Items sampled: Pecan Pancakes Crispy Chicken Sandwich 'Hipster' and 'cute' were never really words I associated until I walked into Bedford Avenue brunch and dinner spot Allswell on a warm Monday morning only to find the relative newcomer playing The Decemberists a bit louder than necessary in a room that looks somewhere between a country inn and a cabin in the woods...or perhaps the set of a Wes Anderson film with all sorts of homey wallpaper and lamps lining a the long wooden bar. Largely unoccupied save for a two other tables and greeted by a young woman named Adriana who, along with the bartender, represented the front of the house as Chef Smith and one other young man ran the kitchen it did not take long to peruse the concise menu and perhaps twenty minutes and a few cups of coffee later my two plates arrived; one sweet, one savory - both simple and both textbook "American" fare done well with the a split breast of juicy, crunchy chicken on a house made bun in one hand and an airy flapjack with just a bit of buttermilk plus a whole lot of pecans and pure maple syrup in the other. With a menu that changes daily based on the market and the chef's whim Allswell is not out there to reinvent the wheel, but then again if you can nail the classics you don't really need to. read more

Eh. What's the fuss about? Lukewarm service. Food trickles out. Took forty minutes for our entrees to hit the table. In that time, we watched the table next to us finish their apps, entrees, and work into a heated argument. Our server sleepily told us our food was piling up in the window. Cold food, which wasn't that exciting anyway. Your average williamsburg joint. If you're gonna struggle to get seated anyway, go to Traif. At least the food and service is good. Why Come Here? Interesting seasonal dishes, a lively yet chill atmosphere that's quintessentially Williamsburg Right amount for 2: 2 entrees or 2 apps and 1 entree If you were to list everything stereotype of a Williamsburg restaurant, you'd likely find that Allswell has most of the boxes checked. An ever-changing New American menu derived from local and seasonal ingredients. Music that people cooler than you listen to. A dimly lit space that patches together too many elements (is it a farmhouse? a German beer hall? why are there 11 different wall papers?). And yes, our server was wearing a plaid shirt and black rimmed glasses. So what makes this one worth the trip? In addition to its own twists, you could say alls(done)well (sorry). The menu of about a dozen items contained many interesting dishes on our visit and in a rare turn of events the entrees actually outshone the appetizers. It was also pretty reasonably priced with only two dishes topping the $20 mark. And perhaps most refreshingly, the service was knowledgeable and attentive and lacked the airy "too-cool-to-wait-on-you" vibe often emitted in these types of establishments. The extensive and original cocktail list is also worth a try, although you'll likely find that every drink contains at least one ingredient you have never heard of. Fortunately, nearly all of them can be replaced by the words "bitter Italian liqueur." If you're still concerned about what to get, feel free to order the tart and slightly sweet Merry Well with confidence. As for the menu, below are my thoughts on what we tried. It changes daily, so you may not see any of these on your visit, but in case you do... Toasted Barley w/ radish, pecorino & olives: The toastiness of the barley and nutty percorino really come through. Definitely an earthy dish. Bosc Pear w/ colston basset, prunes & walnuts: If you like sugary appetizers, these pears are for you. For me, it was a little too sweet even with the cheese and walnuts to temper it. Beef Cheeks w/ lentils & horseradish: This is just a rich, meaty and satisfying dish perfect for the colder months. Ziti w/ kale, squash & walnuts: Two of my favorite vegetables, together in a pasta that pleases the palate on many levels. Stumbled into this place for a Saturday brunch and will definitely be back. I have to admit, we did wait a LONG time for the food but I think that's just the way it is here and it was well worth the wait. The eggs and swiss chard I ordered were perfect and my wife's rib sandwich was probably one of the best rib sandwiches we've had. Also, the fries. You HAVE to come for the fries. The servers were extremely attentive and friendly and the ambiance was great. I wouldn't remove stars for cash-only, I would just hit the ATM first. read more

I REALLY like a couple things about this place: the decor is, as other have noted, very cute. The oysters I had were the best I've had in Brooklyn for some time, and only $1 each at happy hour. That said... again, as others have noted, the service is lacking. When we first walked in there was no hostess. The bartender indicated we could sit wherever. Several minutes pass before we got a waitress's attention. It was very hard to flag her down to get a second round of beer. Plus... the happy hour here (at least the day we went) has several food options, but none of them are vegetarian. This seems weird. Is it so hard to put some nuts or olives or cheese up on the menu? I'd be more likely to try the place again if I knew my vegetarian partner wouldn't be going hungry. read more

