Hubby took his parents to this tour last November while they were in town, visiting from WA. Dad is 90 yrs and mom is 84 yrs. they all loved this tour. So I took my grandsons, 8 yrs and 5 yrs. When we got there, I realized they accepted CASH ONLY. Went to Kualoa Ranch (1 mile away) to use their ATM. Got back in time for the tour. Needless to say, I thought I would get attitude from my 8 yr old. He's a gamer and would rather be on his DS or iPad. But he LOVED it. Even I was a bit skeptical but from the time we boarded the bus, the comedy began. Surprisingly, half our group was local. The other half, visitors from Wisconsin and Arizona. We all had a great time. Great tour of the farm and the various trees and plants. Didn't know it was a film location for so many movies. And the fire dance was up close. Lessons on making fire and husking a coconut were so interesting. Got to taste fresh coconut. All the while, the jokes kept coming, non-stop. It was time well spent. Highly recommend this tour for locals and visitors. But don't forget to bring cash. $20 Adults, ($15 kamaaina) and $10 for kids. Note, they used to have an ATM there but it was stolen. I read about this tour over our morning coffee, and we called to see if they had room for us to join a tour that afternoon. The lady said they would, but that it would leave in 90 min. We grabbed our stuff and jumped in the car. The drive out there was gorgeous. We arrived early so we sampled some of the macadamia nuts (more on that in another review) The guide introduced himself and we boarded the open air tour bus. He was charming and quite the comedian. We were taken around the farm and were taught various things along the way. Highlights: fire baton twirling, learning how to crack open a coconut and drinking the fresh juice, and being crowned with keepsake head dresses. The Ali'i tour is a must stop for any friends or family visiting me in Hawaii. It's the closest thing I can find that showcases as much of Hawaii in one place and time that I can find. During the tour, entertaining and knowledgable guides take you on an old bus around land near the famous Kualoa Mountain, Ranch, and Moli'i fishpond. You learn about native crops, culture, and how people interact with the land. There is a show with firemaking, coconut husking, dancing, and gifts for the guests. There are some famous movie sets located on the route of the tour and on the ranch, which are described by the guides as well. By far the best part of the tour is the guides. They are hilarious! Yes you learn all the great things I mentioned above, but I always laugh the whole time. If you only have time to do one thing while you are on Oahu, make it the Ali'i tour. read more

Traditional methods on opening a coconut, a short canoe ride near secret island and an informative bus ride. You even get a small souvenir and apple banana included. We had the absolute best time here!!! At first I wasn't sure if I wanted to spend the money to do the tour because we wrongfully assumed it was just a drive through the fields. Boy were we wrong!!! We have been in Hawaii almost a week now and this was the first time I was overwhelmed almost to the point of tears just in appreaction for the culture and those who give us the honor of having it shared with us. It was amazing to have shared this time with the amazing people at the farm and truly felt like Ohana. Not only was it interactive and hilarious!!! But the infornation being shared and the love and respect shown for land and culture has made this experience one of our very favorites!!!! We learned all about the "tree of life" and just how essential cocnuts are to life on the island (providing a whole new respect for them) as well as fire demonstrations, and so much more! read more

