Have gone to Alexanders cafe many times. Really enjoy this place! I particularly love the Schnitzel and the roasted chicken. Boyfriend is also a fan of the Schnitzel - huge, tasty, fresh. We tend to eat it with the spaetzle which is very tasty and makes it authentic! The creamy chicken soup is also quite delicious. The prices are reasonable and the environment family friendly. The service tends to be prompt and courteous. Parking is free in front of the restaurant which is nice. They have what appears to be delicious cake - will try that next time! I've been here twice now, the first time for lunch and the second time for breakfast. The lunch was very good, but it's the breakfast that has yearning to go back. I got the tiramisu pancakes and they were absolutely to die for. The picture that I posted of them doesn't do the dish justice as it was huge and oh so filling. I'm not one to leave food on my plate, especially not something sweet and covered in chocolate, but I wasn't able to finish these. The staff here is very friendly and I love the atmosphere also. We stayed a nearby hotel for a wedding and needed a good meal before the 9+ hours we were about to spend in the car. I am so grateful we found Alexander's! First of all, I could not believe how huge this place was. It was pretty crowded and we still only waited 10-15 minutes for our table. It was a Sunday, around brunch and they had a live piano player in the lobby! It was great to watch, I was not only very impressed with his music, but also very distracted from the wait! Once we got seated, our server, Tiana took wonderful care of us. We were all incredibly pleased with our meals. I ordered the Mac & Cheese omelette because hey....why not?! Creamy mac & cheese wrapped up in fluffy egg...it doesn't get any better than that! My boyfriend and I are both maniacs about Benedicts as well, so he had to try the Pot Roast Benedict. Slow-roasted braised beef, scallions and hollandaise sauce. YES! I don't recall ever seeing a beef option for benedict and was very pleased! Very nice atmosphere, great menu choices, and even though it was extremely busy, we were seated right away. The server was quick and very attentive, and the food was great. The sausage was delicious! Came here because we stayed in Hampton inn but we missed our breakfast and we wanted to find somewhere close to eat. Right after we came in we heard live music playing by a pianist and it was sort loud but nice. Fortunately there was no wait and our server her name is Sue she came to greet us and got us drink right after we sat down. She recommended us the fresh squeezed orange juice and we also ordered apple juice and coffee but she's right the orange juice tasted the best among all. I ordered pot roast skillet wile my bf had bone ham with hush browns. Food came fast and fresh and they even put cinnamon butter cream on top of the pancake and it tasted so good. My pot roast was very cheese and well flavored, my only complaints was I only got 3 pieces of beef and too much of potato. My husband took me out to lunch at Alexander's. It's usually not our first choice because it's a little pricey, but several websites said they have a gluten-free menu and I am currently on an elimination diet to cure some health issues, so I was excited to see what they had. When we arrived we were told there was no gluten free menu, which was frustrating because this was advertised and they are obviously not managing the information being provided to consumers. So, I started scanning the menu and my eyes landed on a salad with chicken that I thought would be okay. I explained my restrictions and asked about how the chicken was cooked and whether the salad could be served without croutons. The waitress went to find out about the chicken-came back to tell me it is cooked in broth, so it's fine. Well, all broth is not gluten free, so it's not fine. And that information was not at all helpful. So, I skipped the chicken, and the croutons, which unfortunately left me with a beautiful, but very unfilling $12 salad - which, was delivered with a big piece of garlic bread on top. Uh, thanks. I'd describe the decor as modern American bistro with lightly stained wood table tops and espresso colored chairs. They offer a full menu for breakfast, but I opted for one of their weekday specials: 2 eggs, 2 sausage, and toast. At $5.99, it was the perfect size for a quick workday meal, though the Rosemary potatoes one of my neighbors ordered looked great. Half & half and flavored creamers are on the table along with the little tubs of whipped butter. I love that toast comes out dry and you butter it as you wish. Happy surprise-the rye bread has caraway