I ordered the baked clams appetizer and two of the bartender's choice cocktails. The drinks were really great. One was like a negroni with rye, and the other was more of a sweeter-than-normal old fashioned with bourbon. The clams never arrived, but the staff was doing a shift change while we were there, so one server initially took our food order, and then another server took over for her. I figured the original server never put the order for the clams through, but worse things have happened in the world so no big deal. By the time our food arrived, I was ravenous, which was my fault for not eating anything earlier in the day. It took 45 minutes to get the fried oyster po' boy, burger, and chicken sandwiches, which was longer than we had expected but they were SO good! Really, all three of us killed our plates in minutes. Just as we were laughing about inhaling our dishes and being completely stuffed, the server comes back and drops off three small forks for baked clams and places a plate of baked clams on the table. I told him that we weren't going to eat them, but we would pay for them. They were $1 each and we only ordered six. We weren't mad or anything, just stuffed from eating all of our entrees. He had a distinct shift in demeanor as he took the plate away saying, "Yeah, they take a while to prepare." Then he comes back immediately to drop our bill with the $6 clams clearly written on the bill and then crossed out. It was uncomfortable because we didn't ask for the bill, I still had half a cocktail, and the guys were going to get another round as well. It felt like we had offended this guy by saying we weren't going to eat the clams, so we quickly paid cash for the bill, tipped 20%, and then included the $6 clam charge as extra tip for him, or to cover the cost of the clams anyway. He picked up our bill and stopped by again to say thanks after seeing the tip, which was nice. I thanked him and said, "You really didn't have to take the clams off. We feel bad," and he again said, "Yeah, it's just the baked clams take a while to prepare." C'mon, dude. It's listed as an appetizer and arrived an hour after we had ordered them and had completely finished our meals. The better response is, "Sorry about that," or, "We recommend calling an hour in advance for appetizers." read more

I've been here for brunch a number of times and always enjoyed the experience. It's usually really crowded, so expect a 30 to 60 minute wait. If you come early, around 10am when they first open, you'll be seated right away. Allswell is small, but really cute inside. The staff is always friendly and attentive enough to get what you need during a busy brunch session. They probably need more than one high-chair for kids, as the one they have is always in use when I stop by. My nephew was squeezed between me and my sister until it the other party left. The pancake is great - big and fluffy! Love that you can add bacon and two eggs to it for an additional cost. So good! I usually get the eggs benedict which are amazing here. The poached eggs are cooked perfectly. I hate when places under cook them and they're super goopy (gross!). Their hollaindaise is thick, creamy and lemony and best of all they make sure to cover the whole egg. The english muffin is something a little dry and hard to cut. My only wish is that they provide something more with the dish, like a salad or some potatoes - something besides just two eggs on an english muffin with kale and ham. I'm usually full afterwards, but I like tasting something else to break up the meal. The used to have these amazing little curry chicken pot pies. Maybe its a seasonal thing but they were so good!! And what fabulous timing, for within minutes of arrive, the storm moved in like a black cloud in a superhero movie. I'm not normally big on american food, but my friend was keen and our quartet seemed amenable. So I conceded. I had the spaghetti with parmesan and mixed veggies. It was very good, very rich. He was sweatin' for real-- like, soaked through the back of his shirt and wipin' his forehead with napkins, but because he was hustlin' to take care of everyone. This place is very cute. The kitchen closes around 3:30 (so right after the brunch rush), but we arrived around 3:20 something. The hostess was kind enough to sit us and we ordered quickly. The place is cute and just like most places in Williamsburg it does not believe in ac. haha The service was good. The place was relatively empty by the time we got our food. Much better than waiting 45 minutes for a table at Sweet Chick. I had the two eggs with sausage. The