Over the past year, we have been trying to find the right oral surgeon for my son's wisdom tooth extraction. I wanted to make sure we found the right surgeon because when it comes to wisdom teeth, there is risk involved. One of my close friends, for instance, had an extraction which resulted in the loss of taste and permanent feeling in half of her tongue. She was an aspiring chef who needed to change her career as a result. Finding a highly skilled surgeon with substantial experience, but who also has reputable training and educational background, are therefore qualifications I feel very strongly about. (I learned that Dr. Chun has been practicing in San Ramon supporting the community for over 20 years, and received his education and rigorous training from Harvard Medical School.) It was recommendations from my son's friends which made us aware of Dr. Chun. Two of his friends at DVHS were patients of Dr. Chun's over the years, and described their operations as very smooth with absolutely no complications and a fast recovery time. However, because we live in an age where we tend to trust negative feedback from strangers on Yelp, admittedly, I was hesitant at first. We decided to see another surgeon in the area who had "better average scores" on Yelp. I won't go into the details of that experience, but something felt off and not quite right at the other place. Whether it was the mannerisms of that other staff or the surgeon, what was explained to us - everything felt a bit rushed and not very caring. Rather than feeling like a patient, we felt like a number. We decided to try Dr. Chun for a consult as well. The experience between the two offices was night and day. At Dr. Chun's office, the front desk assistant Stephanie went over all of the billing details for us after contacting the insurance company while we were receiving our consult. There were several nurses that helped us during the consult, but Jill in particular was so kind and patient with our questions, helping to fill us in in terms of what we would expect before, during and after the procedure. When Dr. Chun came in, he was very kind but direct in terms of his prognosis, giving us the confidence that my son would be in good hands. The surgery went smoothly the day of. Everyone in Dr. Chun's team was so supportive. Stephanie went above and beyond to share her updated findings with the insurance company without my further asking, and had found a way to decrease the overall expected out-of-pocket total. When I noticed my son was a little bit scared and just mentioned this to Stephanie matter-of-factly, Stephanie told me not to worry - and quickly rushed to tell the nurses so that they could take further steps to assure and comfort him prior to the surgery. After the surgery was completed, I was led in to see my son. I was expecting to see him disoriented and in pain, but he was in good spirits. While he couldn't speak much, I could tell from his body language that everything went smoothly and he was really taken care of. The lead nurse, Jill, proceeded to carefully detail all of the things we needed to think about, such as how to best fold the gauze, position and replace them, and when to plan all of the different medication (including medication for pain relief, anti-nausea for patients who may be sensitive to the pain relief medication, and for anti-swelling.) The team also suggested I could repark my car so it would be closer to the back exit so my son wouldn't need to walk as far. Jill carefully helped to support him every step of the way back towards the car. Even though I knew Dr. Chun had another patient, he also came out to say hello and to let me know that everything went smoothly with the operation. He even thoughtfully noticed that my son didn't put on his seatbelt and suggested he not forget to do so. My son's operation was 10 hours ago. To my astonishment, he is essentially fine right now, no bleeding, minimal swelling, is already talking to me, laughing and playing video games. You would not know that he had 4 of his impacted wisdom teeth removed earlier that same day. If you're looking for an excellent oral surgeon in the San Ramon, Danville, Pleasanton, Livermore or Dublin area and are hoping to find a caring supportive team, from scheduling to billing and insurance support to the nursing staff - to most importantly, receiving the highest level of experience, skill and precision with minimal complications - you don't need to look elsewhere. So, my parents, wonderful people they are, blessed me with crappy teeth. Not only is my mouth too small for all the teeth I own, but I was also born with a few teeth missing. Genetics suck! Thanks to Dr. Chun, I am several teeth lighter, and I set off the metal detector at the airport. Dr. Chun pulled my teeth, and it was not half as bad as my friends described it to me. I need a teeth extraction and look for good surgeon around me. I called and asked several oral surgeons offices in San Ramon, Dublin and Pleasanton area and most of them said I need to see Dr first for consultation then they will give me an estimate. However this office never asked about consultation but price. And their estimated price is a couple hundred dollars higher than other local oral surgeons offices. I am just wondering how the receptionist informed the costs of extraction right away on the phone in few minutes without seeing patients condition. The worst experience by a doctor and office staff! Consult appt was for 9:00 and at 9:45 they said the Dr. was delayed in surgery but would be with me in 15 minutes. Was brought in at 10:05, told it would be another 15 minutes. At 10:30 said it would be about 10 minutes. No apology. Dr. Chun walks in at 10:45, did not introduce himself, did not apologize. No, "Nice to meet you". Nothing. His demeanor was of complete arrogance. He rolled his eyes at the referring DDS's opinion. I will never set foot in his office again. There are plenty of oral surgeons in the area and my recommendation would be to seek someone else out. read more

