I have been a very happy patient of Dr. Ruani Gunawardane since 2009. Dr. G. ordered a TEE test and determined the stroke was to to a PFO (a small bypass hole in my heart that had not closed since birth and allowed a small clot to enter my brain). Following her direction, I was sent to a surgeon who was able to close the PFO with a device, called an Amplatzer, in order to prevent a clot from causing another stroke. Since that time, I have had routine follow-up appointments to monitor my progress to recovery. Dr.G is very popular, but her time and advice has made my life to recovery very happy.

My Citicard statement clearly shows two separate charges, but the office insisted they only received one and refused to acknowledge the second. I'm now disputing the charge with my bank. Patients deserve transparency and a billing system that doesn't double-charge. Check your statements carefully if you visit here.

Earlier this year in January of 2020 I woke up with the most debilitating pain in my head. I…read morethought it may be a migraine because of the symptoms I endured (headache, sensitivity to light and sound, etc.) It was at the point that I went to the ER twice in one week. I had no relief and was distraught and hopeless. After a week of pain, I knew a migraine would not last this long and my primary doctor referred me to Dr.G. From the moment I walked in the door at the Center for Brain & Neuro Care I was greeted with joy and felt hopeful. After doctors saying over and over again it is a migraine and would go away, Dr. G actually listened and asked the right questions. She recognized symptoms that other doctors had not considered, and on the spot predicted my diagnosis before any of the scans/procedures revealed information. I had what is known as a spinal headache as a result of a spontaneous CSF leak that occurred while lifting weights. Dr. G recognized the symptoms such as : pain increased while sitting up, pain between shoulder blades, vertigo, and tinnitus. Within minutes of meeting Dr.G, I knew I could trust her and I finally felt heard. Dr. G genuinely cares about her patience and I was able to build relationships with her and her staff that gave me the hope and encouragement I needed to get better. Due to the rarity/severity of my condition, it has been a long road to full recovery. However, here I am 8 months later feeling 100% back to normal. I continue to feel the support and love from the staff and will miss getting to see them on a monthly basis. Thank you Dr. G, Michael, Jessica, and Courtney for all you have done for me. You guys have made such an impact on my life and I am grateful, and certain, I would not have gotten through it without you!

While I appreciate how quickly I was able to get an appointment in with this office, Dr. Ruwani…read moreGunawardane definitely gives off the vibes that she is solely there for the money, and doesn't truly care for her patients. I did appreciate the friendly staff, and all of the testing Dr. Ruwani Gunawardane ordered to be thorough, but that is about it. Dr. Ruwani Gunawardane forced me to go to a specific radiology office (Charter Radiology), which was a horrible experience, and far from home for me. I was also forced to go to a specific pharmacy by her, which she claimed would make the medicine cheaper than going to the pharmacy my insurance actually covers, but it ended up being $10 more. She overbooks then rushes through appointments to compensate for that. She talks really fast, then gets annoyed when you don't understand something that was said, which is odd, as with this being a neurologist office, you would think she would have more patience with patients experiencing issues like brain fog. She also did not seem to actually listen to what I, the patient, was saying. I had to repeat the points I was trying to make multiple times, because she was more worried about rushing me out of there than actually listening to my concerns, and therefore wasn't understanding what I was saying. Even during the physical evaluation, where she had me tandem walking, she was too busy looking at and talking to her associate to even watch, until I lost balance and fell. Many things se wrote in her visit notes were completely inaccurate from what I said, and even from what she said during the appointments. The patient portal is also extremely outdated, and they don't post your test results on there, like they claim they do. This place is definitely a money grab for her, as they will find any opportunity to make you pay fees, even for simple things every other doctors office does for free, like prior authorization or printing prescriptions. My final straw with this doctor was when I had a 12:00 noon telehealth appointment set for during my lunch break at work. I was given zero instruction on how to join this telehealth, so I called the office at 11:30am, and they informed me that usually they call to check you in, then the doctor calls when she is ready. They said that since I called, they would check me in then, but the doctor was running just a little behind, however, she would call me by 12:15pm. At 12:25pm, I still had not received a call from the doctor, and had to be back at work at 12:45pm. I called the office for an update, and their phones were off. So, I sent a message in the patient portal (screenshot provided), stating that if I did not receive a call from the doctor by 12:35, I will not be able to do the appointment, and requesting that they not charge me, as it was not my fault. I spent my entire lunch break sitting in my car waiting for a call that I never even received. At 12:47pm, after I had started back at work, I received a call from the receptionist, who asked about the message I sent in the portal. When I reiterated everything to the receptionist and said that I was back at work, and could not talk anymore so we would have to reschedule, Dr. Ruwani Gunawardane snatched the phone from the receptionist and started coming up with excuses about her staff being late this morning and some nonsense about phone issues. I told her that was fine, but either way, I do not have time for this at this moment. She then tried to do the appointment anyway, forcing me to reiterate that I am back at work and cannot talk anymore. I told her that if she truly needed me to do a follow up, that's fine, I'll call and reschedule later, but as for right now, please do not charge me any fees or anything, and please do not charge my insurance for this visit, as it didn't happen. She started talking about how she has to charge my insurance bc that's how it works, which is odd, because how can you charge for a visit that didn't happen? I have notified my insurance of the situation, so hopefully she does not attempt to charge them.

I asked only for this service, and filled out the electronic paperwork at the kiosk for this single service. Once I got into the office, I told the practitioner on duty at the time, Kristen McGaha, that I was only looking for cholesterol check. But practitioner Kristen McGaha proceeded to first check my blood pressure, measure my waist, asked for my height and weight (she didn't take the measurements). Then she gave me a cholesterol test. She asked if I wanted a flu shot, and I consented to this extra service. After completed, she gave me the paperwork and the results of my cholesterol test. After I went home, I saw that I was charged for the cholesterol test ($37.00, coded as 80061).And I was charged for the vaccination ($26.00 coded as 90471 and $24.00 coded as 90674) -- I assume the two charges were both needed, but it its unclear. The services that I absolutely did not ask for were preventive medicine counseling ($69.00, coded as 99402) and blood glucose check ($25.00, coded as 82947). I went back to the store when I realized the extra charges, about two hours later on the same day, to speak with practitioner Kristen McGaha to ask her about the extra charges. She first said that they were mandatory. I said the CVS website says nothing about this service being mandatory. Kristen McGaha then said I had given electronic consent. I asked her to show me, and she printed out the consent form and tried to point out that the "I here by authorize" language was consent for all of the scope of services listed which included a list of services such as "treatment of minor abrasions and skin conditions" "diagnosis and treatment for common illnesses such as strep throat and ear, eye, sinus, bladder and bronchial infections". (Clearly this is a list of services offered, not mandatory services that I had to consent to pay for whether I asked for them or not.) Once I showed her that the language does not say that, Kristen McGaha pivoted and said that my insurance would pay for the services. I understood her words to imply that I shouldn't worry about it because insurance is paying for it. But, in my mind, that's wrong. It is incumbent on me to keep my insurance from paying for unnecessary services. I left, and Kristen McGaha, in my view, seemed irritated that I was making an issue about something I wasn't paying for. I then called CVS helpline 1.866.389.2727 to get redress. Of course, I was told that there was nothing that could be done, because I actually had the medical services completed. I insisted on getting this issue escalated. I was promised a return call within three business days. I am not holding my breath for a response. I am writing about my experience because I think people should be forewarned to watch how easily a CVS medical service can be slipped in to the process. And that these unasked for service could cost you, or your insurance company, extra.
