I can still remember receiving my first pair of cowboy boots. First cut, ostrich skin, deep black cherry Luccheses; I was a junior in highschool. What I find hilarious now is that I actually wore these cowboy boots to school quite frequently, and somehow earned the nickname "Nathan, the Guy Who Wears $1000 Cowboy Boots". Apparently to people at my highschool, that was an exorbitant amount of money to pay for shoes. I guess(?) To clear up any confusion, NO, I did not pretend to be a "kicker" and if you asked me what the FFA was, I probably would have responded "Funny Fag Association", of which I personally knew I would be a charter member one day. No, I wore my boots with designer jeans and Polo dress shirts, and I looked damn good. I still own them to this day. Anyways, I was always a fan of Cavenders, but my dad, brother and I chose Allens on SoCo to be the last place to kill time before our table was ready. That's the beauty of SoCo: a visit to the sh*t-kicking cowboy store is easily sandwiched between frolicking among candy and saddling up to a Bloody Mary and quail sandwich for brunch. This Allens was fairly busy, mostly with a lot of looky-loos and halfway buzzed twenty-somethings blabbering on about the college-themed boot displays. This is the sort of place that makes me feel instantly butch, what with all the dead animal carcasses around and chandeliers made of antlers. I sometimes fantasize about killing the game myself, and then fashioning it into a fabulous lighting fixture once I got the buck back home. If I could find a husband who could do that...HOT. Dad instantly went to the Lucchese racks and they had quite the selection. Fresh off my adventure to The Snake Farm, I found it appropriate that less than 48 hours before, I was musing about skinning those animals into fabulous footwear, and now here I was surrounded by their more sartorially useful cousins. I was less amused by the white snakeskin boots...that still had the snake head on the front. That's just disgusting. My dad asked a male employee about some style of boot in some manner of color, but I didn't really listen as I was mentally trying to shave off the salesman's beard and cut off the guy's Jesus hair to bring out the attractive man I knew was behind that unruly mane. Then again, this was Austin, so it was nice to see even a country and western store still had hippies around. The guy was very knowledgeable and offered to look up the boot both in the back and electronically, so the service was excellent overall. I picked up a pair of black alligator boots worth $3200. Dad asked what made this particular style of gators more expensive than the ones my Grandma gave him for Christmas, which clock in at just under $2200. I responded that the more important question was why he wasn't asking Jesus-in-the-Wranglers to wrap me up a size 10.5 to go, and soon, because our table would be ready over at South Congress in 15 minutes and I kind of wanted to wear them if at all possible. Honestly, it never hurts to ask him. Seriously, that's how I got Kar. Western wear is everywhere, and I thought back for a moment on the one time I dressed up in full cowboy mode. (No hat, thank God, that's just something I could NEVER pull off outside of a role playing adventure). My friends in college wanted to go dancing at some Midnight Cowboy Rodeo Dance Hall Beer Hall Pool Hall Saloon type place one night, so I put on Wranglers, the boots, and the only pearl-snap Western shirt that I have ever bought, solely because it resembled Madonna's in the music video for "Don't Tell Me". That night, I wore it out and probably looked absolutely ridiculous, but it's amazing the amount of confidence gained when a platter of JELL-O shots and a Shania Twain song is involved. I *did* feel like a woman. Anyways, to this day, I still get asked if I ever have occasion to wear "The Madonna Shirt"; the short answer is "no". But if I wanted more like it, Allens has it all. Does anyone else find the pink mini cowboy boots for little girls adorable, and then frightening when you know they'll end up on "Toddlers & Tiaras"? Or--as I've recently petitioned TLC to have it renamed--"Desperate Rednecks Wasting Money To Parade Their Girls Around In A Whore Costume While Sitting In A Half Empty Mid-Tier Holiday Inn Ballroom With The Only Goal Being To Stick It To Other Desperate Redneck Families Exploiting Their Own Children In Much The Same Way." I think it rolls off the tongue quite nicely. Alas, the time came for us to take leave of Allens, but not without Dad vowing to find those boots he wants at another location. It was a nice visit. My only regret is that I hadn't had enough alcohol to stand up on a chair and belt out "There's only three men that ima serve my whole life: it's my daddy and TEXAS and Jesus Christ!" Ask for Brent "The Boot Whisperer". He knows his boots and he knows feet. He also knows leathers and boot makers and how to rope a goat. And he watches The American Hero Channel which kind of makes you want to