Was referred to Dr. Chun by my regular dentist to have a tooth extracted. Since I have two implants in my mouth by an oral surgeon who is retired I pretty much know the process. My appointment was for 2:50p.m.. I was taken into the office a little after 3p.m. which is fine. Instead of meeting with Dr. Chun I was taken into a room where the doctors staff spent a good hour figuring out how much the procedure would cost me and telling me I had to pay right then as they have no billing procedures. But they could not come up with a final price because they were not sure what Dr. Chun would do once he began the extraction and bone graft for the implant in six months. After an hour Dr. Chun arrived and spent a considerable amount of time trying to learn what brand of implants were in my mouth. Finally he told his staff he needed a full mouth x-ray. This took three separate attempts because they, in my opinion, did not know how to work their x-ray machine including an attempt by Dr. Chun himself. By now it was getting close to 5p.m. and still no extraction started. I was taken into another room where I learned the procedure would be performed in. A member of his staff took an impression of my lower jaw (tooth to be extracted was on the bottom) and then she swabbed my mouth with some novocain before Dr. Chun gave me the final injections of novocain to begin the procedure. This happened three times over a period of time as Dr. Chun was nowhere to be seen. Finally at what must have been around 5:30 or later he came in and did the procedure. Keep in mind my appointment was for 2:50p.m. It turned out the doctor had taken another patient who had a later appointment ahead of me for who knows why. As I walked out I was given a sheet of instructions to change the gauze every 1.5 hours and to use ice packs. None of these were provided to me. I guess I was expected to go to the drugstore to get these while the gauze in my mouth turned a nice red from the bleeding. My previous oral surgeon always provided this. Also no follow up call was made the next day to see how I was doing another item my previous oral surgeon always did. On a follow-up appointment four days later to remove the stitches his assistant tried but then requested Dr. Chun to do it. Dr. Chun came over from working on another patient and just started in. He did not put any gloves on or wash his hands which is totally unsanitary. My wife let him know it and he made several excuses. I told him we would not be using him to do the actual implant and why. Paid my bill and left. In my opinion Dr. Chun has earned his one star and if I could give him a lower one I would. read more

Got a call from a collection agency reaching out on an unpaid invoice from 2012!!! It's 2015! Not a single phone call ever made to our home regarding the unpaid claim from Dr. Chun's office. Really disappointed to have to write this review. We met with Dr. Chun and his staff to get my son's wisdom teeth out. All seemed great. Staff was nice, Dr. Chun tried hard to relate to our teenager and we were all set to go. They checked the insurance and although it was going to be expensive ($1000) the staff explained this was because we had hit our annual limit. Bummer, but insurance companies suck, right? Then we happened to talk with a neighbor who said they were able to get a much better deal from their insurance provider by running it through their medical plan because the teeth were "impacted". Started to ask Dr. Chun some questions. Can we use medical plan instead of dental? Are there other ways to reduce the fee? Got a lot of insurance jargon and runaround instead of answers, like they were trying to hold back information. So this got me even more worried and when I started asking direct questions about the insurance, it turns out they were not a covered provider with my insurance, and as a result didn't have the option to bill medical or use some other allowed strategies to get my out of pocket cost down. They knew all about these other strategies and instead of being honest and saying they didn't work with our insurance, they hid behind jargon and told us the best we could do was pay $1,000. If you choose to use Dr. Chun, please do so at your own risk. We have no complaints medically; we found him by recommendation and have never had any reason to doubt his expertise. But apparently Dr. Chun and his office staff feels it is acceptable to look you in the eye and lie and charge people ten times what they need to pay. Like I say, really disappointed to write this review. It could easily have been a very positive experience. read more

