The actual rental car was physically a disaster - these was quite a lot of cosmetic damage, . . . whatever the dents and scrapes were of no real concern to me, also there was A LOT of beach sand inside the car, but again no big deal. The bald tires, the check engine light on as well as the tire pressure monitor light on . . . were a big deal and quite concerning. I was renting for 6 hours and traveled a total of maybe 25 miles throughout the entire day just sightseeing, however the entire time I was driving, I was keenly aware of the bald tires situation and was uneasy, thinking about other drivers and having to stop short etc. so with that coming into play, my overall rating was much lower than I expected. If I was to rent again from Aldo's, I'd insist on a vehicle that would pass RI State Inspection, because I KNOW for sure those tires that are currently on that Camry, would NOT.

Their boss agreed over the phone to "hold" a PT Cruiser for us while we walked over from Aldo's. When we got there, no one at the desk knew what we were talking about. We waited in line for 35-40 minutes before someone called the boss again and was told to hand us the PT Cruiser. At first, we were genuinely grateful that this location was able to step in and get us any car after the Bronco disaster but that relief disappeared almost instantly, and it became very clear we just traded one mess for another. The car was already running in the lot, and once we got in, we saw every dashboard warning light on check engine, battery and a portable battery booster just sitting in the back seat. No one mentioned any issues with the car, no warning that it might not start. Within the first couple of hours, it stalled repeatedly. We were stranded in a parking lot with no cell service at one stop, forced to try starting it over and over until it finally turned over. Later, it died again before barely restarting. The suspension was shot and it felt absolutely unsafe to drive even on main paved roads, never mind the island's dirt roads or side parking spots. We avoided certain roads entirely because the car felt like it couldn't handle even a small bump. It was slow to accelerate, rattled constantly, and genuinely felt dangerous. We were so nervous about getting stuck somewhere else with no way to call for help that we cut our rental short by hours and returned it early. When I told the woman at Old Harbor about the problems, multiple stalls, dangerous suspension, dashboard lights on from the moment we got in... she just stared at me, said nothing, and took the keys. No apology. No "we'll look into it." Nothing. This car should never have been rented to anyone. It was unsafe, unreliable, and clearly not maintained. And the complete lack of concern from the staff when I reported the issues says everything about how little they care about customer safety.

DONT DO IT. MOPED is the way to go. The island is bigger than you think I got talking to the guy behind the desk while filling out the paperwork and he was awesome. Very friendly and informative. Long story short... he ended up giving us 3 hours for the price of 1! If you have never been in control of a moped, don't worry. The more you relax, the easy it is. Before they let you ride away they just made sure you have the basics down. Ride down the street and back. I think renting a moped is a MUST do if you're on the island for a few days.

1 STAR -- Extremely disappointing experience…read more We reserved a brand-new Bronco convertible for 4 hours for $368.90 from Aldo's. Unfortunately, the experience was a complete disappointment and put a huge damper on our limited day on Block Island. We arrived at the moped/ bike pick up and driven to the car lot by an employee who almost ran into pedestrians on the way there. When we arrived at the car lot, we were told the Bronco we reserved had not been returned, despite being due back two hours earlier. The employee helping us was kind and apologized, and we were offered a Jeep instead. Since we were only on the island from approximately 11:30-5:00, we reluctantly accepted it so we wouldn't lose even more time. We were told, "There are a few lights on the dash, but don't worry about that." There were multiple warning lights, including tire pressure, traction control, ABS and check engine. Almost immediately after leaving, the Jeep stalled. It also had a cracked windshield, the windows didn't work, and the driver's seatbelt was extremely difficult to release. The Jeep stalled at least three more times during our rental. We called Aldo's immediately and were told a golf cart would be available in about 30 minutes. Half way through our rental, they offered us the Bronco, but by then we had already lost valuable time and didn't want to spend even more of our day driving back and forth to exchange vehicles. We asked to return the Jeep at the town location rather than drive another 15 minutes to the lot after a day of hell with this jeep. We were initially told no, but after asking if we could receive a partial refund due to the experience, we were eventually allowed to return it in town, with no mention of a partial refund. I also spoke to two employees, one which I believe is the manager, upon returning it and explained our struggles all day with the car, obtaining nothing more than an, "I'm sorry." We returned it 45 minutes early because we were done dealing with the vehicle. We were told we'd be refunded the difference between the Bronco and Jeep. The Jeep was quoted at $225/hour, yet we were charged $313.30. I called the manager, who explained that the charge included a 17% rental/sales tax and a 3.99% credit card fee, bringing the rental portion to $275.42. So they charged me incorrectly, and would refund us the 93.48 However, I still do not understand how the final charge was calculated or why the refund did not clearly reflect the difference between the two rentals. For comparison, the original Bronco charge of $368.90 included only $18.90 in tax, while the Jeep charge had $50.42 in additional charges.Upon writing this maybe they didn't apply the military discount that was applied to the bronco, to the Jeep? But if it was on my reservation I don't know how that could be. I would appreciate a clear, itemized explanation and appropriate refund. Most importantly, a vehicle with this many warning lights that repeatedly stalls should not be rented to customers. Telling a customer not to worry about multiple safety and mechanical warning lights is unacceptable. The initial employee was kind, but the vehicle condition, lack of communication, lost time and confusing charges made this an extremely frustrating experience. I cannot recommend Aldo's and would strongly suggest renting elsewhere.

