OMG! The food here is soooo bomb. We tried the pork chops, the turkey chops, dressing, Mac and cheese, yams, potato salad, and the lemon cake. Not one complaint here. I only wish they had a location somewhere on the Westside, so I could go more often

Mrs Alma, you did it for me, momma. I'm from the south atlanta, to be exact, my parents from Tennessee deeply rooted, but babyyyyyyy let me tell you, you took me back home with this one. Everything I ordered was too perfect, even the stove top homemade banana pudding. My mother normally made hers in the oven, but that stove top is hitting. Your ambiance is beautiful and welcoming. Everyone was friendly, especially the young man at the front counter, and the young lady. Continue striving for excellence and serving the community. Great Establishment for sure! Didn't care for it. The food is bland. The Mac was cheese less. The cabbage was almost clear and not for me. The wings were missing a piece, the cornbread tasted like it was once frozen and reheated and honestly this whole dinner at this quick serve restaurant ("QSR") was just not worth it. The attitude of the owners daughter was terrible. No personality. My companion ordered peach cobbler which is served cold. He requested it to be warmed. They refused. He wanted it warmed in a non plastic container. This peach cobbler was $9. She offered to heat it up but charge $1 for the box. Hahahahah! We just paid $60+ for lackluster food and are insulted by a $1 extra to warm up the dessert. He returned it. She sent it back in a bag by her cashier who said nothing when she put it on the table next to us. He asked her to please take it and refund it. The owners daughter refused. He politely advised that by law she had to refund it. She finally did. I would NEVER return here again. NEVER. UPDATE: To the owner: You did come out front to rearrange the desserts and we did interact and you were unpleasant. No smile. No hello. You should stay in the kitchen. We should have left but his order was already placed. I prefer to patronize businesses represented by owners who have grace and are happy to have customers. We were highly excited to try your place. We regret adding any revenue to your business. It's an experience we are happy to forget. Based upon your disgraceful response, you confirmed every word in my review and how awful your attitude is towards people keep your business afloat.

The place itself was very well-maintained, clean, well decorated, and inviting. A group of us went there and ordered their lunch specials, which we found to be a bit pricey considering the portion size. We ordered the chicken wing lunch special, and was very disappointed when we were not given the whole wing...the drumsticks part of the wing was cut off of every piece...maybe because it was the lunch special? The service was okay...a lot of yelling going on when calling orders out to the kitchen. What I thought was a bit much was when some lady came out of the kitchen to yell at a customer to close the front door, because she doesn't feel like chasing flies! While understandable, there could have been a better way for her to ask the customer to close the door. Lastly, they made it very clear to clean up after yourself, as there was no table service available. Updated review: Based on the owner's response, she's correct! We should've gone across the parking lot to patronize Popeyes. Seeing that the pork chops were half cooked, the cornbread was dry and crumbly, and the Mac and cheese bland. I'd gladly pay for a big box at Popeyes then eat here again!

Super cute place. The decor is cozy. Dine in only available until lunchtime and they close at 5pm which is painful. Food was over all good. The fried catfish HELLA GOOD. Wasn't a fan of the side dishes but that spoon fruit lemonade was delicious. Service was great, staff friendly and food received in a timely manner. I will definitely revisit if I'm working too late.

I was in the area and had Alma's bookmarked on places to try. I'm glad I stopped by. Upon entry the decor was so modern and welcoming. It was very clean and the ventilation system was doing a great job I didn't smell anything frying. I got the catfish mac n cheese greens and corn bread muffin. Everything was full of flavor, seasoned and cooked just right. The customer service was even better. I totally loved my Alma's Place experience.

I wanted to love this place. $43 for oxtails at "market price " is obtuse. The three sides, macaroni & cheese (bland), yams (tasted like canned) and greens (full of stems), could have earned another star. In fairness, the portions were decent. I had enough for the next day. The flavor didn't really come through.

