What seems to be the problem at the Chantilly store with it's continual scarcity of stock. I like Aldi products but am fed up with it's continually empty shelves of items I purchase on a regular basis. I went there today to get 3 things, only 1 of which was in stock... which has been the norm lately. No Appleton Farms Gourmet Thick Sliced Applewood Smoked Bacon, No Boardwalk style Crab cakes, and for the 3rd item...Oatmeal Cranberry Cookies- I literally bought the last 2 on the shelf. What is going on with Aldi Chantilly? I went to this Aldi branch and I was totally shocked! It is dirty, produce are so so quality, shelves are poorly organized and resemble a thrift store or yard sale with items just thrown/strewn together, especially their specialty household items section which is now just one big messy piles! A gallon of milk that started at about $1.50 is twice that price! Can't find items that used to be well stocked! After I grabbed a pack of chicken breast, sadly left immediately - it was the worst grocery shopping experience! What happened to the Aldi we love? Staffing issue? Management? There seems to be no one charge, or care about giving its loyal customers a great shopping experience. I am taking my business at Lidl Herndon and Trader Joe's Reston....for now. read more

Their prices are extremely competitive. It's a smart policy. They have less employees, but the kind folks here are hard working. Smart bet is get here early. Aldi all locations can be quite busy. As of my visit today, cashier for cash purchases only, and looks like 8 self check out lanes. No cashiers except cash only less than 10 items. I watched as 1 poor mom was wrestling a baby and counting her items. I left my cart at the line and walked out. Lower prices are not worth that hassle. I went to Walmart. So Aldi can really come in handy when I'm doing groceries for my family reunions, which happen in nearby Manassas. I'm glad that there's a nice cheap shopping option here. Not the most well stocked Aldi I've been to, though. Long lines, almost every time I've been in here. But good products, excellent prices, decently friendly cashiers, and probably my fave non-International (as in not Global or H Mart or Lotte) grocery store in the entire region. read more

This is a new Aldi so it has self checkout option. I'm new to Aldi but my mom has always raved an out the great prices. Our bill was only $70 which was far cheaper than I've seen since the 2020 election and all the inflation we have had the past few years. The prices are great here especially for Irish cheese and eggs. Some of the selections are missing such as meats but for the value I don't mind going to another place to get the things Aldi doesn't carry. read more

In my opinion, the best Aldi in the area. Well managed, helpful staff. Excellent products. Must check packaged vegetables and salads. Meat well priced. Few things you need to know before you walk in to Aldi with a shopping list and a gleam in your eye: They are a discount retailer, and some of the things they use to keep costs low are minimal staff, no services like bagging, a quarter deposit to use shopping carts (so they don't have to pay for corrals or to have someone go gather them up), and no bags. On that last note, bring bags, or be prepared to buy theirs (even the disposable kind), or hope that you can scrounge some boxes up in the store. Now, on with the sexy review: If you aren't familiar with Aldi, it's a discount supermarket owned by the same family that owns Trader Joe's. Like Trader Joe's, the bulk of their products are brands made specifically for the company (Chef's Cupboard, Fit & Active, Bon Italia, etc.). There are some name brands (Coke, Little Debbie, Gatorade) you can find most of the time, but even the store brands are - for the most part - made by the big-brand companies. The hummus at Aldi is the same as the hummus at Trader Joe's which - guess what? - is made by Sabra. There are lots of name brand items sold under the house label to keep quality up and costs down. You can also find lots of odds and ends that pop up from time to time; food dehydrators, blankets, toys, storage bins, and more. I got a cast iron griddle there a while back and it has served me well for a long time. I also got some baby proofing/safety items and tub toys. The biggest complaints with Aldi are usually the condition of the store and the lack of employees. The store can definitely look a little ransacked and chaotic, and lines can get a little backed up, but I've never seen anything I would describe as "gross" or unsafe, and I've always seen checkers call for backup when lines get a little too long. Just remember, skeleton crews is a big chunk of how they keep the costs down. The (limited) produce section is hit or miss; you can find a squash or bananas that are beautiful, but the bell peppers are wrinkly and the avocados are so unripe they'll be impossible to eat for days.It's definitely a good place to stock up on the easy stuff and basics, like baby carrots, bagged salads and greens, onions, potatoes, and stuff like that. And don't expect to find any dragon fruit or heirloom tomatoes. The bagged apples tend to be a little banged