trust his advice. All it took was my description of what I wanted. Brent was on top of it and went right to a pair of gorgeous dark caramel Lucchese boots. I gulped. It was love at first sight. I put them on. It was like walking on a cloud. He told me they were the most comfortable boot in the store. I agreed even though I never tried on another pair. So here's some Sam Lucchese trivia. He was born in Sicily and immigrated to San Antonio, Texas where he set up his bootmaking factory with his brothers. My grandmother knew him and owned a pair of his ranch boots. Lucchese was known for fine workmanship and quality. Even though he died in 1929, it's as though he touched my boot leather and created the stitching himself. It's a long story, but the bottom line is that their return policy is ridiculous. I received a pair of boots for Christmas which did not fit. I found a pair that would work at the South Congress store, but they were a discontinued display pair that had considerable wear on the bottom, no tags and did not stand up on their own (I even questioned if they were used). The manager was so rude beyond belief when I asked for a discount on the boots. Her attitude made me just want to get a refund and leave, but the fact that they do not do refunds forced me to have to purchase something or take a credit. Since I will never set foot in the place again, I reluctantly bought the boots as they were really all that I could find that I liked and fit properly. What is ironic is that I first took my Christmas boots back to the Allen's on I-35 where they scrutinized their bottoms and commented on how they were scuffed. I reminded them that the reason for my return was because I couldn't get my foot into the boot and assured them that they were not worn. The salesperson approached the manager and showed him how he had worked to get the scuffs off and asked him if they could take them back! I was unable to find a pair that fit at that location, so that is how we ended up at the South Congress store. Even if you're not in the market for boots, Allens Boots is a sight to see. I've never seen a store with such an expansive collection of cowboy boots. The boots are arranged by sizes, and there really is no rhyme or reason to how they're organized as far as I could tell. There are so many different brands and styles of boots, so you could spend quite some time going down the racks on racks of boots. The boots are not cheap either. They're made with real, quality leather, and the artistry and detail that go into some of the boots are phenomenal. read more

We were in the area and stopped in, as I have been hunting for a new pair of boots. I was ready to lay down some money. A nice girl greeted us and as we were chatting, I asked her for some socks so that I could try on boots. She said, "Boot socks?' "No... just socks." "Boot socks?" "No - I need some regular socks to try these on." And then she handed one of those hosiery footies, like you try on with heels. Maybe I am missing something here. If I was selling shoes/boots at $300 and up, I would go down to Target on my lunch break and buy a $2 pair of socks so that my customers could try on whatever they wanted. Heck, I might even buy a whole pack of socks. At least, when I was at Cavendar's and Shepler's, they had socks for me to borrow - which leads me to believe I wasn't asking for anything outrageous. This will probably be the biggest cowboy boot store you'll ever set foot in. The selection is massive! It's all gorgeously and invitingly displayed. But, boy cowboy boots are expensive! They are definitely not something most of us could purchase on a whim. The gorgeous craftsmanship of each boot is definitely something to appreciate and admire. The store also has a nice selection of high quality cowboy hats and attire. If you were to be outfitted with hat, boots and shirts you'll be looking to spend over a grand for just those 3 items. The Austin Location gets one star and the Round Rock location gets five stars. Sheplers in Austin has good selection at far better prices. The Justin Outlet in Ft. Worth is 99% made in Texas boots at factory outlet prices. The very best quality ready to wear boots with the best service can be found by visiting Carlos at the Lucchese store in San Antonia. There is also a Lucchese store near the factory in El Paso. Carlos will measure you feet and find you the best fit possible. The Austin Allens location seems stocked to part women from as much money as possible. I heard a high pressure salesmen telling a foreign tourist she needed to spend $400 for a pair of made in Texas boots. Tony Lama has very nice boots made in Texas for half that for men and women. For $400 make sure you're buying the best, Lucchese. Parking at the Austin location even in the middle of the week sucks. Round Rock has great parking. The best boot stores in Texas I've found are Allens Boots in Round Rock (not Austin), Sheplers in Austin, Justin Outlet in Fort Worth and Lucchese in San Antonio. For this review, I