sausage was definitely on the salty side. The toast slices that came with my order were thick and nicely toasted. My friend had the avocado toast and she was pretty happy with her food. It look fresh and came with poached eggs on top. We were stuffed and were able to sit there for a while. Happy hour begins at 4 and we really considered it, but we were full. The deals seem pretty good, and the specials of the day are nicely written on the chalkboard. Loved the little wallpaper and the colors. This is a chill place. I loved this place. The price for a chicken sandwich is now $14. It used to come with fries. The fries are now $5. I hate this so much. And it's not because their rent went up, they have a 10-yr lease. They're just gouging customers. Avoid. Go across the street to Mugs for food as good with better prices. UPDATE: Allswell wrote me with the following: The restaurant industry as a whole is going through major changes and we are looking at those changes very thoughtfully. The increases for labor wages and quality local product have made our original model and pricing non-sustainable. We have been busy this last month recipe testing and preparing for some permanent menu changes we are really excited about. We are adding more options for the burgers and offering the chicken sandwich as a regular menu item on both the brunch and dinner menu. We want to offer our customers options for there meal without having to charge $19-$20 for a burger and fries. We feel by separating the fries and greens from the burger gives our customers the freedom to share sides and keep their check price down if so desired. The restaurant industry is a very tricky business. There is an increasingly smaller window for monetary survival. the $60 bottle of French wine was deeeeeeeeeelicious. the shrimp "caesar" salad was really tasty. the squid ink risotto was creamy and the soup was ridiculously hearty and delicious. i would never have thought to order the ricotta app and the bread was perfectly toasted and the ricotta was light and milky, a really great dish to go before the soup. the waiter was a little aloof but still sweet and his recommendations were on point. the place is beautiful, the lights, wood, bar, tables, everything comes together perfectly for that warm farmhouse-y American gastropub feel. i will def be back when i'm hungrier and the weather is less cold outside so i can stay longer instead of rushing home to cuddle! read more

We had really high hopes for this place when it opened since it's just two blocks away from our place. The menu looked delicious and upon peeking inside, the interior was just adorable. So the boyfriend and I went there for brunch early this morning; there was only one other table there at the time. There was no warm greeting when we walked in, just this kind of awkward silence as we searched the faces at the bar for someone that might work there. FOOD Lattes: we both got lattes and the milk was burnt to shit in both. Bacon and egg sandwich with side salad: the sandwich itself was acceptable, but perhaps not worth $12. You can get an amazing and huge sage-and-organic-egg sandwich at Five Leaves down the street for $7. Fortunately, they weren't stingy with the bacon (which was a $2 add-on). But the salad was literally whole pieces of lettuce with some dressing thrown on. And we found a HAIR on the plate. Gross, man. Gross. Pancake with bacon and eggs: everything was at least edible, but definitely nothing special. The pancake was made of some sort of cornmeal and was a bit dry. The bacon and eggs I could've done at home, and better. All in all, the food wasn't terrible, but truly wasn't worth the money. Our bill was $37.00 for mediocre food we could've gotten at Kellog's diner for probably half the price. SERVICE Everybody who worked at this place seemed like they were still asleep. I will admit, it was early for Williamsburg, only about 10:30am. But seriously, this is your job. Fake it if you have to. No smiles, no thank yous. The waitress finally said "thank you" when I said it to her first after clearing our plates! Totally lackluster and kind of made me not want to tip 20%, even though we did. I have to add here that after having worked in the service industry for many years, I pretty much always automatically tip servers 20%+. I came here with a friend for Sunday brunch. The food was okay, but what does that matter when the service sucks? There were open tables everywhere, and though I counted at least 3 servers, we were instructed to wait for a bit. Not a big deal, we were still feeling patient at this point and recognized an opportunity to snag a tasty drink at the bar before we sat down. After 20 minutes, they lead us to our table, and wandered off without handing over menus or pouring our water glasses. They brought us water and menus after ~5+ minutes (I got up to use the restroom and returned to water glasses if that's any indication). 