Today is my grandson's birthday. Daniel's favorite birthday cake is Portillo's Chocolate cake so I purchased their Chocolate Cake and stopped at Allegretti's to ask if they would simply decorate it with "Happy Birthday Daniel" - that's all - just a simple thing. Their answer was "NO" So I went to Old Mill Bakery at 4747 N. Harlem. Harwood Hts, Illinois and they said, no problem - and no charge. Long story short - I then purchased a 6" Ambrosia cake for $25.51. That's service. From now on Old Mill has my future business. It's not that Allegretti's isn't a fine bakery but they just need to learn that customer service pays off in the long run and doesn't get bad reviews. My sister ordered a cannoli cake for her husband's 30th and the bakery asked what colors for the writing...she says "I guess Halloween colors since that's his birthday". Went to go pick up what we thought would be just orange and black "happy birthday" writing and got THIS. (See cake in photos) So cool! Way to go above and beyond! This is our go to bakery. Great prices for exceptional quality baked goods. Helpful staff too. I bought a bit of everything but they sell this candy that blew me away. It's Italian and chock full of nuts. White and crispy crunchy. The flavor is hard to describe but it has hints of cinnamon. I'd go back just for that alone. The cookies are fresh and pretty. I recently experienced the famed chocolate donuts- they lived up to the reputation of being addictive. Those donuts will forever hold a place in the hearts of my family and me for a very special reason. My father in law was in hospice. We were with him daily as he ended his journey here on earth. During his final days he wasn't eating or drinking. I stopped and grabbed a dozen chocolate donuts. When I arrived at his home the entire family was present. After not eating for days my father in law tried a part of my wife's donut. His eyes lit up and asked for more. He ate a whole donut. That was the last meal he ever ate. I was asking for some stuff and instead of asking me would you like anything else she just gave me my total... then I simply asked for a bread and she turns around to the other co-worker rolls her eyes and whispered something about me right in front of me. Allegretti's is an awesome bakery in a quiet Norridge strip mall. It is pretty old school, but has some darn good bakery goods! I found out about Allegretti's at the Park Ridge Farmer's Market. They make the best donuts I have ever had! They have cake donuts and yeast donuts, I prefer the latter. These are unlike anything I have ever had! They are $1.25 each, but blow Dunkin Donuts of out of the water. This is how a donut should taste - light, chewy and sweet! They are sooooo good! I brought 4 dozen to a meeting and they were gone by the first break! Allegretti's offers a Groupon: $12 for $20, which more than covers a dozen donuts. You can only use one at a time, but it helps. The sheets of pizza they sell look good, but I just stuck to donuts for today. I highly recommend Allegretti's - it is a neighborhood gem! You can wow your clients in the Rosemont area if you bring breakfast from here! Donuts make everyone happy! read more

These doughnuts were sitting in the lunch room at a recent training I attended. I could not resist!!! I had a Cake Chocolate Glazed, Vanilla Long John, and Chocolate Long John. I've never had a bad doughnut in my life, but these were above and beyond better than your standard DD product. I'll also note that the long johns were abnormally longer than your typical long john. I needed a birthday cake for my daughter's 40th Birthday and noticed Allegretti's while driving by... I called and even though I needed it the next day they graciously took my order...It was ready as promised the next day and when we took it home and opened it up I was amazed at the artistry of the cake decorating....then when we took a bite.. Terrible!!! First off the they make their cakes very sugary. Surprised the regular costumers don't have diabetes or obesity. The atmosphere here is horrible. Seems like the people here hate their jobs which is no surprise since my friend heard the manager verbally abusing her workers. That lady needs some serious mental evaluation. Not even joking when I say that. They also seem to rush you out asap! Seriously?? And finally, my father came in to order a nasty sugary birthday cake. The girls there were laughing at him (he's from Ukraine) and its obvious that there is some racism going on here. How the hell was this on Chicago's best?? Their doughnuts are very good, however like many have mentioned they are always gone! If you want doughnuts, you need to get there in the early morning apparently. Their customer service is very poor. I have never walked out of there thinking wow, what a nice person that was. Most of the time they are rushing you and expecting you to know what everything is. Today was another example of their poor customer service. When I was in there around Thanksgiving, I saw the sign stating December 21 is the last day for Christmas orders. I pulled up today and saw the sign was still hanging saying December 21 is the last day. So I go in and begin to place my order when I'm told they aren't taking any more orders. I told her the sign says the 21st. She apologized and said there was nothing she could do because the owner decided this morning he would not be taking any more orders. I don't understand why they wouldn't have listed on their signs that this is subject to change nor do I understand why they would still have the sign hanging up. I have never seen a bakery refuse to take orders before their supposed deadline. I was very frustrated because I went out of my way to go there and then that is what I was told. She told me they would have some cakes each morning until Christmas that I can try to come and get before they sell out, but wouldn't take an order for me to get one on Sunday. It is just very sad that these people have a good product but they do not know how to run a business. Also, needless to say, there weren't any doughnuts when I went in today. read more

