    Smothered Rib plate
    Omena A.

I'm always excited to try new Black-owned businesses in my hometown, especially in a part of town that's nostalgic for me. I saw reviews complaining about the size of the restaurant, but I didn't find that to be true at all. If you've been to many non-franchise, small business restaurants, it's actually a decent size. Now, if you show up on a Sunday after church, you might feel differently. I went on Father's Day. The restaurant opened at noon, I arrived around 12:15, and by 12:45 every table was taken. I liked the ordering options. You can sit down and scan the QR code, use one of the kiosks, or order at the register. The staff was extremely polite. I especially love seeing teenagers working. There was a young man working behind the counter and serving tables, and everyone--from the cashier to the woman greeting guests--checked on us throughout our visit. The wait was longer than the app estimated. It said 30 minutes; our food took closer to 45. Thankfully there was a live DJ, and since it was Father's Day, I gave them grace. I do wish they had brought our drinks out sooner because we sat most of that time without them. Now, the food. These plates are not cheap. For two adults and a few extras, I spent around $120. Fried Chicken Plate (with collard greens, mac & cheese, and cornbread) The chicken was cooked very well. It was juicy, crispy, and golden. The seasoning was there, but very mild. Not flavorless, just safe. Enough for Grandma to nod in approval, but not enough to make the holiday menu. The collard greens were a no for me. If you like a more tart greens, you'll probably enjoy them. I prefer savory greens. The cornbread was soft, nicely colored, slightly sweet, and leaned more cake-like than traditional cornbread. The absolute star of the show was the mac & cheese. My boyfriend doesn't even like Gouda in mac & cheese, and he gave it a 10/10. Perfectly cooked noodles, creamy cheese sauce, and that little bit of browned cheese on top. They have definitely perfected the mac & cheese. Driving from Santa Clarita just for that? I'd do it. Smothered Ribs Plate (rice & gravy, candied yams, mac & cheese, cornbread) The ribs were incredibly tender. Whoever smoked them knows what they're doing. However, there was a flavor or seasoning leaving an after taste I didn't enjoy. The gravy also wasn't for me. It tasted homemade, which I appreciate, but I personally would have preferred barbecue sauce. The candied yams were soft without being mushy, but they weren't very sweet. Again, the flavor profile felt very safe. Being greedy, we also ordered the fried shrimp because the reviews raved about them. The shrimp themselves were quality--large, clean shrimp, not those tiny bargain-bin ones. But like the chicken, the seasoning was very mild. The tartar sauce, lemon, and hot sauce didn't really elevate it for me. I also ordered the Cajun green beans and baked beans. The Cajun green beans were the least favorite thing I ordered. I'm not sure what made them Cajun because there wasn't any noticeable spice. There was a smoky flavor (or something) that I didn't enjoy, and overall they just weren't good. The baked beans tasted canned, with what appeared to be ground turkey added. I ordered three cups of Kool-Aid. No refills were offered, and the cups were tiny. By the time we got our food, we basically had warm Kool-Aid. Considering how inexpensive Kool-Aid is, I think free refills should be offered for dine-in customers, especially if they're waiting 30+ minutes for food. No water was offered either. It looked like bottled water was available for purchase, but I feel sit-down restaurants should offer filtered water. To finish, I tried the banana pudding. It was good, but the batch we received clearly needed more time to set because it was a little runny. The flavor was there, though I would've liked more cookies. Overall, I'd give it a 6.5-7 out of 10. The customer service was top-tier, and that mac & cheese is absolutely worth talking about.

We felt like having comfort food so we visited "The Cultured Soul Kitchen" in Long Beach and boy they did not disappoint!! The food was delicious and very fresh. Be ready to wait a while. That's the only downside. Upon ordering we were advised it would take 40 minutes to get our food. It took a little over 40 minutes but the food was worth it. The Fried Chicken, Mac n Cheese, Collard Greens & Cabbage Mix, Cornbread and Waffles were AWESOME! Next time we will order online and pick it up. The customer service was great. The staff visited our table several times while we waited to see if we needed drinks or anything. There is an on-site DJ that played awesome old school music. There is an on-site parking lot as well. I highly recommend this restaurant. Special Note: The restaurant is closed on Mondays & Tuesdays.

