Aldi's is my go to right now. You can get cheaper fruits and dairy products and nuts here compared to other grocery stores, just remember to bring your own bag. read more

Located off of a busy road in Union, the first thing you'll notice is that you have to pay $0.25 to get a cart. I think this makes sense because you get the deposit back after you return the cart to the right place. Inside you walk in and there's a long aisle filled with some non-perishable food stuffs including Oreos but mostly generic or third party brands, and then it opens to a few produce and freezer / meat aisles. They do run out of stock for the popular items, so come back in the morning once they've restocked but keep in mind that a lot of things may not have a large quantity. Prices are around the same price as the local shoprite, with some items a little more expensive or cheaper depending on what is on sale. So it makes sense to comparison shop if you have time. read more

Often stop in when working in the area. Have found prices here significantly lower on certain items at this location than in northern NJ locations! Can't figure that one out, but I take advantage of it! Unless you want to go high-end for your groceries, I can't imagine grocery shopping anywhere other than here, Lidl, and ShopRite! The selection of food was about average but the service I would give a 0/5 stars. This was my first and LAST time entering this Aldi. I have been to many ALDIs before and never had the experience I have had here. The employees are rude and disrespectful. I have never had such anxiety about shopping before and this store really gave that "first time for everything" with that. I am not familiar with the Aldi shopping "rules" and the staff were really good at making you feel bad for not knowing. Other news- I got home and my gelato container is smashed and I had to throw it out. This probably happened because the cashier threw everything in my cart and wouldn't even let me bag my own items. After this experience it won't bother me to spend the extra money to go to an another grocery store where the experience will be more pleasant. Love Aldi! Moved to Union a little over 2 yrs ago and started shopping here. Never had an issue with it not being stocked. Will not buy fruit and veggies anywhere else bc always regret it. When this Aldi opened up, it was better. I left here before COVID and now I am back and I can't explain how this store has notably gone to hell. I have been to the store twice in one week and by far it has been the worst shopping experience! During my first visit, the cashier was abrupt while loading my cart and never even looked my way or responded to my greeting. She was obviously flustered because the customers seemed confused about where they should form a line. I asked the cashier if there was one single line for both cashiers and in a patronizing manner, the cashier explained that if I saw three cashiers, that it meant that there should be three lines and if I saw two cashiers, that it then meant that there were two lines. She handed me my receipt and pretty much turned to the next customer rudely. Today, I encountered the same with the confusion of the lines and the cashiers were yelling at the customers. Again, there were two cashiers, and customers formed one line and the cashiers were yelling at the customers because they were not coming to the cashiers fast enough. I got that they wanted the customers to form a line for each cashier, but they were not expressing that. The cashiers seemed upset over this and if this is the case all day, then why not explain it, or place a sign stating that the customers should not form a single line? It seems like there are no rules, and especially no supervision. Today my entire experience with the cashier was met with major attitude. I finally make it to the cashier and again, the cashier did not greet me, nor did she respond to my greeting. I had placed some of my groceries in a small box as I looked for the plastic bar to separate my groceries from the customer ahead of me and did not see one. She told me to remove my groceries because she they needed to be placed on the counter and not in the box. I placed the contents on the counter from the box and said that I was just trying not to mix my groceries with the customer's. She then picks up a bar that was practically at the edge next to her and waves it at me in a taunting manner, then places it on the track. By this time her it was evident that she was very upset and without reason. I entered my car and I am waiting for her to tell me what my total was. I'm waiting for a few seconds and I don't see the total on the screen. I asked her what my total was and she scolded me for not inserting my credit card fast enough for the amount to flash on the screen. She threw her hands in the air as she raised her voice at me. I was taken aback by her behavior. What is it with Aldi's customer service? I will be writing to corporate about this. I checked my receipt and it asks if I'd like to explain how my experience at Aldi was, I also noted that her name is Tatiana. I have never been this humiliated as a customer before. I was truly embarrassed and will do my shopping elsewhere. Trader Joe's is way better or even Lidl. Please beware and don't shop at Aldi on Commerce Ave. in Union, NJ. read more

Always friendly and helpful staff - the exact opposite of Lidl. They run out of items but they do get stock in everyday. Sometimes you get free entrainment when waking in the guy with the accordian who plays Spanish Polka music in the lot is amazing! Maybe it's Bachata! read more

