5 Stars for a small, but beautifully-curated *menswear shop with great employees. OK, so Service Menswear says menswear in the name, but I was able to get a bomb pair of $20 sunglasses, and saw a few t-shirts I would rock, so though it skews more masculine, I'd say there's some room for the ladies too. My biggest takeaway, beyond the great clothing and accessories, was Jeb. This man is a GEM. From the moment we walked in, Jeb greeted us and made sure we were taken care of. He was smiling and so incredibly friendly the whole time, even cleaning the cheap glasses I bought in the end before handing them over. These were legit the cheapest things you could buy in the store, but he treated them like I got a fancy pair of Ray-bans from the glass case. True story: personal appearances aside (mostly mine), I'd be a clotheshorse if I could more easily afford it. These guys have some terrific threads in the offing, and I'm the first to note that I'd love nothing more than to pop in here, toss caution (and my credit card) to the wind and buy, buy, buy. Very cool selection, though. When my Powerball numbers hit, or I "get the cush," I'll buy the lot of it. It's tucked away behind Guero's, but they are moving to the new fancy glass thing going up next door. These guys have the best belt buckles in town. Some are vintage, and some are new but vintage style. They have a great selection of old school Vans. Their T-shirt collection is great. It's not as cheeky as some stores. A bit more understated and classic. My favorite thing about Service as that none of their clothes look like they will be out of date in 6 months. This store has some stylish clothes, or so I'm told. I can't really tell the difference, my favorite apparel is actually the standard geek uniform of T-shirt, cargo shorts, and flops, but a female friend who is a seasoned man-watcher has brought me here to shop a couple of times. The store has really pricey clothes, but no more pricey than Barney's Coop or Nordstrom's. They have a nice selection of cool (and really expensive) T-shirts here. The designs are cute, but what I like most is the fit - they seem to emphasize my chest without being too tight and give me a nicer V-shape than I really have. They're also really comfortable. They also have some nice long-sleeve shirts here, but you have to have a pretty specific body type to wear them well - you have to be fit, but not too fit. Most of the shirts I tried on last time I was here were too tight in the chest area even though they were just right in the stomach. I did buy one shirt here (which was a ridiculous $150! - you could almost buy dinner at Uchi's with that!) but it was the only one which fit well out of about 12 that I tried on. The also have pants, belts, sandals, and probably other accessories as well as shirts. I haven't seen many normal guys shopping here, just men that are dressed like the guys in Esquire or GQ and the guys that are there getting dressed by some female. And if you're overweight I don't think you'll find anything that fits you, though I admit I didn't look specifically for fat clothes. The return policy sucks (short return period, store credit only), but they have some cute sales chicks there and all the people there are very helpful and friendly, so it's a nice place to shop if you're into clothes or forced to shop for clothes by someone close to you. read more