Definitley 5 stars!! This is a must see n do! It is one lf Oahu's hidden treasures of fun. The Alii tour is located on the same property as thr Tropical Farm...and seriously I had driven by this places countless times until someone reccommended it to me about 5 years ago. Based on the glowing double thumbs up pumping fists in the air reccomendation...my friends and I decided to give it a try. I have now become a regular! I have brought many family and friends here. And have later been told that this was one of the highlights of their trip. The cost is extremely reasonable less than $20. You will get a guided tour that takes you around the farm (doesnt sound fun...but it IS!) The tour guides are literally comedians. I believe that some participate in the comedy show Laughing Samoans. During some of the tours the driver may pick flowers or fruits. One time the driver actually climbed a star fruit tree then cut the fruit for us to sample. During the tour, you may see a fire dancer and be so close that you can feel the heat from the flames. Your tour will take you on a small boat ride where you will see the beautiful Koolau mountains. As well as Giligans Island, places where they filmed episodes of Fantasy Island (the part where the guy goes on the pier and shouts The Plane) part of where some of Jurassic Park, 50 First Dates, and episodes of the TV shows LOST and ER were filmed. This is a must see and do. Each time that I have been here the tour is slightly different. Since it is sort of a comedy routine the tour guides feed off of the crowds reactions. I am also always highly impressed with the way the tour guides handle themselves. They have a photographer who takes group photos several times...of which yiu can of course purchase at the end of the tour. I did not expect this tour to be so much fun. You get a tour of the farm and a quick show from the tour guide. Not only was it interesting, but our tour guide was very funny and entertaining. They allowed us to smell the fruit, explain what seasons what fruits are available and provide the history of the plants. When you get to the site, you can crack fresh macadamia nuts and eat it. You just have to be careful of the wild chickens running around because they wait to eat the macadamia nut as you crack it open. Fair warning that you need to bring cash to pay for the tour and you buy it on site. I would recommend this tour to others. The day we went was too gloomy to go to the beach so this was a nice alternative. read more

This tour was fantastic! For a fraction of the other "hawaiian experience" tours/exhibits, you get a real sense of the islands in a more intimate setting. You'll see (and get samples of) fruits, flowers and plants. They do a fire show, a coconut example, and a super fun boat tour around this giant fish pond (lake) that is used for tons of film locations. The best thing is how low key and "authentic" it feels, rather than some giant stage show. When we went, we were there for the last tour of the day, and it ended up only being the four of us on the tour! We met chief Soho at the Polynesian Cultural Center when he did a show there, then saw him again the next year with Chief Sielu at the Ali'i Tour when they had just opened. We've been back and brought friends every year since. Fabulous tour and the show is always fresh! Many new faces over the years - Tama helped us out this year with a great intro when my nephew proposed to his girlfriend, and brought them both up on stage. It was truly an unforgettable event. An agricultural, historical tour with a touch of comedy. My friend really wanted to do this tour so we did the trek up to Kaawa from Honolulu. The best way to spot this place is to look for the American flags and Macadamia Nut Farm as your guide posts. My friend and I arrived a little before 2pm but they were only running shows every 2 hours So we hung out people watching - lots of Japanese tourists I also ate a ton of free macadamia nuts in the store. There was also a bit of shopping to be had, but was saving that for the Aloha Stadium Swap Meet. So we got to meet the Chief, he signed my friend and I up for the 3pm tour and gave us a discount since we apparently were the only ones there, The other tribal team kept referring to us as the "VIP Tour" I think the Chief thought my friend and I were cute so we weren't complaining Tomo was our guide - he was knowledgeable and friendly and very funny. Teaching us Hawaiian words and peppering them with silly American euphemisms. We got in an old bus (engine was started with pliers) and we toured the grounds to see all the plants, fresh fruit and nuts grown on the land. Hollywood loves these lands as Lost, Gilligan's Island, 50 First Dates, Fantasy Island, Here comes Polly and a few others were shot on the land, If you look up at the towering lush mountain range - you definitely see yourself as a Castaway on Lost. We then jumped on a large barge and toured the man-made lake that King Kamehameha had built by his warriors so they could sustain their people. Very impressive when you consider this was built over 800 years ago. We headed back to the village where Tomo showed us how to create fire (Tom Hanks was doing it all wrong) and showed us how to open a coconut The coconut was so fresh and delicious. My friend who normally does not like coconut loved it So did the chicken and birds who gathered around to eat the scraps. Tomo joked that they were creating "Coconut Chicken" no marinating needed! We also had headbands created for us made out of the long leaf used often used for cooking Finally, the Chief invited my friend and I to join him for a type of tea drink and gave us some bananas We felt so honored! The store was incredible but the tour was the jewel here. We were lucky enough to get the last "jungle adventure" for the day at 3:00 PM. It was about 1.5 hours (maybe 2) filled with laughter, learning and fun. The tour guide made it the best thing we did in our week on the island. My kids, 13 and 18, also loved it. We even got to taste a bit of the fresh fruit from the farms. It's part old bus, part boat (on a very calm lake) and part small outdoor theater. The tour is not well advertised. You sign up behind the store. The store was really good too. Free tasting of flavored mac nuts. My favorite was the Kona Coffee Glazed flavor. The next thing really surprised me. I don't drink coffee. I've never really liked it. I tried some of their mac nut coffee because...well...because it was free. I ended up buying some it was sooo good. Plenty of parking, lots of chickens, you can crack open your own mac nuts, great tour and store. read more

