My previous piano tuner technician retired so I asked for a referral for someone in my area who does good work. Brian was the tech I was sent to, along with another. I was always happy with the tuner who took care of my instruments for about 20 years so their endorsement was important to me. Using the online scheduling system I made an appointment about a month or so out since it was the soonest available. There were follow up e-mails and confirmation of the day and time and Brian showed up on schedule. Since I know enough about pianos to be dangerous we had a conversation about what I needed from this service, go over my wishes from my first e-mail and clarify what my priorities were. A piano like mine that has not been serviced in a long time did have other problems that were diagnosed quickly and solutions were offered that could be done easily and with a minimum of additional charges to the total bill. Tuning, regulating the action and voicing the hammers made a big difference, plus all the little things I asked for got taken care of. I knew from experience that this was going to take some time which in turn meant it would cost more than "just a tuning." I have no gripes about the bill. Bottom line: you get what you pay for and this servicing resulted in a playable piano that I can enjoy rather than one that collects dust and is a nice place to display family photos. read more

WOW is all I can say. Brian did such a good job on my piano after a disappointing experience with another local tuner. He cleaned the inside and outside of the piano, adjusted the damper pedal, tuned it perfectly and even softened up the hammers and the piano sounds as beautiful as the day I bought. He is worth the wait for an appointment and his prices are more than fair. He is a true professional and is very skilled. I highly recommend Brian. He is honest and a really nice guy. It pains me to write a negative review about a local business, but based on our experience, Brian is either extremely inexperienced or simply a crook - out to take advantage of the inexperienced, elderly and new piano owners. Unfortunately we do not see another explanation for what we experienced after scheduling a piano tuning with Allegro Piano Service. Yes, the prices are double what you would get from other local tuners. However, after reading the positive reviews, we thought it would be a small price to pay for the right service. We had Brian of Allegro Piano Service come out to tune our recently purchased (used) piano. Immediately upon arrival, he notified us that he didn't realize our piano was a Young Chang Piano. And that it would likely need new action brackets - apparently a common issue with Young Chang pianos from the 90's where the original action brackets expand causing the action hammers to stick. He proceeded with removing the piano action to inspect it and confirmed that our piano could not be tuned without replacing the action brackets, a service that costs $2,500-3,000 and requires him to take our piano action back to his service center to work on for 3 to 4 weeks. We were completely heart-broken to hear that "we made the worst mistake of our lives" purchasing this awful and faulty piano that's not worth anything and suggested donating or selling it for "whatever we could get for it" to a piano shop. He recommended a shop he knows and said they would help us invest $5,000 to $6,000 into a "good" piano. When we told him we'd consider it and get back to him, he ended up charging us for an on-site evaluation ($185) and left. Later that week I started researching action brackets and found a local company that sells them for $24/bracket for a total of $96. Youtube videos promised an easy step-by-step guide on replacing them, but we thought we'd try other local piano tuners for an estimate. To our surprise we found out that it costs about $250 to replace the action brackets (on-site) and takes an hour or two; plus another hour of tuning which would be an additional $150. Total cost of repair would not exceed $450-500. We were extremely relieved and scheduled an appointment with the new tuner the same week. But here's where it gets interesting.. When the new tuner showed up and proceeded with the action brackets replacement, he quickly realized that the original brackets had already been replaced. It took all of 20 minutes to make the proper adjustments, then a couple of hours to tune and clean our beautiful Baby Grand for a total cost of $350. He then played some Beethoven for our daughter, complemented us on a beautiful purchase, wished a good evening and was on his way. No more sticky hammer action! The action brackets that Allegro Piano recommended are still sitting in the box, unused. But I supposed we are relieved to know that we made a good purchase and did not end up getting scammed out of $2,500 - $3,000 for service that was simply not necessary. We couldn't help to think about all of the inexperienced and naive folks out there that might have fallen victim to a similar tactic. Hopefully sharing our experience will help others avoid the pitfalls we almost experienced with Allegro Piano Service. read more