suprised myself. I actually own 5 pairs of boots. I know because I counted. I was suprised because that number is higher than I expected. Two pairs I bought probably 15 years ago in Dallas. Plain rawhide boots - one in brown, one in black. I used to wear them more regularly when I was younger (unmarried) and had some buddies to hit the honky tonks with. My latest favorites are Ariat® Sierra western work boot. One pair is older and broken in, as I mainly use it for hunting - the other is a pair I wear to work. When my wife gifted me a beatuiful pair of Luchese's for my birthday. Is this a great gift or what?!! When they did not fit just right, the folks at Allen's had no problem and provided a hassle-free exchange! Belt she gave me (insert weight jokes here) - same story! The shopping spirit just hits ya when you step foot into this boot emporium. For those of us who don't live in Austin, or Texas for that matter, we're likely thinking: this place is a cowboy boot bonanza! The jackpot, if you will. For locals, and those Yelp-conscious, chances are (and I haven't conferred with my local sources) that Allens -is- the absolute mecca of things totally wonderful (yes) but somewhat overpriced. I hate to differ with my unbeknownst local insiders, but dare I say that I scored the most majestic most non-cowboy boots that I've ever laid my eyes on. Everything about them was miraculous. Namely, the size. There's nothing that makes a girl happier than when she's a size smaller than what she's used to. Shoes are no different. Suddenly, I stepped feet into these handmade Mexican marvels and I was a size 8.5 (a complete size below my more familiar 9.5). The next most miraculous thing, the cost. I'm assured Allens is slightly touristy and maybe priced highly, but these babies came out at a reasonable $--- (I won't say because they made serious sense for my wallet, but who knows about yours). Just combine 1-7-and-9. As far as pure leather boots go, I was happy. The take away is, if you're on the search for bedazzled or totally unbedazzled and rather urban looking boot things, Allens should certainly be on your list. Allen's big ole boot sign is hoisted proudly above the store's entrance, inviting you to partake in the biggest boot show this side of Town Lake. (Okay, I get carried away.....it's certainly not the biggest...but it feels big when you walk in.) A visit to Allen's is probably a must. It's fun, there are thousands of cowboy and cowgirl boots, the people are friendly, it smells good. But, my friends, it's not cheap. A friend visited from Queens and had a one-track mind about getting herself some fancy boots. She went home empty-handed after a visit to Allen's, astonished to find no pairs under $200. And she thought the cost of living was outrageous in NYC. Ha. I suppose the cost is not that unreasonable - we're talking high-quality, real leather, specialty boots. But if you don't plan on wearing them daily, it is a wad of cash to come up with. Don't let this deter you from checking out Allen's. It's fun to walk up and down the aisles checking out the supply. Get Christy Grace to help you! She's the best!! That's no lie!! Mr. Smidgens was in need of some of the best boots in town! I went to the other places in town, but something just felt right about Allens Boots. As you walk into the boot shop the smell of leather hits your nose like a horse bucking you in the face with soft fluffy hooves. Christy is as knowledgeable as she is sweet! She must have brought me 15 pairs of boots to try on. You see, boots fit differently than regular shoes and different leathers break in differently. Once I found a pair I liked and that fit me the way they should we had Christy hold them. You see, Mr. Smidgens had not worn his own pair of boots since he was 10 years old. This was going to be a big purchase and Christy was patient with me. I ended up coming back almost a week later to pick up the boots we had chosen. The process I went through was one that everyone should experience when purchasing a new pair of boots. Allens Boots and Christy will make you feel at home and answer all your questions. They have 2 locations. One on SoCo and one in Round Rock. Hours: Mon - Sat 9 AM to 8 PM Sun - Noon to 6 PM If you want the "Christy" experience, I recommend you go to the SoCo location. Overwhelming selection for someone like me purchasing their first pair of boots - it's hard to know where to start. You can smell the leather walking in, and I love the historic stone building that Allen is located in. Thankfully I had my native Austin friend with me to help show me the ropes, as someone briefly showed us the general layout of the store, but then left, and then a second person kindly tried to find something in the back but then disappeared. Thankfully my friend helped guide me in how to judge a good fit, and good cut for my height and leg type. Because of the phenomenal selection I was able to find something. When we brought it up to the counter, they asked who helped me - uh