What a fun tour! I came here with Field trip friends as one of the places to tour to learn how our ancestors worked off the land and utilized natural resources. We got a tour of all of the different plants first and then had a fire dance demonstration which was so fun for my daughter, with a fire starting demonstration and got to try real coconut and grade the coconut with a stick!! The chickens love the coconut and are always right on time for the extra gratings. They also gave us and our little ones a haku made out of coconut leaves. My daughter loved it and always says "aloha" When she puts it on. We ended the tour with a bus ride through the property overlooking the fish pond and passing through some famous scenic places and learning more about the different plants. Apparently they don't do the fish pond tour with this tour anymore? or maybe for that time being...but we got to crack macadamia nuts with rocks and eat them! My daughter loved doing that too. This tour is the best kept secret on the island of Oahu. You have to go. $20 per person, cash only. When you get to Tropical Farms, walk through the shop, then go to the left to pay and sign up for the tour. Words cannot even describe how enjoyable, hilarious, and educational (yes!) this tour is. Also - the Chief mentioned that they have a luau here on Tuesday evenings. We weren't around on a Tuesday, but I imagine it would be a fabulous, non-commercial luau. If someone has gone, I would love to hear about it. You start out being driven on an old green bus through part of the farm to a separate location down by the water. If you're lucky, the Chief will drive you and you will be heartily entertained for the entire trip. The Chief is hilarious and had our entire bus laughing the whole way. The demonstration is fascinating and includes fire starting, fire throwing, coconut husking and tasting, and lots of chickens. After the show/demonstration, you take a pleasant boat tour of the fishpond with the beautiful Pali as a backdrop. On the way back, the bus goes through a different part of the farm, where the Chief will stop and let you pick various fruits in season. When you return, go back to the shop and sample all of the delicious flavored mac nuts and the kona coffee. Also, there is a great pearl shop out the side of the mac nut store. They have wonderful jewelry there for great prices. My review isn't very exciting, but trust me, this tour is. It is so worth it. Our entire party, ranging in age from 11 - 80, was laughing almost the entire time and put it on their top 3 list of best times on the island. read more

One at the coconut hut and another on the pond with the Koolau Range as the backdrop. Tour is located on Tropical Farms aka Mac Nut Farm. The tour is roughly an hour and the guides give you a brief but very descriptive insight on to island life and the regional history. The guides keep it light with a ton of corny and awesome one-liner jokes. I'll save those jokes for the guide. If you're traveling up the Eastern Oahu, catch the 11AM tour, it's the first tour of the day. Tuesday is limited to 1 tour at 1045, probably to prep for their Fia-Fia Luau at Marriot's Ko Olina Beach Club. When we come back with people new to Hawaii, this will be a must stop. read more