up, so keep that in mind. Lastly, I think my main complaint is the practice of cart-swapping they use at checkout. Basically, you put all your items on the conveyor belt, they check but don't bag, and put your items into an empty cart that they have there. Then you take that cart and they take your now empty cart and use it for the next person. In theory, this is a good idea, but when you have a kid or kids in the cart, shuffling them out is a huge pain in the ass, especially as you're trying to pay. The notion has been proposed on a couple of occasions that I push my cart through to the end and the checker just put my purchases into the cart with the boys, but the thought of altering the status quo seemed to terrify the cashiers, so now I just move the kids around. read more

Even better, they're on Instacart and even with the higher prices on the app, they are still less expensive than Giant , Wegmans, etc. They are only missing a star as they don't have everything that I need at times. A trip to Aldi can be a humbling experience. But if you think of it as a video game (Feed My Family 4: Fight 2 Survive a High Cost of Living) it can be kind of fun. You pay a quarter to get your cart. Relax! You get it back if you return your cart like a civilized human. Bring your own bags, or pay 10 cents to get one of their bags. With prices this low, you can afford it! The prices! Amazing! 2.89 for wine! This is the first time I've ever seen anything below $3. (For the record--I haven't tried it yet.) I got a bag of spinach for under a dollar and I've been eating it all week. We got pomegranates for 79 cents! They also have great little prepackaged salads and mezze platters, also very cheap. They don't have any bougie veggies, though. We wanted leeks but we were out of luck. (Who did we think we were?!) Where is draw the line is meat/seafood. Unsure of the quality. However, we did find some decent chicken and it was good. We even found a great Tikka Masala sauce to simmer it in! That was a little unexpected. I'm not a fan of shopping out of boxes. This place reminds me of the Shoppers Food Warehouse that was in this location before Aldi. This place makes me feel "snotty" because I walk around and I'm turned off my the disorganized shelves, the bathmats in boxes right next to birdseed, which is right next to crackers. There is no logically way to shop for things. Do I look up or down for the prices? When I do find the item's price tag it is usually not near the item. Everything is so sloppy. The prices are cheap but all I can think about is, "it's cheap for a reason". Do I want to serve this to my family? They have started accepting credit cards, so I guess there's that.. So I'll just say it, I really do love Aldi. This is a brand new Aldi, and I was there for the grand opening on 12/14 and have been back twice since. This particular store is well stocked and the cashiers seem well trained and are quick to move the lines. The product assortment is really good, and the quality of the merchandise is pretty good given the price. This isn't a full service grocery store, but they have 95% of what you would ever need. The produce is also reasonably fresh. I've been shopping at Aldi for years, both when I lived in Germany and when I was a broke college student. You have to set your expectations at Aldi. No, this is not gourmet store or a Wegman's shopping experience but you also aren't paying nearly as much. For those who have never been to an Aldi, remember to bring cash, or a debit card and bring your own bags if you don't want to buy them. You also need to use a quarter to get a shopping cart, that you get back when you return the cart. They do this so they don't have to have an employee waste time to chase down rogue shopping carts in the parking lot. read more

I know I was intimidated the first time I went to Aldi and like most I came unprepared. I didn't come with my own bags and didn't want to purchase them there. Now when I come here I come with a plan! TIPS: -BYOB: Bring your own bag, they have bags here but you have to pay for each bag it makes much more sense to bring your own. I purchased two large bags Earthwise brand they got a lot of groceries and have a cardboard style bottom that is collapsible. I got them for around $12 for two on Amazon. -You need a quarter to use the carts. Honestly I don't even bother with a cart anymore because the whole quarter thing is a hassle. However I would say if you are cooking for more than one or two people get a cart and maybe more than 2 bags. -Aldi doesn't take coupons but look out for the weekly deals to find STEALS! -Cheapest place to get milk, eggs, most produce, spices, gourmet cheeses and pantry staples, I've also been getting their bulk chicken and bulk beef. -I swear every time I shop here I save 20-30 dollars more than I would have on the same things at Safeway or Giant. -Although it may be a little inconvenient to shop here at first you get amazing deals and the same quality as most grocery stores. -They have really cheap wine too however, I cannot attest to the taste because I haven't tried it yet! Good store with excellent prices, but much different than any other grocery store