Life lessons of anti-bullying, social responsibility, and being a good citizen are discussed with the kids in here which is a huge bonus. The classes go at the right speed that doesn't intimidate or burn out my sons and encourages them while learning. There are advanced students here who probably compete or are looking to do that. My sons are athletic but not on the aggressive side and this dojo is perfect for them and all types of kids looking to learn and excel in this sport. Because of this, I do see my sons staying for the long run. We are in no rush to get belt stripes or compete - we want our boys to continue at their pace and be excited to go to class. The staff of Izabella and Analise are the best - always welcoming, friendly and helpful. They are the perfect representation of this dojo. I started here 2.5 years ago and fell in love with muay thai immediately--Coach Carlos and my classmates have made the whole experience so rewarding. I can't go a week without being here; I'm honestly relieved the holidays are over now so I can return to my Empire routine! The jiu jitsu side of things is also great, since everyone is really encouraging and committed to being better together on and off the mat. It's really like an extended family where everyone knows everyone and the sport becomes more fun than anything else. Omar is such a solid coach who manages so many students so well. The music is always going and the mat is always packed. There's also a section dedicated to weights, with awesome personal trainer Chris available to help people of all levels get stronger. I've only just recently started venturing over to the weights, which intimidate me, but Chris is the best at helping you get comfortable with weight training. Whatever your goals look like, Empire gives you the opportunity to learn and grow into the best version of yourself. You'll make friends, set a schedule, and see the hard work pay off. I've never been very confident in gym settings, but Empire has really made me feel at home from day one. I've met some of my closest friends there. From day one, the instructors have each been welcoming and fair to all kids in the program. There is no question that the instructors all enjoy teaching jiujitsu to children of different skill levels and ages, it's definitely a passion of theirs and because of that, the kids safety and instruction is tailored to challenge each kid on an individual basis. As a parent, watching your children develop life skills, gain confidence, improve their fitness, respect others, enjoy competition, and have fun/laugh at the same time is all you can ask for - and that we get with every class we send our kids to. I dropped in recently as part of a larger project and from walking in, the music and cool nature of everyone on those green mats was very relaxed. One of the best things about this school besides it's cleanliness is how down-to-earth the leadership and therefore, culture, is. Good technique is something you can find anywhere [including here], but a good culture with a healthy, happy population of women and great music on the mats is a much harder find. As far as BJJ culture goes, this is the best balance between structured and laid-back that I've come across yet.

He also has trouble focusing at school and home, so wanted to give him something to keep busy. I wasn't looking to make him the next MMA champion or anything crazy. I just wanted him to learn to throw a punch and be able to defend himself, while also keeping him active. This place seems to be doing a good job with all of those. My son loves coming here and enjoys working out with other students. Coach David and Kru Stephanie are excellent with the students and seem to know how to tap into their potential. I like that they sometimes turn some training sessions into games to keep kids more engaged. All the students are nice too. I've been to some martial arts studios where some of the students act like thugs. I haven't seen seen any bad characters here. Kids/teens Muay Thai classes are held Tuesday, Thursday, Friday (sparring), and Saturday. Adult classes are held Monday thru Saturday. If you sign up here you can also take Taekwondo at Ferrer Academy, located on Lincoln Avenue near Moody Street. Such a small world because I used to train there over 30 years ago. Turns out the owner of this studio is the daughter of my former instructor. Tuition can be paid month-to-month or you can sign a 6-month or annual contract. Price is obviously better with longer contracts. Not sure if it's still offered but we were given a 2-week free trial period when we first signed up.

As a mom, I believe it's so important for children to learn basic self-defense not because I expect something bad to happen, but because I want them to have the confidence and skills to protect themselves if they ever need to. At first, my boys were nervous and intimidated. We visited a few schools before making a decision, but from the moment we walked into Teragi, we knew this place was different. Everyone made us feel like family. The professors and coaches are exceptional not only because of their experience and skill, but because they genuinely care about every child. They encourage, support, and meet each child where they are. I especially want to mention my youngest. Jiu-jitsu didn't come naturally to him at first, and he struggled to understand the techniques. The professors and coaches were incredibly patient and never made him feel like he was behind. They allowed him to learn at his own pace, and now it's amazing to see how much his confidence and skills have grown. That patience meant so much to our family. There's no pressure for kids to be the best. Every child learns differently, and the professors and coaches truly understand that. Since we homeschool, Teragi has become more than just a place to train. My boys have made wonderful friendships, and we've found an incredible community. I also have to mention how clean the academy is! It never has that old gym smell and is always welcoming. I've watched both of my boys grow not only physically, but mentally and emotionally. They're more confident, disciplined, and respectful. If you're on the fence about jiu-jitsu because you don't like the idea of your child being on the ground, I completely understand. I felt the same way. But the reality is that many real-life self-defense situations end up on the ground, and knowing what to do can make all the difference. The owners, professors, and coaches have cultivated a superb gym culture. This gym is safe, friendly, and supportive. The facility is modern and clean, and they've invested in a foam block subfloor beneath the mats for softer landings. As far as I know, this is the only gym in the area that offers women-only classes four times per week and a bi-monthly community open mat for gentlemen 40 years and older. My kids train here after school 4-5 days a week, and they love it. The kids' professors and coaches are experienced and amazing teachers. I'm especially thankful for the young coaches who were so patient and kind to my boys when they were hesitant and shy after first starting. And my pocketbook is especially thankful for the discounted rates for additional family members. If you're looking for a place where the whole family can train, grow, and feel welcome, I can't recommend Teragi highly enough.

Master Ali and his coaching staff go beyond teaching BJJ. They teach discipline, self-confidence, communication skills, and life lessons like how to deal with bullies. When demonstrating a technique, they ask the kids questions about it to keep them engaged and make sure they're paying attention. Everything at A-Team is earned, nothing is given. Stripes and belts aren't handed out just because you pay the monthly fee. When a kid makes a mistake, the coaches correct it; when a kid performs well, they get a compliment that reinforces their confidence. The coaches run a tight ship and don't let the kids run wild. We originally signed up our 3 year old who is energetic and wild so that he could be in a fun yet…read morestructured setting where he learns what discipline is and gets his energy out all at the same time. A few months in and we were almost going to give up as he was not making progress. However, after a quick chat with the Sensei, he made some adjustments that may seem little to him, but impacted our toddler and how we viewed each class. I have also seen other parents bring up concerns or feedback to the Senseis and instructors and noticed they do their very best to accommodate and/or adjust based on it. I also love the flexibility of the schedule. Some weeks we are busier than others but it is very nice that there's no need to call in or commit to specific days of the week. The times are perfect as well, especially for parents who might live further and don't get off work until 5pm. Each Sensei and instructor has been very patient, creative, and still fun with my toddler and other kids in the class. Every kid is so different yet they're able to manage the class with various personalities and energy levels. I also love that they do not exclude anyone! It is a safe space for any kid, young adult, or adult to build confidence and enjoy something where they are their own person.
