So, take all of this with a grain of salt since I'm a total noob at this. Through Creme de la Crop though, I experienced my initiation. The way that it works is at the beginning of the season (in our case late spring) you enroll into the share program signing up for either a Standard Market - selection of basic farm produce - or "Epicurean" - larger amounts of every fruit and vegetable they grow. Paying a flat fee (2014 Standard full $720/half $360) you then weekly receive their finest summer produce for 18 weeks. Simply pick up your weekly take of assorted veggies at one of the designated locations. Easy peasy. The upside: The quality of the produce was crazy good. This wasn't your standard supermarket fare--not by a long shot. Everything we received over the 18 weeks was organic, grown on their farm, and from taste, touch, sight, and smell absolutely phenomenal. Green beans, peppers, lettuce, carrots, eggplant, cucumbers as well as various herbs...and much more. We were rarely disappointed with what we got. The people and actual farm were also part of the experience. Most of their produce is grown right there along US 30 just west of town. The actual farm leaves little to be desired. It's basically a collection of rundown old buildings and a few muddy fields. But, the staff and volunteers running it are amazing. They manage to create a unique atmosphere of education and community that really draws you in. They are helpful, friendly, and passionate about their work. The downside: As much as it pains me to say it, it just isn't practical or economical. First off, what produce you get any given week depends entirely on what they are harvesting. One week you get crap load of beets and then next you're swimming in beans. If there are veggies you eat regularly, you'll probably find yourself looking elsewhere many weeks. You also frequently are trying to figure out creative ways to use up the unique produce you end up with. Edemame, chard, kale are interesting, just not the most useful. Second, it's expensive. Some may argue that the quality as well as the environmental sustainability are worth the extra cost, but it was hard for me to swallow. There are other ways to procure organic produce without overly burdening the budget. Finally, there's also the convenience factor to consider. Creme de la Crop does a lot to make it easy to get your hands on your weekly allotment with multiple pick-up locations around Valpo. But, you still work around their schedule and accessibility. In the end it's worth it if you're really committed to CSA. Having principles costs money. If you're willing to pay the cost, a CSA is an excellent way to get great fruits and vegetables and support environmentally sustainable agriculture. If not, find yourself a Whole Foods somewhere.

We found that Remus Farms was open and on our route home to Chicago, so that is why we stopped. Upon arriving, we saw that they have been open since 1932, and we love to see a business survive for so long. Outside there were huge bins of pumpkins, squash and gourds. It had been extremely cold the week before, so they had all froze. And sadly, now that they were thawed, they were soft and moldy. They should have been tossed instead of left out for customer to see. Inside, there was a huge area of produce, baked goods, jams, jellies, salsas and other farmer's market canned products. In another room, they had evergreen boughs that they were making into wreaths, swags, and grave blankets. Since we visited during December, we assumed that most of the produce came from somewhere else, and was not "farm fresh." But everything looked okay. There was a plentiful array of canned goods, but all of them had a layer of dust, and looked like they had been sitting undisturbed for a long time. Most of products still had a good expiration date, but the dust did not make them look appetizing. If I recall, the retail area has a dirt floor, and that may account for the dust. But they should have their employees use a feather duster to keep the cans clean. There were plenty of baked goods, too--pies, breads, muffins, etc. But a lot of them looked like they had been sitting for awhile, and without an expiration date, they looked suspect. We took a pass. We did find a big, lovely evergreen swag for $20, and we bought a bag full of small gourds that were priced at $1 apiece. We also bought off Remus-branded cherry salsa, and it was really delicious. I cannot comment on the nursery area because most of it was closed for the winter. I applaud Remus for being open for over 90 years, and there are a lot of good things to say about this place, but they would do well to tidy up. I am sure that it would help their business, and make their product more appealing to their customers.

YMCA Field Trip with 4-6 year olds -- 7/10 County Line…read moreOrchard We went on a field trip with our local YMCA. Process was simple: wristbands, then separate lines for each instructor. You rotate through sections about bees, apples, and how they are processed. For 4-5-6 year olds it was easy to follow and they understood it. Then you load the trams to go pick. That's when they told us on the tram that we would NOT be picking directly off the trees -- we'd be picking out of a large skid box. They said it was due to early/late frost and bees not being able to pollinate, plus a very wet spring/summer. They should have notified us beforehand. The kids were expecting to pick off the tree, and it was disappointing to find out once we were already on the tram. After the tram ride back you can roam as long as you want. We went to the animals first -- you can't feed them and there wasn't anyone there explaining, so it's self-explanatory. We did the little motor trike bike track, which the kids enjoyed. We ate in The Kitchen. Good selection for kids. Prices were a little high but not too bad. You order, get a number, and wait in line -- it gets really packed and could use a better system, but the cooks and cashiers were doing their best. There's a nice table of samples -- chutney, mustard, aiolis and other things they sell. Gift shop area has honey, coffee, canned goods, candles, pumpkins, and a toy area (we tried to keep the kids away from that one!). Prices felt high compared to the other 5-6 orchards/pumpkin farms we've been to around here -- only one further south is more reasonable. Kids had fun. We hadn't been in about 3 years. Would we go back? Maybe -- it's questionable for us because there are cheaper, more hands-on options for little kids nearby.

Good to Go is a small deli and tasting emporium that has a good selection of Boar's Head deli meats, cheeses, and a plethora of different olive oils. They also have pre-prepared offerings from their restaurant and wine too. They make prepackaged lunches daily with different gourmet sandwiches on fantastic breads with their boars head meats. In the boxed lunches is a sandwich (I've had a few of their offerings so far - Pastrami with red onions, Honey turkey with apples and pear vinaigrette), a small portion of pasta salad, and a desert. The sandwiches are great, the pasta salad is fresh and delicious, and the deserts are excellent. I came here for the grand opening after I had their lunches and got to sample a lot of their different offerings and wine. They had a balsamic vinaigrette with dark chocolate in it that was to die for. I sampled a lot of their wines as well and wound up buying 4 bottles! I'd really recommend this place everyone, you have to try something they have to offer. They'll let you sample all of the deli meats, cheeses, olive oils, anything.
