Thank you, Muqueca, for warming me up. Fish with Shrimp Moqueca: Made in the Capixaba recipe, this version replaced red palm oil and coconut milkthem with tomatoes--which happened to be my favorite. The broth was warm, flavorful, and refreshing. The initial notes are the sweetness of onions and bell peppers, followed by the delicate aroma of cilantro, leaving a clean taste impression. The whitefish fillets are tender and flavorful, yet still retain a subtle chewiness. The Pirão sauce, made with the fish broth and tapioca starch, was rich and thick, enhancing both the saltiness and umami, even reminiscent of Cantonese style abalone sauce. The two flavors were distinct yet complementary, a true delight with rice--though fresh, higher-quality Thai jasmine rice would be better. The earthenware pot, bearing the marks of time, kept the food warm; the portion was also very generous, perfect for sharing. I ended up taking some home for a second meal. Flan: Although I was quite full, the deliciousness of the moqueca piqued my interest in trying dessert. The pudding had a smooth and delicate texture, unlike the often sticky flaky texture of supermarket flans. The egg flavor wasn't strong, while the caramel syrup was rich and smooth, with an irresistible initial bitterness followed by a delightful sweetness. Plus, the syrup was generous, making it wonderful to coat every slice of cake in it. No wonder it's their signature dessert. Hot Sauce: The homemade hot sauce was highly recommended by my server. It didn't look very spicy, but it was far beyond my tolerance. However, I must admit it was incredibly delicious, with a refreshing citrus flavor and a smooth, emulsified texture alongside the spiciness, creating a very rich flavor profile. Being unable to handle spice is a real shame in its presence. The last time I visited Muqueca was years ago so it was time to visit again. Street parking was easy and free after 6 PM. They don't take reservations but although they had many customers, we were seated right away. Our server was a very pleasant person and provided suggestions and checked-in with us during our visit. From my last visit, I recalled that their juices were delicious. I went with the blue passion and I loved it - blueberries, mango and passion fruit. We started with the Brazilian cod patties and they were really good. I was informed the sauce was very hot so I didn't try it. My main course was the moqueca completa with mussels, shrimp and fish. I was offered the upgraded moqueca with a different sauce that included coconut milk for an extra charge but I passed this time. My meal was absolutely delicious!!! portion is large so I had leftovers for lunch the next day. Next time, I'll order the shrimp and fish moqueca and try the other sauce to taste the difference. I went to Muqueca around 5:30ish and it was still fairly empty, so we got seated right away. We must have made it just in time, because by 6 the restaurant was packed! Fried and crunchy without being overcooked or overly starchy. It had just the right texture and flavor to keep you reaching for one more piece. To drink, I had a passion fruit caipirinha, which was sweet, refreshing, and strong. One was all I needed. I was definitely feeling happy after that. For our mains, we shared the Muqueca and the Feijoada. Both were great, but if I had to choose, the Feijoada stole the show. The mix of dried meat, pork, sausage, and bacon simmered in the bean stew was rich, hearty, and deeply satisfying. It paired perfectly with the side of white rice and sweet plantains. The Muqueca was also delicious. We had the one with fish and shrimp, and while both were good, we found ourselves leaning more toward the shrimp. Next time, I might try the shrimp and mussels version or just shrimp instead. Service was wonderful, our server was warm and friendly throughout. Like upgraded fish sticks. -Feijoada (4.5/5): The fried plantain was the best part of this dish. Heck, order a few of those separately! Otherwise, this was really enjoyed but quite heavy on beans. An unassuming restaurant at the end of Inman Square stretch of shops and restaurants. Named after their clay pot soup, the restaurant was warm and inviting. The seats were full at 830pm and we had to wait 15 minutes to get a table. Fried Plantains - Sweet, caramelized, mushy plantains. Some had crispy edges, I just wished that there was a little crispier to the edges giving the plantains a bit more caramelization and contrast. Still very good. Fried Diced Chicken Bone In - Mostly dark meat but was getting close to very done. It was seasoned properly and so it was tasty. It came with its own creamy sauce which was okay, but much preferred to put on the salsa like thing from the Moquueca. This felt similar to the chicharrones where they over fry the pork belly (chicken in this case). Fish, Shrimp and Mussels Moqueca - The star of the night was the moqueca. Seafood stone bowl soup served with a side of rice and some salsa looking side. The soup had plenty of seafood and vegetables. The tomato and onions were a pleasant accompaniment to the seafood and was a solid base to add seafood to. The salsa was also in a stone bowl. It had a bit tanginess to it and when eaten with the soup, had good contrast in flavor. The salsa was also good on the fried chicken, give it some hydration to help with the dryness and sourness to combat the fried portion. The service is whatever they don't have no urgency especially if you're black and they don't even give you the correct menus. I'm angry at myself for not discovering Muqueca and their lasagna de banana sooner! This restaurant is going on my list of favorite restaurants. I never had moqueca before so I wanted to try it. I ordered the fish moqueca ($18.95 Uber eats). It came with two takeout boxes of rice and a small takeout bowl of fish gravy. The stew had a tomato base with lots of chopped onions and tomatoes. The takeout container was not as impressive as the stone bowls one would get in the restaurant, but the stew was delicious! They gave very generous pieces of fish. I wasn't sure how to properly eat the fish gravy but I had it with the rice, and it was awesome. The rice is very fragrant (tasted like they cooked it with garlic?) and lightly salted so I could honestly eat it on its own. The stew wasn't that big, but with all the rice it could definitely be split between 2 people. Their fried yucca ($6.95) is popular for a reason!!! I couldn't stop eating it. Each piece was so perfectly fried with a super crispy exterior and a fluffy interior. The flavor was awesome. I didn't care too much for the creamy garlicky sauce but it did go well with the yucca. If you like sweet plantains and cheese, you MUST get their lasagna de banana/plantain lasagna ($13.95). The container was full of deliciously fried sweet plantains bathed in a creamy, cheesy sauce. My mouth is watering thinking about it. The touch of oregano they add takes the flavor profile to the next level. Came here on a weekday night and this place was still bumping! We started off with the classic fries Hucca. The yucca came with a spicy hot sauce which complimented the yucca well. The yucca was crisp on the outside and very soft and crumbly on the inside - fried to perfection. For my main, I got their specialty - Fish Moqueca and my friend got a Fish and Shrimp Moqueca. I came with a fish curry, rice and another fish gravy. This was my first time trying Moqueca so I did not know what to expect. The fish was cooked perfectly. It had not dissolved or disinterested into pieces. The additional fish gravy was not as good as the bowl of the Moqueca. Will definitely be back to try some other items! read more