My husband was also referred to Dr. Chun for a tooth extraction. I had no problem scheduling the appointment and over the phone, the secretary was quite pleasant. When my husband arrived for his appointment however, the secretary was not helpful at all. She sat behind a closed glass window and only bothered to open the window to hand my husband forms to fill out. There was also another patient there who was protesting an overcharge on her bill. Apparently, the patient had thought an agreement had been made on amount of charges and thus, was surprised by the bill. My husband had no problem filling out the forms, although many of the questions were redunant. He did, however, have problems with a wavier that he had to sign. The wavier absolved the dentist office of responsibility of billing the insurance company. Instead, the patient was suppose to be responsible for the billing and if payment was not received on time, the office would charge up to 18% APR interest. We have no problem paying bills, but 18% is unreasonable. When my husband tried to ask for clarification, the secretary was unhelpful and was full of attitude. From the other reviews, it sounds like the doctor's services are wonderful, but his administrative services definitely are not. We were pretty upset and did not bother staying for a consultation. read more

Ten years ago I had the joy of needing 4 teeth extracted to assist with my orthodontic treatment. I was referred to Dr. Chun by my orthodontist and I cannot say enough great things about him. The surgery went very well, I don't remember anything, and best of all NO SWELLING! I have heard horror stories about pain and swelling so bad you look like a chipmunk. Not me! I just had some major dental surgeries (including 2 teeth extraction, temporary anchorage device, impacted tooth exposure, bone grafting...you name it...He did all the work in only one session, and I healed very fast. He is a great character, friendly. He makes jokes and makes you feel very comfortable. In my first visit for consultation, he spent 2 hours with me going through the x-rays, explaining different treatment options and he was very thorough. He answered all of my questions. Too bad you can't give people negative stars. No issues with Dr. Chun's medical knowledge, but after a recent visit we find out they lied to us about our insurance. We find out a day before they procedure, and cancel because the fees are much higher than they should be. So now after they lie to us they want to charge a $200 cancellation fee! Not sure how people this deceptive can stay in business. If you are referred to Dr. Chun just make sure you ask a lot of questions about exactly how you will be billed and which insurance he takes. I have been a patient of Dr Chun's for over 12 years. Across that time, I have unfortunately needed 2 tooth implants and am currently on my 3rd. To make matters worse, I have pretty bad bone loss and have needed bone grafts done along with the implants. First of all, Dr Chun's work is impeccable. I wouldn't know this myself, but having had 3 dentists during the last 12 years, they have reviewed with me their xrays and commented how impressed they were with the oral surgery work. Secondly, Dr Chun is thorough in his explanation so that I understand all my options and also know what to expect. I especially appreciated this the first time I had to undergo the procedure. It went so smoothly, I have never considered having anyone else perform my implants. Lastly, Dr Chun is extremely caring. He consistently follows up with personal phone call after each step of the procedure to ensure there are no problems. Stephanie and everyone in the office staff are friendly and welcoming. For the reasons above I highly recommend Dr Chun. I was really taken aback when I read one review that described him as rude and arrogant. I personally cannot imagine him being either - definitely not rude. This guy knows his stuff and if you look into his credentials, he is as accomplished as you can get. Called Dr. Chun's office today to schedule an appointment to have my last two wisdom teeth pulled; my other two wisdom teeth were emergently pulled a couple of years ago by Dr. Chun and his dental assistant Anna Marie. My experience was as good as could be expected given the circumstances and Dr. Chun and Anna Marie were very professional with a personal follow-up call from the doctor, so I thought it best to return. Stephanie answered the phone today and seemed helpful until she told me that I would have to come in for a consultation. When I questioned her need for a consultation because I wasn't required to do this before, she did not have a direct reason other than discussing medical history and then she reassured me she knows what she is talking about because she has worked for Dr. Chun for 15 years and this has always been his policy. Apparently this was not his policy when I showed up two years earlier and had my wisdom teeth pulled the same day without a consultation. Thank God Stephanie was not a part of my experience on that day. Then she asked why I need to be seen. I told her I wanted to have my two remaining wisdom teeth extracted. She told me that my records indicated I had my two upper wisdom teeth (1 and 16) pulled. I told her that was the wrong information; I had my two right side wisdom teeth pulled. She was