The Aldi on Commerce St. In Union, NJ has terrible employees. A cashier today literally threw most of my items in the cart damaging my produce. When I asked her to be more gentle, she said "if you don't like the way I do it, go shop somewhere else." The prices are great but I paid a high price for the disrespect. I had a very poor experience at this store today. I'm so disappointed so much so that I'd really like to call the corporate office and express my concerns but I know my phone call will go unanswered. I know this because I tried calling the corporate office about a year ago when I had a problem here and I couldn't get through to them so I know I definitely won't get through now. I really hope the superiors at ALDI monitor customer complaints so that improvements can be made. There is plenty of room for improvements; but I'm not going to hold my breath. My guess is that the employees at Union ALDI more then likely are not monitored nor counseled on their errors and lack of professionalism AND that's why they continue to be under achievers. I won't be recommending this location of ALDI anymore. Today as I was in Aldi, I did my food shopping as I usually do and went to stand in line. Pre-pandemic, you simply got online at one of the registers and wait. Most of the time the customers complain about the lines at Aldi. There could literally be 15 people on line waiting to check out and 2 registers open. Aldi is a small supermarket and they only have a total of 4 registers located in the front but usually just 2 are open so 15 people can build up pretty quickly. So I'm waiting in line in aisle #2. That's where generally the cashiers direct the customers to stand and wait in order to feed into one line. Sometimes I've been in Aldi and the cashiers have the customers wait in aisle #1 to feed into the line but this time it was aisle #2. The cashier looks up (I'll call him Cashier #2) at the customer in front of me and is telling her to go to aisle #1 to wait. It's difficult to understand what he's saying with his face mask on and I don't think she understood either. So she moves forward to get in his line and starts putting her food on the conveyor belt. At this point, he starts talking very loudly to me. He's telling me to go in aisle #1. Now aisle #1 had a line and I'm telling him I'm not moving. It didn't seem fair for me to abandon the line I was on, to go stand on line in aisle #1 only to move to the back of the line when I was already standing online in aisle #2 at the front of the line. A few minutes later and he's still yelling for me to go to aisle #1 so against my better judgement, I go to aisle #1 and I'm waiting. Soon enough I'm next in line but the line in aisle #2 (the line I just left) is still there and now cashier #3 comes out of nowhere and says "I'm open. I'll take the next customer" and the customer in aisle #2 rushes over while I'm still standing in line in aisle #3 even though I was supposed to be next. So at this point, I said to the cashier #3 " I was supposed to be next but I was told to go to aisle #1 by your cashier" Cashier #3 just says no that's wrong and proceeds to take the customer. I told Cashier #2 that everything is all mixed up there and that they (the employees) need to communicate with each other and come up with a plan to assist customers better so they are all on the same page. Before you know it, Cashier #2 and I are going at it. I mean he's yelling at me and I'm yelling at him and then I'm like "wait a minute! Stop yelling at me. I'm a customer" Crazy. Then I look at cashier #4 who walks up and I ask her for a manager to discuss the current confusion in the store and she tells me that she is a manager and to wait. Meanwhile she starts yelling at everyone in the store. She's pointing to the aisles and the cash registers telling everyone to move up and move over and wait. She's yelling loud! Social distancing has been in effect everywhere that I've gone since the peak of the pandemic but on this day...at ALDI in Union....there was no social distancing nor was there any organization, professionalism or a lick of common sense!!! I pulled out my phone pondering over whether or not to snap a pic as I watched a group of us customers literally piled on top of each other at the registers. Customers were yelling at the manager because they didn't like her tone of voice and I decide to put my phone and not take the pic, realizing I could be infringing on someone's personal space. I've been to quite a bit of places since this pandemic has creeped us on us. There's been quite a bit of rules and regulations put in place as a result to take safety measures but ALDI in Union was the absolute worst I've seen any establishment in not adhering to those rules. I'll take the extra time to ride over to Lidl from now on. There's no way I'll put myself through that nonsense again. I get a panic attack just thinking about that mess. read more

Rad! The German supermarket behemoth and owner of Trader Joe's has established a presence in the States that harks to its Teutonic roots. Situated in a building that more closely resembles a bank or 1960s Danish furniture purveyor, Aldi blends so seamlessly into the landscape that you might miss it while you're driving to experience a taste of a popular European shopping experience, a nice touch, having the architecture perfectly complement the retailer's low-key approach to groceries and produce. Not everything is priced at rock-bottom levels. A gallon of milk, for instance, was $3.39, which is more expensive that it's Trader Joe's counterpart ($2.99/gallon). But much of the produce, the fruit in particular, was unbeatable in terms of cost. You might have to deal with less variety than your typical American big-box store or wholesale shopping club, but there are fantastic deals here that'll make you glad you sought out the nondescript market. I really like the store location and the contents. However, the lines are not organized and there is not consistent cashier help. Sometimes there is one line with customers almost backed up to the back of the store. Then they may open up another register and people come from the sides getting in front of others. Occasionally, one might see someone directing people but rarely. I really think there should be pole signs stating which lines are open. And, someone should direct people accordingly. I have seen customers almost fighting for a place in line. I realize that the workers do many things but point blank there needs to be more organization. I try to avoid going there at certain times. Another thing, I have seen rotten or badly bruised fruit (like cantaloupe) out for people to buy when it should not be there. Again, this store needs someone responsible to make sure things like this do not happen. read more

