This review is just for the hot food being sold as I've not bothered with their groceries considering what is available in the area within a quarter mile. Like anything in hot hold for a while, everything gets significantly overcooked. So I tried it at various times to see if there was any difference. Not really. Everything is just overcooked. So maybe it's the style or it's the classic little family business that reheats everything to avoid waste. Of all the items I've tried so far, I can only say that the okra was the one item that surprised me. Everything else didn't make much of an impression but the okra was a Tyson uppercut in flavor. So maybe I'll just be back for that and ignore the several times I showed up early and food already pulled and "closed" for the night. read more

Absolutely loved my experience at Alex's Kitchen. It's a neighborhood Brazilian market with a buffet! The food was delicious and had a comforting, homey touch that's hard to find. Everything I tried tasted fresh and warm, and the staff were friendly, adding to the familial atmosphere. This time I ate before my camera, therefore I'll have to update my review with pictures later. However, I liked the ribs, the beef and potatoes, as well as the rice, beans and sweet plantains. Similar to other Brazilian restaurants, they charge per pound. Be careful not to over fill your container! I've been guilty of doing it before. The prices were reasonable for the quality and variety offered. They had a good selection that catered to different tastes and preferences. It's also super convenient for days when you need to grab a quick meal and you want something more wholesome than fast-food. Overall, it was a pleasant experience and I'll definitely come back. Oh my gosh, I love this place! The food is always so good and delicious. My husband and I have ordered take out from here about 4-5 times already and each time, it has been great. The food is always good and they give a lot of food: lot of rice, lot of meat, beans, etc. You can tell the food is made fresh too and not pre-made or microwaved like at other places. Our favorite dishes are the ones with steak/beef...pretty much you can't go wrong with any of those dishes with steak/beef. The pork/chicken dishes are not bad either, but my favorite has always been steak/beef dishes and the plantains. A side of plantains is definitely recommended. Service is awesome too! You can order online and write specific comments/requests re your order of you like. People that work there are very friendly too. When my husband and I went there to get food, the woman who I think is the owner gave us free canned drinks that she wanted us to try and said they are drinks from Brazil. It was pretty good. She always asked us if we need help bringing the food because we order a lot. Hehe Do not be discouraged as the place is very small and looks likes "a hole in the wall." Recommended for take-out! Without Yelp leading me here, I definitely would have never stopped by this part of Watertown and found this literal tiny little hole in a wall. Homey Brazilian food is the way to describe it, lots of options that I have no idea what they are, and huge portions for the price. Given that they cook all the meats etc to order, it does take a while to get the food, probably 15-20 min for ours. Unless you're set on dining in, I would probably call ahead for take out next time. SABOR DE MINAS: A mixed grilled plate essentially. Beef, chicken, sausage served with the traditional feijao tropeiro mix, plains and fries. The chorizo like sausage and the chicken were the best proteins. I'm not a huge bean fan, so the feijao tropeiro wasn't my favorite part. The fries are surprisingly good though. BIFE A CAVALO: Thin grilled beef that is served with an egg and feijao tropeiro. The beef is really what turned me off to this dish a bit. It was probably just way too overcooked and tough for me. Overall, a good stop for some Brazilian food. I do want to come back and try other things on the menu such as the stroganoff that everyone raves about. read more

This is my first visit to Alex's.. I had the lunch buffet, which was a nice mix of meat dishes, salads and other Brazilian specialties. The food was incredibly fresh and delicious. I do love Brazilian food, so I am a little biased. But I would make the case there is something for everyone at this place. There aren't many tables, so if there isn't a table for you you'll need to take your food with you. But believe me when I say the food here really is very high-quality. And the guys that work there and make the food are all from Brazil. One neat thing is they have a TV that is playing Brazilian news and sports. While we were the only ones who sitting down to eat here, we observed plenty of people picking up to-go orders at 9pm on a Friday night. We ordered the Churrasco na Tábua: sizzling steak, chicken, and sausage, served with fries, salad, beans and rice. Huge portion, enough for two. We also ordered a side of the Feijao Tropeira: yucca with bacon and egg. The flan was REALLY good, thick texture and fragrant milk flavoring. Almost ate all of it in one sitting. Mind you portions are huge too! Came with a large portion of rice and these awesome shoestring potato chips. My wife got the beef Brazil dish with veggies. Got food poisoning twice from here. Never had I gotten sick like I did after eating their food. First time I didn't know from where I got sick, only speculated. The second time I ordered from them and got sick a few hours later, then I knew it was them. The food was old tasting and stale. Looking at the reviews I can see I was not the only one to get sick. I hope the health department takes a look at them, give food poising to the wrong person and they could die. read more

