to ask questions, ask about additional things or to point out things even while they are hustling to finish their job. Really good experience with him. Might be worth 5 stars but I'd feel more comfortable with 4.5 stars if anything. And the minor things were just touch up items that they probably would have caught if we didn't squeeze them on time. Either way, big or small, they would come back to fix things. He was hired by my building management company (not me) to fix the roof- his workers literally broke through the ceiling and destroyed a bunch of my things when a piece of wood fell (I was there when it happened), he refused to pay to fix my stuff, denied it was his fault somehow, and "fixed" the roof by placing a piece of wood with nails sticking out of it- I had to spend months taking him to court, he lost, twice because he appealed the decision, lost again, then threatened me over the phone saying I should watch my back when I asked him to cover the costs to fix the things his company and workers broke. Avoid this guy. All I want is my things to be back in the condition they were in before these guys came by, you can be sure if anything goes wrong during their work he won't take responsibility and won't take any measures to fix it. read more

I must say, my first experience with Alan's company was a disappointment. Stay with me people, it gets better. I booked an electrical appt and a week later they were a no show. I was frustrated at the wasted time, but Alan stepped right up, come next day and investigated the issue. A good family ran business where you get to talk to the owner and he actually does the work. That's a rarity in this day and age. Our electrical is old and funky (low voltage relay system) that few electricians know how to work on. We have paid a pretty penny to people who don't know how to work on it. I think we may have to look no further as we've found our guy. in a word: AWESOME!!! like others i followed the great yelps to Alan, calling him midday after the second day of spotty power and surges. He was in his van, and asked me to email him the details and address and he'd call me back.I noticed that his office was literally 2 blocks away from me, so sent a google map along as well. A couple hours passed without a call back, so i thought, "oh well, must have gotten busy..." About 30 seconds after i had that thought i heard my front gate open and there's Alan: he figured he'd just come by, since he was so close. He discovered the problem right away, fixed it and replaced some shoddy work by the previous contractors. Took about 15 minutes and charged me a more than fair price for his work. Unfortunately, I have to give Alan just one star. We called him to ground an outlet before our new microwave was going to be installed. The outlet worked for years with our old microwave but when we took the old microwave out we noticed it was not grounded. Alan came over later that day and fiddled with the outlet. He noticed the wiring was old and pulled out the wires altogether. He was rushed and ended up pulling more wires in the garage wall and broke the drywall in the garage doing so. Once he tried to plug something back into the outlet he realized it now was broken. He checked the breaker box and everything and said he would have to come back to fix what he had messed up bc he had another appt to get to. So we had a working outlet but once Alan worked on it and pulled the wiring out he completely broke it and now it doesn't work. We told him the microwave was going to be installed in a few days and he said he would come back before the install but he didn't know his schedule and for us to call his office to schedule an appt. Over the next three days we called numerous times to all of his numbers and left many messages. We never heard back from Alan. Not one call back after he pulled all the wiring out, made a hole in the garage wall to figure out what he did wrong, broke the outlet, promised to come back to fix what he did...we never ever heard back from him. I would avoid calling him and having him do any electrical work for you. Unless you want him to make your situation worse and not fix anything at all. He clearly is not interested in small jobs...he made it clear when he was working that he was in a hurry to go to another job. So I guess his way of making a point is to completely break our outlet and not fix it when it was 100% his fault. read more