A great place to hike, bike, yak or swim. When I go I always make sure I bring my own stuff because there really aren't a lot of stores on the island outside of restaurants and touristy places. If you do happen to forget something or need a certain part for a bike or yak the mainland is over 12 miles away. Fortunately Block Island Sports Shop is around to help. Sure it has it's touristy side, just like virtually every other place on the island. Lots of clothing, hats, sunglasses, sandals and of course crummy t-shirts but it also has some serious equipment. Block Island Sports has a nice selection of watery things like snorkeling equipment, surfboards and even yaks. Parts and accessories for them too and a very knowledgeable stuff that will gladly help out with stupid questions and give sage advice. You will also find a good selection of backpacks, water bottles and other hiking and biking stuff. Sure Block Island Sport Store isn't cheap, but then nothing on Block island is and the store isn't outrageously overpriced. They do have some quality stuff, a nice selection and has saved my butt more than once. A cool store for people that want to do more than just lay in the sun.

BEWARE - Serious Safety Concern…read more Within minutes of arriving, the owner's large German Shepherd broke free and attacked our 20-pound Cavapoo. Had I not been able to pull my dog away, the outcome could have been much worse. While trying to protect our dog, my wife suffered a hyperextended thumb and scratches from the dog's nails. She was shaken and injured, and what should have been a fun day on Block Island was ruined before it even began. We were told the dog had "broken" its leash, but that raises an obvious question: why is a dog capable of attacking another animal being kept around customers? The response was minimal, and before we had even left, it was back to business as usual. Later that day, we met another couple who had rented from this company. Their moped reportedly broke down within minutes, and they said they received little assistance and had to walk back. We ultimately rented from Island Moped and later learned that it is owned by the same individual behind Moped Man and Old Harbor Mopeds & Bikes. While the staff treated us professionally and accommodated our situation, the events of that day left us questioning whether customer safety is given the level of attention it deserves. Block Island is a fantastic destination with plenty of rental options. Based on our experience, there is absolutely no reason to take the risk with this business. The attack was bad enough. The dismissive response afterward was worse. It made it clear that customer safety is not a priority for this business. We will never return, and anyone traveling with children, pets, or family members should think very carefully before doing business here.

Town of New Shoreham is on Block Island, which is 14 miles east of Long Island and 9 miles south of…read morethe mainland, RI. The population is approximately 1,410. There are multiple ferries that will take you there. It's a beautiful and quaint little island and definitely worth a visit. I try to make it every summer when I lived in Rhode Island. In the summer, that is the place to be. We would rent or bring our moped/bike and ride around the island. The beaches are decent but they do have a slightly deep drop and the water is frigid. There are historic lighthouses and trails; many people fish, sail, and boat. There are some restaurants, shops, and inns. Ballard's is a popular spot. I've never been off season but I would like to see it; it must be quiet and serene. Overall, a beautiful place and I love visiting.