I drove up to Alex's and still didn't see it until I got out of the car. Super small with BIG portions. $7.99 per lb self serve buffet. Be careful. I grabbed a takeout box that turned into just over $22 worth of food. Granted it will not go to waste. Just pace yourself if you do the buffet. I wish I found this place sooner! But with a name like Alex's, we never realized it as Brazilian food until about a year ago. We get take out about once a month here and it always hits the spot. My husband is a die hard feijoada fan and he savors every single bite of smoky deliciousness. For anyone who has not had feijoada, I would warn that there will be small bones here and there as it's a typical "leftovers/cheap meat cuts" dish. I've tried many dishes, but I come back to the moqueca the most. I'm pretty sure there's a whole fish (or maybe more) in one order. As everyone else has mentioned, the portion sizes are not to be fooled with. They are beyond generous! You can easily have 2-3 meals from each order. We always cook extra rice (although ours is never as tasty). I'm not that well versed on Brazilian, but I'm hoping to try my way thru their menu in the coming year. Pains me to do it but it's got to be done. Very few places fall from grace as fast as this one. Use to be great for ordering out from. Now it has totally changed. They have this buffet that sits outside for hours. If you call in an order they just walk to the buffet and take half or more of the food from there. Such a disappointing bife a cavalo last time we got this, the beef was clearly lukewarm and stale made many hours or days before. We also saw the guy taking 95% of our two orders from the dry cold buffet - the rice the beans the stale sausage and the salad all while charging twice the price of the buffet items. My husband and I live right around the corner and we're always excited to try new restaurants in the area. Alex's kitchen is a very cozy little nook that produces the absolute BEST Brazilian food you've ever had. We've ordered food for pick-up three times. The first two times we thought "Omg, this is delicious." The third time, we realized that they had tweaked the recipes just slightly, and to our delight we realized "Holy crap, it's EVEN BETTER!" Try the yuca and fried plantains (a must!) My husband most recently ordered Churrasco Brazuca Picanha (medium rare) and it was amazing - cooked to perfection and served with ridiculously good fries. I always get the same thing - Frango no Bafo - and it's the absolute best chicken stew with vegetables and rice. Chicken Stroganoff, Beef Stroganoff and Beef Brazil... Amazing tastes, with rice, potato sticks and beans. You'll be in heaven whether you sit in at one of the 8 seats or take it to go and enjoy it in your car. The staff all pitches in and educates you on the menu if you're a non Portuguese male that is bred to eat non ethnic food. I'll go out of my way to find this Watertown haunt again and again. The prices are reasonable and the portion sizes are gigantic (I usually make it into two meals). I'd recommend the Stroganoff for the Brazillian food. When they say hole in the wall, they are not kidding. Had a hard time figuring out the entrance because it's actually just a hole (door) in wall. But the food at the dinner a la carte serving was all great, though there aren't signs telling you what things are so I'm not entirely sure what I ate, other than that it was delicious and satisfying. Good mix of tender meats and vegetables. It's not a buffet - you pay for the weighed food on your plate - and you can also order from the menu. The burger my husband got was gigantic. The Brazil Express was tasty, with an unreasonably large amount of food that I made three meals out of -- and I eat a lot. I like to be adventurous with food now and then, and the Canjiquinha sounded interesting. But I found the texture to be super weird. Gringos beware... The BLT Sub was gross.