15 more minutes to take our order--by now, we're talking 40 minutes with no food in sight in this restaurant. We placed our orders--my friend ordered the pancake (SINGULAR) with bacon and I had the summer vegetable sandwich. It took them 35 minutes to serve us our food; I know this because I was starving, and timed them. At one point I even flagged the waiter down to request an update. "Three more minutes", he replied, though it turned into ten without any further notification. There's no reason why it would take 35 minutes to make a sandwich and a pancake when the restaurant isn't even close to full, and everybody is getting the same brunch dishes! That said, the food was okay, which is why they're getting 3 stars instead of just the one. The olive bread was fantastic, though my friend and I were infinitely puzzled as to how they justify $8 for one (lukewarm! it was sad, really) pancake. There are hundreds of restaurants in this area; they should really get it together if they want to stick it out for awhile. One of the better burgers I've had in New York! Very fresh and cooked to perfection. We also split the warm house bread with homemade ricotta cheese: YUM! Came here with a friend one night after wandering around Williamsburg. We had heard good things about this place for brunch but decided to check it out to grab a quick bite for dinner. Our waiter was also super friendly and courteous, which always a plus. I like the vibe in here... it seems kinda trendy but simultaneously laidback. Pretty small inside, but still vibrant and lots of activity. We just moved nearby and wandered in last weekend with friends in search of a go-to neighborhood spot. It was exactly what we were looking for! They sat us right away in a cozy booth, and we immediately ordered some of the homemade bread and ricotta. I am craving more of it while I write this review. For dinner I had the roast chicken, which had the perfect amount of crispiness on the outside that I know I could never achieve at home. It was a large portion, but I had plenty of eager helpers at the table to polish it off. For dessert we all split the butterscotch pudding- think rich, creamy-smooth and not overly sweet . Great atmosphere and decor. We didn't have to wait long to get seated for brunch because we opted to sit at the bar. Bartender was attentive and friendly and made a mean La Caffe Vita (coffee cocktail.) My boyfriend loved his pancakes + eggs and bacon. My flatbread with ricotta and kale was good but I probably would have thought about the fact that I was more or less ordering pizza for breakfast. HOWEVER, there were so many FLIES! It was gross! I'd look around at any given time and see 3-4 close by. All the windows were closed, except one with a screen and the door didn't stay open when people came in. The burger was tasty; not too complex, but simple where the true taste comes through. The soups and salads are delicious and well thought out. Brunch is fun at Allswell; the space is amazingly inviting and bright in the morning. They serve great bloodies. At night, it's cozy and has a terrific ambiance. I think it's a good place for date night due to the lighting. They have good deals at happy hour for wine and beer. They have a full bar and make a pretty good Old Fashioned. This place is the best. They make beautiful, simple and incredibly flavorful food, with a focus on fresh ingredients. The menu is reasonably priced for the neighborhood and has options varied enough to please almost anyone (I believe much of the menu changes daily). The room is quirky and cozy and has a fun energy. And the service is warm, accommodating and efficient. Allswell is useful for just about any situation, too. I've been there for breakfast and lunch meetings, weekend brunch, dinner with family, dates, and drinks + snacks at the bar. It somehow always fits the bill. I felt compelled to write this review because of an experience last night that went above and beyond what I've already come to expect from this special place. I had to sort a last minute 12-person dinner and Allswell once again delivered. I called around noon and was able to reserve the big table in the middle of the room (the host I spoke to mentioned they normally request more than same-day notice for a party this large, for next time). There was no issue when our party grew to 14 by the time we arrived, and the staff helped us all fit comfortably. We ordered small plates for the table that were fantastic and easy to share: burrata, carrots, brussels sprouts and cauliflower. So excellent. Everyone got different mains, mostly burgers, and raved about the food and vibe. We stayed for over 3 hours, sang happy birthday (twice...sorry!), had to split the bill between a few cards and cash, and yet still, our server (Amy, I think? Apologies!) and everyone who helped us remained patient and kind. It felt like they were genuinely happy to have us. Thank you, Allswell! Please don't ever change. On New Years Eve, we had