Ms. Alma was a pleasure to meet....My husband stopped off here for the first time and purchased the turkey croissant breakfast sandwich and the turkey chops and he said it was great...we will be back to try more items on the menu. This restaurant gets 5 stars from me because the food taste so GREAT!!! I've driven out of my way after work, several times, just so I can get a home cooked meal. The meat is never cooked until you place your order at the counter. It's always hot and delicious. I haven't tried every item yet, because I'm stuck on ordering the following things, which are a MUST TRY FOR YOU: Turkey Chops, Smothered Turkey Chops, Catfish, Chicken Wings, Macaroni and Cheese, Black-Eyed Peas,Corn Bread, yams, all the cakes and pies, etc. You will not be disappointed. Dined at Alma's over the weekend. If you want to have a soul food dining experience that will leave you full and even able to share your meal or have great leftovers this is the place to go. I didn't taste anything I didn't like. You also receive that down home hospitality from Alma and you may get to truly feel the love if she's not too busy cooking. Try the peach cobbler or sweet potato pie. The food is truly wonderful! read more

Great food no matter what time of the day that I visit. The young lady with the braces is always so friendly and always gives great suggest. The other young lady who is their, I think she is Hispanic can work on her customer services skills just a bit, I have encountered her twice and neither time was she pleasant. I will give it 5 if it wasn't for their high prices and the credit card fee of $2. Who making those desserts? Chef Ramsay or something? The banana pudding is delicious indeed but I paid $9 for like two small scoops of banana pudding, talk about a rip off. Stop being stingy with your portions. read more

I came here tonight with my friend and ordered the fried chicken meal with mac n cheese, yams and green beans (3 sides come with the dinner meals instead of two with the lunch). The food was great! Mac n cheese was seasoned just right and the yams were sweet and tender. They had a lot of different desserts available but I was too full to try any but I definitely will next time. This place is easy to miss in a shopping center across from the Popeye's parking lot but I suggest everyone check it out who wants to try some good, reasonably priced and portioned soul food! read more

So my first time walkin into Alma's Cookies today around 3:30 and they have no cookies. I don't want soul food, cakes, pies none of that. But the sign outside says cookies. So its a young brutha at the counter and he says. "Hello first time" and I reply yes he then says "these are our menus" I said thank you but I'll just have cookies. ANY cookies... "Sorry were all out" Ok so will you have them tomorrow. He then tells me "to call first cause she makes them in spurts"... Da fuk? Really? Ok so I guess we got us another one of those soul food spots that hit and miss and can never cover 100% of they own menu. Pork chops on the menu. But guess what........ We don't have pork chops today. Can you imagine walking into Roscoes Chicken & waffles and they say we all out of waffles? I'm asking you for the one item that's on the sign in the front of your building. Out of cookies but its a oreo cake in the window with tulips and shit on top... Dam guess I go to Mc Donalds and get me 3 for a dolla PS. Then I see the cookie lady peek out from the back with a spray bottle of Fabuloso. Da fuck is you cleanin? You aint cook shit. read more

Best soul food around!! Fried chicken was fresh and hot,no problem with the sides. Oxtails were great! You can tell the food is freshly prepared and not thrown in a microwave. Plus you can see into the kitchen as your waiting...It's a little pricey but that's expected for a place like this. As long as the quality and food remain the same the price won't matter. read more

