The worker went on about how they take the tip automatically after you leave and kept interrupting me every time I tried speaking to her. This place was unfortunately a huge disappointment. We came at 11:30 on a Saturday and ordered 2 regular dishes, which took over an hour to arrive. When we asked about, we received a very rude answer that essentially blamed the customers for not knowing what's going on back of house. Lastly, when the food did arrive, it was very mediocre. We had the Shishito peppers (special), Wild Mushroom Cavatelli and two helpings of the Butternut Squash (substitutes the summer corn) & Cauliflower vegetables dish. So Good!! This place had one of the best fried chicken sandwiches I've ever had. The sourdough bread grilled on a cast iron and served with Edamame Puree mixed with jalapeño and olive oil is phenomenal. Took a trip to the Brooklyn Brewery (that review will be coming). But before that we decided to grab a bite to eat in that neighborhood and descended upon a small but busy restaurant ALLSWELL (great name). I'll be brief: OUTSTANDING FOOD!! The Crispy Sourdough app is just delightful! It was light, fresh and aromatic and just a divine sensation on the palate. The combination of radishes, puréed edamame and Thai basil (an anise flavor) just sent me into the stratosphere. All eaten together on fresh, house made sourdough bread served crispy & piping hot! Unbelievable! I love it. Such a great start to the meal. Wife had the Spaghetti Carbonara special and I had the Kraut Burger. She enjoyed the carbonara. Seasoned well, flavor was nice and the portion size wasn't crazy like some other places. My burger was cooked perfectly and with the addition of a few slices of bacon , I was back in heaven! I made a reservation for some of our guests via an indie hospitality conference I run (about 15 people) with Allswell's events coordinator. About a week or two before our reservation, the GM reached out for credit card info and I was met with frank rudeness when asked if the reservation would still be OK if we for some reason had drop-out guests.. The night of, low and behold, many of our guests could not make it. I alerted the GM who said we would still be charged for the original amount of diners..this was totally understandable. My issue, though, was the lack of hospitality + politeness // disrespect shown by the GM. I felt like I was the one who was accommodating HIM. HOW BACKWARDS! Food was O.K. Experience was terrible. Our server was kind and attentive. I will never go back due to the GM's attitude. Can't help but think it starts from the top.....all is NOT well. read more

Such a cozy space, like a mountain lodge in the middle of Williamsburg. I had their Cali burger and subbed a portabella mushroom for the meat. It was a good sandwich, with a notably delicious bun. 3.5 but I round up. Been here a bunch of times. Allswell had good food for brunch and dinner, albeit a pretty limited menu. The burgers are good, according to Hubs (I wouldn't know, I don't eat red meat). I like that they always have some healthier options aside from a kale salad. The cocktail and beer menus are good, and the drinks are great. I love the decor of this place. It is an old diner, with wide-plank flooring and crazy wallpaper. It's really quite a nice looking restaurant, yet casual enough for a random weekday dinner. There is a communal table (not a fan), three booths, regular and bar seating. Keep in mind that Allswell is a small space, there is practically always a wait (especially it being a better restaurant on Bedford). This brings me to my next point - the waitstaff. The service is just - lacking. On a few occasions, I have waited for somebody to take my name or just acknowledge I was there for over 10 minutes. One time, I even walked out. The waiters tend to be pretentious, and it's a shame. There are other restaurants that are just as good and just as nice right down the block that don't make you feel that your presence is an inconvenience, but I digress. It has never really been a deterrent, just an annoying reality of dining here. This is a good spot in the neighborhood, however, I wouldn't go out of my way to eat here, it's not spectacular. Also, if you are sensitive to snooty service, avoid. If you don't really care (I don't) then just have the correct expectation and you will probably enjoy. read more

This is my favorite place in the neighborhood. A short walk from the hustle of the Bedford L train stop, Allswell is an unassuming neighborhood spot you could pass by without noticing. And yet, if you are fortunate enough to take a peek inside, you are greeted by a friendly staff, a relaxed atmosphere and, most importantly, great food. In many ways, this restaurant personifies the best of Brooklyn - kind, inviting, unpretentious. As many have noted the burgers and chicken sandwich are fantastic, but don't sleep on their brunch either. read more

