Thank you, Muqueca, for warming me up. Fish with Shrimp Moqueca: Made in the Capixaba recipe, this version replaced red palm oil and coconut milkthem with tomatoes--which happened to be my favorite. The broth was warm, flavorful, and refreshing. The initial notes are the sweetness of onions and bell peppers, followed by the delicate aroma of cilantro, leaving a clean taste impression. The whitefish fillets are tender and flavorful, yet still retain a subtle chewiness. The Pirão sauce, made with the fish broth and tapioca starch, was rich and thick, enhancing both the saltiness and umami, even reminiscent of Cantonese style abalone sauce. The two flavors were distinct yet complementary, a true delight with rice--though fresh, higher-quality Thai jasmine rice would be better. The earthenware pot, bearing the marks of time, kept the food warm; the portion was also very generous, perfect for sharing. I ended up taking some home for a second meal. Flan: Although I was quite full, the deliciousness of the moqueca piqued my interest in trying dessert. The pudding had a smooth and delicate texture, unlike the often sticky flaky texture of supermarket flans. The egg flavor wasn't strong, while the caramel syrup was rich and smooth, with an irresistible initial bitterness followed by a delightful sweetness. Plus, the syrup was generous, making it wonderful to coat every slice of cake in it. No wonder it's their signature dessert. Hot Sauce: The homemade hot sauce was highly recommended by my server. It didn't look very spicy, but it was far beyond my tolerance. However, I must admit it was incredibly delicious, with a refreshing citrus flavor and a smooth, emulsified texture alongside the spiciness, creating a very rich flavor profile. Being unable to handle spice is a real shame in its presence. The last time I visited Muqueca was years ago so it was time to visit again. Street parking was easy and free after 6 PM. They don't take reservations but although they had many customers, we were seated right away. Our server was a very pleasant person and provided suggestions and checked-in with us during our visit. From my last visit, I recalled that their juices were delicious. I went with the blue passion and I loved it - blueberries, mango and passion fruit. We started with the Brazilian cod patties and they were really good. I was informed the sauce was very hot so I didn't try it. My main course was the moqueca completa with mussels, shrimp and fish. I was offered the upgraded moqueca with a different sauce that included coconut milk for an extra charge but I passed this time. My meal was absolutely delicious!!! portion is large so I had leftovers for lunch the next day. Next time, I'll order the shrimp and fish moqueca and try the other sauce to taste the difference. I went to Muqueca around 5:30ish and it was still fairly empty, so we got seated right away. We must have made it just in time, because by 6 the restaurant was packed! The place has a cozy, homey vibe perfect for easing into a slow evening over good food and strong drinks. We started with the fried yuca, and it was perfect. Fried and crunchy without being overcooked or overly starchy. It had just the right texture and flavor to keep you reaching for one more piece. To drink, I had a passion fruit caipirinha, which was sweet, refreshing, and strong. One was all I needed. I was definitely feeling happy after that. For our mains, we shared the Muqueca and the Feijoada. Both were great, but if I had to choose, the Feijoada stole the show. The mix of dried meat, pork, sausage, and bacon simmered in the bean stew was rich, hearty, and deeply satisfying. It paired perfectly with the side of white rice and sweet plantains. The Muqueca was also delicious. We had the one with fish and shrimp, and while both were good, we found ourselves leaning more toward the shrimp. Next time, I might try the shrimp and mussels version or just shrimp instead. Service was wonderful, our server was warm and friendly throughout. The only tiny miss was that we asked for water and it never came, but honestly, that's a minor detail in an otherwise perfect meal. All in all, I highly recommend Muqueca. Really good Brazilian food in Inman square. Went on a Friday after work without a reservation and we were sat quickly. This place can get busy though so we were happy to have found the place not too busy. The only qualm I have is they don't have menus and you have to scan a QR code. My boyfriend was having trouble with the QR code and wasn't able to see the menu. The interior is very friendly and welcoming. The service was slow at first but then picked up! They have a pitcher sangria option which I definitely recommend and for $28! Got their yuca and Portuguese sausage as a starter which was so delicious. When we got our food we noticed it was probably best to share one plate but we love leftovers! I got their Feijoada which came with rice and plantains on the side. The dish was beans, sausage, and dried meat. Very flavorful! My boyfriend got the fish, shrimp, and mussels muqueca with coconut milk and a side of rice. Came here for a special night, given the reviews this was the perfect place to celebrate! Walking in, the restaurant is small but nicely laid out. Plenty of seats to wait near the bar but was fortunate that there was no wait on a Saturday Night. Our server brought us to our table and gave us plenty of time to decide what we wanted to eat and drink. Started with a Passion Blue juice and Cod Patties. The accompanying hot sauce which came with the appetizer is no joke! I have a high tolerance for spice and a little goes a LONG way. It's a short lived spice and the Passion Blue was the perfect remedy to put out the fire! The cod patties themselves were nicely crispy and had