These owners clearly have expertise above and beyond their location. As I sat waiting for my food to be individually cooked, I could witness many of the clientele who came in. A crowd preferring their purchase choices to be inexpensive alcohol and chip snacks. A juxtaposition between the food they offer and the clientele I observed. They did an excellent job of catering to the menu ordering crowd and the other shoppers. Unfortunately, many of their clients failed to recognize the quality food being offered them and went with more snack food. The pork slouvaki was my favorite. such vibrant seasonings on the pork and such delicious vegetables that go with this dish. I knew I would want another kebab once I got home, so had to order another. I don't know what white wine they chose for me, but great enough to order a second glass. Spanakopita was good. I am guessing it is deep fried rather than baked. The outer counting of phyllo was overall crispy to me, however enjoyed the cheesy/ spinach insides. The "small" Greek salad with the Slovaki was not small, but two large servings . Tomatoes, romaine, spinach, feta cheese, red onions, cabbage and cauliflower made up a great salad, especially when added with the homemade dressing. Tons of feta cheese. Lastly, pistachio baklava. Nice flavors, but please serve it warm or at least room temperature. The flavors bloom more than when they are not cold. Great baklava once I took it home and warmed it up. Would have spent twice as much at an any other Greek restaurant and had lower quality food. Such a great experience for good food, my first priority.

As other reviews state, this is kind of a strange restaurant that seems more like it's for regulars rather than new customers. There's no actual printed menu other than hints of a menu on the signboard above the register (and we confirmed this with the cashier). I guess this is to save on cost, which coincidentally also allows them to adjust pricing on the fly? There are photos posted of the menu from 2024, but my guess is those are of an old pre-COVID menu, given that the prices increased over 50% at this point. Per other reviews, dine-in orders are also packaged in takeout boxes and can take a variable amount of time to cook. We don't usually get takeout much, but decided to call in an order for this visit. This was at around 5PM on Saturday and we were promised a 30 minute wait. We arrived 30 minutes later, paid for the order, and it ended up taking about another 10 minutes. Not too bad. Benechin Beef ($18.99) - As I learned, benechin is essentially a different term for the more commonly known (at least in the US) jollof rice. In this case, the rice has a deep tomato and spiced umami that combines a pleasant saltiness with a heat level that builds and builds. It's topped with a small side of cabbage that seems to be stewed in the same spices as the rice. There's then a piece of yucca root, stewed but still rather toothsome with fiber strands all in one direction like muscle grains. For the beef, they include four pieces of thinly sliced barbecued meat. The meat is extremely flavorful with what seems to be a black pepper and allium based spice mixture. In terms of texture, it's quite tough and chewy, almost to the level of beef jerky. (4/5) Afra Lamb ($20.99) - This dish comes with a choice of rice or salad, not both as the older menu states. We went with the rice which comes in a smaller container and is a long grain rice cooked until perfectly fluffy. It's cooked with salt, which is something that I'm not used to. The larger container includes a mound of bone-in lamb meat doused in a savory and tangy mustard based sauce. The meat is a very interesting mixture of off-cuts, a combination of cross-cut ribs, shanks, lamb chops, and some random other cuts. The lamb is mostly bone in and there are tons of small bone shards all over the meat, making it a bit of a pain to eat. The meat isn't very gamey and all and is much more tender as compared to the beef jerky in the benechin. On top of the lamb, they include mustard infused softened onions and whole quick-charred onion rings, resulting in a still crunchy texture. They include some powdered dried chilis is a small pile hidden under the onions. Be careful - it's starts out smoky like paprika to start and the heat only starts to build after a couple of seconds. (4/5) Bantaba is a great place to try some new food. While it's not the most beginner friendly restaurant, it offers some flavors and dishes that are hard to find around Seattle. Didn't go in with any expectations, but this little family-owned spot completely blew us away. The staff greeted us warmly as soon as we walked in and were super friendly throughout. We finished with a scoop of their homemade Thai iced tea ice cream, which was such a nice treat. Now since moving to Seattle, I've been on the hunt for a similar market and Mmarket seemed to fit the bill. This is a small market that most importantly (for me at least) has a small kitchen pumping out classic Iraqi dishes, and also the typical Iraqi breads. Iraqi-Style Beef Kabob ($2.99) - They only had beef kabobs available when I stopped by. They grill the kabobs over a normal gas grill rather than the more traditional charcoal. The temperature and cook time seems to be a bit lacking as there isn't really any developed char or smoky flavors. The smell is almost gamey, but the texture is very tender, and the taste is mild with some allium notes. Charring would greatly improve the anemic appearance and taste of the meat. They serve the kabobs on a wheat pita and for some reason do not include any charred tomatoes, onions, etc that this would normally come with. This is probably the only place to get Iraqi-style kabobs in the area, so I can't complain too much. (3/5) Hummus ($4.99) - This is served in an 8 oz container and they add olive oil and sumac on top before handing it over. The hummus is a bit coarse and has a somewhat strong earthier flavor than a lot of other hummus. Still, this seems to be relatively fresh, without the taste of lemon or preservatives. That's a win in my book, for an area not known for Middle Eastern food. (3/5) Mmarket also sells bags filled with khubz and samoon, which according to the owner, isn't baked on site, but at a bakery nearby. Next time I visit I'll need to ask if that bakery is accessible to the public, just so I can get the freshest bread right from the tanoor, assuming they use one rather than a commercial oven. I gave Mmarket a 3/5 purely because the only comparison point I have is with the Iraqi markets in Dearborn. Let's be real, outside of a select few regions in the US, 90% of "Middle-Eastern" (aka "Mediterranean") food is some abomination of Americanized Greek food mixed with food from the Levant. Of the more authentic 10%, 90% of those restaurants focus on Lebanese cuisine. That last 1% includes places like Mmarket - places that serve authentic food from a specific country in the Middle East. While the execution of the food here is more grocery-store level than restaurant-level, for anyone who wants a taste of real Iraqi food, Mmarket is probably the best in the area. While I wouldn't get the prepared food again, I would come back for the khubz specifically since I don't think there's anywhere else near Seattle that has it for sale.