no one really. As they checked me out, they didn't even inform me of the return policy, until I asked. Also, I let them know this was my first boot purchase, and they never educated me on how to care for the boot. I went online and visited another boot store to inquire about boot care and they where much more friendly and knowledgeable; even though I didn't buy anything. Plus, I could have understood if Allen's was busy, but it wasn't! We went on a week night, and the place had the fewest people I have ever seen in there. I have been in several times before to show my out of town friends while visiting SOCO as it is definitely a tourist quick stop to show some local flavor and get the "Texan Boot" photo op. Three stars for ambiance and great selection - wide price ranges, style varieties, and brands, but can use a refresher in customer service. Tip for serious new boot purchasers - go on a week night when they are less crazy, take someone with you who has boot knowledge, and give yourself at least an hour. My mom and I stopped in and needed a shirt for here ASAP and we were in a huge hurry. She found one that worked and we hustled up to the check out counter to try and buy the shirt & leave as soon as we could. I went up to the counter with the tag and credit card in hand, since we were extremely rushed. Well, I cannot tell you how RUDE and INAPPROPRIATE the girl behind the counter was. There were two men talking by the check out counter off to the side, who didn't really seem to actually in line. So naturally I hurried to the counter and the women behind the desk immediately snapped at me that there was a line and I needed to wait. So when I tried to have the other employee behind the counter help me, since we were clearly in a hurry, the man refused and said that's not his job..... The women then proceeded to bark at my mother and myself that there was a line and went way too far. We clearly got the point that there was a line, we didn't need to be yelled at about it. The women then told us that she "is working on a very important order" and that the two men were spending $1,600. The men instantly looked embarrassed, and why wouldn't they? That was completely unnecessary to let other customers know how much the customer in front of us was spending. SO UNPROFESSIONAL. I live here in Austin, Texas and Allen's boots is known for their bad customer service & return policies. Might I suggest Justin's Boots or Cavender's Boots!! If you're a boot lover or secretly dreamed of being a cowboy/girl, this is THE place for you. Even if you're not in the market, go in and check it out--especially if you're in the SOCO district. There is SO MUCH variety and it can get overwhelming. For me, it was pretty easy to narrow down selections. I didn't even look at the boots that were over $200. They do mark the ones on sale clearly so you can just hone in on them. The place does get busy, and there are several people who will just stand in the aisles with their eyes completely glazed over by the options. The boots are just beautiful, and there is a fair selection of the traditional cowboy boot and riding boots that are bit more versatile. Men's and Women's selections are vast and in addition to that they have plenty of hats, clothes, other accessories to complete your cowboy/girl look. Staff is helpful and friendly. read more

First of all, you walk in and are blasted by the intense smell of leather, and in a good way. Second of all, FUCKING $1500 BOOTS, KID!!!!!11!!!1!1!!!! I don't think there is a single boot in here under $150 though, so don't even bother unless you are prepared to plunk down some real cash for the real deal. Pro tip: They do have the cheapest belt buckles I saw all day. On at least one occasion, I walked a block down the street and saw one of the very same belt buckles sold new here for $15 for $25 and up in a used "vintage" store. read more

Also, deep down in our heart of hearts, we ALL wish we could pull off a pair of cowboy boots. I mean, they just look so damn cool. Not to mention, they have other styles than classic cowboy, including the booties fit for city folk and Frye boots. But they ain't cheap, expect to pay $400 or more as standard. Though I saw some as low as $150-$200. They also carry handbags and belts, wallets and hats and basically anything of fine leather quality. All the boots are out on display so you can try on to your hearts desire. Why not give a $1,200 pair of ostrich or alligator boots a try? A friend of mine needed a pair of boots for dancing at The Spoke this weekend. He's a Silicon Valley refugee in need of some classic Austin garb and I moved to town two years ago with my own well broken in pair, thank you very much - so I had to ask around. But hands down what made the expedition was the meticulous knowledge of all things boot-y of one Clayton, the adorable salesman. After looking at boots on each end of the price and materials spectrum my friend settled on a great looking pair of Lucchese ostrich. He even went home