We contracted with Alexander and Sons for the installation of a new pool deck and pergola to replace damaged and outdated same. The work was performed entirely to our satisfaction, according to contract and in a timely fashion. I recommend Alexander and Sons without hesitation. Specifically: A well stocked showroom was helpful with design consultations and material selection. Paul Sarkis is very knowledgeable and guided us expertly through the many different choices. Samples were made available to confirm our choices on location. Last minute changes in design (from tweaking the contours here and there to more substantial scope changes) were accommodated without any problem. Project execution. In addition to Alexander and Sons, this project involved a pool contractor. Schedules had to mesh and timelines adhered to. Unlike the pool contractor, Alexander and Sons didn't miss a single promised completion date. Quality of the work. Alexander and Sons employs very capable crafts people to obtain the best possible results. Excellent stone work (both concrete and natural stone) and outstandingly good carpentry (pergola). Pricing of the entire package is somewhere in the middle. Alexander isn't the low bidder and by no means the highest. Considering the scope of work and quality delivered I'd say that the pricing was very fair and competitive. read more

I called for a bid, based on Yelp rating. They charge $30 for an estimate that "supposedly" is credited toward your final bill if you use them..Personally, I don't think we should have to pay for an estimate that is going to bring them new business. read more

I selected Alexander and Sons to do my patio cover because of all the positive reviews on Homeadvisor.com. On closer inspection of all the positive reviews they were on laying concrete and not building arbors. Paul (the owner) is a top notch guy that tries to do right by the customer, however I wish his work crew had the same skill set as Paul. Overall I was pleased by the design and the structure they built, but I ran into a few problems listed below: * The paint job on the arbor was poor, even bad. After they finished I went back and repainted the entire arbor because they missed too many spots and the paint on the treated posts was very poor. They did not take the time to paint in the pores of the wood so it looked spotty - you could still see the treated wood. * When I repainted the arbor I found that they left all the staples in the wood and painted over them. I had to go back in and remove all the staples and paint over them. * The workers had no clue how to work the chop saw to cut 45 degree angles for the footing and some of the cuts were not exactly straight. * Some of the wood used was visibly horrible. It looked like someone used wood putty to fill in cracks and some of the lumber was chewed up. If I had not complained to Paul, the worst of the wood would have ended up in the arbor, but Paul managed to replace two of the worst pieces. Some made it into the arbor. I already had an idea how I wanted the arbor, but Paul made my idea better with his suggestions. I'm glad I took his advice, even though it cost me more. The brick work where the posts were placed into the ground was OUTSTANDING. You could not tell where the old brick work was and where the replacement bricks were placed. Alexander and Sons was not the lowest nor the highest price, but rather on the higher end compared to the competition. August 31, 2015: Two years later...some of the wood has begun to show signs of splitting. Bottom line: Poor, poor quality lumber used (the worst) and poor craftsmanship. If I had to do it over again, I would definitely not use Alexander and Sons and I would NOT recommend them - at least on on arbors. read more

