My friend was craving butter chicken, so we decided to try All India Cafe. The service progressively got worse through our visit. We wanted Samosas, but the waitress kept showing a variety of options on her phone trying to get us to order potato sliders. We don't want that. They didn't want us sharing an entree but one was enough. We ordered saffron rice but received basmati. When we asked is this saffron they said no it's basmati and walked away. Well this a pretty nice little spot nestled at the heart of Glendale. Just walking in, it's easy to be enamored by the lovely decor and intimate lighting. . Now, when it comes to the Punjabi cuisine, they stuck with your traditional dishes, and added an interesting Gulabi Farfalle Pasta dish that saffron curry base with bell pepper, coriander, turmeric, and cumin. To start with, the Pani puri shots made from tamarind and mint spices was a refreshing amuse bouche that helps cleanse and prepare your palate for the delicious food to come. The potato samosa was dense, but in a good way, with more potato than breading, which you can get from some other places. The mint and tamarind chutney paired well with the samosa. The onion pakora similarly struck a nice balance of crispness and savoriness without being too oily. Simple, but delicious! On the drink side, the mango laasi is one of the thickest I've had and yet it wasn't too sweet, either. It was refreshing. The same can be said with the Chai which was spiced well, but not sweetened at all. It tasted like actual Chai. As for the entree, the two best was the butter chicken and the Gulabi Farfalle Pasta, while the Saag Paneer and Tandoori were a bit underseasoned and less memorable. But the tandoori, which was not red because they don't use red food coloring, struck a nice level of tenderness and was not too dry, which I have found with some tandoori chicken. The garlic Naan had a very nice crispy texture to it, but I would love a bit more kick with the garlic. So the best two are the butter chicken, which you can never go wrong at any Indian restaurant, and particularly here. It was savory, filling, but not too heavy. It can be too salty if not balanced with some basmati rice, but it's not too rich, either. The Gulabi Farfalle was the most surprising and adventurous of the dishes tonight, combining two different worlds in one dish with bow tie pasta and the saffron curry base with bell pepper, coriander, turmeric, and cumin. read more

Attended the wonderful Ravi Shankar Ensemble Concert at the Alex Theatre on March 31, and afterwards I was starving. But not surprisingly, the All India Cafe a block away was packed with customers. The next day i was meeting nearby with a friend and i mentioned the night before. Entering the All India Cafe we were warmly welcomed by a man who soon told us his nickname was Happy. The waitress quickly brought ice water with lemon and after we ordered brought Aldo Paratha, a sumptuous foot-long tube of warm whole whole wheat bread stuffed with flavorful mashed potatoes. It was a delightful warmup for my Chicken Tikka which was tender and flavorful, but not too spicy, just as I'd requested. My friend had chosen one of the combination specials and raved about his meal as I savored mine. We both agreed the generous portions tasted fresh and tastefully seasoned. It was obvious to me that it was the best Indian meal I'd experienced. To top it off, Happy brought us complimentary dishes of rice pudding with crushed pistachios sprinkled on top, which at the time seemed like the perfect followup. The next day I sent a thank you text to my friend for picking up the tab which he'd said was very reasonable and he told me he'd already returned with his wife for another lunch. Ever since we lost one of our nearby favorite Indian food restaurants, I have been hunting for a suitable replacement that isn't too much of a drive from Santa Clarita. When I noticed the good reviews All India Cafe got in Pasadena and saw there was one in Glendale, I was elated. We tried it this weekend, late afternoon (to avoid any crowds and get parking easily) and I am happy to say we like it a lot. First of all, it is bright and clean, decorated appropriately in the colors and ornaments that one expects from an authentic Indian place. It's cheerful and the staff are friendly. I loved the fact that I saw Indians eating there too. There are large screen TVs showing Bollywood entertainment (love that!) and the menu is vast and varied. My litmus test for a regular Indian restaurant is whether they have Masala Dosa and carrot Halwa. All India Cafe has both, as well as many other dishes. When I am new to a place, I start with a vegetarian thali. It comes with a dal, raita (cucumber and yogurt), rice, and a choice of two side dishes. I chose chickpeas and potatoes with cauliflower. My friends had other dishes including a jalfrezi vegetable and some in a korma sauce. We ordered garlic naan, which comes with the thali, and then appetizers of pakora and masala dosa. Some of us ordered hot chai tea and others had lemonade with