I was just driving by and happened to come across this place, and I'm so glad I decided to stop! I ordered the catfish plate with greens, mac & cheese, and a side of cornbread. Everything was fresh, hot, and full of flavor. The catfish was cooked perfectly, the greens were well-seasoned, the mac & cheese was creamy and delicious, and the cornbread was the perfect finishing touch. They had great customer service. The lady realized she didn't fill my lemonade up to the brim and said oh no let me fill it up for you. I really appreciate that. It's always a great feeling to find a hidden gem by chance. I'll definitely be back!

April 29, 2026 Had a craving for Fried Shrimp and found this place on Yelp. Located on Anaheim near Long Beach Blvd, this spot has a parking lot. I ordered the Fried Shrimp dinner, which included Collards, Rice & Gravy and a piece of Cornbread. I also purchased a piece of Pound Cake. Took the meal home to devour. The Shrimp was perfectly fried with a delicious coating. Collards were cooked in smoked Turkey and had a wonderful taste with a nice vinegar backdrop. Rice & Gravy spiced just right. The Pound Cake was buttery and sweet. The meal was a little pricey but for this quality, well worth it. I will try their Oxtails on my next visit, if something else doesn't catch my eye.

My foodie friend told me about this restaurant (hey Dee) , I'm happy I tried it today 4/11/26. It's in Downtown Long Beach and lots of parking! The restaurant is nicely decorated. They have a DJ, that's a nice touch. The music was just a little loud to have lunch or dinner conversations or to order your food. But, it definitely didn't take away from the ambiance. I arrived at about 2:15 and was the 2nd in line. The cashier was courteous pleasant and very helpful as I wasn't sure what i wanted to order. I eventually ordered 2 plates, the oxtails plate with yams and green beans and the fried chicken plate with collard greens and the Gouda macaroni and cheese. I paid and provided my phone number for a text receipt. The cashier showed me how to know when my order was ready. There were 25 orders in front of me. My order was estimated to be ready in 40 minutes. I went to my car to wait and watch the countdown on my phone. I went back inside to wait when 5 orders were before mine. While waiting, a nice gentleman that was bringing out the orders asked me my name and said my order would be right up. All the food he was bringing to the front looked delicious! My order was now ready and as the timer hit zero at 3:30p, Jamie, the nice gentleman brought my food to the front! I was shown my food to confirm it was correct, the presentation was awesome!! My food was bagged by Jessica she was a sweetheart. I couldn't get everyone's name, but I promise the service was excellent especially considering how crowded it was. From what i could see the customers were pleasant and patient too. Let me add i usually drive to Los Angeles to get soul food at a well known soul food business. I won't have to drive as far now! My food was delicious..the greens were perfectly seasoned and I loved that turkey meat was used to season the greens. The Gouda Mac n cheese was perfectly cheesy! The oxtail plate I'm told was delicious too. However, he did say some of the oxtails were overcooked and hard. overall the oxtails were tender. I will add after my order came out, I heard that they were sold out of oxtails. So, it's getting to the end of the pot. I happily gave 5 stars because the food and service were worth it. I'm happy we have a place here in long Beach with good food!! For my next trip, I'm ordering online!! I will definitely be back.

It was crowded so there was a little wait to order, if you're in a hurry, this is definitely not the place to go to. I love the decor, the whole vibe of the place. The food was excellent. I must say the only thing that I didn't like was the yams. The crispy jumbo shrimp, the beans, the greens and cabbage, the mac & cheese, the oxtail the cornbread and rice gravy. The peach cobbler was delicious and the banana pudding too, very creamy firm bananas . Very good a 10 out of 10. if you're ever in Long Beach, I highly recommend stopping here if you're in the mood for some good soul food they have other items on the menu. I heard the chicken is fire. I also like the fact that they had a mini revolving book case, a coloring book for the children if you're there waiting and other interesting book. I thought that was a very unique touch.

Chicken was the only good thing !!!

I spent 55 dollars on 2 plates took an hour just to receive my food !!! One was the rib plate and the other was the southern fried chicken!!! First red flag was no Mac n cheese !!!! So I tried 4 different sides!! greens had no flavor, baked beans no flavor ,yams were the ones out the can , and the mash seemed like they were out the packet !!!! On top of all that they burnt my ribs !!!! Corn bread was dry and burnt as well!! This is not soul food and definitely was not made with love !!!