I went yesterday before my shopping in Compton. The two sisters were friendly and explained the menu to me , since it was my first time there. I got the 3 fried chicken wings with mac n cheese, black eyed peas, and yams, also bought a big slice of chocolate cake. The food plus the service was excellent. I've found that Alma's has really good breakfast potatoes! Preferably the best I've had, next to my God Mothers home-fries, and if you know anything about me, you'd know that's a pretty hard ranking to place... I thought about why I like Alma's Breakfast potatoes so much, and I realized I'm vegetarian, but when you put a lil hot sauce on Alma's Breakfast Potatoes; they remind me of Fried Chicken!!! My family and I went here this morning for the first time. We were very happy with all the food that we ordered. Although we missed breakfast there were many options for lunch and dinner. We don't eat pork so we were very happy to hear that they don't put pork in any of the side dishes. I had the smothered turkey chops rice and gravy, and sweet potatoes & greens. Everything that we got was seasoned perfectly and the food was cooked to order. It took a few minutes to get our food but it was all worth it. I would like to start by admitting that I NEVER write yelp reviews no matter how good of an experience I've had at an establishment. However my consistent great experiences here drove me to write this review. This is my third time here at Alma's and their customer service is impeccable and consistent. This morning I am trying the Pumpkins Country breakfast with the potatoes (delicious) as my carb and biscuit (pretty good), and turkey Chops which are succulent and flavorful they are to die for. Everything I've tried in the past is delicious, next time I am going to go for a more healthy alternative such as their baked chicken or baked fish and veggies. Can't wait ! Wow! Found this place on accident. Walk in because I seen 2 sheriff's car outside which means there eating good lol. So I walk in and order the shrimp and grits and country potatoes. My stomach really Thank me for food I supplied it with. The smile on my face while writing this means I really enjoyed the food. I will be back, a must try. First time here, will not be my last!!!!!!! First off Brandon greeted us as we walked in,explained the menu, asked if we were first timers and just offered a warm welcome,, so even if the food had not been DELICIOUS ( it was wonderful) his warm reception would have gotten five stars.. Next Alma came and made sure everything was on point, and Corrine ( hope That's correct) came to our table and gave us a surprise treat , .. My husband changed his order after seeing a picture on the wall and it was changed with a smile . No pictures because I didn't take any , No reflection on anything or anyone .. We ordered fish , pork chop, yams, green, Black eyed peas and dessert to go, all seasons on point!!!!!!!! Servings were more than enough, we have food for tomorrow!! My husband was overly pleased and he's a critic of foods ,, Sweet potato pie was fresh and so good, We have not tried the other items, tea cake And coffee cake but I think we will be pleased.. Alma was a wonderful personable owner And she went above and beyond to make sure our first visit was a plus. Alma has always been known throughout the city of Compton as a great cook, and has finally found a storefront to call home

Meet the Business Owner: Corina M.

Corina (CookiegalC) Pleasant is a chef and Baker who learned from her grandmother, aunt, and mother. She also attended culinary school to further her education in food service, and has a dedication to her customers that is unmatchable. She has catered for over 20 years, and finally has established a home for she and her mother Alma's first restaurant in the great city of Compton, with southern hospitality at the forefront. Alma, our namesake began cooking at an early age and put into effect southern techniques she learned from her mother Annie and older sister Betty Jean who both were awesome cooks from Arkansas. Alma in turn shared what she learned with her 2 daughters, Yvonda and Corina. The baby girl watched her mom prepare food and desserts and was always intrigued as a very small child by what was done in the kitchen. From there grew a fascination that has grown into a career. Come and get some of our southern hospitality!

This review is for the Paramount location. I got a few items: Dino rib, pork ribs, brisket, sausage, mac and cheese and corn bread. I'll start with the positives. The mac and cheese and corn bread were decent. Also they took 15 minutes to give me all the varied food I ordered which should have been my red flag to run, but I decided to live dangerously and was punished severely for it. Now on to the travesty, the meat. The theme for today was dry, old and shameless. The pork was somehow undercooked and dry. Which if you can endure the cruelty, is actually kind of impressive. The brisket resembled beef jerky. I'm including pictures of the brisket since those speak much more eloquently than I can. I love to cook and I infamously over season my dishes. But all these meats were at a whole another level. Not salty but aggressively peppery and just ham handed. The rub was flavorful but it blew out my palette instantly. Please take this to heart: less is more. In terms of meat quality? Cheap. My Dad is a butcher, I can tell. Everything being reheated did the meat quality no favors either. The seasoning was further exacerbated because the ribs, both dino and pork, were almost entirely bone. So you have a ton of seasoning on a lick of meat. It was a recipe for disaster. And price? Expensive, especially for what I received. Insulting for what I received. I'll end it here. I don't want to waste your time like this place wasted mine.

