I usually have great luck finding home service pros on Yelp but unfortunately my experience with Alex & Alex electrical was disappointing. Scheduling with them initially was a little confusing - first we were messaging through Yelp, then text, then they sent me to their website. They were communicative but I never knew which channel to reach out to first. They did come out quickly which was appreciated. The first two gentleman that came to replace my fan and fix my ceiling light were not great. They would look at something, and then disappear and call someone and be on the phone with someone while they were looking at the fan or light fixture, almost like they were calling someone and asking them what they should do. Shouldn't they know? They were at my house for HOURS. WAY longer than I think they should have been. They would just look at the light fixture and talk to each other for like 5 minutes, then step out to make a phone call, then come back and start working on it. Over and over and over. They took a brand new fan out of the box and replaced it, but it wobbled like crazy (turns out they just didn't put the fan together really well because the second guys that came back made it much better). When they replaced my dimmer switch and celiing light, it looked AWFUL. Wasn't flush to the ceiling at all. They told me just to patch it, but this clearly needed more than a patch! I couldn't believe they just left it like that. I called and told them I was unhappy with their work, and they offered to come back and fix it. The second guys that came back were in and out so fast. They fixed the light and it looks perfect, just as it should. Clearly the first guys that came out had no idea what they were doing. Disappointed to have had a less than stellar experience, considering how highly reviewed they are. It must depend on what service folks you have come out to actually do the work. read more

I am extremely happy that I chose Alex & Alex Electrical Services to upgrade the electrical on my two apartment buildings. This was a complicated upgrade since it required input, inspections, and permits from LA DWP and LA Department of Building and Safety. I needed a LA DWP Service Planning Request for a Meter Spot because I was joining the electrical from two apartment buildings into a new 9 Gang 400 Amp Surface Mount Panel. I needed a new vertical conduit and horizontal riser, grounding system, underground PVC conduit, new sub panels, breakers and surge protectors for each apartment and other technical electrical work. I am fastidious and careful when hiring contractors and so I interviewed and had 12 electricians provide me with information about their services, scope of work and bids for my project. Prices ranged from $40,000 to $90,000, so I really had to understand the project, the work that each was bidding on and their experience and expertise in handling the technical workload and the the workers who would be involved. My contact at the company was Alex Baykalov. He was very professional, had excellent communication skills to explain the project and to walk me through the steps and the process involved. He explained how he and his crew worked and how he would follow through to the end until we received the approved permits. He did not try to oversell me (a lot of other electrical contractors left out the specifics in their contracts and did not communicate about the timeline for completion of the job or about their workers. Alex and Alex's price was very competitive, not the cheapest and not the most expensive, but a fair price compared to the other contractors and with specified work in his estimate. Alex had a crew of about 7-8 people who came out and completed this project in a timely basis without major disruptions to my tenants. In fact, my tenants complimented the crew and thanked me for choosing this company. When I had questions during the project, Alex was prompt in getting back to me. If there was something that needed attention, Alex sent his workers over to fix the problem. Alex was never pushy and their billing process was smooth. The workers were very meticulous in their work, were very professional and knowledgeable, and cleaned up every day that they were there so there was no mess or trash lying around the apartments. Just to sum up again, Alex Baykalov provided excellent service and was easy and comfortable to work with, his workers had great work ethic and technical skills, and the job was done in a timely manner and we passed all inspections. And to top everything off, the price Alex quoted was the price I paid for the job. I hired Alex & Alex to replace my electrical panel, including costs for a permit from the city, but they have totally stiffed me on the city permit. I have reached out by email and phone multiple times and not once have they responded. I'm in an HOA and a dozen other owners are in the same position. They actually provided a list of units still awaiting permits, citing delays with the city. However other electrician are getting permits pulled and inspected every day. I would love to change this review but they need to sort out the permit. We're going on 3 months now. Be warned. Refuse to pay until you have your permit in hand. read more