Went here today with my friend and got one of the chicken plates and the smothered ribs. With some cajun green beans. We got greens, baked beans, and mac n cheese for sides. Two drinks and everything came out to about $85. The portions are good for the price. Both plates were not finished and could take home left overs. The ribs were great definitely think the smoked ones are probably my preference. Our food took a while to come out and one of the employees came over and brought us out some deserts and drinks. The banana pudding is great and normally not my style. The peach cobbler was good just wish it had more peaches. The chicken was good according to my friend and all the sides were practically gone. So overall good place and attentive staff. Great music too.

We love the customer service here!!

The Cultured Soul Kitchen in Long Beach was a really good experience overall. The food was really good, but I do want to mention the wait was long, probably over an hour. It was definitely busy. While we were waiting, they did comp us with champagne, which I appreciated and helped ease the wait. My mom got the fish and shrimp with mac and cheese and yams, and my brother had the ribs with mac and cheese and yams. They both really enjoyed their meals. The fish and shrimp were fried hard, which is exactly how we like it, and everything was well seasoned. I had the oxtail over rice with collard greens and yams. The oxtail was very tender and the portion size was nice. I do think it could have used a little more seasoning, but it was still decent overall. One thing I really appreciated was the customer service. Even with the long wait and how busy it was, the service was A1, which is honestly rare sometimes. The staff stayed attentive and handled everything well. Also, just a heads up, if you are ordering oxtail, there may be an additional wait, but honestly everything was taking time because of how busy it was. Ambience-wise, it is pretty basic and more of a grab-and-go vibe than a sit-down dining experience. That said, I went on a Sunday and they had a live DJ playing great jams, which definitely added to the atmosphere and made the wait more enjoyable. Parking is a plus. There is plenty of it, which makes things easier. Overall, good food and great service. Just be prepared to wait. I would definitely come back. Flavor Profile (for reference): Umami-forward (savory, salty depth) Acidic or bright (tangy + sour) Pungent and intense (spicy and bitter notes) Drink Preference (for reference): Bitter-forward cocktails Balanced acidity Light sweetness only, not overly sugary

Culture soul kitchens food is delicious, this has become my favorite soul food restaurant. There is none like it. The oxtails were tender , Mac and cheese creamy and the yams were prefect. The vibe is chill, music is great and the people are sweet and kind, not only do feel like family but you can taste the love. In two weeks I've been there at least four times without a complaint.

We've been on a mission to find some GOOD soul food and stumbled across this spot on Instagram and we had to try it. We got there right before opening, so luckily there wasn't a long line yet, but locals told us it usually gets packed... and they were right because the line grew fast after we ordered. They were trying out a new ordering system using kiosks and QR codes to help with customer flow. There was a small issue with the QR ordering, but Jamie (I believe the owner) stepped in immediately and personally helped take our order. He was so kind and welcoming, and he went around helping other customers too. The staff there were just as sweet checking on everyone, answering questions, and making the whole experience feel warm and inviting. Now the FOOD... whew. EVERYTHING was amazing. The oxtail was insanely tender, soft, rich, and literally melt-in-your-mouth good. The collard greens had the perfect smoky flavor without being overly spicy. The mac and cheese? Creamy, cheesy, rich, with that perfect toasted top. The garlic mashed potatoes tasted like heaven. And the baked beans??? Absolute perfection. The texture, the flavor, the balance ...not too watery or overly sweet/saucy. And the candied yams!!! SO good. They weren't overly sweet at all; perfectly balanced with just enough brown sugar caramelization and cinnamon. You could actually taste the seasoning instead of just straight sugar. And the ribs... ridiculously tender. Fall-off-the-bone good. My taste buds were having a full celebration. The portions are huge too !! Definitely enough to share or save leftovers for a second round of heaven later. This spot absolutely deserves the hype. Can't wait to come back and try more from the menu.