People often confuse Tropical Farms w/ Alii Tours - they occupy the same area but are two separate entities. This is definitely worth a stop if you are traversing the East side of the island. Stop in to Tropical Farms for free macadamia nut coffee and an array of macadamia nuts. Then exit through the back where you will see a shoddy sign with paint saying 'Ali'i Tour'. Someone will help you there - adults regardless of age is $20. The tour itself is about 75minutes - they simply take you in a broken down bus, show you a few plants, then teach you a few things about coconuts, culture, and the islands etc. The main attraction is Chief Seilu (there is a picture of him hanging on the wall w/ President Obama); he makes the tour very enjoyable - he's like your own personal comedian, very gregarious and entertaining. Chief Seilu and his group also run the Fia Fia Luau; you can get more information from them onsite. Part of the tour is also a short boat ride into a man made lake, you also drive by where they filmed 50 First Dates and a bunch of other TV shows and movies. Overall a very positive experience (and depending on time of you, you also get to eat fresh fruit - we were able to pluck star fruit straight from the trees and bite right into them)... We had one day left in the area to do some sight-seeing. Had to find something that I would enjoy as well as my parents, aunt, and 90-yr old grandfather would enjoy. It's a lot more difficult that it sounds! My cousin that used to live in the area would bring all her visiting friends and family here instead of paying a ton of money for the Polynesian Cultural Center (which is super fun, but way too expensive after going once or twice). My parents had already gone, but were willing to go again (a good sign!). We were 10 mins late for the tour but they were gracious enough to wait for us...including waiting for my grandfather to walk down the way to the amphitheater...which took some time. They even did the fire dance again for us b/c we missed it in the beginning. Loved the little boat ride and getting to see all the sets from all the different movies. It's gorgeous there - no wonder the area was used in so many movies! Everyone enjoyed it, including my grandfather who was born and raised there and my aunt who thought it was only for kids. The staff was super accommodating and made sure my grandfather was OK the whole time. They get extra points for that! read more

What can I say this tour was great!!! Our chief had a great sense of humor and made sure to give us details on everything within the farm. Great place to go as the tour was not expensive and many movies were shot right on location. You get a bus tour, boat tour, Hawaiian fire dance, and fresh coconut. For the price the best activity we did. We also got to crush fresh macadamia nuts on the farm. They sell their own coffee too if you drink coffee. The staff in the stores were great too. Someone we met at our hotel recommended this tour. I looked at it on Yelp and saw the great reviews, so we decided to check it out. It was definitely worth it! The men who work here are all great, especially the main guy. They show you how they can use all of the parts of a coconut tree...to make fire, dishes, head bands, eat the coconut, etc. The main guy climbs the coconut tree, dances with fire, and tells funny jokes. They also take you on a little boat ride with a great view of the mountains. They explain things about trees, tattoos, nature, and more. I'd definitely come here again! I wish I had gone to their luau instead of the one that I went to. read more

Good tour, very entertaining. They do a tour of the grounds, a show with fire making, coconut husking. The reason for the 3 star rating was that it seems the tour has really shortened. They have discontinued the lake tour part. They used to take you out on a boat in the lake and take pictures with the incredible mountain view. That is really what made the tour fantastic. They also didn't do the fun stops that they used to - they'd show you what parts of the plants were used for and mark your face with a portion of the flower that was like paint. The tour just lacks the excitement it used to have. Disappointed that he price still stayed the same even after reducing the quality of what it used to be. We always took guests here, but won't be doing that any longer for the cost and what it is consists of now. read more

I visited Oahu with my Japanese parents for a week, and this tour was one of the highlights during our trip :) I was translating for my parents, but Ali'i seemed to have a lot of experience with foreigner tourists, he added many jokes in Japanese and we never felt left out from the tour. The tour was not only funny but also very informative about Hawaiian culture - like the ways of traditional Hawaiian cooking, marriage ceremony, and the native plants grown on Oahu. If only I could give this twenty stars. You are a fool if you could have gone and don't. These are the people that put the aloha in Hawaii. For twelve dollars you get a guided tour of a corner of Kualoa Ranch, Hollywoods favorite place to go in Hawaii. They'll give you a fire knife show, music, coconut husking (drinking and eating) and music. Not enough? You get a boat tour of one of the largest manmade fishponds (and the resident 6ft barracudas), secret island and an opportunity to get an amazing photo of Kualoa Range. The number of movies that have been filmed here is phenomenal (Tears of the Sun, Jurassic Park, Giligan's Island, 50 First Dates, plus alot more i forgot...) Still not done, get back on the bus they'll show you what natives used, give you flowers, fruit, the shirt off their back (if they wore one).
