from a first glance: out visiting a friend in the area and stopped by for some food, had no expectations. from the inside and out, I really liked that it wasn't modern looking I appreciate the look it has but that's just my opinion on that. food-wise: was just craving something small and ordered steak tacos and a coke, the tacos had a homemade taste to it and reminded me of a Mexican family friend and the way she makes food. I was really glad I took a chance here, well cooked and fresh. *note* take it easy on the red hot sauce they offer if you have a very mild tolerance for spice. I'm Latina and grew up on hot sauce so for those who love a good kick, go ahead and be heavy handed. I appreciated it not being thick like a sauce yet not watery like a salsa. service: entering in there was a nice, professional woman who greeted us and let us knew to order down by her register. once we got the order in, she let her cook know and it was out fast and fresh. she then dropped off my coke to the table and later my food, thanked us for coming in and took care of us well. I used to come here with a good friend who went to DePaul 15 years ago. It was his favorite spot. Today, I happened to be working in the neighborhood so I stopped for lunch: it was as if I entered a time capsule and ate the same delicious tacos in the same retro seat that was already retro when I sat here 15 years ago. I enjoy the utilitarian decor and the hand made signs that have been there for years. They do perfectly seasoned tacos (etc.) at an unfussy, reasonable price, with quick service. Give them all your money. Eat all the things. This place is fire. It still exists today in an increasingly "posh" area because there are no contenders to this authentic flavor. Invest in these small businesses and it will pay dividends in the places you live for the people who live here with you. read more

I only had their horchata and it was absolutely delicious. IIt checked off all my qualities for tasty horchata: creamy, sweet, no chalky aftertaste, smooth. While the meat inside the tacos was great (got Al Pastor tacos), the experience was a bit disappointing. Authentic tacos shouldn't have sour cream and cheddar cheese as toppings! No complaints except when you click the link for the menu it is severely outdated. Things are probably double the prices now. You'd expect an online menu to be more accurate but a 150% price tag is a little annoying. Tacos say 1.55 online but are 2.95, for example. That said, I got the chorizo burrito and while the food is super fresh and hot, the flavor is kind of lacking. There was also nothing but chorizo and lettuce and tomatoes in my burrito even though the menu in the restaurant said it also had sour cream and cheese. The hot sauce, which you have to ask for, is basically hot salsa and that's pretty damn good and does add a lot. Overall, they 100% misrepresented themselves online and the quality of ingredients doesn't represent a $12 burrito but it was open late while chipotle next door wasn't. A means to an end but not sure I'd go back unless forced to. read more

I ordered two carne asada tacos with cilantro and onions. They tasted great to me. However my Mexican friend said the carne asada was too dry since they cut the meat into small pieces. She also said her Al Pastor taco didnt have the pineapple kick she was expecting. So maybe this place caters to the taste of the non-Mexicans living in Lincoln Park? Had breakfast here at the end of my most recent Chicago trip. It was Sunday but I wasn't feeling fancy brunch. I wanted some solid breakfast. I had gotten Mexican food the night before across the street and realized I should have come here, though they don't have a restroom which is what I really needed after getting off the Red Line. I could see how it's popular for late-night food. It's the kind of flavorful but no-frills food you want to eat after your other nocturnal adventures. But they make a mean breakfast too. I had the huevos rancheros. The eggs are runny in the middle and you need the beans and rice to soak up the yolk, and they come with tortillas. The hot sauce from the squeeze bottle was no joke. Definitely enhanced the flavor in small doses. I would come back and try the non-breakfast items if I'm ever back in Lincoln Park. read more

Allende is not only quick and cheap, but the quality of its Mexican food is superb and really holds its own in a city where tacos seem to be found every other corner. We came here for a quick bite after checking out the nearby Alphawood Gallery. Allende feels like an old school diner with Mexican flavors. There is a bright menu displaying the various items ranging from tacos to tortas, burritos to enchiladas, and horchata. Everything ranges from $3 - $10 so it's definitely an inexpensive dining experience. You place your order first at the counter, seat yourselves, and then await for the food to come. I ordered the carne asada torta ($5) and a side of fries. Let me just say that the tortas here were bomb! Great meat quality, large portions, and their avocado spread was very generous. It was so good that I ended up ordering a milanesa torta to go. It wasn't as good as the carne asada, so I'd stick with that in the future. Loved dining here and would definitely come again for some excellent Mexican for cheap. read more

I wanted something different than a sandwich so I chose Mexican. If Fiesta Mexicans was still open I would have gone there instead. This spot has been here for a bit, just never tried it til today. The exterior is outdated for a place in this neighborhood. The inside is also outdated. Must be the same menu boards from 20 years ago. One word guys...UPDATE!!!! It's 2019, not 1999. Everything needs updating inside. It's clean but not contemporary for the area. The lady who took my order was nice, friendly. Brought food to table when it was ready. Prices are cheap but the burrito I got was really sub par. First of all I think it's really strange the burritos don't come with rice. Second of all they forgot two ingredients so my burrito was essentially shredded chicken, sour cream and lettuce. The shredded chicken also had weird crunchy seeds (I think..) which wasn't appetizing as I couldn't identify what it was. We are always in the area & biked by the restaurant but on Weds 8/5/2020, we decided to stop in. We bought two Burritos, chicken & pork, the pork was tastier but they were both good. However, we had a jug of water on our bike & asked the lady if she could spare two 2 cups for the water we were carrying. We bought our Burritos to go to eat them in the park. We were not impressed when the lady said $0.25 per styrofoam cup. (not even a plastic cup) We were customers & had bought two meals, to charge a customer per styrofoam cup left a very negative impression! There's not many affordable options to eat by Depaul and Allende is decent. My torta was pretty good but one thing that really annoyed me was they wouldn't give me water with my meal . They only offered to sell me a bottled water almost left because of that but I was hungry. Also no complimentary chips and salsa with your meal but you never know which places still do that. read more