no reservations; she told us it would be a 2 hour wait; we left; she chased us down the street to tell us that someone canceled and sat us 5 minutes later. Came here on a Saturday night with Boyfriend and a buddy to have a solid meal before a night out. It was our first time and despite fair Yelp reviews, we decided to give it a swing. Made a reservation and were promptly seated when we arrived. The two guys I was with can be chatty and loud, wanted to give a shout out to our wonderful server (cute redhead) who not only put up with their jokes (some funny, some not so much) but was informative and very sweet. So why just two stars? The food. Allswell has a different menu each night, which makes for some big swings as you order -- some great dishes and some that are misses. Sadly, we had some high-highs and then some low-lows which made the overall meal inconsistent. Ideally, I see Allswell succeeding if they change their format to include a very small list of staple entrees + sides that are 'knockout-good' and then have a rotating menu of small plates and special entrees. This keeps the 'fresh and new' concept that they're looking for, but gives diners options they know they can fall back on. As for the dishes we had that night. A short review. iced jonah crabs -- terrible. There was so little meat and the work to get to those minuscule morsels was brutal. Cracking the shell was like sending flying shrapnel all over the table. Not fun. ricotta with chili bread -- fair. The bread was inventive and the pairing was good, but the whole thing lacked salt. Wonder if anyone in the kitchen had tasted this together, certain they would agree... To be honest, you could probably put a nice salted crust on the bread and fix this, but as is it was a bit bland. smooth shark app -- the "winner" of the apps. Great flavors, good size. shaved porcini with egg, borage and caciocavallo -- this was fair. Again, it lacked "something" as it was just a bit bland. The quality of the ingredients used were great -- the porcini was flavorful -- but it needed something to punch it up. Also, it's worth noting that this plate looks beautiful. Hate to fall back on a brooklyn favorite but if you put a little pork on this dish, it would probably sing (maybe some prosciutto?) burger -- flavorful, tasty and cooked really well. Fries were good. rabbit -- the dark meat piece was 'fall off the bone-perfect' while the lighter meat piece was bone dry. The vegetables were DELICIOUS. steak -- the green sauce on the steak was so, so good. Steak was cooked well and was flavorful. Wine menu was actually quite well priced and had some great value bottles on there. Hope Allswell can work out the kinks and then we'd be happy to come back and try again. read more

If you would like a dining out experience just go somewhere els. These people do not like to serve and they act like you are some kind of elitist for expecting basic restaurant service. I want everyone to be safe from Covid too.I'm a blue-collar person I do not eat out often. I do not want to be treated like I am somehow taking advantage of people by being out. I was eating outside by the way. They are using an app here to order AND pay, to just get a first glass of wine you have to give them your email and enter your credit card by hand. Of course they would also like you to start an account, and every restaurant is using some different apps of this is just getting crazy for us. This app is a little wonky and doesn't really give clear directions for how to order, or how to add to an order since part of dining out is that you add a drink and a side add another dish.r. I sat there for an hour and it turns out even though I got two glasses of wine my food order never went in. I also would've liked to of sampled the wine before I tried it but that is not an option when nobody comes to your table ever to check how you are. If someone had checked on me once I could've said where is my food, or did you get that order but no one came. It wasn't busy it was in the middle of the day at lunch. The three people working inside chatting pretty much the whole time. When I finally did ask I was treated like an idiot who didn't know how to use an app. I am an entrepreneur I have three businesses I am familiar with contemporary tech. The use of this app is a mistake and on top of it I really think the staff here needs a different attitude.Just order takeout and sit somewhere outside pleasant because you're not getting any additional service here for that big price tag. read more

The food was five stars. What I did not love so much is that it's a little too small and they don't seem to have good ventilation so you do smell like food when leaving. read more

Order the chicken sandwich with bacon on top. It was very fresh, very crispy and delicious! The sandwich is pretty big size and worth every penny. The bacon wasn't really necessary to do it justice, but it did add extra flavor :) read more
