We booked Liquid Alaska Tours for our canoe experience as there were very little excursions available since we booked so last minute. We booked through Tripadvisor and the cost for the canoe for each person was about $230 each (pricey, I know). We were pretty bummed when we found out that our tour didn't include getting off the canoe to get up close to the glacier, especially since the price was quite steep. The photos on Tripadvisor and Viator show that the people do in fact get off the boat, but apparently it was incorrect (false advertisement imo). What I will say was the saving grace was the fact the scenery of this canoe ride was epic. There's a lot that can't be seen unless you take a helicopter, seaplane, kayak, or canoe up close to the Mendenhall Glacier. Our tour guide, Dawson was also great. He was full of dad jokes throughout the whole canoe ride. P.S. Don't think you're gonna get off this easy! The canoe ride was an exercise to say the least! My arms were sore the next day! read more

Matt was incredible. We only had 5 people on our canoe and it was very relaxing and fun. Matt's very knowledgeable on everything and is easy to chat with. I wish we had spent a little more time at the glacier and less at the waterfall. Perhaps we had to rush back since we only had 5 people on the canoe so it took us longer than average to canoe out there and back (1 kid, 4 adults). Took about 30 minutes each way and spent probably around 4-5 minutes at the glacier probably 2-3 minute...spent most of the time canoeing. We took breaks at places where there wasn't much of a scene. Romeo the wolf was a great story that was shared and wish that was told to us prior the end of the canoe trip so we could've really taken it in more! read more

We had the best time! A small group experience (there were 3 of us total in the group). Sophie and Molly were our guides and were very knowledgeable, funny and so nice. We had a great paddle and little hike even taking some time to look for gold, pyrite, and garland in the rocks. we got as close to the glacier as was safe. it is so sad that it is receding so quickly, but we are grateful we were able to see it while it is still around to see. Sophie and Molly also gave us great recommendations for restaurants, bars, hikes, and other things to do around Juneau. This tour company is small, local and does not have any affiliation with any of the cruise lines making it perfect for the personalized experience you are looking for. This is the best excursion that we have been taken during our docked at Juneau, Alaska. Our guide, Ben and Casey (?) are super easy going, friendly, knowledgable. We are prepared thoroughly from the beginning. Ben told us what to expect and what might we encounter during our trek. They brought us to the site where rain jackets, waterproof pants, boots and dry sacks were provided. Inside the dry sack were bottle water and few snacks. Both guides shown us how to do a basic canoeing. We never feel unsafe and or uncomfortable. We canoed to the terminus site of the glacier and hiked to the glacier itself. The whole trip was memorable. Sceneries were awesome, almost out of this world. It is sad to see the glacier has been melting on a faster rate that it can regenerate. We need to do something for our own climate to safe all of these precious glaciers. Bring hat and sunglasses. This is highly recommended excursion for anyone. read more

Went on the ice adventure to Mendenhall Glacier, and it was possibly the best excursion we've been on. Our tour guides, Spencer and Ben, were both super easy to talk to and knowledgeable. Even though we're not particularly outdoorsy, we never felt uncomfortable, whether paddling out to the glacier or hiking atop it. Plus, included in the excursion were waterproof boots, pants, and a coat shell, plus water and snacks. It's so well planned, you literally don't need to bring a thing. The glacier itself was spectacular. The sheer enormity! The colors! The only drawback to hiking the glacier was the fact that cruising Glacier Bay the following day wasn't as cool, since we'd already gotten up close and personal with Mendenhall. Finally, I'd be remiss if I didn't mention the workout. No need to go to the gym this day. Paddling five miles, much of it against the wind, and hiking uphill on ice, whipped pretty much all of our fellow guests. My wife and I aren't in super shape or anything, and this pushed us -- in a good way. Put differently, it's definitely doable if you're able-bodied and young, but don't expect to cruise through it. read more

The Mendenhall Glacier canoe and hike was the highlight of my Alaska trip. The tour guides, Ben and Spencer, were knowledgeable, friendly, and helpful. They provide almost all of the gear- rain boots, waterproof pants, rain jacket, hiking poles, crampons, water, waterproof sack, snacks, etc. you might want to bring sunglasses and a hat. The views were spectacular. I am not outdoorsy and had a fantastic time. We had a great group and worked together. It was a workout to paddle about 5 miles on a windy day in addition to a short glacier hike but it was definitely worth the time and money. read more

