This place was great! We had a delicious and satisfying brunch that was also very reasonably priced. Cute and cozy inside. Kinda kitschy decor mostly honoring Germantown. Very, very clean. There was ideal background music, 60s-80s familiar tunes. Just loud enough to hear and enjoy. Bonus points, I did not notice any TV screens. We had two classic brunch dishes. The French Toast was amazing, thick, eggy, just enough cinnamon. The fresh fruit on top was a welcome surprise. My husband loved the Benedict, halfway through he mixed his hash browns in with the runny yolks and took it to a whole new level. There are some nice options offered on the breakfast/brunch menu. Coffee was decent and refills offered. We both cleaned our plates. I think our waitress was Kelly, not positive of the name. Dark hair. She was great, very real, like a small town diner waitress oughta be. Knew the menu and what to recommend. Just the right amount of conversation. We had gone to early Sunday Mass in Lebanon, driving back towards Eaton, and I had no less than four brunch possibilities lined up, all of which failed for one reason or another. So frustrating.... the menu doesn't include allergens at all. I am allergic to tomatoes and I ordered meatloaf. It came, covered in ketchup. Even without the ketchup it looks gelatinous. Absolutely turned my stomach when it came. I also ordered a loaded baked potato and what came out was something I'd be embarrassed to serve. My friend ordered the scramble bowl. It had sausage in it, but sausage wasn't listed on the menu. Thankfully she wasn't allergic to pork. All that, and we waited 40 minutes for our food to come out. Today they booked a shower in the back on the same day as center Street market downtown .There were four or five tables waiting and the server(very rude) kept telling us "there's a shower in the back" and didn't really seemed too concerned that people had been waiting for over an hour for their food. The table across from me had been waiting 55 minutes and finally left . When I decided to leave I expressed my concern and then was told "your food will be out in a minute" and the server laughed. When I told her I didn't appreciate the laughter at my concerns she said "have a nice day" and I left. I want to support you. But scheduling a shower on a busy Saturday without staff to cover the extra guests and then to be laughed at? I don't appreciate it. Germantown needs a good family diner and frankly, right now, it's not Alleyway. The service has been slow in the past but today unacceptable. read more

We stopped in starving after a morning of hiking and wanting to support small business. This is the location of my first job when it was the "downtowner" back in the day so I was excited to visit. The inside is very cute and homey. I loved the decor. There were little black flies buzzing about everywhere but it didn't concern me because they are everywhere the time of year. We were the only customers and there seemed to be only one person working. I felt bad because they had a walking boot on and had to do everything themselves. We ordered the special pumpkin coffee and sweet tea as well as cheese curds to hold us off until we could decide what to get. The sweet tea was as expected. The coffee was a bit lackluster. It was lukewarm, but they dressed it up a bit with the whipped topping and caramel sauce. The cheese curds were probably the best item that we ordered. There seemed to be many old classics on the menu as well as a lot of exciting options. I was struggling with what to order as they offered the beef hot shot that was my favorite decades ago. I decided to try something new and went with the jalapeño popper, grilled cheese with a side of applesauce. I can't remember what my husband ordered, but it was some type of sandwich. we waited quite a while for our food, but we were in no rush and like I said, I believe the person was working there all by themselves. It wasn't until after my sandwich was done, but they realized they were out of applesauce no big deal and I ordered the coleslaw instead. The food arrived, and I could tell immediately that I was not going to like the coleslaw... It honestly looked rancid. I did try a bite and decided that it was not for me. I don't necessarily know that it was bad, but it did not taste good. My sandwich was ok but I only ate half of it. My hubby? He said his was fine and ate it but honestly the guy will eat anything without complaints. I started the meal excited and wanting to come back and try everything but but the end I don't need to go back at all. It's really sad and I hope I was just there on an off day. The food is great- classic diner breakfast fare, with the biscuits being 11 out of a 10 scale. The servers were very kind, but the service itself was very slow (about 50 minutes from sitting to food on the table). I would eat here again but would recommend going when you're not under any time constraints. read more