with a handmade boot jack which Clayton said he stayed up until 2AM making more of since the stock in the store had sold out. I love the selection and the depth of knowledge here. The vibe is old town cowboy so why buy your boots in a department store? The racks and racks of gorgeous Robert Graham shirts were hard to leave in the store, too. (Please please don't tell me if they make women's shirts. Really.) Bravo, Allens. Thanks for making our last minute boot buying adventure memorable. I was in Texas (Dallas and Amarillo) a year ago. I didn't leave the Lone Star State with any boots. I went back to Austin last week. THIS time, I wasn't leaving Texas without a good pair of boots. I got them at Allen's - for less than $160. I selected the perfect pair, with the help of a friendly sales-dude, out of a great in-store variety. I didn't want a super pointy cowboy boot, just a bad-ass, kick-ass pair with a squared toe that would wear well with my style. Just before going to Allen's, I passed by another smaller "western wear" shop just to see what they had, and the selection was almost nil. Yup, Allen's has some pricey footwear, but if you're in the market for that price range, they have the best to offer in that arena. I've been to Allens Boots dozens of times over the past 3 decades. Yes, Ive been going there since I purchased my 1st pair in 1983. I now have 14 pair of boots (forget penis envy, I gotcha man) and each pair is special to me. I have everything from leather to rattle snake thanks to them. When they're in town we drag VIP'S and friends to this iconic place. My guests have never been disappointed and we have so much fun with the variety of TEXAS products they sell. No exchange or refund policy.......yes, I'm aware of their policy and that's the reason the 5th star is not up there. This store has even been in a movie or two, remember "The Ringer"? If I wasn't financially challenged at the time, I would have bought myself a genuine pair of Texan boots! They have every color, size, and style imaginable. The people that work here are incredibly friendly as well. I definitely fell in love with a couple of pairs, however, being that I live at the beach in California it probably wouldn't be the best use of my limited funds. The store is un-missable with it's giant boot sign hailing you in off South Congress. Walking in I was greeted by walls and walls of every kind of cowboy boot you could imagine! The service was impeccable - these folks know how to make a New York city gal feel at home! They were unendingly patient with my indecision, and did not appear frustrated with my friends and I went around and around, then insisted on trying on their dresses WITH the boots we hadn't even decided to buy yet. They ended up selling me a fabulous dress (Odd Molly - I get tons of compliments back home in NYC) and an even more amazing pair of Luchesse boots in peanut brittle (tee hee). Went into Allen's today, as I have boots on my birthday/christmas list and was looking into how much the fiance is going to have to spend on a pair. Of course, I end up having expensive taste- every pair I picked up that I love was $300+. Guess the boots may end up being on huge birthday/christmas gift together. They had a massive selection. I imagine when boots are handmade, they dream of going to boot heaven. In this case, Allen boots might suffice as the same endpoint. Rows and rows of boots line up this throwback shop with tons of friendly and helpful (but not pushy) salespeople. I went in to the store just planning on looking and ended up leaving with a nice pair of boots. The boots are very pricey and I definately recommend at least going in and trying some on to get that 'cowboy' feel. I was planing on buying boots anyway, so I prefer supporting local Austin businesses. The only drawback is that they don't allow refunds, so you better be darn sure you want the pair of rawhides you try on. I'm satisfied with my purchase though. Boots never go outta style and they're gonna look nice the next time I'm at the ole Dancehall or walking around town. read more

Bought about 6 pairs of Lucchese Classic Ropers from here . The store has a huge selection and naturally caters to tourists. Sales people are always helpful and friendly. I often have to ask them for the "boot socks" that come with Lucchese classics and sometimes they don't have them or can't find them. Good source of boots, nice people. They can have good sales from time to time, if you hunt on their website. read more

When I was visiting Austin, my now-local friend decided that a trip was not complete until I have tried some cowboy boots. Those boots are definitely not cheap so I didn't splurge But as we browsed the aisles, pointed the most elaborate/outrages/insert-your-own-adjective pair to each other and had a great time. I guess the staff were quite used to people making this as a tourist spot and after checking on us to make sure we didn't needed any help, they just left us alone to laugh and take photos. read more