It's right in Belmont and one neighborhood away from the water. Great date place and bar too. 2026 update: This breaks my heart. The menu has changed, the chef has definitely changed and service has unfortunately gone down. First off they cut a good portion of the menu and the physical design is not the easiest to read. (that's not really a problem tbh but it's something to note) What is the problem are the following: Ordering food for 3 took 20 minutes for servers to come, get food, and water + drinks we ordered. food took almost 45 minutes to arrive at the table. I get the kitchen makes a lot of stuff but this is crazy. at this point we were here for over an hour without eating. Not only were the orders wrong but also food portions were noticeably smaller. Credit due here, they fixed that (ofc which takes an extra time). Final straw here: To get someone's attention, get the bill, then for them to come get the bill, pay, and give us our cards back took: TWENTY MINUTES. Just to pay. tldr: food prices went up, staff not attentive, food still decent but different chef. Food is noticeably saltier. This place is still cute and servers as a great bar but oh my gosh has it gone down hill. Full context half the restaurant was empty. we are so disappointed. this place used to be great :(

DINNER FOR TWO SPECIAL…read more I don't know what's up with the mid reviews, this place is great for what it is!! Walking in is like being transported out of Long Beach and to the south.... Or a diner in big bear lake. It's charming. Anyways, I ordered the dinner for 2 for my mother and father. It came with a bit of bbq chicken, half rack of ribs, tri tip, catfish, cornbread, 2 sides, okra, sweet Potatoe fries and fried green tomatoes. I ordered myself a full rack baby back rib combo and it also came with two sides. French fries and mac. On top of that I ordered some hush puppies . I did not realize that I ordered that much food!!! It was sooo much. Cornbread - meh doesn't really have enough flavor but it's warm and you can add butter. The catfish- the breading was nice and crispy. French fries and mac and cheese- you can't ness that up. The tri tip- probably the best protein that we ate. Very soft. Ribs- needed more bbq sauce but you can order more. It was way better the next day when I heated them up. Chicken- I didn't eat it. My mom did. Hush puppies- fried cornbread. Not my thing. Sweet Potatoe fries- staple Fried green tomatoes- surprised me, that was actually good for literally a fried green tomato Okra- first bites, amazing, after a few it was too soggy for me. Just get the dinner for two. It's more than enough and you get to try a little bit of everything for 58 + dollars. Was it amazing? Not everything, but I appreciate the portion sizes and the variety.

I ordered delivery so expected the food to be more lukewarm than hot but was excited about the taste! It arrived and smelled wonderful and was surprisingly still steaming hot when I dig into the bag. I grabbed a straw, punctured the cup, and took a big gulp waiting for the sugar high I was craving! Sadly, it too was less than I desired. Then the Mac and cheese wasn't as flavorful either. I began wondering what type of pallet my co-worker had? This is BBQ for babies. I did finish the food but definitely had to do some "doctoring up" of my own. C'mon Johnny, reach for the stars! Kick up the flavor and add more suga' to that lemonade! Every time I see you when I drive by, I wanna get excited but it just isn't happening...yet. I'll give it another try someday.

I started with a cup of their beef and barley soup. My wife and I both make this at home from scratch and we're both impressed by theirs. My wife took a taste of mine and instantly ordered her own. Very rich and flavorful. I kept looking at photos of their take on chicken and waffles and knew I had to try it. Seriously epic and was good as it looked. They coated the chicken in a chili rub that gave it a sweet and spicy flavor when paired with their maple syrup. Served on top of a waffle and topped with an egg. I loved it and would probably order again on my next visit. My wife had the American plate which was your classic eggs, bacon, potatoes, and sourdough toast combo. High quality ingredients elevated it beyond your typical diner food. Drinks were great too. I had their house made bloody mary which had a nice kick to it. My wife had their brunch version of a Corpse Reviver cocktail. After our meals were done we finished with an Irish coffee since everyone was ordering them. Perfect service, relaxing atmosphere, and delicious food will definitely have me returning very soon! Parking is free for 2 hours at the nearby garage on 3rd and is a very short walk. The closer garage on Broadway is not free. You can make restaurant reservations on their website but it wasn't needed when we went.

TLDR; It's expensive, and not worth the routine visit, but worth the one-time stop in to experience the festivities. The Miracle pop-up at The Ordinarie is somehow even more decorated and extravagant than you'd expect from a seasonal pop-up. The line looks long outside, as there are no reservations, but it moves quickly since they hold everybody to a pretty strict 2-hour time limit. The drinks are good, the cups are cute, and everyone is festive. It's an all-around fun experience.  I think because of this, you do pay a premium price tag for food and drinks that are just good or okay. I think it's something that is worth the visit if you've never been and you enjoy getting into the Christmas spirit. I think that outside of the pop-up, The Ordinarie is a fun spot to check out in Long Beach. It't not a pillar of the food scene if you're a tourist, but it is a good, late night spot if you work in the industry nearby. They have a great late-night menu with a killer smash burger.