Soooo my family and I hit up a local Art exhibit over on 12th and then stopped in for a late lunch brunch. We had to wait a bit but let me say this. I have NEVER EVER encountered a hostess who took the time to be as attentive and sweet as ours was!! When we got seated our server Justin was on it and got our orders in and was super accommodating (cause we did have a few changes) the food was deeelish Eggs Benedict/ Cali Burgers/ Chicken Sandwich w/ avocado fries were crisp and just salty enuf and Bourbon Coffee Honeyyyyyy I cant wait to stop by for the frozen Tequila situation i noticed on the way out!! The food here is standard Williamsburg American gasto grub. A little over salted, over buttered, style over content etc. It's a nice enough place to gather with friends however I shall not be returning after the audacious lie given to me by the young lady working as the maitre d a couple of Friday nights ago. Four of us were seated on a side table on an early Friday evening. Two of the seats were against the wall and the other two were short bar stools. I wanted to be able to enjoy my meal in comfort (not too much to ask for I believe) so asked my waiter if I could swap the stool for a chair. He said he'd go and check if that was ok. He did not return. Waiting a further 10 mins I then asked the maitre d. The entire middle table, which seats about 10 people was empty, so there were plenty of empty chairs for me to swap with. What she told me next was just bizarre. She claimed that the middle table had been completely reserved and that the people were 'an older generation and had requested chairs' with their reservation. Who makes a reservation at a restaurant, and explains they are old and that they want chairs? Chairs do typically come as standard at most restaurants. I did get to swap the stool with a chair (from somewhere else, not the middle table) so, although it was a bit ridiculous to plead for one, it was ok. Me and my friends dined for about 2 hours, patiently waiting for the 10 'old people' to shuffle into Allswell and take up their geriatric residence on the middle table. Would they need their burgers and ricotta flatbreads liquified and mushed up to be able to eat them ? Would their false teeth be able to handle their bacon strips? Well, no party of old people came into the restaurant. Shortly before leaving two separate groups of four were seated on the middle table. They were definitely of the 'younger generation'. This still left a few empty chairs. What a silly lie the maitre d had peddled, all because they didn't want me to have a chair. Alls not well when you have to perch on a stool for over an hour. So if you wanna try out this spot remember the golden rules: 1. Book ahead. 2. Ask for chairs. 3. Explain you're really old. read more

Shy of three stars - but here's hoping Allswell remedies the operational flaws that kept lots of reviewers (myself included) from receiving their food in a timely manner. We sat at the bar. Big error - when you choose to idle away the quieter stretches of the forty-two minutes between placing an order and being served - by reading some of Allswell's nastier reviews outloud within earshot of the bartender. To her credit, the cocktail meant to tie us over was excellent; unfortunately, her kitchen staff failed her, and she was at the sheepish receiving end of our glowers, grumbles and stomach rumbles. We skipped sides and desserts, for fear of another logjam, when it became clear that the entree wait had passed a reasonable threshold. Too bad, because the mediocre food could have used (but did not receive) a hand up from the service. $5 - $12 for tasty-sounding, bar bites (primarily fried greens and offal); entrees hover in the $20-$30 range. My chicken-and-dumplings ($23), served in a buttery pool of cubed and roasted butternut squash trumped his duck breast and brussels ($28), although we agreed in the aftermath that Williamsburg's middle-brow gastropub scene (ref. The Bedford, Rye) has a long way to go before it rivals Manhattan's offerings. read more

Here's the thing about Allswell: when it opened, it was easily a 5-star restaurant. The food was great, the atmosphere was cozy yet trendy, and the service was good. But this was months ago, and living just down the street from Allswell, I've watched it slide way, way, way downhill. Allswell's menu consists mostly of small plates. So, when my husband and I decided to stop in a week ago for a small dinner (3-4 small plates) + drinks, we expected to be in-and-out within an hour. We ordered immediately and waited--no joke--45 minutes for our drinks to come out. When we complained, we got an apathetic "sorry, they're coming" from our waiter. It took another 15-20 minutes for our small food order to make it to the table. And while the food was generally good, it was not good enough to compensate for the overall experience. (If you're planning to make the trip despite this review, the shark fin pasta was too salty, but the farro salad was excellent). Overall, I'm sad to give Allswell such a low rating, but I promise you, every lack-of-a-star is deserved. We will not be going back for dinner until something actively changes here. read more