seed. Yum! Another surprise-they have mouthwash in the bathroom! It was put to use as I headed out the door for my meeting. Alexander's Restaurant is pretty good within the class of family restaurants. Management, the owners, I presume, are on the floor and in the kitchen. They keep close tabs on what is going on. Service is adequate, but not remarkable either way. The menu selection is just a bit larger than the average family restaurant, and the dishes are executed competently. Side salads are a nice size, and bread is fresh --- one of those little things that makes a restaurant stand out. I'm not sure whether Alexander's makes its own pie, but each piece is $1.00 if you have ordered dinner there. I tried the pie and it is ok. Aside from the pie, prices overall are moderate, but not cheap, for the value received. Coffee, tea, iced tea and so on, are mediocre. Alexander's is a bit of a mixed bag, but I recommend it to anybody looking for a family restaurant. read more

This is an above average area family restaurant. It is a frequent stop for Sunday breakfast and it doesn't disappoint. Parking is ample and easy to get to if you are driving North on 31. This used to be one of our favorite spots, but the last 5 visits have been hot garbage. There is always a wait and food is more expensive than most. It used to be worth it, but I'm done trying. After reading the positive reviews I was super excited about trying Alexander's Cafe. So, I decided to stop by for breakfast this morning with my daughter and granddaughter. My first experience was less than favorable. First the waitress had to come back to our table multiple times to confirm the order, second she brought out pancakes after not confirming if I wanted toast or pancakes, third my 4 year old granddaughter was so excited about her chocolate chip pancakes and she received plain pancakes. We swung in off of I-90 to find some dinner and kill a little time before picking our son up at O'Hare. I wasn't expecting much, my suburban IL dining experiences past were nothing to write home about...an endless stream of bland chains serving bland chain food that was microwaved by some teenager who can't boil water otherwise. We also had a side of calamari that was perfectly done and delicious. The service was great, the food was great as well. We were a little confused by the term 'cafe' as it really doesn't seem to fit this place. There was a pie case, but other than that -- and including the fact that they aren't open til 4 pm I believe, it was more restaurant-ish than cafe-ish. For that, I'll knock a star off, just because it's a little misleading for someone who was looking for a cafe'. Nitpicking, I know. And it's in Illinois. Bloody tolls! Ok...Five Stars. We found this fabulous cafe on our journey from Indiana through Illinois. Elgin's Alexanders Cafe is a very popular place. The food is excellent and menu selections would make everyone happy. With a varied menu it is easy to choose a favorite. I had the Chicken (grilled) Caesar Wrap with fresh fruit. They have a display of cakes and other bakery delights at the front. Elgin is a good sized city in Illinois. When you are going through there, be sure to stop by Alexanders Cafe! The waitress was kind and very sweet. She is quite a professional. Food- We had a large Julienne Salad, Patty Melt and the Pretzel /Beer Cheese appetizer. They were nice sized portions, fresh and very tasty. Our meal was about $31.00 with tax. Service - best service I've had in months. I travel for my job and eat out 150 evenings a year. Our server (Tom?) was attentive without intruding. I don't enjoy servers who seem bored or unhappy with their jobs. I also dislike the "Comedian/Clown" server as well. This guy was really good. Atmosphere - very clean and some nice visual elements. Went there today for breakfast with my Daughter. Never going back there ever again. Unfortunately I can't go any lower than 1 star Got seated, then it took over 5 mins for waitress to come to our table. Ordered the 2×3 breakfast. 2 eggs, hashbrown, bacon and toast. Asked that the hash browns to be a little crispy. They came out almost burned, it was real hard finishing them. The toast was so soft not hard like toast should be. Ever since the remodel I have found myself coming back. The place looks nice and the plating is great! I usually come at breakfast hours because they have an amazing breakfast selection. The employees are super nice and it's an enjoyable atmosphere for sure. The food is very tasty but I have found that they really like undercooking the veggies. My girlfriend had some slightly undercooked potato's, and unfortunately this isn't the first time it has happened.