I have ever been in. Not used to having to bring my own bags or buy new ones. Not used to having to rent a shopping cart. Not used to seeing no name brands or products that aren't familiar to me. For some products it doesn't matter, but for some it does. I do part of my shopping at Aldi because the prices and how much you get, just can't be beat at any local store. I was a little nervous to try their meats not knowing how long it might have been sitting in the case. But boy was I ever wrong! The pork tenderloin was delicious and plenty fresh and the top sirloin steak looks just fine, waiting in my freezer to be cooked. Their produce was fantastic and kept for longer than some of the more expensive local grocery stores. Though this store isn't in an area that I frequent, it is so worth going out of my way to get products here because of the price savings. If you walk into Aldi expecting a "normal" supermarket like Giant, Teeter, Safeway, etc., you'll be turned off QUICK, and vow never to go back. Yes, you have to rent the grocery cart. It's no accident that you don't see people all over, or brand names everywhere, or need to bring bags, or do a cart deposit. $2.99 for dark chocolate sea salt caramels? 65 cents for greek yogurt? 60 cents for a seedless cucumber? 99 cents for 6 pk English muffins? Whaaaat?!?! And it's good, folks. It's all good! Half of these reviews are whack! First ...yes you do have to "pay" 25¢ for the cart ... which you get back when you return it to the cart rack. So that makes it free, right? And those bags that you have to buy are the awesome, heavy duty ones that are completely reuseable. Not the normal thin grocery store ones I usually get 10 bags, even if I don't use them all to pack my groceries. They are cute, too. As for the food quality.... I would say "ok" to "excellent". Try it, if you don't like it, don't buy it again. More likely than not, it will be acceptable to your palate. Just remember, this is a discount place. Most of the brands are not found at other stores. But once you take it out the container, you can rarely tell the difference. This place is great for people who are not brand-loyal. I always get the eggs, which are less than a dollar. I also like the Lebanon Bologna and the fake Mintos, which are 3 packs for a dollar. I also like to check out the non-grocery deals. As a german immigrant I go to Aldi for their German and European products (Aldi is a german supermarket chain) and because of their low prices. I love their chocolates, their wines, some of their cheese specialties, their organic stuff and get so happy when they have German Week every now and then. PLUS at Aldi, you can cut your grocery bill literally into half thanks to their awesome low prices! Around Thanksgiving time they start to sell ORIGINAL German spiced Christmas wine "Glühewein" which you drink hot (in Germany they sell those at Christmas Markets - it's like mulled wine.), as well as all kinds of awesome authentic german christmas goods like chocolates, cookies and ginger breads. The same stuff as they sell at the international section at World Market, just Aldi brand and half the price!! LOVE LOVE LOVE that so much since it makes me happy to get my hands on all those things without having to pay outrageous prices as I would at World Market !!! I used to live in the Fair Lakes Area and I, as well as all the other Germans I knew there, was literally doing the happy dance when this store opened up, because I then had my beloved ALDI next door. How such small things make such a big difference! This is truly a good store. Yes, you need 25 cents for the cart - they do that so you return it. Yes, the grocery bags cost 5 cents or so, but you want to stop wasting plastic bags anyways right? Remember the environment? And yes, they do not take Credit Card, but they do take Debit and Cash. ALL that saves you money and won't be added onto the grocery prices. But it's seriously no big of a deal. At least not to me. I'd rather "work" a bit (if you can call 'returning a cart myself' work) and save BIG. It's cool with me. This store itself is clean, organized and in a convenient shopping location. The staff is always friendly and super fast at check-out. I am a very clean and tidy person and very sensitive about messy stores. I would not shop here if it wasn't clean and well organized (I am extremely german after all). We do our bulk and stocking-up shopping here all the time. What we buy and save on a lot are things like the following (just for some examples and to show what we love to get here): - Fruits & Veggies - Organic Snacks - Nuts - Organic Granola - Salad Dressings - Coconut Oil - Almond Milk - Greek Yoghurt - Kefir - Green Juices - German Chocolates and Dark Chocolates - Wines (the german Riesling is awesome!) - natural Juices - Coffee - Cheeses & Gourmet Cheeses - Lunch Meats & Deli Meats - Organic Grass Fed Beef - Olive Oils and other European Oils - Granola Bars - Organic Cane Sugar - 12 Grain Bread - Whole Grain Pastas (they even have 'Rice Spagettis') ... and some more other things that I can't think of right now. And again - I love the Special Weeks like 'Deutsche Woche' or 'Spanish' and 'Italian Week'. I