Old school donut shop that looks like it's been in Santa Cruz for some time. The donuts were delicious, that is an easy review. A couple things that were weren't ideal are cash only, luckily I had cash on me, normally I don't. And the breakfast bagel was a bit plain. It had exactly what I ordered on it- egg, cheese, and ham but I thought it would be buttered or have some cream cheese spread onto the bagel itself. Alright, let's get into it. As the young ones now call it,"doom scrolling" I was doing just that on Yelp like I do religiously always on the hunt for a new place to try. Albright donuts was a place I always wanted to try. I ordered two breakfast menu items, the breakfast croissant sandwhich and a BLT bagel. Unwrapping my order I unexpectedly saw that they didn't give me a croissant for my order, but instead a bagel for the breakfast sandwhich. I was looking forward to trying their croissants and I was confused why they did that. I didn't like the bagels here because rhey were too dense, chewy, and didn't taste fresh at all and rather stale almost. The BLT had some sort of what it tasted like Cesar salad dressing and the bacon was crunchy, cut thick and well cooked. Of course I didn't forget to order the donuts and had half a dozen which consisted of 2 glaze, 2 chocolate raised, and 2 chocolate cake donuts. Oh, and a cinnamon sugar twist donut which wasn't all that. My favorite donut has to be the chocolate cake donuts. It was dense, moist, and not too sweet. The chocolate raised and glaze were nothing special and tasted very generic. I will say that the donuts here are very fresh and you can taste it. I think this is a great place to get your traditional set of donuts, but if you're like me you won't find anything very innovative or different here as you would any other donut spot. HEY, I almost forgot to say although I wasn't impressed, the donuts here were way better than Ferrells because those donuts from ferrells taste like they've been sitting out, stale, and are the worst donuts I've ever had. read more

This place is fantastic. Their donuts are great but their bagel sandwiches offer a tasty and substantial breakfast option that is relatively inexpensive. I got the lox and cream cheese with tomato and onion (the most expensive item on the menu) and it was only about 12 bucks. The staff is very friendly, often throwing in a couple donut holes for free when you get a bagel sandwich. The dining area is charmingly outdated and I hope it stays that way! Asian girl who takes your order, makes your order, takes your money *cash only but there's an ATM, sits behind the counter of donuts unbeknownst to newbies - pops up as one enters, "What would you like today?" she squeals out in English and also in Spanish. My fiancee ordered a glazed donut, which tasted fresh and "smoother" than other glazed donuts (she gave me a bite). Awesome food and great staff. Same few people every time I come in and they're all very helpful and kind. Their sandwiches are amazing and so are the donuts. Reasonably priced too! The last time I went I was an absolute jerk of a patron and paid with dollar coins, but the man working the counter joked with me as he quickly counted it. Some recent reviews on yelp for this shop is focused on negative interactions with the piece of pastry and "dirty" look of the store. I have not had any of those interactions so I will only speak on what I know. The donuts are served fresh and new. The workers/owners have always been nice and sweet. This is one of the better donut options in the Santa Cruz. Like many places in the bay area, parking is at a premium. Which is to say not all that easy to find. There is a tiny-three-four spots-surface lot, and the usual street parking. Since this is not on the main pathway to the beach, there are actually decent odds of getting a street spot, but at peak times you may be parking and walking on in. Water street has it's own traffic pressures, thus circling around could be more problematical then you'd want. The decor is all old school donut/diner. There is fairly extensive counter seating and lots of table chair combos. The spacing at the counter is tight, so if you've any mobility issues, the table/chair combos would be best. The service is of the order at counter and pick variety, but if you at the counter the staff will come check on you upon occasion if they aren't too busy at the register. Expect quirky locals to be hanging out at any given time of day. All the usual suspects for donuts-the apple fritters are better then expected. Actually all the donuts are better then expected. If you have a donut craving this is the place.They also do a lively trade in your sandwich/bagel items. The coffee is regular drip, plane jane-no latte, espresso's etc. but that's just perfect pairing for a donut. It's cash only-there is an atm on site- and a coffee and sweet will run you about 3-5 dollars depending on choices made. Adding a bagel sandwich will get you into the seven to ten dollar range which given the area standard pricing isn't too bad. read more

When I lived in Santa Cruz's Seabright neighborhood I faced a tough decision come Sunday mornings: The Buttery (a bakery that uses butter and organic ingredients) or Allbright's Donuts? Both were a nice walk, albeit in different directions, from the 'ol bungalow and, man, I recall feeling paralyzed with indecision some mornings. The apple fritter at Allbright's changed my opinion on apple fritters. Made me a fan. Allbright's was (and I'd venture still is) the premier donut shoppe in Santa Cruz -- serving up the best of the old fashioneds AND old timers. They really are the best old timers. The kind that know how to read other customers as well as they read the local paper. They can gather if and when you're in the mood for company and take no personal offense if the answer is "no." Great original U-shaped counter and stools, coffee refills poured regularly from middle stage, and some very, very old, color-worn promotional posters for coffee and what-not on the walls. Get there before 10 so the meat that's spinning-cooking-charring in prep for the lunch crowd at Taco Moreno next door doesn't contaminate that sweet fried donut scent that first hits you about a block away. read more

I was craving donuts and stopped in this little shop about mid-afternoon. The woman behind the counter was courteous and welcoming. I picked up several, from glazed, cake, old fashion, bar and twist. The only one worth mentioning was the old fashion. It was good. I was disappointed with the rest. Upon first bite, the taste, texture and freshness wasn't there. I expect a soft and yeasty interior.