Anyone who knows me has heard me talk about how much I love Mugs, so dining at a twee eatery across from my beloved purveyor of pubgrub gave me the guilties. But overall, I was a fan. First off, there were some Issues. Number one being that I came in the mood for a good cocktail and couldn't make heads or tails of the drink menu. Yeah, I get that you update your menu every day on Tumblr so it has to look JUST SO. But am I seriously supposed to know what the shit something made with "Old Overholt, Averna, Dolin Dry, and Peychauds" is? How about a margarita on the list? Or at least ONE drink made with vodka--even that kind that tastes like bison grass like they have at Five Leaves (not exactly a watering hole for the hoi polloi). I resorted to an black IPA because I couldn't understand any of their drinks. Which annoyed me, because needless to say I would have paid less for one at Mugs.(#whitepeopleproblems) The other major issue was where we were seated. Now, I appreciate any restaurant in Williamsburg that's bangin' at 6:45 on a Saturday, when most people are still sleeping off their huevos rancheros. However, we were seated at what appeared to be a footstool flanked by two mini footstools, right outside the bathroom. About 15 minutes into the meal, my date requested we be moved, as our table smelled "like pee cakes and the toilet." I don't exactly know what pee cakes are, but the poor tender-hooved waiter looked like Carson the Butler if Lady Mary had asked him to fetch her a glass of Cisco Red with a beer back. After several sets of whispered consultations, the hostess came over tell us we'd be moved to the next available two-top. A few minutes and apologies later we were. Onto the high point of the evening. Food! Fried brussel sprouts with honey were super fantastic. The smoky grilled sardines served with the head on were another highlight. The trout spread on raisin toast with arugula was perfectly executed--second only to the broccolini with whole, toasted almonds and shaved pecorino. The food came out in a timely fashion and the waitstaff were attentive and accommodating despite the crowds--always a rare find this side of the BQE. While it won't replace Mugs in my book, Allswell definitely ended well. Post-script: Bathroom reconnaissance revealed that there are, in fact, no "pee cakes" at Allswell, but rather Meyer's Clean Day geranium-scented soy candles, specifically designed to align your pee chakras Also, the lemon curd with shortbread thing was really good. read more

I live in the neighbor so I've been here quite a number of times. I normally stop by for weekends for brunch or dinner. A few Sundays ago I decided to get to brunch early-about 11:15 am. The place was only half full at that time so I didn't think there would be a problem getting a table for just myself. The "host" regarded me as if I were not fit to dine there either because I was alone or perhaps because I didn't look like the rest of the hippie/grunge movement in there. He said there was room at the bar and I could sit there. Frankly, I didn't make the effort to get there early to sit at the bar and I told him I'd prefer a table! Once seated, the same guy came by to pour me some foul tasting tap water and proceeded to place it on the dirty table that clearly was not wiped down after the previous diner. He was obviously put out when I asked him to wipe down the table as he continued to regard me with disdain. Once the waitress decided to finally come over after another 10 minutes I received my pulled pork sandwich and salad fairly quickly. It was delivered from a tall, thin guy from the kitchen with wild hair. He was the only one that asked me if I needed anything else. I ate as flies swarmed all around (gross) and when I was finished the same guy picked up my plate. Not once did the waitress ever come back or ask how my meal was, if I needed anything.... After everything, the bill was brought to my table without me requesting it or an inquiry as to whether or not I wanted anything else. Best part, as I was leaving the skinny jean wearing host said not a word. I was the one that said goodbye and thank you which he barely acknowledged. The service was HORRIBLE this time around and usually it's pretty good but they really fell off that morning. The "Host" and I use that word so loosely because he was anything but should be fired immediately. He was incredibly rude and provided zero customer service!! I will go back again because the food is always wonderful but I plan to speak with the manager next time I visit. He is very gracious so not sure why he has these ingrates working there. read more

For their sake, I hope the "ex-Spotted PIg" hype and location on Bedford Ave. don't lead the NYT to visit anytime soon. The only thing Allswell and TSP have in common is the wait (walk-ins only), and the faux-pubby decor. The service and FOH staff at Allswell is excellent. The kitchen is horrifying. As in, one of my worst meals in New York this year. We showed up at 8:20 tonight. Were informed there would be a 1.5hr wait. The host took our number graciously and we went elsewhere for a drink. They called within about that time. The menu and cocktail menu look great - almost everything is appealing. When the arugula, beet, blue cheese, and apple salad showed up without either of the first two ingredients, our server graciously returned it and brought out one that looked great. Our group's other two appetizers were fine. No more, no less. The cocktails, solid. When the entrees showed up, I wished that we had let the salad issues go. We had one order of the "spiced" beef brisket, the pork, and the rigatoncini and veal. The pasta dish was the best - it was only heavily oversalted. This was a welcome respite from the pork, the loser of the night, tough and stringy as leather, bland and underseasoned. The "spiced brisket" was one of the more hilarious items I have been served; it was flaccid, bland, fatty, and certainly not "spiced". We left the restaurant with half of each plate unfinished. I admit, perhaps we should have expressed our criticism to the FOH team at the time - as they seem to give a damn - but at this level of kitchen incompetence, it's not their issue to solve. Allswell will do fine anyway, as I suspect the Spotted Pig hype and reverse B&T will keep them in solid trade for a few years before word gets out. But if your main concern is the quality of your food, this neighborhood can do much better. read more

