My friend and I were looking for some good Southern comfort food and decided to give RJ's Southern Home Cooking a try. Overall, it was a solid experience with a few standout items that will have me thinking about them long after the meal. First, let's talk about the service because it was AMAZING. Our server was kind, patient, attentive, and took the time to give us recommendations from the menu. Great customer service always makes a difference, and they definitely set the tone for a pleasant dining experience. For my meal, I ordered the catfish with mac and cheese, cabbage, and hush puppies. My friend went with the fried chicken, greens, red beans and rice, and cornbread. Now for the food review... The undisputed star of the show was the cabbage. Baby, that cabbage was GOOD! Perfectly seasoned, flavorful, and cooked just right. If you're ordering sides, don't skip it. The catfish was pretty good too. One thing I appreciated was that I didn't have to ask them to "fry it hard"--it came out with a nice texture and flavor right from the kitchen. My friend's fried chicken was tasty, and I especially appreciated the flaky, crispy crust. It had a satisfying crunch without being overly greasy. The mac and cheese, unfortunately, was a little mediocre for me. Not bad, but not particularly memorable. The greens were also just okay, and I could have done without the red beans and rice. One thing that definitely deserves a shoutout: they have bottomless mimosas! That alone makes this a great brunch or weekend spot. As for parking, there is a parking lot, which is always a plus. Just keep in mind that spaces are limited, and the restaurant is a little tucked away "in the cut," so keep your eyes peeled when you're looking for it. Overall, the excellent service, flavorful catfish, crispy chicken, bottomless mimosas, and that unforgettable cabbage made for a worthwhile visit. I'd definitely come back--and yes, I'd order that cabbage again without hesitation!

Back to try some more southern food. So let's see if they're pretty good eh or ew. This time I got their meatloaf, short ribs, and peach cobbler to try. Course gotta get some of my faves too tho like their fluffy crumbly not too sweet cornbread, crispity crunchy hushpuppies, savory crunchy cabbage, cheesy mellow Mac, and sweet soft sugary yams. Tried their waffle fries for the first time and they were well seasoned, crisp, and not bland or dry. The meatloaf was super soft yet firm, savory, umami, bell peppery and smothered in rich gravy. The short ribs were a bit tough but were super meaty and paired well with the homemade perfectly balanced barbecue sauce. The peach cobbler had jarred peaches, mushy pastry, with strong cinnamon and nutmeg flaves. Not really for me. The owners are super nice and even gave me some of their special made beef and salmon jerky to try. They were both super tender, well seasoned, and not chewy or tough. The salmon one was a bit too fishy for me tho. Everyone here is always so nice and food is always quality and fresh. This place is still pretty good. Short ribs $31.99 Meatloaf $18.99 Peach cobbler $4.99

My foodie finds are simply living life and trusting the process as it unfolds and you will discover gems as you go and this is truly a local neighborhood spot to feed the soul with a southern feel. Once i walked in, this place is relax vibe with 80 music in the background. The hostess was Victoria and she was warm and welcoming and she answered all questions about the menu. I ordered turkey wings, gravy and potatoes salad. Yummy I would absolutely be back for another round.

Went to this place after my momma read about it. It did not disappoint!! It is literally a hole in the wall in Downey that feels like you stepped into New Orleanes with the abundance of decorations, although there are very cool wooden maps of Texas and Georgia. There was a musician there jamming out great jazz that really added to the feel. We had southern fried chicken, lemon pepper wings, and brisket. The fried chicken and wings were so f****ing good. The juice that came out of the fresh out the pan chicken was worth the burn. We had Mac n cheese, green beans, waffle fries, and sweet potatoes for the sides. One of the best green beans and potatoes I've ever had!! Honestly. Tender, flavor bomb, and perfectly cooked. The brisket was good too. Only reason they got 4 stars was that we found a hair on the outside of the drink cup and the brisket plate. Yuck. Luckily it wasn't in the food or drink. The biscuit was good, but the corn bread was a lil dry. Lemonade was perfect balance of sweet and tart. Of course we ended with a cheesecake, peach cobbler, and lemonade cake. Yuuuumm. Service was good. Two people covered the entire place and they were on it.

What the H*ll is this... This is not a chocolate cake. It looks dry and frosting melted from sitting out...

The food was so dry, it should've came with complimentary chapstick... You can tell it was from the day before or longer... and it it wasn't. They need to go to the south for retraining from the ancestors. Seriously disgusting...!!! Even the chocolate cake looked like caramel cake... Highly disappointed....!

Checked in with the fam! Came for take out but ended up staying due to the hospitality. I'll be bacc to finish this up with the food review. Ok so everything was a 10/10. I ordered the Gumbo, and smothered turkey chops with rice and gravy cabbage and red beans and rice. Cornbread and a sunset large kool aid.. Everything was literally fire asf! Thanks to Rebecca for the beautiful customer service. The inside is very comforting and the vibes from the music was electrifying. Such great experience! Most definitely will be back again...

