The tech advised me to switch out the rental, saying it would likely die again. Enterprise isn't open on Sundays. I called on Mon and was assured I could swap cars. There was only 1 car available. At first, I was told I'd be charged for gas, since I didn't fill the tank, but I reminded them that I didn't want to turn off the car at a gas station, for fear it wouldn't start. I'd used less than 1/4 tank of gas. They understood, and I wasn't charged. The second car had something wrong with the trunk, but they were able to adjust it. It had a little less than a half tank of gas. I don't think the cars are thoroughly cleaned between rentals, but the staff does their best to deal with what they have. The staff deserves a 5 and the cars a 3, thus a 4-star rating.

I paid for the Intermediate vehicle option rather than the base vehicle specifically so I could save on gas. When I arrived, not only was the car I selected unavailable, but NO hybrids were even on the lot. They assigned me another intermediate car, and assured me they'd call me when the hybrid arrived at the end of that same day. It has now been a week and they have not called once. I have called them, though. The branch manager assured me she would find a hybrid from another Hertz location. That was four days ago.

After I brought it back, they inspected the vehicle, told me everything was fine, and said I would only be charged a late fee because I was about three hours late--not an additional full day's rental. The next day, they completely changed their story. They charged me for an extra full day of rental anyway and claimed the car still smelled like smoke. That directly contradicted what they told me after inspecting it. It feels like they were just looking for a reason to charge me more. I paid for a professional detail to address their concern, relied on what they told me, and then they went back on their word.