Very sad to have to leave a less than stellar review here, but the service we received for the installation of our consumer electric meter was not up to this company's usual standards. Having worked with them on a previous project, we thought we should call them up for our next one. After what seemed to be a successful initial installation by the team, we later discovered that the electric meter they installed for us was not functioning properly. We notified them of the issue on 6/30, and they said they could come by on 7/3 to take a look. When 7/3 came, they said they didn't have the part on hand to fix it and would need to reschedule after the part arrived. I followed up again the next week on 7/7 to see when the part would arrive and they said they would check but didn't get back to me at all that week. I followed up again the following week on 7/14 and they said the part was now on hand and that they could come by to do the repair on 7/15 between 1-3pm. At 3pm on 7/15 they were a no show, so we reached out again and they said they had an unforeseen issue and would need to reschedule to the following day. The next day they finally showed up, did the repair and had everything up and running within an hour. I don't know why it took so long to get them out for this repair. We are pretty close to the far edge of their service area, so it's possible that may have contributed to the scheduling challenges. But putting aside the scheduling and communication issues noted above, these guys obviously know their stuff when it comes to electrical work and are super nice. They (eventually) helped us get the right solution to meet our needs of installing an electric meter to measure our ADU's electrical usage. But overall, we felt like they weren't proactive about helping us fix the meter we shelled out $1000 for them to install (to be fair, they informed us that the part alone was half of the cost). We had to keep pestering them and it kind of felt like we were low priority. It left us very confused and frustrated because we see all the great reviews they have and know that they are capable of better service than what we received. read more

I hired the company to replace all of the panels and electrical panels at my apartment building. I primarily dealt with the younger Alex. He seemed to be very knowledgeable and know what he was doing. During the project, I showed it to a couple of contractors I know and they said it looked like he was doing a very professional job. The only reason I gave four stars instead of five is because the project dragged on for 10 months. One of the issues was that each time there was an inspection, a different inspector showed up and wanted changes from what the previous inspector had okayed. That seems to be part of doing business in Los Angeles and I don't hold Alex responsible because he was quick to make each change an inspector wanted. But there were also long periods of time when nothing was being done, perhaps because they were working on a different project. Would I use the company again? If it were a smaller project that didn't take as long, absolutely! Without a doubt! The work quality was excellent, communication on issues was excellent and Alex was easy to work with. I used Alex for a very large residential project and would definitely use him again. --- DETAILS BELOW --- Reasons: - He is trustworthy. He did what he said he was going to do and charged what he said he was going to charge. When I went over the invoice with him, we discovered a few *minor* places where I was charged for things I should not have been, and he took them off. He actually said he likes it when they discover an issue, in the sense that it means they can reduce their client's bill! Some of these billing inaccuracies were things that I could not have verified, myself, so he had to verify w/ his crew, and he came back and did the right thing by correcting the bill even though I would have been none the wiser if he had lied. For other things, I clarified to him what was done, and he made the necessary corrections. To be clear, these were *minor* oversights. His crew did a large residential project for me and there was a *lot* to keep track of. - He spent probably 2-2.5 hours with me over the course of 4-5 phone calls, planning and explaining the project to me to help me make the best decisions regarding what work to get done, when to do it, and how to do it so as to minimize impact on the tenants. - He was ok w/ periodic phone call check-ins (this was a large project and I was not living on-site). - He communicated well, enabling me to coordinate with the person doing the patching - Covered everything, including the floor, with plastic/etc to minimize the dust that got in the house - He was *close* to meeting the timeline he gave for the work (details below) - As far as I can tell, his crew did quality work, and went beyond the 'bare minimum' required to pass inspection, in terms of grounding the wires, if I recall correctly. Since the final corrections, the tenants have not informed me of any issues. Work done: - installed dual service panel and subpanel on main house - rewired all cloth wiring (greater than 50% of the house) - added 15-25 of outlets, and moved a few - added 22-28 recessed lights, replacing some existing lighting and removing some - added light switches and bathroom fan switches - installed electric car charger Room for improvement: this was a large project being done on a rental property and the crew took the project down to the wire. They finished up as the tenants came back from a multi-day trip. Due to rushing at the end, they did not manually verify all the outlets were working. The tenants discovered some were not and then Alex's crew came back and addressed everything (free of charge, of course).