The last time I went to an Aldi, I was Bernau am Chiemsee, Bavaria. It was huge and I rejoiced in my purchase of bizarre canned herring and an orange juicer. Fast forward 15 years and Aldi has fanned out across the eastern US. So, how did it do in Union, NJ? Meh. While I snagged some unusually soft licorice and a fine stinky cheese, most of the stuff here just wasn't something I'd buy. There was a lot of processed food, a lot of meat, and a few produce items. That was a surprise: several reviews praised the produce section as high-quality and affordable, but I was not impressed on either front. If you live near this grocery store, great, check it out. But with its limited selection and ergonomic inconveniences (cash only, quarter deposit for cart, separate DIY bagging after checkout), it doesn't seem worth the trip from Maplewood. I can get European novelties at Trader Joe's, and more useful stuff besides. read more

I have been here before, but not for groceries. I often wonder about food quality or food sources when food is that inexpensive. They do cut a lot of costs with the no frills approach to grocery stores, with a pay for cart system, buy or bring your own bags, and a basic looking store. Its always crowded and the lines tend to be long, only ever one or two cashiers open. I only buy select things from here - paper plates and garden supplies, they always seem to have a good selection of outdoor plants and bulbs, as long as you come when the stuff first arrives they tend to have a pretty good stock. The store is always clean and staff have always been friendly. read more

I've been shopping at this location since it was built and today was a day from hell! The cashier Juleysa was extremely rude! She proceeded to slam my fragile items into the cart, and I had to stop the transaction by informing her that this is not correct and not to do that. The delicate items go on the top from which they came, such as chips and bread. I also had eggs, but she placed them into the top by this time. Her attitude was evident because there was no greeting, but I do not mind that sometimes, I understand that they're tired. I'm an essential worker, as well. Once I corrected her behavior about the fragile items, she proceeded to slam the rest of the things into the cart like a madwoman. I understand that Aldi cashiers move at a quick pace, but this was very different and malicious. I did not say anything to her because I did not want to cause a scene, and I saw the managers restocking, plus we are supposed to limit our time in the stores because of COVID19. So, I came home and completed a survey. The corporate office or representative called me back immediately, and we spoke; however, I feel like she was making excuses for this behavior. Also, the representative mentioned that they would review the tape and keep me posted upon review. I will not be returning to this location; there's another Aldi's in Bloomfield, NJ. It's a little further but being respected is worth the trip. I must add that I have worked in retail and corporate, and customer service starts from the parking lot and ends with the cashier. Cashiers are the last chance for a retail store to make a good impression. read more

It's a decent grocery store. Most items are store brand and the quality is good to excellent. PS: Most people complaining that you have to pay for a shopping cart probably didn't return their carts and just left them in the lot. When you return your cart, you get back a quarter. It's an innovative way to drive down costs AND keeps runway carts from damaging people's cars. read more

Aldi is now one of my go to places for groceries. Very reasonable compared to the local competitors (Shoprite, Stop and Shop). They do not carry many brands and mostly are Aldi branded items. They have an organic section and are reasonably priced as well. read more

If you don't care about name brand food then this is the place to go. Aldi is like a hidden gem in Union. Depending on what day and time you go will depend on the crowd. Bring a quarter for a shopping cart(which you can get back) and plenty of bags for your groceries. You have the option of purchasing bags but why when you can just bring them from home. Parking is plenty and staff is nice. A pretty good amount of food selections and sometimes you will find a name brand or two. read more

It's clean, and i'm fairly impressed with the produce, but the selection of other stuff here is inconsistent, so I can't go there with an ingredient list for a recipe and expect to find everything I need. That being said, I can find unexpected treats at good prices. I do like that you have to "rent" the shopping cart for a quarter, so they aren't all over the lot and they have to pay someone extra to take care of that. I also like that they "encourage' you to bring your own grocery bags by charging you for theirs. Americans aren't used to this, but they've been doing it in places like Australia for something like a decade now. Extra incentive to go green! read more

We visited this Aldi on the way out of Union and I was impressed. Very clean compared to my nearby Aldi stores. Great selection of items. I was able to find everything I wanted which if you regularly shop at an Aldi you know is rare. Their brisket was cheap, the canned tuna was amazingly cheap and I even found the Hawaiian stuffing that I'd been searching for since I found it last Thanksgiving. Prices are great too. The only drawback was on a semi-busy Sunday morning they had just one cashier. Probably the longest Aldi line that I've been in and that's with the cashier moving at an amazing speed. read more