a nice amount of fish, beware if you don't like "fishy" tasting things as there is no doubt left on what you are eating. For dinner I elected to try the Seafood Pie. This was nicely presented in the traditional clay pots and was piping hot. Again, you'd better like the taste of "fishy" things as the cod was there as well as crab, muscles, and shrimp. Good flavor and well spiced however came off more like a seafood stuffing. Like upgraded fish sticks. -Feijoada (4.5/5): The fried plantain was the best part of this dish. Heck, order a few of those separately! Otherwise, this was really enjoyed but quite heavy on beans. Considering I live in the area, I really had no excuse for waiting so long to check this place out! There's a bunch of Portuguese on Cambridge Street, but this spot is actually Brazilian. Despite coming on a Sunday night, it was actually pretty busy, so that's always a good sign! The decor was fairly nice, without being overly upscale. To start, we shared the Brazilian Patties. They came in either cod or chicken, so we tried both, and I preferred the cod. For the main course, we split the Moqueca, which was delicious! If you're into fish, this is the way to go. Definitely get the option with the most seafood in it. My only complaint was that the dish was a bit salty for my liking, but I absolutely loved the unique flavor. An unassuming restaurant at the end of Inman Square stretch of shops and restaurants. Named after their clay pot soup, the restaurant was warm and inviting. Operated by friendly staff, the restaurant was decorated with an assortment of warm feeling colors and wood giving it a homey feel. The seats were full at 830pm and we had to wait 15 minutes to get a table. Fried Plantains - Sweet, caramelized, mushy plantains. Some had crispy edges, I just wished that there was a little crispier to the edges giving the plantains a bit more caramelization and contrast. Still very good. Fried Diced Chicken Bone In - Mostly dark meat but was getting close to very done. It was seasoned properly and so it was tasty. It came with its own creamy sauce which was okay, but much preferred to put on the salsa like thing from the Moquueca. This felt similar to the chicharrones where they over fry the pork belly (chicken in this case). Fish, Shrimp and Mussels Moqueca - The star of the night was the moqueca. Seafood stone bowl soup served with a side of rice and some salsa looking side. The soup had plenty of seafood and vegetables. The tomato and onions were a pleasant accompaniment to the seafood and was a solid base to add seafood to. The salsa was also in a stone bowl. It had a bit tanginess to it and when eaten with the soup, had good contrast in flavor. The salsa was also good on the fried chicken, give it some hydration to help with the dryness and sourness to combat the fried portion. I'm angry at myself for not discovering Muqueca and their lasagna de banana sooner! This restaurant is going on my list of favorite restaurants. I never had moqueca before so I wanted to try it. I ordered the fish moqueca ($18.95 Uber eats). It came with two takeout boxes of rice and a small takeout bowl of fish gravy. The stew had a tomato base with lots of chopped onions and tomatoes. The takeout container was not as impressive as the stone bowls one would get in the restaurant, but the stew was delicious! They gave very generous pieces of fish. I wasn't sure how to properly eat the fish gravy but I had it with the rice, and it was awesome. The rice is very fragrant (tasted like they cooked it with garlic?) and lightly salted so I could honestly eat it on its own. The stew wasn't that big, but with all the rice it could definitely be split between 2 people. Their fried yucca ($6.95) is popular for a reason!!! I couldn't stop eating it. Each piece was so perfectly fried with a super crispy exterior and a fluffy interior. The flavor was awesome. I didn't care too much for the creamy garlicky sauce but it did go well with the yucca. If you like sweet plantains and cheese, you MUST get their lasagna de banana/plantain lasagna ($13.95). The container was full of deliciously fried sweet plantains bathed in a creamy, cheesy sauce. My mouth is watering thinking about it. The touch of oregano they add takes the flavor profile to the next level. The food was good and reasonably priced. We ordered the 1 1/2 Muqueca Bahiana dish, which was enough for 2 people. I would suggest getting a side of rice because the portion size is small. The dish is a healthier, gourmet version of the traditional Brazilian muqueca Bahiana. While it's not as authentic and flavorful as the original, the ingredients are of high quality, especially the fish and shrimp. I highly recommend trying their fresh juices. Although it was our first time at the restaurant, the service felt rushed, and we weren't given much guidance about the menu. The waitress also didn't check on us much, and it was hard to get her attention for the check. We were surprised to find that an 18% gratuity was included in the bill, as this wasn't mentioned on the menu. The food at Muqueca was absolutely amazing!! We ordered the Fish Moqueca and the Mariscada and honestly fell in love with both! The rich, flavorful broth pairs so well with the seafood and rice... they're both delicious dishes that are so perfect on a chilly Boston night. Their dishes are served in clay pots which makes for a fun presentation. They also have a wide selection of fruit smoothies which we really enjoyed. The service was wonderful as well. Our waitress was so friendly and super attentive while making sure we always had everything we needed. Muqueca has a casual vibe with a family-owned feel. You really feel welcomed when you walk in. We will definitely be returning to try more dishes! read more