As soon as my husband and I wandered in, I thought that we were probably out of our price range. Typically stores this small, with few racks of elegant clothes on wooden hangers, are too expensive. However, I was pleasantly surprised to find that the coats were not $600 like I expected them to be, but a more manageable $150-250. My husband liked one particular Spiewak coat that fit him perfectly, and it looked extremely well-made and warm. The salesguy who helped us wasn't too pushy, but did the Amazon .com style of selling, which was, "Do you like that peacoat? If you do, check out this version that zips up instead of buttons!" and showed us similar styles of coats. We aren't the type who would spend $200 on sunglasses, or hundreds of dollars on slacks, but $165 for a well-made and perfect-fit coat like that is a good deal, in my opinion. So we bought it. Wandered in here while rambling around south congress. The hub has been looking for black jeans for a while and had been having trouble with his size. This store is small but has some really nice items and a lot of jeans. The worker there was very friendly and helpful and patient. The hub tried on about six pairs or jeans and he suggested a different brand which were perfect. A brand called kato- never heard of it but made in LA and kinda pricy. But for men it seems harder to find stuff that fits well off the rack. Anyhow he bought his jeans for about $200 and these should last him for a while. Lately I've been partial to western, industrial workwear so this was a spot I didn't want to miss. I was surprised they had Naked & Famous Denim. There was one shirt I wanted to buy by Penny Stock but I passed on it since I shouldn't be spending money at the moment and the shirt wasn't that unique. They have the most interesting, stylish (yet not gaudy!), and varied offerings here! Shirts, pants, shoes, socks, sunglasses, wallets, jeans, and lots more accessories. They never have just crap to try to fill up their store. They really do a fantastic job of picking out inventory that is actually awesome. I love, love, love this store! I have been shopping here for years and it is a staple for my boyfriend. The staff are extremely helpful, knowledgable and an absolute joy to work with. They carry a nice selection Reigning Champ, Naked and Famous, Deus, Kato, Vans, Banks Journal and other brands that my boyfriend wears. The store's space is well laid out and inviting. It's a great place to shop on South Congress for men's clothing, decor, sunglasses etc. I honestly don't what I'd do without them because I shop here almost exclusively for my boyfriend. PENIS ENVY. Some guystores make me wish I were a guy. Service Menswear is one of them. Solid. Accessible. Handsome. Crisp. Eternal. The Owner/ Buyer has a great eye for quality men's clothing that already looks like a favorite when it is hanging in the shop. The prices seem to be consistently better than STAG (for STAG's upper tier) and By George for Men. STAG is just across the street, so check it out for yourself. The new space is sweet, filled with light, clean and crisp and everything is beautifully displayed. Quality is important and if I were a dude, I would choose 2 quality shirts here over STAG, where you would only get 1/2 of a shirt for the same price anyway and who can wear half a shirt? (Dude, that is SO not attractive.) Edit: See STAG review as more research has been done. I was impressed with the attentive service that was helpful and not intrusive in any way. Also noticed that NONE OF THE staff were texting while customers where in store and they ALL seemed to be trained with authentic and happy peopleskillz. They knew immediately which items run small, which run large, and which ones you look good in... We left with gray button down for $65. Quality detailing. Coldweather seasonal stuff has arrived. The Spiewak warm coats were beautiful and soft to the touch with nice lines in handsome fall colors. Sweaters, cool jean jackets, corduroy shirts and pants. Desert boots, sharp shoes, fun flip flops, billfolds, belts, sunglasses...all hardy sturdy strong designs. Handsome. A trip to Service Menswear brings out the masculine in me... For some reason - lately I've been feeling like spending money. Perhaps I feel like it is time to do my part in jump-starting the economy. That feeling came to a grinding halt when I came to Service Mensware yesterday. I used to really like this store - a great rotating selection of mens clothing at reasonable (though slightly elevated) prices. They had good service, and they pre-shrink the clothes so you know that how you buy them is how they'll fit forever - that is - as long as you lay off the BBQ and fast food. I walk in, find a rack of solid-colored polos. Check a price tag. Ah, $17. Not bad. OH wait. Wait. Is that? $174? This is a polo, right? It has no design? No designer label? Its just... a plain... grey... polo. $174? Must be a pricing error. Maybe there should be a decimal there. Check the polo next to it. $174. Lets try a different rack. Ooh, shorts. These look mildly interesting. I could use another pair. Oh, but they're $130. Shorts. Not designer denim. Not denim at all. Cheap fabric - half a leg-length's worth at that... generic... shorts. Ok, ok, I get it. Clothes are expensive here. How about the accessories? Certainly those sunglasses wouldn't be outrageous, right? I mean they've got to be selling something in volume to stay in business. This is Austin, after all. $280. For the same effing generic aviators you could buy at Wal Mart. Ok, I'm sure they're slightly nicer, but look - aviators are aviators are aviators and I'm not spending $280 for your aviators when I could go to Cream or any other SoCo boutique and get a pair for $15. Service Mensware, GQ has gotten to your head. As much as I try to buy local - you are no longer local to me. Whoever your clientèle is - it is no longer Austin. My boyfriend and I were on a mission - a mission to find him the perfect shirt for going out, we had a big night planned ahead, and he only brought a couple of t-shirts in his luggage on his last visit. Surprisingly, or not so surprisingly, I find it extremely difficult to find great men's clothing stores in any place but a mall or department store (which we both tend to hate - boring, a dime a dozen, and overwhelming). We were roaming through various second hand stores when someone mentioned Service Menswear. My guy was like a kid in a candy shop here. He tried on about half the store, and a lot of the clothes looked great on him. However, we ended up walking out without fulfilling our mission, as most things were a little out of our price range (once we get jobs this may change). Service Menswear has a nice selection of classic men's clothing. The store is a bit on the small side, and can get crowded on a weekend. Also, they have more sizes behind the clerk counter, so just ask for your size if you don't see it out! read more