This place did not live up to the hype or the old Italian name. We found a GroupOn and figured why not let's check it out! It was our first time visiting Allegretti's and we thought it would be a good spot to order our cookies for our engagement party. When I picked up the cookies I wanted to open the boxes to check if everything was there and the girl working made a stink about it because she would have to open them all up. It was the day before our engagement party and I had an array of things to do so I just said never mind and went on my merry way. The next day while I was setting up our dessert table, not only was one of our orders of cookies missing but they put our chocolate dipped cookies in the same box as our lemon cookies!!! The chocolate rubbed all over the lemon and I was furious! I could not serve/display a good chunk of the lemon cookies because they looked awful. Thank god we had the GroupOn and I didn't pay the full amount. It wasn't worth it and the cookies were subpar at best. Will not be back! read more

Always had delicious pastries from them and cakes. We ordered a very special 80th birthday cake a half a sheet for my mother-in-law's surprise party. I brought them a very clear black-and-white photo and told them I wanted it to be transferred as an edible image on the cake in black-and-white & the cake to be decorated in black and silver. She said her scanner wasn't working at the moment so she kept my photo! I spent almost $100 for this cake and it was delivered to the hall the afternoon of the party right before the guest were to be arriving. I noticed immediately the image of my mother-in-law was a bright GREEN. I immediately called The Bakery and was told that's the way their edible cake images turn out and all of their customers are always happy with the images on the cake and never complain and she would give me my $6 back for the cake image! I was insulted to say the least and then very upset when nobody ever called back from Allegretti's to fix this! Their customer service & customer satisfaction was terrible and basically everyone at the party asked "where the cake was from and said that it was a horrible image"! I didn't hold back how dissatisfied and upset I was with this image and terrible Customer Service. read more

This little storefront is located in a relatively small strip mall, with decent parking, and is adjacent to other businesses that cater to the European contingent living amongst them. For specialty cakes, we have been coming here for years. But don't just stop at the cakes, the cookies (I love the biscuit tortoni which are almond-coconut) are also great. They also have the traditional lemon Italian cookies with that awesome lemon-brandy flavor. Baked goods seem to go really fast here; we usually order ahead or call ahead. So when I read the review that said BEST DOUGHNUTS EVER.... I thought it was an exaggeration and I was wrong. I got a regular glazed doughnut and a glazed cake doughnut and omg. Both were fluffy and delicious and seriously the best I have had in years. I can't speak about anything but the doughnuts but if the other items are this good consider me a life long fan. I've tried a few items at Allegretti's and for the most part, they're spot on. My brother, who loves donuts more than a district-full of police officers said the chocolate donuts are the best he's had. I like them as well - a pretty thick layer of chocolate frosting and the cake part is pretty decent too - one of the heavier donuts I've ever had. I also like their chocolate chip coffee cake - loaded with chocolate chips in and out - but not overbearingly sweet. Blueberry muffins were outstanding as well, but since ordering them my first time there a few weeks ago, I've not been able to get there when they have them on hand. Bummer. They also have some round pizzas - often topped lightly with onions available for sale. I tried one and it was OK - a little too tomatoey for me. Advantage D'amatos. I wanted a cake for a birthday party but did not love any of the ideas they had in their books, anything I showed them from online required fondant which I didn't want so I kind of just talked it out and the helpful worker just drew it and viola! I got exactly what I wanted and it tasted great, only complaint is the top chocolate layer lacked a bit of flavor but the rest of the layers where fantastic!! The cannoli filling was delicious!!!