usually stock up on the european items and even bought a freezer for that. ;) I'm hoping for more Aldi stores across the area. Especially Reston or Herndon. Again.... If you go there, don't expect the all American Walmart or Safeway experience and brands. It's a simple store and they keep it simple, so you don't have to pay the usual high prices. My husband and I stopped here because I had never gone to an Aldi before and it just opened. I didn't realize how terrible these stores are. The quality is terrible. It is literally like doing all your grocery shopping at the dollar store. I guess if that's the kind of shopping you like, then Aldi is the place for you. The inside of this store smells like rotting food, and it seemed kind of dirty. They just opened up! It should be clean at all time, especially when you first open!!! I actually really like this store! The first couple of times I came here, I thought it was super ghetto in that there were a lot of fake knock off brands, but I don't tend to buy any packaged/processed foods from here anyway. It's all about the PRODUCE for me! You can get really good prices, especially on the organic lettuces. I've bought oranges, watermelon, peppers, cucumbers you name it. If it looks fresh, get it, if it doesn't don't! It's just like any other grocery store, produce isn't always fresh. They have great prices on milk, eggs, and bread. I have never had a bad experience with the cashiers, who have always been helpful and friendly. You must bring your own bags, and bring a quarter for the cart, but that's how they are able to provide such low costs. The garlic bean tortilla chips in the first aisle on the right are soo good! Avocados here are always so cheap at around 99 cents or sometimes 89 cents! Everything is a good deal :) much cheaper than your local teeter or giant. read more

First things first: MAKE SURE TO BRING A QUARTER FOR THE SHOPPING CART AND SOME BAGS TO CARRY YOUR GROCERIES AS THEY WON'T BE PROVIDING ANY FOR FREE(their grocery bags can be purchased in store for 11 cents each) Now for the review, I've visited several times as I live nearby and the prices are unbeatable. Best part about this place is of course the inexpensive price on decent products, three stars for that solid reason, but anything else, I have no stars to give. Cashiers and workers are often moody and it's hard to know the prices of things on the spot as items are often misplaced. Now to get into why I give no other star that doesn't base on the price, I'd like to talk about my first visit experience, and one thing for sure, this place is not a first-visit-friendly kind of place. On my first visit, my mom and I brought only the card, since that's what we do when we go grocery shopping, only to realize that they have carts that require 25 cents on the spot, so we walked around, putting as much things on our own arms as possible, when we asked one of the worker on where one of the product was, with very tiring look and bothered gesturing(as if we weren't supposed to ask any) he told us where it was. And after some struggles of trying to dig through to find products and pick them up with full arms, we reached the line for check-out. As my mom and I both have a long cashiering experience, we were impressed that the cashiers were able to sit down to work, but sadly, they seemed more tired than other cashiers in the area for some reason(we were guessing unorganized work environment and stressed managers for the reason). Then we were secondly surprised that they don't provide bags, so after we were done paying, we had to additionally buy the bags with our card, cashier(mid-aged white woman) was extremely annoyed with this, she groaned loudly, frowned, and mumbled things like "Seriously?" and "You got to be kidding me." When we mentioned that we only had a card with us. Now we understand that the line was quite long and as a company, it'd be annoying that they will be paying more than the profit from this purchase as it was on card, but honestly, as a formal cashier, I'd have just payed that 22 cents for the customer, or for the very least not groan in the face of their customers. I also highly doubt that she, OR the company would be seriously effected for that one transaction, not to mention that it wasn't our fault that they've failed to hire more cashiers to shorten the line. We tried to understand guessing that she had a very tough day, but I still think that it was highly unprofessional of her to release that stress towards the customers. Wouldn't say that the impression of several other visits after that was much different, unspoken rule would be don't ask/talk, don't make mistakes, buy things and go. Aldi rocks - its owned by the same peeps as Trader Joes, so you get the same quality without the crazy pricing of normal grocery stores - there are tons of these stores in Europe and the expectation should be that for the rock bottom prices, you will be getting no frills service, a quarter deposit to use a cart and you bag your own groceries. Its not a pretty store by any means and its not supposed to be, if you want that go to Wegmans or Harris Teeter and pay more. Alot of products are from Germany (chocolate, coffee) Italy(pastas, sauces) and the US(all the brand name equivalent cereals and junk food you would normally find). The frozen section has some amazing deals(cornish game hens for $2.50 each, 4 pack wild caught salmon filets for $4.49) Weekly deals are also a win - broccoli or cauliflower for a buck. A BUCK! My husband decided to go to the Chantilly, VA store as his mom, who lives in Ohio. Loves Aldi. There was only 1 cashier working at 4:00 in the afternoon. He was in a line of 3 when the cashier told them that the other cashier was on her way so she told them to move over to the next register. So he and the another person went over to the next register; as they were given the impression that the original cashier was leaving and the other one was on her way. The new cashier never showed up and the original cashier waited on at least 12 more people while my husband waited as the other cashier kept saying she is on her way. My husband only had 2 items that he wanted to purchase. He ultimately after waiting about 15 minutes without purchasing the items. We will NEVER go back to his place again. Also, has anyone ever tried to reach them via phone. They DO NOT list any store phone numbers. I had to really dig to find a number for their corporate office, not a Toll free number. Aldi rocks. We had a German au pair who introduced me to them as I had heard of them but never been in one. We stopped at one when we were traveling and she gave me an introduction. 1. Aldi and trader joes is owned by the same ppl 2. Aldi (mostly) carries its own brand of products but they are mostly equivalent to the name brand items. 3. Produce -at this store especially- is great. Huge selection and super cheap. 4. Butter, milk and cheeses are also great. 5. Bring a quarter and your own bags. If you don't have a quarter, I have gone in and asked for a loaner from the cashier, they have helped me out in a pinch. Bottom line, you may need to stop at another store for a specialized product or your specific name brand but Aldi is great to stock up for a good price. My favorite place to get the bulk of my shopping done. We started shopping at ALDI while we lived in Germany and love the quality and prices. It also got us into the habit of taking our own shopping bags. There produce specials can not be beaten. Good selection of dairy and frozen too. I like that there is no intrusive music playing. They are basically dollar store no name brands with low quality. I just stopped in for some juice and a bakery items and I just tried to find some brands I've heard of. I went on a Thursday night and there were about 10 people waiting in line with a cart full of items with 2 cashiers available, while I had about 3 items. I was annoyed, I wanted to get out of there. With such big movements since my last review I thought I'd provide an update (though please take the time to read my previous)... as of March 2016 Aldi has banned 8 pesticides from their shelves: deltamethrin, chlorpyrifos, clothianidin, cypermethrin, imidacloprid, thiamethoxam, sulfoxaflor & fipronil. Can you even pronounce them? I can't. Their also known as the neonicotinocide class of pesticides, deadly to bees & applied to our fruits & veggies. Aldi is the first US grocer to take a stand, even when the Dept. of Agriculture & EPA has yet to set regulations on these pesticides despite the high rate of bee colony collapses over recent years. Bee pollination has a direct impact on our food chain supply & the lack of regulation on our foods as a whole in the US is quite scary, but for the sake of staying focused on this review I'll just say knowledge is power... & I'm thankful for this German based grocer! An additional change worth a mention is that Aldi has also removed artificial growth hormones from their entire dairy line, not just their milk. These changes with their on going business practices makes for healthier customers, communities & environment. Speaking of Aldi's business practices, shopping here is certainly a give n' take & not for everyone. Yes, there is a quarter deposit for shopping carts & the way I look at it the extra 60 steps it takes me to return it is a benefit to my health. The cost to purchase bags at the check out encourages me to bring my own, thus cutting down on waste (or energy if recycled). As for presentation, items are displayed in their shipping cartons identical to wholesalers such as Costco, something I'm already use to. The skeletal crew (usually 3-4 employees) I find is efficient enough for the trade off in what I get in cost savings. Though I will say this particular location does seem to struggle on straightening their seasonal section, unlike the other locations I've frequented. However, it's also the seasonal isle where you'll find not regularly stocked, fun items such as quinoa chocolate chip cookie mix, organic super grains, exotic vegetable chips & most recently I found coconut oil cooking spray to name a few. A grocery store that carrys some German food products you can`t find in other common grocery stores. Also, they have good prices on produce. I did not give it a 5 star because you have to pay a quarter to get a cart and bring your own bags. read more
