There's nothing better than having fresh, beautiful flowers in your home to brighten the space, as a gift to let someone know you care, or to make a special occasion that much more radiant and memorable. In our case, we've had the privilege of having floral arrangements from Alena's for all of these things, including our fall wedding on the coast. Being local HMB folks, when we decided to tie the knot, there was no question we'd ask Alena if she and her talented colleague, Kelly, would create floral arrangements for the big day. Truly, their flowers were the most beautiful part of our wedding! I will let ya'll know though not to be disappointed in advance, because I don't think Alena and team do flowers for weddings as a standard anymore, so you may have to enjoy their incredible arrangements on a more casual level. The caveat is it may be worth asking though, as I did last year around this time. I had been enjoying Alena's flowers for many years, and couldn't imagine having anyone else create our florals for this huge event. So I walked in one day and was lucky to meet Alena in person. I let her know what I fan I was of her artistry, and asked if she did weddings. And this, besides her unmatchable work, is why this woman is a badass...I'm paraphrasing here, but loved her response: Alena furrowed her brow and said, "No. we don't do weddings anymore." "That's too bad." I said, trying to hide my disappointment. "The reason is ever since Instagram, everyone getting married wants those awful over the top boho feather things. Or demands recreations of pictures they see on Pinterest. Just...no. It takes the fun out of it." This is someone who knows their worth and isn't willing to be part of an overly micromanaged version of reality. Love it! I totally get where she's coming from and we chatted about it for a bit, and then a Cheshire smile appeared and she said, "Ok, you're my kind of people. You get it and I'll do the flowers for your wedding." I was stoked! I assured her I wasn't a bridezilla again for good measure, and that we wanted her design and style-we just gave the basics: colors, vibe, sizes...and so on. When I saw the flowers on the wedding day, they blew me away! Stunning. And just look at the pictures below. They don't come near doing justice to her work. For not having met in person, both Alena and Kelly delivered exceptional customer service and yet were accommodating at the same time. My first interaction was with Kelly. She had such a bubbly spirit! Alena was just as kind and insightful when it came to the request on having a romantic floral bouquet. It was as simple as sending a few pictures and explaining the theme I had in mind. In addition there was no resistance in obliging to our desired budget. Following after, a write up was sent by email and details were confirmed. To have one less worry we also requested the bouquet be delivered on site for only $25! All that was left to do was make the payment one week ahead. You can even pay over the phone like we did. I couldn't have been more happy with my blossoming bridal bouquet. It's my wedding day and I'm heading off to the venue in HMB. My best friend asked if she could make my wedding bouquet and I think "how special!" Alena Jean was recommended to me as I was wandering through a bookstore and saw a vase filled with some unique flowers. I asked the lady at the register about them and she pointed me down the street to this wonderful place. I don't remember the name of that bookstore, but I remember Alena Jean. This was my absolute favorite store in all of Half Moon Bay! The first thing I see is a cat curled up in a terra cotta pot. Adorable. Then we get greeted by a gentleman watering the plants who encourages us to wander around the garden. I fall in love with how lush everything is. They have all sorts of unique plants and flowers (some even supposedly smell like chocolate)! My boyfriend has been looking for succulents and they custom-made him something in a wooden pot that surpassed his expectations. They custom-made me an order as well. I got Japanese Marimo moss balls (a national treasure) over black gravel in a hanging glass urn and also got a custom-made terrarium with an air plant (since unlike everyone here I don't have such a green thumb) and moss over black gravel. It's still alive too! I absolutely loved everything they made. Everyone in the store was so nice. They answered all our questions. We met Alena Jean herself. Our custom-made orders were created while we waited and they were so quick about it. Everything was affordable. I would not hesitate to come back here at all. Alena Jean even joked about giving my boyfriend and me permission to come back to take our wedding pictures here (not engaged so don't want to start any rumors)! Well maybe she was serious. Breathtaking! If I had only one word to describe the wedding florals Alena Jean created it would be "breathtaking." My amazing husband found Alena Jean's charming shop in Half Moon Bay when we were at the height of our wedding planning frenzy. He called and knew from the very atmosphere and look I would love Alena's whole aesthetic and approach. We were looking for rustic, natural and sustainable. The shop is like a plant- and flower-lovers haven or fantasyland. It is in a barn structure, with gorgeous plants and vessels all about, and had the feel we were aiming for. While there, my husband even overheard a customer talking about a sick plant, and one of Alena Jean's staff members generously offered to take care of the plant at the shop and nurse it back to health. It's like plant hospital too! Alena Jean was the very best at providing me with a detailed written quote for florals. She detailed every kind of plant and flower she would use, customized special florals for in-laws and honoring particular guests, and was wonderful about adjusting to our budget. The best way to communicate is to just go right in to see Alena Jean at her shop. It's worth the trip, and a lovely experience. Just make an appointment. Phone is the second best way to communicate. Email will reach her, but she is incredibly busy, so you need to understand she cannot reply immediately. But no need to fear. On our wedding day, Alena Jean herself delivered all our centerpieces, an amazing arch, bouquets, boutonnières and corsages and set up the wedding arch. We were stunned. She created the most precious basket for our flower girl. My bouquet was a work of art. Our photographers loved photographing just the bouquets as much as photographing the wedding party! read more