insistent about her documentation being correct. I guess she really thought I would not know which teeth I had remaining in my head. Then she told me she was going to have the doctor speak to me about his policies and immediately put me on hold. I hung up the phone because I didn't need to speak to the doctor or waste his time for such silliness. I called back a few minutes later and Anna Marie answered the phone, I recognized her accent. She was very sweet to me on my first visit so I was hoping to get a little further. Unfortunately, after hearing my reason for calling she put me on hold for four minutes and then came back on the phone to tell me that, "the doctor was not willing to meet my demands." I asked, "what demands? Did I do something wrong?" Anna Marie told me she was not too sure what happened because she didn't hear all of the conversation but she was clear that I was not going to be seeing Dr. Chun to have my wisdom teeth extracted. That was the end of our conversation. I called back a few minutes later to ask for a copy of my medical record with the incorrect information documented but no one would answer my call. Call my regular dentist and learned that a letter was sent to them regarding the extraction of my wisdom teeth with the wrong information being provided. Whether Dr. Chun decides to doctor his documentation or not remains to be seen. That is my story and this is what our experience in healthcare currently is. We have to get through the receptionist who has worked there forever and whatever she tells the doctor is what really happened and the patient can be whatever Stephanie wants them to be when she is having a bad day. Oh.....wait a minute, according to yelp, Dr. Chun's "receptionist" seems to have these days often and I assume we all are talking about the same person. Gone are the days of a warm and friendly reception in a medical office because nowadays you can't find this anywhere. Healthcare professionals and their receptionists don't care about you (they care about covering for each other) and clearly they are not going to lose their job for not caring about you if they have been employed for 15 years by the same person with terrible reviews on yelp. What does that say about Dr. Chun? And what does that say about every person who has had a bad experience with Stephanie and has not said anything about it? Well, I have to yelp and this oral surgeon's office will be getting a copy of this posting mailed to them along with all the other negative posts about this one "receptionist". I had a tooth extracted and bone graft. I always dread the experience of going to the dentist and have a very low pain threshold. I have to say that Dr. Chun made the experience much more manageable than I could have ever asked for. He explained everything in detail, answered all of my questions, gave me options and followed up to make sure I was okay the evening of the procedure. Dr Chun has a very warm and professional office. His staff is very friendly and customer service oriented. Dr Chun goes to great lengths to ensure you are informed in your procedures, your options and discusses your questions and concerns at great length. Together you come up with an anesthesia and surgical solution that is comfortable for you and solves your problem. Dr. Chun is very careful to support you in any way if you have reservations about going under anesthesia, offer you alternatives, and keep you comfortable during your procedure. He follows up personally the night of your treatment by telephone, and responds immediately with phone calls back or appointments if you have follow up questions or concerns. My dentist sent me to see Dr. Chun because I fractured a tooth which had to be removed. I was in pain and Dr. Chun was able to get me in right away. Everything went great. Dr. Chun and his staff were very professional, friendly and made me feel at ease. After the tooth was pulled, I had minimal discomfort. That first evening, Dr. Chun called me to make sure everything was ok. About six days later, I went back for the follow-up and my mouth is recovering with no problems. Dr. Chun is a skilled Oral Surgeon. I went to him for a tooth extraction, which was quick & pain free. Dr. Chun even called me later that evening to see how I was doing. The only reason I didn't give this business 5 stars is because the receptionist mis-calculated my portion of the payment. When I received the detailed invoice from my insurance company, I realized I had over paid & contacted the office for a partial refund. I was told that they could see the insurance payment, but they had not received it yet. I was advised that once the insurance payment is received, a check would be issued to me for the overpayment. When I hadn't received my refund three weeks later, I contacted the office again. This time I was told that they received the insurance payment & they would issue a refund to me "when they get a chance". It has been a week since my second call & I have still not received a refund. Keep in mind, they won't perform any work on you until you pay in advance, however they don't seem concerned about issuing a refund when it is due. A similar thing happened at my general dentist's office. I called that office when I got the detailed insurance invoice, and I received a refund in three days! read more