The project included removing some very thick old exposed aggregate concrete and replacing it with very nice stamped concrete - interesting color combination and pattern. The project also involved some stone over concrete - expertly completed. Paul was very helpful in choosing the colors and patterns for the stamped concrete that we liked and that went well with the area environment. We hired Alexander & Sons to transform our front courtyard. Overall, we couldn't be more pleased with the process and the outcome. From day one, Paul was very easy to work with and understood what we were trying to accomplish. Every day throughout the project he spent a lot of time supervising his crew and inspecting their progress. The end result is a gorgeous courtyard, which includes a slate tile sidewalk, crushed granite patio area, plus new concrete along our driveway and a replaced portion of our front sidewalk. He is good at listening and providing his professional knowledge and expertise to work with us to reach a plan that we really loved! Paul's crew always arrived on time and did a good job clean-up afterwards. Paul also kindly helped me remove a couple of extra bushes in the front yard. There is one thing home owners may need to pay attention: in order to make changes to the curb (for us we don't have side walk, so it is only a thin line of curb), you need to get the city permit. That thin line of curb was also not included in the original contract. We did not know that. So if you want to make any changes to the curb, please plan ahead. We had Alexander and Sons extend our backyard patio area, and it turned out great! We had existing stamped, colored concrete, but it was 15 years old. Since it was quite faded, it would have been difficult to match so we decided to tear out most of the existing and replace it with new. We did have to leave existing concrete on either end, that needed to be tied in to the new. Due to the pieces that were left in place, decisions about how the patio was to be banked were a challenge. After several brainstorming sessions, we came to a compromise proposal that looks really great now that it is done. Paul and his team did a stamped concrete and landscaping project in our backyard. Paul is a very friendly and pleasant person. He communicated everything very clearly from start to finish, and is very organized. The team met all the milestones and the final deadline that was promised. Paul was very forthcoming in giving good suggestions and came up with a good design instead of just doing what was asked. We also changed our mind about the design a few times, and Paul was very patient throughout. He came home to take measurements twice, but charged us only for one visit. They even came on a Sunday afternoon because we wanted some changes before the concrete was poured on Monday morning. That being said, I think they are primarily concrete experts, and plumbing is not really their forte. While the concrete estimates were reasonable, we felt that the plumbing estimates were very high (more than double of other quotes we got). So we got most of our plumbing done through someone else. Overall we had a very pleasant experience with Paul and team. I would recommend Alexandar & Sons to anyone looking to do a concrete/landscaping project. We used Alexander & Sons for a major landscape project including two patios, 2 retaining walls, steps, tree trimming, and yard full of plaintings and watering system. Despite the challenges of working during the pandemic, Paul has maintained his good humor. He stopped by the job site each morning to discuss the details for day and responded to emails and phone calls almost immediately. We really appreciated this level of communication as it provided both peace of mind and an opportunity to discuss details. In several cases Paul's team mocked up options with wood so we could visualize how concrete would fit. Paul was also flexible about making changes to the plan. As with any job this large, with a plan as loose as ours, mistakes can happen. How a contractor responds to those is really the differentiator in my opinion---and in our case, mistakes were quickly fixed before any concrete was poured (again, the daily visits helped ensure that). Paul's team was responsive and respectful. They worked quickly and diligently cleaned up after themselves when the work was done. Overall, we are very happy with how our yard turned out. The retaining wall abutting the sidewalk and our entry stairs have received multiple compliments from neighbors. They removed a large area of ivy and replaced it with low-maintenance plants and flowers to create a beautiful garden. Within the past 12 months I've had one general, two HVAC, two plumbers, one electrician, three roofers, three fencers, one exterminator, four flooring come by to give estimates, and nobody charges. I don't even live far away from this business. I understand that people's time is valuable, but cost of doing and getting new business should not be on the customer, whose time is also valuable. read more

Paul and crew did a good job of installing a new driveway and front walkway bordered with brick at a property I manage in Saratoga. His estimate was neither the least or most, but he had several references in the area and was a businessman rather than a handshake contractor. The crew cut through the main water line that was installed higher in the ground than it should have been so not their fault, but he estimated 2X the cost to replace it properly than a plumber charged, so watch adding things on to your contract! Paul was efficient, checked the work repeatedly and was usually available by phone. I think he was professional, thorough and honest and would recommend him with the following comments: there is no "wiggle room" in his estimates even when adding on more work, and he can talk down to you a bit when you ask questions.. We had Alexander and sons, Inc do a exposed aggregate driveway for us. Paul came out and worked through the design and gave good input based on his experience. He had a very creative solution to get around a problem with out brick planter. His estimate was detailed and stated exactly what would be done. With the estimate he supplied addresses of a number of jobs he did in the area so I could see them and talk to the people about their experience. After I agreed on the items in the contract, he started the job and completed it is less than a week. In my experience, once the sale is complete you never see the person who did the estimate and design again. This experience was very different. Paul was on site much of the time to supervise the workers. When he was not there, he could be reached by phone very quickly. He takes pride in his work and is easy to work with. IMPORTANT - understand and follow the concrete curing process. Many experts say newly poured concrete should be keep wet for a minimum of 3 days after pouring to avoid future cracking. This company with the demo of approx. two 6x6 concrete slabs between the curb and gutter of additional work would be $4900. Don't waste the $45 fee just to come out for a bid.