Our group of four had a chance to stop by for an early dine-in dinner, and found the chicken to well prepared and tasty. Originally founded in 1976 in Los Angeles by a enterprising franchisee who wanted to create his own fast food brand, Louisiana Famous Fried Chicken soon became very popular with LA residents. As sometimes happens with immigrant communities by word of mouth and 'paying it forward', the burgeoning Cambodians began to be the majority owners of franchisees, until it resulted in the brand being sold to a Cambodian in 2009. Considering the largest concentration of Cambodians outside of Cambodia is in Long Beach, California, I wanted to try this particular location. They also sell donuts here, and my credit card bill actually listed the donut shop as the vendor...this for me is not a selling point, but was not noticeable during our visit. It's a walk-up set-up, where you order/pay for your food through security windows. We ordered a 12-piece family combo for $35.45, which included 3 pieces of breast/thigh/wing/leg, 2 small orders of fries, a coleslaw and 6 rolls. They also sell fried catfish and shrimp, so got a 4 pc shrimp ($3.85). They only sell drinks by cans or bottles, so got 4 cans of Coke/Pepsi/Squirt. It is clearly stated that each order is fried fresh, taking about 20 minutes. Our order was ready in 15 minutes, and we decided to dine-in (a small makeshift outdoor dining area with temporary tables was set-up). The chicken was well brined and had been fried well (leaving plenty of space between the chicken), with the outer coat being crunchy with a little bit of spice. For me it tasted very similar to the popular national chain, but with more consistency. The 'small' fries were not that at all, but very large...with one being enough to feed the four of us. The fries looked underdone, but were not. There were no condiments available, so the saving grace was the thin hot sauce that you could dip your fries and chicken into. The rolls were forgettable, and the coleslaw was grocery store quality (which I actually like). In fact, the chicken and sides reminded me of what you could get at a grocery store deli, except always getting the chicken fresh, instead of ones that have been fried too many to a basket and sitting too long under a heat lamp. Freshness definitely matters here. There was plenty of food for the 4 of us, with us taking half of the meal home. It reheated very well, providing us a good lunch the following day.

The soft shell crab was crispy, flavorful, and packed into fresh bread that held everything together without getting soggy. Messy in the best way and exactly what you hope for when you order one. The owner was super friendly and very hospitable. Definitely living up to the southern hospitality. Food came out hot and fresh. Definitely a spot I'd come back to when I'm craving New Orleans style comfort food.

There was a deal on door dash so I thought I should take advantage of it and I decided to order from this place. Had never heard of it before but I was in the mood for soul food. I looked at the menu and didn't really know what to try, so I just went with old reliable; Fried chicken plate with Mac and Yams. I tried to order another side but each side was $10. So I was like "I'm not paying $10 for one side!" But MAN I should have! My food was INCREDIBLE. I took one bite of the Mac and cheese and it was so good, I set my timer for 4:30am just so I can wake up early and workout. Anything that good, has to immediately be shortening your lifespan. My goodness it was great. The yams were super flavorful and the chicken was juicy and crunchy. And they left me a lil piece of cornbread and even that was delicious. Just all around great experience. I was a little skeptical at first, but I'm glad we decided to give it a try. The ordering process was simple. You place your order and pay at the front counter, find a seat, and they bring your food to you using a number system to locate your table. I ordered the catfish and asked for it extra crispy. It was delicious! The outside had a great crunch, soft inside. I got mac and cheese and greens. The mac and cheese was cool. It wasn't the kind that tastes like somebody's grandma made it, but it was definitely better than what you get at most restaurants. The greens had a slight vinegar taste but they paired well with the rest of the food. One of my friends ordered the jumbo fried shrimp and really enjoyed them. She also got a Dirty Kool-Aid, she said that it wasn't very strong. Her girlfriend enjoyed her meal as well. What stood out to me was that I finished everything on my plate.
