We made a takeout order on our phone and it took 15 minutes for the food to be ready. We ordered a 3-piece fish and chips meal and a 1/2 pint of clam chowder. The meal came with a coleslaw and I asked for tartar sauce. I didn't like the coleslaw because the sauce tasted a little sour. The fries were a little bland and not crispy either. The fish itself was good. I do wish the coating it was fried in was more seasoned because when I bit into it, it was cooked well but not a lot of flavor. The clam chowder was good. It was creamy and the vegetables were cooked well. They were tender but not too soft or mushy. We both liked the hush puppies because they were crisp on the outside but soft and moist on the inside. Totally disappointed... we went a few weeks back. Silly but we were most looking forward to trying the coleslaw with cucumbers and wasabi. I can't even tell you how disappointing it was. It was the tiniest little container for three dollars. When I say tiny, I mean the size that they put to go condiments in. There was no cucumbers and zero wasabi flavor. Think child size ice cream cup. The menu says it's homemade clam chowder.... It was very underwhelming. The atmosphere is very cute in this place, the beers on top seem like they might be appealing if you drink. Lol... the food is nothing to speak about and extremely overpriced. Even the french fries taste like they are out of a bag. I hate writing bad reviews. But if I can save someone going in for a quick bite, spending well over $50 for just that and receiving what is seemingly frozen food you can easily make it home. Yesterday we chose to celebrate Valentine's Day at Alfie's with our usual order. However, when we received our orders, the fish n chips were saturated in oil! Found the place through Yelp and so glad I did. I went with the two piece fish and chips. You get two 3 oz pieces of fried fish, fries, and hush puppies. They also put some of the fried batter that falls off the fish when frying. They had three different kinds of malt vinegar which was interesting. Stopped by with my family to grab a late lunch. I didn't know what "hushpuppies" were, so I asked the guy. And he gave me not only a detailed description but 2 free samples of these "hushpuppies." We chatted a little bit, and I found he was the owner of the place. He said the restaurant was around since the 1960s, and he loved this town (Lompoc.) I saw this place featured on the local news, so I had to try it out. I thought it was certainly fine, but definitely overrated. The service is counter style, so you order at the counter, find yourself a place to sit and and they let you know when order is ready. They may offer the most authentic English Fish and Chips, but I certainly have had much better elsewhere. The fried fish was very crispy, but not necessarily the tastiest. The fries were also very crispy, but seemed to have the texture of being previously frozen. I ordered the two pieces of fish and chips which goes for $12.79. It's served on a bed of deep fried shredded onions which I've not seen anywhere else. I didn't find this particularly appetizing and perhaps that's what makes it so authentic. This gives the basket the appearance of looking much fuller. Personally, I'd rather they offered more chips to fill the basket. read more

Last night I had one of the finest seafood casual dining experiences at Alfie's. I am on a week-long business trip for training and staying at a local Embassy Suites in Lompoc. After a long day of work, I was feeling some fish and chips calling my name and chose Alfie's for its proximity and easy-to-find location. From the street, the place has a curb appeal and looks and feels like a nice and fun place to eat. There was no second guessing myself after walking through the front door. The smell of delicious seafood enticed all my senses. The place is well-themed with beautiful décor inside and plenty of seating for dining couple, families, or large groups. The gentleman at the front counter made excellent, knowledgeable dinner suggestions to me based on my preferences he inquired to know before I made an order. I spent just over $50 (including a tip for the nice counter guy) and settled on a Clam Chowder with a Bread bowl, Cajun Catfish Combo with Shoestring fries, an order of Calamari and four Jumbo Shrimp Side entrées. I was offered containers to take ketchup, lemons and other items from the self-serve condiment counter while waiting for my order. When my order was ready the presentation was beautiful. The items were individually properly and neatly packaged in a large bag for take-out. The bag smelled so good and special that I strapped it in my front passenger seat as if it were a child. When I got to the hotel down the road, I unpacked the food on the table and dived in. The food was still hot (as if it were fresh out of the kitchen) and I enjoyed the best dinner ever. The clam chowder was full of flavor; creamy and chunky with just the right amount of crunch with the added oyster crackers. The bread bowl was warm inside with a crispy outer crust. (They even gave me the gluten-doughy-center core from the bread bowl, which I loved!) The Jumbo Shrimp was perfectly seasoned and crispy. The calamari was excellent. The catfish was perfect-- juicy with the perfect amount of herbs and spices and crunch. The meal was enough for two people, but I binged, and the post-meal coma made me feel like a king for the rest of the night. Before this week is over I am coming back for more. I'm from Arizona and not used to paying nearly as much here for food, but it was still a good meal. 40$ for a shared "full" seafood combo meal with 2 beers without the tip. We split the two piece complete and it was perfect with the drink that came with the lunch special basket. All fountain drinks come with free refills and that is always great! Our food came out piping hot and it was so good! The fish was crispy and juicy, the fries where hot and crispy and the hush puppy balls were also great ( I didn't know but the hush puppies are kind of like a corn bread ball that's fried, crispy on the outside and soft cornbready on the inside .