Terrible customer service. Overpriced. My husband loves jeans. We have traveled thousands of miles to different funky places for his weird hobby. He found this place and sort of impulsively bought a pair of jeans. Well, when he got home he realized that he didn't really like them and that he could find the exact same pair from the maker online for CHEAPER. We tried to return them but the salesman gave us some talk about how its not his decision, he will talk to the owners, we cannot talk to the owners, but he will pass our request along. A separate salesman told us a different story over the phone. Finally I called a third time and asked for the contact info for the owner but was just given an email address. I sent an email...no one replied. If this place is locally owned then why is the owner treated like "The Great and Powerful Oz" who does not need to interact with customers. I did get a call back from a salesman, but of course he was just passing along the message that they would not be accepting our request for a return. They lost us as customers and I can't recommend that anyone else take a chance on this place. read more

My husband has found some great clothing at Service Menswear over the years. These guys have an eye for cool, interesting and eclectic clothing that fits well. Their accessories and shoes are very hip, too - carefully chosen. Recently, my husband found some way cool RVKA pants. They fit him beautifully, and the price was fantastic-like $50-60. My favorite shop in Austin, without a doubt. I remember way back in the day when Service was located in Dobie Mall on UT campus. I used to stop by and see killer accessories from the likes of XLarge, Stussy, etc. At the time these guys were way ahead of the curve. I also remember when Service moved over to South Congress behind Guerro's. The location certainly had a more eclectic vibe than Dobie, but in contrast, Service's lineup became more refined. I still remember how stoked I was when I snagged a Victorinox military sweater there. Now Service is in a modern new building, but still on South Congress of course. These days their selection is top notch. Everything they sell is clean, and minimal. Nothing to excessive or flashy. Their Jack Spade selection is top notch. Everytime I step into Service i'm greeted by the same staff after all these years. That doesn't change. Yet, their class and style is always becoming more refined. read more

It's hard for me *not* to be a fanboy for Service Menswear, but for you my friend, I will try. First, it's tucked away in the back of the Hopdoddy Burger Bar building. The parking situation sucks, as it's South Congress, but usually you can find something in the parking garage behind the building (enter via the alley). Service Menswear is not a huge space. I wouldn't say the selection is limited, but it isn't expansive either. I see this as a good thing, though, as it means I don't have to pick through a dozen racks of ugly, poorly-made, overpriced shirts before I can find some that are good. Service has already done you (and me) a favor by constraining the selection to stuff that looks good and is built to last. One of my biggest pet peeves when it comes to clothing (short of not being allowed to run around Whole Foods in boxer shorts and a t-shirt on laundry day) is shrinking; there's nothing quite as upsetting as finding the last shirt on the rack at the store fit just right, and after a load of laundry it's 3/4 the size it was when you brought it home. To this end, Service Menswear PRE-SHRINKS all of their stuff. ABSOLUTELY MIND-BLOWING. If it fits in the store, it's going to fit next week. Hallelujah! To ensure a fair and balanced review (yeah, right), I should note that they have a shitty return policy. Tags or not, they will not give you your money back. Perhaps they already spent it on the the next shipment of great clothes, for which they will give you store credit. Regarding exchanges for damaged merchandise, well let's just say they are no Nordstroms. I exchanged a pair of socks that developed a largish hole in the leg after a single wearing and they were about as skeptical as you would be if I told you I was a Martian (they did replace them, after a 10 minute discussion). BUT don't let these few points dissuade you. If you're a man (or shopping for one), you owe it to yourself to visit Service Menswear the next time you find yourself in need of something with which to don your flesh. They might not have what you need, but if they do, it just may be your best retail experience ever. read more

Coolest menswear shop in Austin. This is the thing-- I don't want to dress like a club DJ, a frat boy, or a hip hop artist. Also, I don't want to dress like an old man gone wild at Nordstroms. And I'm not going to shop at the mall-- the place just sucks too much. But Service is right on. The stuff is always changing so if I just rattle off brands they may not be there when you go there. But, I can say that I have bought Penguin, Fred Perry, Toddland, RVKA, that sort of thing. Hip, young, but subdued and refined. Tasteful, and the clothes hit a few different price points, so you can find something in budget. Secret tip: Get on the mailing list and you can find out about sales that are often quite substantial. read more