This place was supposed to be in my neighborhood at The Dean or whatever, but the chef lucked out with a cute Swiss hunting lodge-feeling location in Williamsburg. I met my friend for lunch there, and it was a good experience. I loved the gravlax and a bloody mary enhanced with bread-and-butter pickle juice. The squash soup was a little weirdly executed (lumpy with big chunks of sausage in it) but tasty. It seems the menu is always changing depending on what's in season, so you're taking a gamble. I have eaten there once before with my husband for oyster happy hour, and I would return again. Love it! read more

Very disappointed... not impressed at all. Almost all of the entrees were unavailable! I think there were only 3 of the 9 entrees available and there were several unavailable appetizers too. What' s particularly troubling is that I read through all the other Yelp reviews to learn that my experience was not unique, but quite the norm! You would think that the owners would do something about that... So my girlfriend did order one of the available entrees, the Pasta with Broccoli Rabe, which was quite good; however, it arrived 5 minutes before her appetizer! WTF? I ordered the mushroom toast which was delicious and I thoroughly enjoyed it. As mentioned, the three available entrees were the liver, pork loin (both of which I had no desire to try) and pasta. Since my girlfriend was having the pasta, I chose another appetizer, the potted trout, which was alright, but not great. I wouldn't order it again, but at least it wasn't offensive. For dessert, I had the lemon curd which was lovely. My girlfriend had the chocolate cake with toffee sauce, but we didn't like it much because it was too dry and we were expecting a moist and warm chocolate cake. The service was cordial, but not warm or inviting. They all seemed to be overwhelmed, perhaps due to understaffing. The restaurant seems to suffer from poor planning and poor management, i.e. entrees arriving before appetizers, long waits, poor service, and it's not mentioned on the menu, or anywhere for that matter, that they do not accept AmEx. What's more, Allswell's concept comes off as a little "try hard." They want it to feel like the great Williamsburg restaurant/bars such as Walter Foods, The Dresssler, Hotel Del Mano, Moto, Five Leaves or Oyster, but they fail miserably. I don't think they invested enough in the interior design. For example, the bar is made of what appears to be cheap pine wood, not a classy oak or cherry like other local places. Even though I probably won't be going back there any time soon, I applaud there efforts to bring creative and unique cuisine to Williamsburg. I just wish they had done some better planning. I'll give Allswell another try in a couple months to see if any of the problems I mentioned were corrected. After all, I imagine that a lot of the food is really good... when it's actually available. read more

I stumbled upon this gem on our Williamsburg shopping day and I'm happy we went in! Such a great little spot and there was very attentive service. The brunch menu was on the small side but I am a big fan of concise menus - I don't want to have to read a novel to get my food. I had the beet and goat cheese salad and was very impressed, and well worth the $11. The iced coffee was also fantastic!! I would love to go back for cocktails - maybe next time! read more

I had high hopes for this place but really it's just good. Not great. The menu was one of the most pedestrian brunch menus I had ever seen. I ordered the only thing that seemed special: smoked trout on ricotta on toast. It was good. Great, even. The salad was quite pedestrian, however. It was a "lemon-caper" salad, but it seemed to be nothing other than parsley and onion. I must point out that they had no wait on a beautiful Saturday afternoon. Love the space but sadly that's where the love ends. * The bar was wiped down with a dry cocktail napkin after the couple before us finished their meal. That can't be sanitary. * The entrees took 35 minutes to come out. * The food was crazy salty. * A burger with cheese and bacon is $18. That's $2 less than The Spotted Pig. I'll just say The Spotted Pig burger works hard for its money and deserves every penny. We were comped a round of drinks after we mentioned the salty food but after all that time and money spent it just wasn't enough to make us feel better. I think what's most irksome is that the place is crowded, there's a line, and the menu seems so promising. If $13 artisanal cocktails, English peas, and an $18 burger are on your menu, you should deliver a quality experience. The more humble Enid's up the block is a better bet. This place does not deserve the attention it gets. read more

This is one of favorite cosy pubs in Williamsburg for consistently good food and drinks. The staff are helpful and atmosphere relaxed even when busy. However, I'm really disappointed by the management's new approach to using cards to pay bills. They charge each person that uses a card 3% of the group's total bill. Split the bill five ways, the restaurant adds an additional 15% on top of the total group's bill in card fees. The bill doesn't clearly highlight how the charge is applied. You need to spot it yourself and the staff don't tell you this additional charge is being applied. Sad to say, I won't be returning in the near future. read more

Quality ingredients with a simple menu... have tried about 8 items on the menu so far and have not missed yet. My fav is the fried oysters - light batter with a clean taste that tells me they care.