Nice place, very quaint and family friendly. I was tempted to get breakfast (which is served all day), but my waitress suggested the club. She was spot on, the sandwich came out piled high with a side of hot fresh French fries that absolutely hit the spot. The food was terrific and the service was very friendly and efficient. We went here for breakfast 4/1/23 the food was great. It was formerly known as KJ Cafe but new owners took over and really redecorated and improved the appearance. You would not recognize the interior, new tables new paint and at least the men's restroom has been remodeled. I was not overly impressed with the service Saturday but they where extremely busy. The bunny rabbit was there and there was a wait to be seated. I am sure once things settle down and the new staff get more experience the service will improve. I don't know the hours so I can't comment on that but we will be going there for breakfast again. The price was reasonable and the quality and quantity was great. When the service improves it will be a 5 star restaurant! read more

UPDATE to my 4/15 review... My wife & I went to Alleyway Cafe for the second time on 4/27/23. We were again promptly seated, and our server Marnie took our order & got us our fancy drinks (water for me, water WITH lemon for my wifey). This time, I had the Scramble Bowl (which my wife had gotten a couple weeks prior), and wifey got The Basic. Marnie twisted my arm, and FORCED ME (OK, maybe not....she offered) to take a 2nd egg on my Scramble Bowl. This time (on a Thursday around 9AM), we received our food in about 15 minutes. It was perfect. My Scramble Bowl was quite big....bigger than the one my wife had received a couple weeks ago. I'm guessing that this was due to the extra egg that Marnie forced me to order (OK, asked me if I wanted it). Their sausage gravy has plenty of sausage in it, and has a great flavor. We WILL be back! My wife suggested that we should become "regulars." read more

Stopped in on a Thursday for lunch. All day breakfast had me excited was seated at 11:45. At 12:40 they said they were starting our food. It would be 7-8 minutes. We decided better to leave than to have our food cooked in 7-8 minutes after waiting almost an hour. Water was cold. Thats all we had. read more

To be honest, we had eaten here under the previous owner most every Saturday morning for years. When ownership changed hands, we tried the location several times and weee disappointed. Today we tried again. Wow! Huge improvement. Good job staff. Appreciate you all. Keep up the good work. We will be back and encourage others to try this business again. Very sad, another Germantown restaurant is failing. And this one had all the components to be a successful diner. Went there yesterday after the NHS induction ceremony and was served by a nice young man who tried very hard but was not backed up by his coworkers at all. They treated him so bad, I can only assume they are all siblings. This poor kid got ZERO help from the useless females he was working with. Food was mediocre at best but the attitude of the staff was abhorrent. NOTHING came our of the kitchen right, when it finally did come out. PLEASE hire adults who can supervise and run a TEAM. read more

Tried to go to the Alleyway Cafe in Germantown for breakfast. Waited 25 mins for someone to take our order (the waitress said they had a server meeting?) then waited another 35 mins for barely warm food. Other waitresses could clearly see that we had been waiting longer than most in the restaurant, however, no one bothered to check on us. I had very high hopes, finding a small hometown breakfast spot & those were dashed quickly. The manager came out after we received our barely warm food to apologize & didn't give much of a reason for the wait, cold food or lack of service. We left without eating. Pretty bummed as it looked like a cute little spot, but maybe you just need to be local. read more

Service was (Lindsay) great. Super sweet. But the food was a big NO Biscuits and Gravy had hard cold biscuits, couldn't even cut with my fork or a knife. Consistency of a cracker. Didn't have more than one bite. Omelette was eggs folded over RAW chopped vegetables. Would not recommend. read more

The service was absolutely awful. We arrived at 10:50, there was about 7 open tables. All of which were clean however the host waited 10 minutes after we got there to seat us in a table that had been open and clean the entire time we were waiting. We then waited till 11:45 to receive our food after placing our order immediately after sitting down. Asked for the check as soon as our food arrived. Didn't receive it till 10 minutes later and then was charged for another tables food. Not a place I would ever recommend. read more

I have been visiting the Alleyway since they opened for their Biscuits and Sausage Gravy breakfast. There has been a gradual downgrading in the quality of this item in the past three months. Originally, the dish was beyond exceptional; very large pieces of pork sausage, soft biscuits and very flavorful gravy. Today I ordered the same with an accompanying sunnyside up egg. The biscuit was quite hard--possibly a day old--very few and little sausage pieces and bland gravy. I was told that they have changed chefs and the current one was a bit careless. I am becoming very disappointed as this place was way above ordinary in the beginning and I have introduced it to several friends. One thing that hasn't changed however, is the service. The staff are very cordial. My server today, Andrew, was professional yet very friendly and attentive. I hope the owners read this review and make changes in the quality of their food. read more
