We loved working with Iris and Alex on our front yard update. Our hardscape needed to be updated and we wanted to take out our lawn. We requested a low maintenance yard that uses little water. We just completed a large landscaping project with Alexander Landscaping. Alex and Iris did an amazing job with our backyard conversion. We couldn't be happier with the finished product. It looks great and its construction is solid. They are both highly knowledgeable in their respective areas. Iris was great in helping us come up with a design that was both aesthetically pleasing to look at while also being functional for our family, which includes two active boys and a dog. Iris never rushed us on choosing a design but instead offered us several variations each time we met. Her final design hit both our visual goals and price point. When it was time to select plants, trees, rocks, etc., Iris gave us in-depth information on the pros and cons of each variety. Alex was incredible throughout the entire construction process. So we met with Alex a couple weeks ago to assess our horrid backyard that's been neglected and thrashed by our 75lb Shepherd mix. We made a great choice. After struggling on our own, trying to figure out what to do with our large, sloped, corner property, we reached out to Alex and Iris for help. We wanted to move away from the water-intensive English tea garden approach to a more California native and drought-tolerant style. So, after seeing a lot of the "Alexander's Landscaping" signs in our neighborhood, we called them. Alex came out, talked to us about our basic thoughts, and took measurements and photos. We knew by talking to him that he knows what he is doing, is familiar with the soil (and rocks) in the area, and takes great pride in his work. What we didn't know was that as part of the package we also got a professional landscape designer who is a wiz at choosing exactly the right plants, and entire layout, to totally transform our yard into an easy to keep up, always colorful, un-cluttered, drought-tolerant masterpiece. The plan was totally complete, included irrigation and lighting. I never got the feeling we were dealing with "contractors," if you know what I mean. They knew exactly how long everything would take, were very communicative, came when they said they would, got done a day or two early, and addressed every question/concern as if we were their favorite people in the world! My wife and I wholeheartedly recommend Alexander's Landscaping! About 10 years before hiring Alexander's, we had re-landscaped most of the backyard with a different company. We were quickly unhappy with the other company's choice of plants, the drip sprinkler lines soon were exposed, the low-voltage lighting was broken, and the grass they chose was too weak to ever take root. Enter Alexander's Landscaping. Alex and Iris came up with a plan to keep and reshape the best existing plants and replace the duds with drought-tolerant and very pretty shrubs. They replaced the existing blanketing drip lines with more efficient lines that targeted just the plants and trees we had. They fixed the low-voltage lighting and repositioned the lights to smarter locations. They also installed artificial turf where the grass used to be, and came up with creative solutions to solve some space and erosion issues that were caused by the prior landscaper. The previous landscaper had tried planting some vines on the side of our house where there isn't a lot of light, and those vines never ended up looking healthy. Alexander's picked the right plants for the location and now they're flourishing. Throughout the process we always felt like we were in good hands, and the finished result looks spectacular! Once the job was complete, they came up with a year-round watering plan, and walked through the entire job plant by plant to make sure we knew how to maintain them. Alexanders Landscaping finished my front garden exactly one month ago, just before Xmas. The transformation is amazing and I now enjoy looking at the new plants, flowers and trees every day; they are all settled and bursting into life thanks to the drip irrigation. My husband found Alexander's Landscaping while walking by a neighbor's house and admiring their front yard. Alex and Iris are both extremely friendly and easy to communicate with and happy to accommodate any change or suggestion we had for the design of our yard. Alex transformed our front yard, back yard, and made a back porch for us with paving stones. We also put in a large patch of imitation grass and the brand they use looks amazing. It's truly hard to tell it's not real grass. Alex worked so fast it was amazing to watch his daily progress. I couldn't believe how quickly and how carefully he completed the paving stone porch with retaining walls and steps. We have had our completed yard for over 1.5 years and everything is still doing great. The plants did wonderfully in the back yard right away but we did have a little trouble with plants in the front yard because we risked planting under