ginger. Everything was very good. The tea and lemonade were bottomless, so refills came regularly. There was enough food to take some home. For dessert we shared the halwa and gulab jamon. All of this positive. I like the location on Brand, as I had lived and worked in Glendale and am very familiar with the main streets. If I come again, I am going to avoid the very confusing electronic metered head-in parking (it took 15 minutes of coins and cards over and over to even get a ticket to put in the dashboard -- frustrating and a waste of time). If you come, park on Louise -- there is always a free spot there in the late afternoon. What would I suggest to the owner to make this particular place meet the highest standards anywhere? The thali looks a little bare. There should be a better rice -- this may have been basmati but it just looks like boiled Uncle Ben's on the tray. The chai should be hotter -- they are generous with it, but keep it in a thermos so it does just become lukewarm by the end of the container. It is a bit on the high-priced side (but maybe that is everything nowadays -- can't fault them) so everything should be the very best it can be. I felt the masala dosa filling was also spare and dry. The sauces were good. The desserts were perfect. I liked All India, I want to love it next time. read more

If needed, the Public Parking structure on Orange St is free for the first 90 min. DRINKS ORDERED - Mango Lassi ($5.95). Fresh, thick, and mango forward. It's not as sweet as the mango lassi I've had from other places. I'd like to try the cocktail version next! - Maddalena Cabernet ($12 per glass). I don't remember much other than it being a smooth red blend that I enjoyed. - Dirty Chai ($13). This cocktail was strong and heavily spiced with a sticky sugar rim. I love it when things taste like potpurri, but I thought it was missing something. Perhaps a warmer spice profile? APPETIZERS ORDERED - Samosa. I got one during Dine LA and it was impressive: crispy, but not oily, and generously stuffed with fluffy potato and peas. The filling was deliciously savory. I preferred the garlicky mint chutney over the tart tamarind dipping sauce. - Aloo Tikki. We also tried this pan fried potato pancake during Dine LA. I was wowed by the umami flavor and fluffy texture. - Tandoori Wings ($9.95). Pretty good! The wings were tender and charred, served on bed of lettuce and topped with tasty pickled cauliflower. - Chicken Pakora ($9.95). The white meat chicken was so soft that I thought it was dark meat! I enjoyed the fragrant batter, which was between crispy and soft. I don't know how this wasn't oily either. The mint chutney does a lot of heavy lifting here; I preferred it again over the other sauce, which was a super sweet tomato chutney. ENTREES ORDERED - Lamb Frankie ($18.95). My bf ordered this and I took a bite of the frankie topped with creamy raita. Lamb isn't my favorite, but I still thought that was a good bite. The meat was not too gamey, and the inside was saucy without making the wrap soggy. I thought I could taste some sort of stone fruit flavor in the sauce. - Fish Jalfrezi ($18.95). There were mixed vegetables and pieces of soft white fish simmered in coconut yellow curry sauce. The mild curry was sweet, coconutty, and tomatoey. We would have licked the bowl clean if we weren't in public! - Shahi Paneer Thali (paneer in cashew red gravy). This was part of the Dine LA deal. For $35, we got 1 glass of wine, 1 appetizer, 1 thali combo, and 1 dessert. The red gravy was sweet, fruity, and umami, surrounding toothsome chunks of fresh squeaky paneer. Omg so good!!! I also enjoyed the lentils and the Kabuli Cholay (chickpeas). The Kheer (rice pudding) was served cold, but the "fiery" taste of cardamom shone through. It was not too sweet. The rice pudding was good, but I probably would have preferred it warm. - Vegetarian Thali ($18.95). I went for the Malai Kofta this time. The gravy was tomatoey, nutty, and had a hint of fruit from the raisin. While the sauce was bomb, I thought the potato and cheese balls were too dry and firm for my liking. The daily lentil had a vegetal, almost tea like flavor which was nice. I also enjoyed the warm spiced flavor of the chickpeas. Fluffy basmati rice soaked everything up. I decided to try the Kachumber; it was an herbaceous salad of cucumber, onion, and tomato. BREAD ORDERED - Garlic Naan ($3.50 side or $1 added to thali). This was really good. The flat parts of the naan were crusty, flaky, and crispy, but there were also pillowy and chewy bubbles of dough. I'm not sure if the naan was unleavened, but I thought it tasted yeasty and good. I appreciated the kiss of garlic on the naan rather than garlic overload. - Tandoori Roti ($1 added to thali). The roti reminded me of a whole wheat tortilla. Happy Mother's Day. We came for dinner and they were not busy at all since most mothers go out during the peak lunch hour period. The interior is spacious and the decorations are better that most Indian restaurants I've been to. We ordered the Chicken Vindaloo, white rice, and garlic naan.
