This places breakfast sandwiches are incredible. I think there was a wrap (aka burrito) I used to get regularly. I never ate in always ordered and took it to go. The drip coffee was good too, a rare and magical combo to have both good food and coffee! I like this quaint little shop. Prices are decent. Staff friendliness is hit n miss. One blonde gal was super nice while another brunette was rather odd and rude. She would have rathered be doing what she was doing than help us. Even asking her to slice bread seemed to annoy her. I didn't dare ask for anything else. Owner seems very nice and appreciative of business. I was quite annoyed and taken back by a very odd couple who seems to frequent this bakery. Beware! They are very intrusive and in your face and pose as Christian teachers. Apparently these 2 are a ongoing problem here. Because of them I have started to avoid coming here. Very unfortunate. Overall though a good bakery. Wish they had a more grand display case with more variety. Bakery items in case seem awfully limited. read more

I've been to every Italian restaurant in Santa Cruz and wasted lots of money. NO ONE MAKES PASTA LIKE THIS LITTLE HOLE IN THE WALL. I am Italian my parents owned a pasta house. I know my pasta. The guys who cook are mostly Mexican and sweethearts but the owners are Italian and sometimes they have Italians cooking. The plate of FRESH HOMEMADE pasta with fresh bread and fresh pesto FOR $5.00 to $8.00. Are you for real? This is crazy good. You will gain pounds here. Love supporting a family business. Personally I don't eat cookies and Italian cookies tend to be dry so I come for the pasta and authentic Italian coffee, to break down all those carbs. Damn, nobody reviewed Aldo's? It's a real Italian bakery, maybe the only one south of San Francisco and north of Santa Barbara. They make good Italian pastries and (at the holidays) holiday cakes and bread. I'm not an expert, but I tried something different every time I went in and they were always excellent. Well, shortbread cookies can only be so good, but otherwise they have some luscious stuff there. Short hours and iffy parking are the major drawbacks. It's in "downtown Soquel," right by the Ugly Mug. Their focaccia is delicious and olive-oil drenched and inexpensive. Two pieces make a substantial lunch for under $3 bucks. Their sandwiches, pre-made, always taste fresh and are made with high-quality ingredients. The dining area is attractive and quiet; it's a good place to be. read more

I went here because it had good reviews. I got a lemon Linzer torte and a hazelnut macaroon cookie. The linzer torte was a shortbread cookie with some lemon jelly. A Linzer torte is supposed to have a nut flour in it along with cooked egg yolks. I went to Culinary school and have has these at many places and this was by far the worse imitation of a Linzer Torte. The hazelnut cookie was hard as if it was old, and tastes like a mixture of old tootsie rolls and dog food. read more

If there was a negative star I'd click on it. First I walked in with my family who includes my brother who has Down syndrome. I wanted something sweet, so I thought I'd surprise him by taking him to aldo bakery; should have gone to my favorite one sweet shop stop Hoffman's Bistros in Down Town Santa Cruz who sell the best pastries on the central coast. Half way inn, my brother already at the glass displays. Out of the blue one of the two ladies behind the displays stormed out, spooking us as if a tornado was on the horizon, both in loud disturbing tones telling us more than a few times, they were closed; once we got the point we back walked our ways towards the exit. The older lady sarcastically telling my family to come next time. Nope, not me, not anymore, so I visited their neighbors The Ugly Mug, much better, they will even go out of there way to make smile appear. read more

My daughter got married on June 25th at Aldo's restaurant so I called Norie at Aldos Bakery about the desserts. My daughter did not want a wedding cake she wanted mini desserts. Norie was so helpful telling me about what she could do. We had mini cupcakes, eclairs, lemon squares,canniloni and cookies. They were a big success. The quote was very good so we went with the bakery. They delivered them to the restaurant and set them up for us. The mini cupcakes were the biggest success. Definitely would call Norie again if in needed of desserts while in Santa Cruz. read more

Almond Croissants - they have the best. I go to all the bakeries in the Santa Cruz area so I have some experience. Aldo's has the best almond croissants around. What some bakeries pass off as croissants is sad. Aldo's' are flakey, light and buttery. The best part is the almond part. They use an almond filling the oozes out in the baking process and creates these crispy, melt in your mouth "wings" around the edges. The sliced almonds on top are perfect - not rubbery like some, but fresh, crisp and, well, nutty. Oh yeah, they have other really good stuff too and since they got a new bakery case with better lighting you can see it all. read more

I have eaten here every morning (with exception to Sunday because they are closed) for the last week and have tried a variety of items off of their menu. Everything is phenomenal! The staff is unbelievably friendly and amazing, and the food is to die for. I do not want to leave this city and it is entirely because I cannot imagine waking up without breakfast from Aldo's.