a large oak tree and large pine tree. After one year, we asked Iris for some advice and she happily came out and spent time trimming and giving our little plants some professional tlc. And with some fertilizer the plants were much happier and grew beautifully. She taught me that our drought-tolerant, native plants need yearly trimming right before spring, and just a little tlc to keep them happy. We saw this company working up the street from us and loved what they did. I tried to find them on Yelp and was totally surprised more people hadn't written tons of reviews for them. It's really a lovely young German couple that run the business. Alex does all the work with his associate Hans. Aside from the fact that all three people are truly NICE, they did a great job. They finished earlier than projected, all within budget. I loved all the plant choices they made. We asked for something simple to maintain, drought tolerant and something to attract butterflies. We got all three. Alex installed a drip system with our existing timer. They dug out several inches of dirt so they could put a weed blocker underneath all the mulch and decomposed granite. I can't believe how many rocks they got out of our yard. They aren't a huge company that only want big jobs. I was impressed there was no scoffing at our budget. We are now just about two months out from the completion of our second project by Alex & Iris. Last Fall they took out about 3/4 of the grass in our front yard, in freezing cold or scorching hot Sunland, and replaced it with a beautiful mix of decomposed granite, California friendly plantings, rocks & a tree. We left the design to Iris and she did not disappoint! Her eye for color, size and design is incredible. We were so pleased and enjoyed the front so much that we decided to let them design a "secret garden" in our backyard that would keep in mind that we have three large dogs that would be hard on new plantings. We are delighted with the result, and so are the dogs who have their own patch of lawn preserved while we have our beautiful garden that is off limits to them unless we invite them in. ABC Eyewitness news featured our yard in a story on the DWP program promoting replacement of water thirsty lawns with drought tolerant plantings. (Televised 7/4/13) I would be the last one to ever want "desert landscaping" and we sure do not have that. We have beautiful trees, vines, flowers, shrubs, & rocks of various sizes and shapes. We have an arbor bench and an entry arch. Iris even took into account that one of our dogs likes to eat certain plants & flowers and we offered him a taste test before the final design was completed. The ones he finds tasty are behind the fencing so that he cannot help himself. I did not realize that drought tolerant & heat resistant could also be colorful, beautiful and very interesting to behold. We are enjoying the garden more than I ever imagined possible. Gardening is no longer just a chore, it is a pleasurable experience that we find immensely rewarding. We scoff at sprinklers running full blast while our drip system quietly does it's job so efficiently. We couldn't have asked for or expected a better experience than we got from Alex & Iris. Everything went as scheduled or we were notified of any minor delays or changes that needed to be made. There wasn't a single day that we weren't pleased with the progress that we saw. We wanted to replace our front lawn with a drought-tolerant garden, do something with our side yard that had formerly been a lawn before it had been trashed during the course a backyard/pool remodel last year, and add some elements to our backyard and around our newly remodeled pool. We had interviewed four major landscaping companies who had their own ideas (a dry creek bed in the front yard, anyone?) and outlandish bids. We had all but given up when I found a flyer for Alexander's Landscaping on our doorstep. At the risk of sounding repetitive, I warn you now that our experience mirrors Matt W's almost exactly. Alexander came over, listened to our thoughts, took with him a photo of a three-level vegetable planter that I had seen on Facebook, and took detailed measurements of the three yard areas. About a week later, Alex and Iris came over with detailed colored pencil sketches of their vision for the yard areas as well as a basket of greenery and blooms that we should expect from their proposed plantings. It was Iris' proposal for our side yard--a round stone seating area complete with fountain under our existing oak tree, a small lawn with meandering stones bordering it, and my vegetable planter surrounded by gravel--all complemented by a variety of plantings, that convinced us to hire Alexander and Iris. Their bid was extremely competitive considering that it including building an L-shaped fence to hide our newly exposed pool equipment, wooden doors to enclose a storage area, and the vegetable planter. Other landscapers would have had us hire sub-contractors ourselves to build the wooden structures. On the start date, Alexander showed