Only then was I able to enjoy a soul food diner. The folks that work there are very nice. Management should have checked on the food and tasted it.

So where do I begin??? Its not often that you find a gem of a restaurant that not only exceeds your expectations with its food and menu offerings, but has an amazing ambiance and friendly staff. Although this is my first review of Alma's, I dined on the at the Grand Opening and several other times. Each and every visit, the food has always exceeded my expectations. So far I've tried the Fried Catfish, Oxtails, Pan Seared Catfish, and Fried Chicken. The side dish offerings include expertly prepared options including Candied Yams, Black Eyed Peas, Green Beans, Mac and Cheese, and Cornbread Dressing. The dessert menu is to die for!!! Too many to name. This family owned and operated eatery in the City of Compton is situated across the street from the Compton Courthouse, City Hall, and Sheriffs Station on the corner of Acacia and Compton Blvds. It shares a parking lot with Popeye's Chicken in a strip mall. Parking is tight sometimes depending on the time of day. The eclectic decor and immaculate dining room feels very homie. Alma's also has a full catering menu and can easily feed large crowds of 300-500 guests for events. Free beverages and water are a available with a Yelp check in. Food has no flavor, no seasoning. Customer service sucks, don't try to order your food over the phone because they don't allow it. Which means you have to drive there and wait in the roach infested restaurant forever until your food is ready. Not to mention that half the food on the menu is not even available. Everyone loves "Not your mamma kitchen" which is a few blocks down Compton Blvd. I figured I give Almas a try, but never again will I walk into Almas. Don't waste your money. Go to Not your mammas kitchen. Waaaayyy better!!!! PS. If your unhappy with this disgusting Fabuloso smelling place, don't write a review. The disgusting looking owner of this place will reply to every negative review with the same attitude that is given when you visit this nasty place. Great customer service, not to intrusive, just good at making the customers feel appreciated. The food was yummy, the dessert are amazing, I have a big sweet tooth, so my favorite is the strawberry short cake! Chicken, crunchy yummy, salmon to salty, yet still edible, :) Yams yummy, greens yummy, Mac & Cheese , yummy! I hope this restaurant continue to thrive, and keep being amazing! The food was amazing, I had the fried catfish with French fries, a side of macaroni and cheese and the fried Turkey chops because I couldn't decide. Everything was cooked to perfection, the seasoning is so flavorable, I suggested the bottle and sell it as an item on their menu, especially the catfish seasoning. The only negative is they need to print more menus, they had only one to review and order from so we had to wait and pass it around, this is tacky. However, the atmosphere is pleasant, the staff friendly and warm. I will definitely be back to try the oxtails. read more

Great food, period. This is a Compton staple, and it is right across from the courthouse. I have tried the breakfast sandwich, chicken and waffles, fried chicken plate, greens, green beans, mac, cheese cake, peach cobbler, sweet potato pie AND cheesecake, and it is all bomb. I hope to try everything on the menu because it never disappoints. Alma is lovely, and so is her staff. This is comfort food at it's finest. I took my uncle here for lunch to support local businesses and needless to say that, this is the BEST EATERY IN THE CPT!!!!! !!! The establishment was super clean, the staff are polite and professional to a tee!!! Everything just felt like home!!!! A must try here are the turkey chops entree with sides of your choice and the chilibeans with hot water cornbread. We even went all in on there delicious desserts!! We just happened to be in Compton for a few hours and I came across this restaurant. When I tell you the food here blessed my soul. We had the fried catfish Mac and cheese, fried pork chop, fried chicken wings, hand cut fries and yams. Everything was so flavorful and cooked fresh to order. I witnessed an elderly woman come in and return her fried turkey chops because she wanted grilled turkey chops. I had Alma's chicken and waffles for breakfast ($7.99). It was amazing! The chicken was flavorful with the right amount of crunch and the waffles were Delicious! You will not need to add syrup.