I know Aldi from France, where me and my husband had lived for a year. Compared to the US groceries are so much cheaper in Europe. In general I do my grocery shopping at Walmart and Aldi. Even though I'm upper middle-class, I'm not willing to pay $9 for 6 apples like at Wegmans or Whole Foods. The quality at Aldi is good to excellent and you'll save at least a third compared to Kroger. You hardly find any brand names, the selection is basic and you have to bag your own groceries. On may 9th at approximately 3:07 pm me, my two kids and along with my sister in-laws kids visited the union store in two separated vehicles . the kids wanted to spend their own money to purchase mother's day gifts. After being in line for apparently 45 minutes ,a young Caucasian male who seem to be in a supervisory role approached the kids to advise them that only two persons per family was allowed in the store. He did not ask if we were all together, and assumed that we were one family. After realizing the kids were accompanied by two adults he said he would only allow two per family to enter the store. Ironically I saw many families of three or more persons that were allowed to enter into the store without any issue. I am left to ask myself why the lady who was allowing patrons to enter the store, not have the courtesy to approach me . She sheepishly went into the store to get a back up instead of approaching us with "their on the spot policy " to embarrass my self my kids and my relatives.. On such harsh unprofessional treatment, i refuse to patronize the union Aldi location. We then went to Lidl on route 22 where our business was welcomed with open arms . As a person of color be careful that when your children go into the public, that Discrimination and bigotry is always lurking to present it's ugly face . I would like to see the written policy that Aldi had that prevented my kids with their hard earned monies from entering the store to purchase a mother's day gift for their mother. read more

Aldi Supermarkets, an international chain of foodmarts, is difficult to envision without seeing for yourself. The store is too small and poorly stocked to be the only stop in a weekly quest to feed the family. You will see very few familiar brands; a lot of private label generic items. Many of these "almost" brands are offered at marginally lower prices. "Frills" like grocery bags are available for purchase; credit cards are NOT accepted. The store was clean when last visited, but understaffed. Opinions regarding the Aldi concept may vary, but personally, I don't get it. Further, with Union Shop Rite only a few blocks away, the decision to locate another glorified convenience store here is questionable from a business perspective. The parking lot is never full, even during their opening week, and seems to attract fewer and fewer shoppers with each passing week. Time will tell. read more

This store is absolutely fabulous. What I love most is that I am able to get what I need, and get out very quickly. The store is very clean. I would say I am able to purchase about 70% of my groceries here at a huge savings over regular grocery stores. I also don't have to circle the lot 16 times to park! read more

This store is great, The prices are good and they do have some name brand items in the store as well. Bring your own bags or you could buy from them as well .10 cents for a plastic bag or .05 cents for a brown paper bag. Sometimes they may have 1 cashier open, but they are fast and accurate and the prices you see is what you pay. Get a cart full of groceries less then the big supermarket chains. read more

They take credit cards now!!!! Definitely worth checking out. I used to mainly shop at ShopRite for groceries, but Aldi has become my new favorite place. Their chocolate is way better than familiar brands such as Hershey's, or nestle. You can't beat the prices on produce- organic apples, avocados, tomatoes, etc are all way cheaper than other markets. Garlic is usually $0.59 for 3! Their pineapple orange juice, mango orange juice in the refrigerated section has even impressed otherwise name brand junkies! I have often heard before, people referencing Aldi as a "low budget, cheap" store. Yes, cheapER in prices, but not necessarily in quality. Do a blind taste test! My first time here...I didn't even know what Aldi was until I checked their website. Pretty accurate description. Not a huge selection, and smaller than most supermarkets, but great prices. You might not be able to get everything you need here but it definitely covers the basics. I stopped in bc the Shoprite that was within walking distance of me moved, and this is right on my way home. I ran in to pick up three items - loaf of bread, mozzarella, and liquid eggs (like Egg Beaters but they had a different brand). Had all the items I needed, and picked up dog biscuits too. Whole order came to under $8. Store was clean and quiet. I would have given 5 stars, but there was only 1 cashier open (although she was nice and super quick so it wasn't an issue) and they could do with some music in the store to combat the warehouse-like atmosphere. If you go, make sure to bring your own bags, quarter for the cart (returned to you when you return cart), and bring cash or a debit card (not credit). Worst customer service. They put a price on the item and when you go to the cash register the product always has a different price. Manager refuses to admit she and her team made the mistake and argues with you. Putting the price on one thing and then charging it at a different price is ILLEGAL. read more
