I grew up in Norridge and my Parents started me on Allegretti's Bakery! I have been eating this bakeries products for at least 48 years and the quality and freshness is always there and the bakery product always taste the same. This bakery makes amazing products that use Cannoli, and Custard fillings which are bar none the best fillings in this entire world. My favorite cake is a 3 filling white cake that has custard, strawberry and cannoli. This cake is incredible. The chocolate cake with banana and custard is also a great one. The pound cake is awesome as it is always moist and is different and unique to everyone else pound cake because it is covered with chocolate glaze on the outside! A great time of the year at this bakery is St Joseph/Easter time when Allegretti makes Zeopples, which is an incredible pastry filled with that great custard and cherries. Been going to Allegretti's since it opened in Norridge some 50 years ago. Tried other bakeries but always went back. Everything is delicious. Best cannolis ever. Have ordered all our special occasion cakes from there, usually order whipped cream cake and have had every filling they make ...they are all good.....we have never been disappointed. This bakery is ridiculously horrible. The staff of girls are genuinely nice, but sometimes they only have one girl working instead of 2 when it is too busy it seems. I' got a glimpse of the manager before or who I think was the manager and she didn't seem friendly at all. Also, I've learned that the pizza bread isnt always made on that day. It's not hard to tell which ones are from the day before and from that day. I have to say their chocolate donuts are delicious, but other than that the bakery itself isn't a favorite. Also, some of their things they sell are over priced. The sun dance ornaments they sell if they arent sold out of them are sold for $1.99 at the bakery. Why spend that much when you can pay .99 cents for them at the dollar store...come on!! Overall, not the best place to go. read more

Came here on a day off after seeing them on 'Chicago's Best' for having the best chocolate donuts around. Being both donut-shaped and a donut connoisseur and needing Christmas breakfast, I drove the 45 minutes to see if this place was worth the hype. I got there around 10:30 with a line of about 7-8 people, which is a good sign, except I am a bit claustrophobic and the place is pretty small. I had to wait about 5-10 minutes, which wasn't bad. Service was very quick, warm and friendly. I bought 6 donuts and 2 eclairs since I had no cash ABD there was a $10 minimum to use credit cards. Total was around $11, a little pricey to me but not terrible. I waited to get home to try one. It was worth the hype. The donuts are fried cake but incredibly moist and airy. The chocolate icing is more like a fudge and is awesome. Great place and the best donuts I have ever had!!! Just wish this place was much closer! read more

Do not use this bakery for a wedding cake. After going in person to taste cakes and fillings, we discussed our flavor choices tier by tier - this was VERY clearly discussed. The bottom tier would be our favorite flavor since it was the largest and would feed the most people and the top tier would also be our favorite since we'd be saving that and taking it home with us. An additional sheet cake would be provided in our second flavor to make sure we had enough cake for our 250 guests. This information was scribbled down on a blank piece of computer paper which was concerning, but we figured they do this all the time and we shouldn't worry. Wedding day arrived and we tried to cut the cake...and couldn't cut through it. The bakery decided to save some effort by frosting styrofoam and providing sheet cakes. I don't know if they forgot about our order and didn't have time to use real cake, or if they just didn't care. Awful experience. read more

Placed a cake order three weeks in advance and paid in full. Scheduled to pick up on mother's day. Called to inform them i was on my way for the cake to find bakery closed at arrival. Attempted to return next morning to find it closed again. Came back tues to be told the cake was thrown out. Advised employee the girl who answered the phne the day for pick up should hve told me they were about to close as i was unaware and what wld b the result of my cake. Employee offered to make another cake ($25 cake) at no cost considering the situation. I scheduled pick up for a Thursday. Only to b called by the owner wednesday to be told tht she wld nt b making another cake. Tht if i wanted another id hve to pay again $25. Mind you even after explaining that i did not find tht to b right after i called day of to advise i was on my way n the employee should hve told me thy were about to close early. Plus she stated they notated i did not call or show. Completely not true. The owner had a horrible attitude about the matter and was showing a very careless attitude. She did not want to help solve this in a correct manner. $25 was too much of a cost for her to understand the error in her service. She continued to repeat she wasn't going to eat the cost. Mind u this was a order i placed just to try the cake in order to place a larger cake order for an event. Her being the owner shld hve handled this better thn she did. She wld hve recovered her pety $25 in the order i wld hve placed anyways. But of course after the horrible experience n service i wld never again do business with them again. Of course im sure she cared less because i had paid in full in advance n she already had my money. So to her why bother being concerned about a negative experience caused to a customer. I ordered a birthday cake based upon the reviews and I have to say I was very disappointed. I ordered chocolate cake and I'm not sure what it was. The filling had some type of chip in it, which I didn't order. The staff was rude and seemed genuinely not interested in providing any type of customer service! ok I go in here at least 2x week buy donuts, dough, & pastries, They really need to use the numbers system. The last 2 times I was in there and mind you it wasn't busy I get passed by in line someone who arrives after me. Don't want to make a fuss because I've been ordering the zeppoles and they make them to order. If I tick the gal behind the counter she might not stuff mine with all that custard. TERRIBLE SERVICE!!!! BEWARE!!! I was informed by one of their "staff" I would have to pre-order zepoles. However, upon picking them up, I was told they didn't make enough and therefore my order wasn't filled. That's it. Just "sorry. have a nice day." Stupid me pre-ordered an angel food cake, and it happened again!!!! When I arrived, I was told the order wasn't filled. Manager didn't even come out to apologize personally or explain. I expressed immense frustration to a very disinterested 17 year old girl. VERY disappointed and will NEVER be going back there again. The absolute best cannolli in the Chicago area. But be sure you eat them as soon as you get home (or on the way if you can't wait). Crisp pastry, and creamy sweetened ricotta filling, with pistachios on the ends. If you need to keep for several hours, do not refrigerate or the pastry shells get soft. Delicious, and all our friends with whom we've shared them, agree they are the best! read more