up with all his equipment that enables him to do all of the work HIMSELF--no other workers!! Within a week, Alex had all of the old landscaping removed and hauled away. Then he systematically prepared each area for planting with fresh soil and weed cloth. Alex also installed a new sprinkler/drip system for the three areas of yard and consolidated the control of all those systems to one new central controller in the garage. As a result, most of our entire yard is automatically watered! In the meantime, Iris graciously met us at the store to help us choose an appropriate fountain. When it was time for planting each area, Iris came to help lay out the placement of the plants, and by the end of the day Alex had those plants in the ground. In our front yard, we now have a lovely berm with plantings and ground cover and lovely plantings along our front windows. Our side yard looks exactly as Iris sketched--an idyllic place to sit with a gurgling fountain nearby. In addition, because we had decided to get our oak trees trimmed before the project was implemented, Iris was able to modify the variety of plants when she realized there would be less shade there than she first thought. In our backyard, we have a new fence that hides the pool equipment, plantings along the back fence that will eventually block the neighbor's view of our pool area, my requested small grove of lemon, lime, and nectarine trees, and my formerly potted plumeria trees are flourishing along the pool. Alex and Iris were also able to recommend a contractor to replace our cracked asphalt driveway with a new paving stone driveway. Iris worked directly with the driveway contractor to pick an appropriate paving stone size, pattern, and color to enhance our yard/home/curb appeal and coordinated the timing of the driveway installation with their garden work. Alex also installed pathway lights that turn on at dusk by a sensor and are on a timer. Our project was estimated to take six weeks and it was finished early. Iris was able to recommend a gardener that she had already trained to manage a drought tolerant garden that they had installed previously. At the end of the project, Alex and Iris came over to meet with us and the gardener to go over the needed care of the garden. They also gave us a spread sheet describing the different watering stations, timing, and duration. We can not recommend Alex and Iris any higher. They are professional, knowledgeable, honest, so easy to work with and work within your budget. They certainly prove that installing a drought tolerant garden does not mean turning your front yard into a cactus garden. By the way, if you take "before and after" pictures and dimensions of a lawn that you are replacing, you local water district may be offering rebates. Alexander's Landscaping did an excellent job of completely re-landscaping the yard of my recently remodeled home. I am more than pleased with the resulting low maintenance, low water consumption and lovely looking plantings. Following the extensive remodeling of my home, I decided that the project needed to be completed by attacking the old, tired landscaping. I provided a sketch of my lot showing the house and the various areas to be landscaped indicating the type of planting and hardscaping that I desired. I also provided some photos of plants that I thought would complement the contemporary design of the house. Alexander's Landscaping responded with a much more detailed planting plan that included a water feature (fountain), new sprinkler systems, a small patio area and pleasing walkways that separate the planting areas. After a little negotiation, we agreed on a plan. Alex started the demolition of the old landscaping right on time and completed all the work ahead of schedule. The sprinkler system and plants that were installed were of high quality. The stone work was very well done. I was very pleased with the organization of the work, and the condition of the job site everyday. I interviewed a half dozen quality landscapers before choosing Alexander's Landscaping and I am very pleased with the new front and back yards they created for our home. I chose them over the others because I was impressed with their enthusiasm and reassured that they would be doing the work themselves rather than hiring day contractors. Also, they were among the most affordable of the firms I interviewed. Initially, I was concerned about the youth of the owners, Iris and Alex, but my concerns were unfounded; they are very experienced. Also, I know they specialize in xeriscaping and I wanted a lush, cottage garden to go with our traditional cottage house. But, they listened to my desires and created a beautiful cottage garden full of charm with the right touch of whimsy, just as I wanted. They managed to accomplish this while using drought tolerant plants appropriate for the climate. They also put considerable thought and effort into finding features for our yard that best fit the landscape design including our fountain, birdbath, ceramic plant pots, and attractive furniture.