I'm writing this review just to give folks a heads-up that as of July 2022 you still pay a premium for this tour but do not actually get to go on the glacier at all. Mostly, it's all about rowing out across the lake and back. Once at the foot of the glacier, there was a very short walk across solid earth to gaze over at the glacier for a few minutes before turning around and heading back. Our young guides were perfectly fine - pleasant and friendly - but the experience was not worth the high price tag. You can see the glacier well enough from the Mendenhall visitor center, especially with a pair of binoculars. If you're going to go on one excursion to a glacier, I'd recommend the boat tour out to the Tracy Fjord instead. It was a lot less costly, especially for a family, and we saw significantly more wildlife. read more

We recently did a row/ glacier hike with Abby and Ben two weeks ago. They were such great guides and made the whole experience that much more fun! From the minute you're picked to the minute you're dropped off we had the best time and we learned so much from them. I had booked this tour more than a month ahead of our cruise. And was constantly in touch to make sure this tour will be happening. When we disembarked in Juneau, we looked for the Liquid Alaska Tour representative -- and it was not easy to find him. Whom we found was a very young tourguide who made a quick call and told us that the tour is cancelled. We were totally caught by surprise as we only had this one tour booked for the day. We were in Juneau for 8 hours from 2pm to 10pm with nothing else to do and nowhere to go except the town. To top it all, in preparation for this tour, we were reminded to layer up to keep us warm -- and we did -- and by mid day, we were sweating as it was a sunny day in Juneau. We had to undress at least 2 layers and carried all our bulky clothing throughout the whole day -- for nothing!! I never received a phone call nor an email from Liquid Alaska Tour to apologize for the incident. Any decent person would have at least reached out. They let the young fellow face the brunt of our anger and disappointment. Cowards and irresponsible people are running this company. They should be banned from Viator and Tripadvisor. they do not deserve their ratings when they do not even have the decency to be respectful of their customers! Our guess is that they cancelled because they did not have enough people going to this tour as there were only 3 of us who checked in. Such a shameless company! Such a failure! The Mendenhall Glacier Ice Adventure is a fantastic tour! Highly recommend! I was a little apprehensive before the tour because I am not the most coordinated or fit person, but our guides Ryan and Casey made the experience great for everyone. We were picked up in Juneau and shuttled out to Mendenhall Lake to be outfitted with all the requisite attire. They handed out rain pants, boots, and jackets before we got on the lake. The ~2.5 mile canoe out to the glacier was work, but definitely doable since everyone is rowing together. Once we arrived, they handed out micro-spikes to put on over our boots and we began walking around on the glacier. You definitely have to have good balance and an ability to walk on uneven ground, but I never felt rushed or worried because we took it at an easy pace. Both Ryan and Casey were extremely knowledgeable about animals and vegetation in the area and were able to answer any questions about the glacier and the surrounding area. They were fantastic leaders, they made sure no one felt alone or left behind, and as a bonus were funny and great photographers. It was an amazing and unforgettable experience. read more

We did the Mendenhall Glacier canoe trip. Our guide was easy to find when we left the cruise ship and provided all the transportation and equipment out to the lake. We were provided with snacks and top of the line rain gear to keep us comfortable. Our guide, Abby, was caring and considerate and gave excellent narration during our ride. The Liquid Alaska Tours' Mendenhall Glacier Ice Adventure Tour was an amazing experience, an absolute favorite from our trip. We couldn't have asked for better guides than Spencer and Casey. We were outfitted in our gear in comfortable setting and then it was off to the canoe. I've had some kayaking experience so the canoe ride, comparatively, was not a difficult paddle and was completely manageable for the paddling novices on the trip, especially with instruction from our guides. It was breathtaking to round an outcropping and the glacier come into view. The guides were a font of information and stories on the way, and made sure to point out aspects of the area, thus making the trip even more enjoyable. After a very short walk on the rocky path, and attaching our crampons, we were able to access the glacier and visit several different spots and features of the site. The trek was navigable for all and absolutely spectacular. We had a nice amount of time, no rush. The paddle back seemed to go even faster and we were given hot beverages as we peeled off the gear and got ready for the ride back. Truly a great excursion and an amazing memory from our adventures. read more

This was to be on of the high points of our trip to Alaska, but it did not happen. We were going to paddle out to the glacier in the afternoon. The guides meet us in town ~1pm. They informed us that the lake had white-capped waves and there was a strong wind blowing down off the glacier, and that would make it very difficult to paddle and that they were very sorry, but they would have to cancel the trip. We quickly booked a bus trip out to Mendenhall and where there by about 1:45. When we got there we found no white-capped waves on the lake, and there was little wind. We spent about 2 hrs at the park. We walked around and found the lake was basically calm and there was little in the way on wind or waves. Also, while we were there we saw other canoes on the lake going out to the glacier. Not 100% sure what happened, but it clear that they were not being completely honest with us. There a number of tour operators that paddle out the glacier, I suggest that you do not choose Liquid Alaska Tours for your trip. read more
