My wife and I wanted to beautify our front landscape (a little challenging given most of it is a hill slope). We also wanted to spruce up our backyard in advance of a backyard wedding! We wanted to redo our backyard and we knew nothing about landscaping, so we reached out to 3 companies like everyone recommends you do, to compare pricing and what they offer. While we found other companies were in a similar ballpark range for what we wanted, but we went with Artscape because of Ben's expertise. Like I said, we knew nothing so we really wanted some recs, thoughts, and opinions vs. just someone telling us "yes we can do that." Had a great experience working with Artscape Gardens on our front and back yard project. If you don't want to read my full review, a few words that come to mind when thinking of how to describe Ben and his team are communicative, strategic, value engineering, and detail oriented. Artscape Gardens gave our front yard a makeover, and replaced our existing backyard patio with new concrete as well as some additional concrete around the perimeter of the home. We have had some drainage issues in the rainy season every year since we first bought our home and it was time to get this project taken care of. I am a civil engineer, so I have an understanding of grading, drainage, construction costs, etc. but civil engineers are known for being practical. I sketched up our property with my ideas of what I was envisioning but I'm not a landscape architect nor do I have the knowledge to put together a planting plan with an awesome well thought out selection of plants that will compliment each other. We didn't see a need to pay for a landscape architect to draw up the planting plan once I got to talk with Ben. They can provide the service to draw up your plans for you if needed, but for an additional fee. Again... I'm practical. Ben emailed me a list of plants based after I mentioned I wanted something drought tolerant for the front and easy maintenance. I had proposed DG for a majority of the front yard because I like the low maintenance, and I like the organic look it gives with the right plants. Ben asked me to rate his list of plants on a scale of 1 to 10 to give him a clearer understanding our our likes and dislikes. From this he proposed a plant list with a cost estimate. It gave us a starting point to discuss the price, quantities, and plant selection. What completed the experience for me was when Ben shared video of his own backyard with me to show me how some of the same plants would look when matured and how they look when placed next to other colors. His backyard pictures actually inspired me to make some changes in the future to our own backyard. I would have included landscaping the backyard in the project for Ben and his team to do, but couldn't afford to keep adding scope to the project after all the concrete work we were having done. Ben communicated almost daily with updates. He is always available via phone call or text unless he's busy with another client. If Ben wasn't around, I could always speak directly to his foreman, Jose, with any questions or concerns during construction. Jose was a pleasure to work with as well. I would recommend Artscape Gardens to friends and family for sure. If we move in the future, and we need landscape work done in our next home I'll definitely reach out to them again. And I just want to add that since the project has been completed (2 days ago), several of our neighbors walking their dogs passing by have given us compliments on the new landscape. This review is a long time coming and now many months after their great work, we are still so thrilled with what Ben, Jose, and the team at Artscape Gardens were able to accomplish in transforming our backyard. As a starting point we had major root issues from a tree that was removed, mulch covering up a lot of surprises, shrubs from decades past, to end up with a spectacular, super clean, and minimal low maintenance yard with subtle ambient lighting around our perimeter. We bought a fixer upper in Eagle Rock 2 1/2 years ago, and have worked with numerous contractors and companies (i.e., roofers, electricians, plumbers, construction crews, etc.) on the remodel. It has been pretty nonstop the entire time, and we can confidently say that working with Ben and Oscar from Artscape Gardens was by far the most seamless and enjoyable company to work with. Together they make a dynamic duo and you feel at ease the entire time. There is also an incredible level of transparency you normally don't see with a company and its crew. You definitely feel like everyone is ALWAYS on the same page. Our project was pretty massive: demoing nearly 2000 sqft of concrete, grading the property because of the gentle slope, adding an additional step to the front, as well as a concrete landing pad by the studio. New drain, sprinkler, and drip systems were installed as well as Marathon I sod for a nice front yard. They added 30x30" stepping pavers, and 3x5' poured pavers. The poured pavers also have turf between them, as we intentionally decided not to have the sprinkler system there for future furniture. We'd recommend Artscape Gardens in a heartbeat. Their price is competitive, and you feel good about supporting a local company filled with good people. Ben is an artist (badass drummer by night!), and being an artist myself, it's nice to support someone who runs an extraordinary business by day.