Visited in September 2007. Very nice albeit small store. It felt a little cramped. Nice selection of clothes with a good point of view, merchandising wise. Most of the staff seemed aloof, though a guy who I took to be the owner/manager helped me and was friendly and helpful. A lot of stuff is on the pricey side, but they do carry some mid-range stuff like Levis. I even bought a Levis chambray shirt that my local Levis store didn't carry. Okay, so I was walking out of Ann Kelso (they can cut the curls, what can I say?) and I noticed Service Menswear taunting me as I walked past. I kept walking to my car... and doubled back. Now, I'm not a guy who would (or could) spend $278 on a pair of Italian fitted slacks (actually I'd love to if the means allowed)... but I will spend $30 on a perfect boutique t-shirt (RVKA). Especially when it fits like it was hand cut for my wirey little frame. The girl working was super friendly and gave me a quick run down on the designers, and then helped me pick 2 out of the 4 shirts I was holding. She didn't argue, and wasn't pushy when I told her I should probably just grab the two. Yes, maybe a little over priced, but they have a great selection of eclectic, hip, and classy clothes for men who want to dress like adults. I'm sold. read more

I've always loved Service for their selection, staff and price point but today, I got the honor to chat with the owner and the sweetest salesperson while we played dress-up with my man. I love that they both knew exactly what would work with Matt's physique and his style. He can be pretty conservative (no striped anything, ever) but they were totally able to accommodate us. In less than 30 minutes we walked out with several outfits and several more items that we will likely come back for. Service is a perfect men's casual wear boutique. The epitome of great customer service. I had decided to make a trip to Austin and check out Svc. Menswear b/c they are the only place that stocks Moscot in TX. Although they did not have any frames to fit my gargantuan head, the sales person (i forgot her name) was very helpful in suggesting other options. After looking at a plethora of frames and not finding the perfect pair (they have many fantastic frames to choose from), I decided to shop for clothes. She was helpful and not pushy at all. She also suggested a place in town where I might find some frames to my liking. As I left I decided driving the 82 miles would be totally worth it when I decide to go again. p.s. Stopped in here for a gift for my guy and was pleasantly surprised. A cute (and not too small) selection of shirts, t-shirts, pants, socks, and a few accessories. The pricing is a cross between "varied" and "all over the place." Some of it seemed pretty expensive (flannel shirts?), yet I got a really cute graphic tee for around $30. Will definitely be back for future gifts. Be warned that it's a small space and can be difficult to navigate, but that's part of the fun. Surprisingly good selection in such a small space. Awesome service, they'll stick with you through many pairs of jeans to get it right. Had my weird size, 33/34, in most pairs. Classy vibe throughout the inventory. Not cheap by any means, but definitely more reasonably priced than Stag across the street. Kinda an outta-the-way location, so you gotta look for it. If you're looking for a good pair of LEVI'S, go here. Not much else in terms of denim selection, but I'm not in to ultra-expensive snobby jeans. Wonderful selection if your looking for sporty up to business casual wear. The staff is great and helpful, especially Jeb. Prices are very reasonable and just about the same as what you'd find online... I'm not sure why people would complain about that from a small boutique in one of the more expensive parts of town :) Just walk next door to 'by george' if you want some triple digit price tags!! For a local boutique for men this store needs a realignment in staff. I have visited multiple times and for some reason I just do not feel welcome at this store. At my recent visit last weekend during ACL the store associates were talking about "being pretentious" and how saying the word pretentious was snobbish. Meanwhile, the store was not flooding with customers but for a small shop there were about 8 people in there who could have been helped. The clothing is not cheap and it is my belief that if you want someone to buy something you have to create an expeirence for them. You can't expect a customer to want to buy your plain over washed bomber jacket for $300 when you can't even make small talk because you're busy talking to each other. Just a thought. read more

Worst customer service and return policy ever. Avoid this place. I bought a bag that didn't fit my laptop and they wouldn't take it back the next week. No damage, no change, all tags still on, all paperwork in hand. To make it worse I asked if I could return it and was told "yes". My mistake was not asking if I could return for a refund vs store credit. The excuse given was they are small and can't afford to give refunds. read more

service is always at the top of my list when i get the shopping itch. it is never pretentious and the styles there are very "easy". i know easy may be a bad word when it comes to style, but it is very relaxed and casual. the guys there are always extremely helpful and well informed. they know they cuts and fits on all their items from shirts to belts. another good thing is that a lot of the items are pre-washed so the fit is right on. i have yet to have any buyers remorse about any of the purchases made here. i recently went to their new location behind the new cici's market and by george. the building really terrified me as it was going up as it had corporate shit hole emanating from the steelwork. luckily they have some great shops like service there that deserve your patronage as loyal austin citizens. as a plus, the parking in the garage is free for the time being. read more

The service is *definitely* better when either one of the owners, James or Kirk, are there, because they really know what service means. They are now spread over to their new store, Crown, which is further down South Congress, so they have to rely on hiring people who "get it," which I'm sure is hard to do.