I had been raised on Allegretti's. My grandfather supplied equipment there and my dad delivered and installed it way back when. My family(dad & me) stopped in every Saturday for a coconut custard pie for dad and I would always get a treat of my own. Then when Zeppoli were available look out, we would stop at least twice a week. The chocolate covered Pound cake is another try. Why not add in the pizza bread and a couple pounds of cookies while your at it.This is one of the last great Chicago Italian Bakeries left. I wish I lived closer so I could stop in every week like we did way back, now I just stop in a couple times a year now that I live way to far. read more

2 months ago i went to the bakery to place a cookie order per request from my cousin for her shower. As I walked into the bakery it was not up to my standards of cleanliness but against my better judgement I placed a cookie order because this is where she said she wanted them from. I drove 30 minutes with my then 2 month old baby to ensure the cookies were going to look exactly how i wanted them. I brought in the invitations to match the colors. I ordered Pink star and Grey Cloud Cookies with them both thinly outlined with gold. The women who took the order said that was not a problem and quoted me. I left very confident that these cookies would come out perfect. 5 weeks later I called (3 weeks before pickup date) to see if the cookies could be picked up a day before my original pickup date, I reiterated my order and they said No problem. I showed up at 7:30am THANK GOD I DID, because the cookies were all wrong. The cookies were White Stars and Purple Clouds with Yellow lined frosting all around. I told the women this was not what I ordered. She went over the order with me and said they would fix everything not to worry. I was so concerned the cookies would come out wrong again I asked her to go speak with the baker while I was there. She came back out and said everything would be exactly how I ordered them and they would be ready the next morning. I was too nervous that they were going to be wrong again I asked them if they could email me a sample of them before they remade all of them. Again, They said no problem. I left the bakery at a loss of words that they could mess up an order that bad. I called the bakery at noon ( 30 minutes before the bakery was suppose to email me) stating they didn't not need to email me I was going to driving back out there to see them myself. I showed up at 1:30 and wow AGAIN the cookies were wrong!!!! The Baker who made them came out and I went over my order with her and she said thats not what she was told but it was clearly on the order ticket I placed. We went over the cookies on how she would make them look what I originally asked for. She said that what I wanted would have been $1 more a cookie. I said no problem, Ill pay whatever to have what I ordered. She then explained that she was backed up with 5 other orders and there wasn't much she could do to help me. She then went and said since all the cookies were already redipped ( they were suppose to get approved by me before) she could only "spray" some of the color off. I left again and came back the next morning to pick up the cookies she reassured me were going to look good. AGAIN, the 3rd time they cookies were not what I asked for. The bakery Had 3 times to make the cookies right!!!! I told her how I was EXTREMELY unhappy and disappointed because I was referred to the bakery and I would never be ordering or referring this bakery. The Baker went and told me "WE DONT NEED YOUR BUSINESS, WE DO FINE FOR OURSELVES ". I was in complete SHOCK that a small local business could even think that way! I was a customer long before they were on 'Chicago's Best' and the service and quality was unbelievable but since they were on TV the quality and service both have gone down hill!! What was my favorite, the cinnamon roll now are raw each time I have purchased them. The 1/2 sheet pizza's don't seem like they are freshly made every day like they use to be. They use to have an assortment of donuts now they only sell the chocolate donuts. Then to top it all off, one of the associates takes advantage of the customers by not being honest about the amount of money they are given. Thank goodness there many other bakeries in the area to visit for my sweet tooth fix. I'm thinking that they are enjoying the new customers from the TV show and really don't miss the long time neighborhood customers. As little as this store is, it's a valuable asset for this neighborhood. OMG, those chocolate donuts make you feel like you've died and went to heaven. There is no other bakery that can compare to these wonderful delicacies. They sell out so fast, you have to place an order early in the morning, to be sure you will get some. I have frequented many bakeries throughout the northwest side of Chicago, but this little store beats them all. Recently tried their cinnamon bread- WOW !