I called Alan Goldberg Electric today after reading his reviews on Yelp! I had called several others electricians from the phone book this morning. All of them wanted to charge me between $60.00 to $99.00 just to show up at my home. My roommate had just moved out and basically trashed the room and had done unauthorized electrical work and now the lights didn't work. In addition, I had some other electrical repairs that needed to be made. Alan himself showed up and assessed the situation. He didn't charge a service fee just to drive to my house. He worked quickly and didn't nickel and dime me to death. In addition, he charged me a reasonable rate which was greatly appreciated especially since it was a holiday weekend. My boyfriend is in LA and I'm here in NYC and I got a panicked call from him that the toilet was overflowing and he was ankle deep in gross water, too busy trying to clean up the gross mess to try to find a plumber. I called around to a bunch of places and booked someone who wasn't able to be there for 5 HOURS!!! It seemed so hopeless!! Just then Alan called me back and said he had a guy on his way over. I hired Alan Goldberg for an extensive upgrade to my 1970s two-bedroom condo. His work exceeded my expectations. I would not hesitate to use his services again (and probably will) or to recommend him to friends and neighbors. The work included removing the acoustic ceiling (the cottage cheese or popcorn, as some people call it), painting the entire place, putting crown moulding in the bedrooms, ripping out the fluorescent lighting in the kitchen and removing a particularly ugly light fixture and replacing it with recessed lighting and putting in new doors and door handles throughout. He upgraded all the electrical outlets and switches. He seems to have a compulsive need to fix things that are broken. He repaired the air conditioning and three slow drains (which required a trip to Home Depot for parts) for only the price of the parts, even though they weren't part of the project. Even though the bathrooms also weren't part of the project, he put in new lights, removed some mold from a skylight and even painted and scrubbed the place clean. He didn't charge for this. His crew was friendly, respectful of my property and highly skilled. They did great work. A few small cracks in the walls, possibly caused by the building settling over the years, are gone. My place looks great. I went on vacation while the work was done. When I returned a week later, the crew was cleaning up. He had 7-8 men working full-time on the project. He even brought in someone to dust and polish my furniture when they were done. He has a good sense of what looks great and what needs to be done. He and his crew (his wife works with him) put in long days 7 days a week to get the job done. read more

As our kids transition to elementary school age, my husband and I made the desicion to buy a summer home in Venice Beach, CA. As we guessed, it was quite a shock to see the prices of real estate in Venice compared to Sacramento, but we loved the location and really committed to make this happen. So, we vowed to economize wherever and as much as possible. We were able to find something in our price range by purchasing a forclosure property, but it made us a bit anxious that it was a complete fixer upper. Until the summer, we have our hands pretty full, so DIY was completely out of the question. We knew that we could save some money by hiring "economy" contractors - in other words, unlicensed, and uninsured operators who would probably cost less than the more legit licensed ones...but, we had heard WAY too many horror stories from friends and neighbors about such individuals abandoning the job once they got your deposit - or things falling apart soon after project completion and they would "disappear" when you tried to reach them. These neighbors' homes ended up turning into "money pits" when they had to hire legit contrators to fix or finish the jobs. Anyway, in Venice, we really loved the traditional Venice Beach Bungalow aesthetic and wanted to keep the structure and remodel it instead of tearing it down, BUT we were also on a pretty tight budget. We shopped around and hoped ot find someone who would work within our budget in a house that looked like it would have many potential problems "pop-up". Not only that, but we were looking for some design consulting from the contractor. We didn't have the budget for an interior designer, so we figured that a contractor with a good eye for design would do just fine. After many hours of reading reviews, looking at portfolios, and asking LA friends for recommendations, we narrowed it down to three companies, including Alan Goldberg Contractors. When we met first met with Alan, we knew immediately that we were in the right hands. My mother needed the ceiling fan in her bedroom replaced and the wiring on that fan and the one in her living room brought up to Code. (Apparently you're not allowed to just have a cord tacked across the ceiling and running down the wall to a plug. It must either be covered with special moulding or run behind the ceiling and walls, and then connect to a switch. Who knew?) I had gotten a couple of bids, but I had to take Mom's finances into consideration and the bids were too high. My sister sent me a link to electricians in the area and I found Alan Goldberg. His men came out and took a look and gave Alan a report about what they thought should be done. He wanted to check it out personally to see if it was possible to do the job a different way (it wasn't), and then he did the work himself with one of his men. Scheduling was a little tough, but it was worth the wait. He showed up on time and worked quickly, and he did his best to keep the cost reasonable. I contacted Alan Goldberg Electric/Contractors for an estimate for some recessed lighting and some drywall repair. They came out Saturday morning promptly during the time of the appointment and provided a summary estimate within a day. Great. I had a few questions and asked for a more detailed estimate including materials & supplies, labor, and markup. They provided the requested info. Still great. I reviewed the new estimate breakdown and realized the markup was 40% of materials & supplies and labor. I asked if they would be willing to lower that to 30% (about $125 difference). I thought it wasn't a big amount and I would likely still have used them either way because so far it's been great. I was replied with an email (by accident I'm assuming) from the assistant to Alan with the following: "He thinks that the profit of $- is too high and wants to jew us down." I'm not Jewish and still I found this statement extremely offensive. Needless to say, I will not be using Alan Goldberg Electric/Contractors for this or any future projects.