The best food in town . I travel from Anaheim Ca to get home cooked food at the best prices and always served fresh . This is my second time visiting this week . Yesterday i ordered two soul food dinners from RJs. One dinner where pork chops, yams and macaroni and cheese. The other dinner was fried chicken, yams and macaroni and cheese. I called and ordered it about 145 pm they told me it would be ready in about twenty minutes. I arrive there an hour later at 245 p m. When I walked up to the counter One of the servers which was dressed in all black asked me if I was there for a pickup order. I replied yes, she asked me my name( Rob) as she looked at hey bag sitting on the counter and inform me to wait a minute and have a seat. I sat there for 15 minutes when the lady with the jamaican accent which I believe was the same woman that took my order over the phone.Ask me, are you waiting for a pick up?. I replied, yes, she asked me my name, and I told her it was rob, she looked at the same bag that the previous warmen looked at as she replied it's right here". I replied to her" why would she tell me to sit down? And wait if this was my order"? Which she had no answer. And I didn't expect for her to. When I got the food home, the yams look like they come straight out of a can. The chicken tastes like it was unseasoned In the pork chops tasted as if they had been fried. The day before. I was really disappointed because I have been a customer of this place for years. But that was my last time going to this place.

    A lot of good choices

I was craving jambalaya and heard this place has great food. Service was prompt and welcoming. The ambiance tonight happens to be keyboard and saxophone! Just came on a whim and glad we did!

I came here for the first time recently. I am glad I came and saw this unique and wonderful place to be. The staff is very friendly. The atmosphere is very comfortable. They have a huge selection of drinks in a wide variety of colors and flavors that they mix. The fried chicken here was very moist and tender on the inside. I like that, I love when even the white meat is moist. The sides were good, but what stood out the most was the chicken and the drinks, I had the Purple Rain. I parked in between the restaurant and the car wash. They play cool, classic, R&B music that is chill to listen to while dining well. I plan to come back again and give a review update after trying a few other items.

    NOT CANDIED yams and shrimp
    Lonnie D.

The food was dry and under seasoned. Service was spotty despite there being literally only two other customers. Nothing tasted fresh. Like it was warmed. Hotline sandwich was undercooked and shrimp too hard and rubbery. Red Beans and rice was dry and not seasoned at all. I will say the greens were delicious. And my girl enjoyed the Oxtail dinner For $75 I won't return. But I will give it another go if they offer a fresh seasoned meal

After waiting so long to satisfy that craving, the whole experience was a letdown. What disappointed me even more was the customer service. The employees had absolutely no personality--very dry and almost robotic. Whatever happened to good old-fashioned customer service? SMH. ‍ Unfortunately, this will be my last visit to this location. The place comfy, the ambience is dark and bar-like, the drink vibes look chill, I have no complaints about the service. The service was good and the staff was nice. All this makes the steak disappointment that much worse for me. We ordered Ribeye and Shrimp Salmon Lobster Mac and Cheese Asparagus Lobster Roll (Sushi) A drink from the bar The Steak.. The steak came served on a cast-iron skillet. I ordered it medium-well. It arrived a little more medium than usual, but that was not an issue. What disappointed me was the puddle the steak was sitting in. Traditionally said puddle is a mixture of butter, thyme, and whatever seasonings you used on the steak when cooking it. In this case, that puddle was flavorless. It really tasted like the steak was just sitting in a flavorless oil. The steak was very bland, very difficult to think someone could send out a piece of meat out like that, especially when you find out what it costs. It was not worth it and not worth the final tab unfortunately. Really wanted to find a steak W for Downey but I don't see myself being interested in this place again.

If you'd guessed Chipotle or Habit, you'd be "warm" but still miss your mark- It was Sizzler who innovated the fast-casual dining concept...where patrons would queue up, place their orders from colorful, oversized pictorial menu boards, then wait for their pre-paid order to be delivered, tableside. At its commercial peak in the early 1980s, Sizzler stood astride a $1 billion enterprise that canvassed 740 locations across 40 of the 50 United States. My much beloved Aunt, Auntie Jo, who helped raise me (your favorite Yelp correspondent) was an early and rabid lover of the restaurant she affectionately dubbed "Sizzler's." During her golden years in small town Klamath Falls, OR, a trip to Sizzler was a guaranteed and surefire way to clinch her day. Sheeeeeeit, her week! So when I heard that the Sizzler in Downey had recently reopened following an extensive renovation, it became the must-be venue for today's lunch w/ my lifelong best friend, Mick. My pal went for the AYCE salad bar and a huge strawberry lemonade. I wasn't feeling too hip (physically) so I paired the salad bar w/ a takeout Prime Rib Cheeseburger and Fries so I could eat later... While I, reeling from neck spasms, picked at a bowl of (excellent) potato cheddar broccoli soup and a bowl of fresh cut pineapple & honeydew melon, Mick incinerated a quartet of plates plus two bowls worth of buffet fare. Remember Louie Anderson, the cherub-faced, um, rotund comic who usta riff on how he'd personally shut down a trio of AYCE Chinese buffets? Well, what my buddy Mick lacks in Louie's girth, he more than matches the late, great funny man in appetite! I'd accord the spread at Sizzler 3 or 4 stars. While I may not have been overjoyed w/ today's selections, my hesitation to dive in had everything to do w/ my discomfort and nothing to do w/ the offerings. Judging from the expressions on my pal's face plus all of the other midday diners...the buffet must've been serviceable (at minimum). My takeout meal was very good. Thick pound burger composed of ground prime rib topped with velvety American cheese, tomato, onion, lettuce on a buttery Brioche and fries. Just what the doctor ordered after a long day... At this, my first visit to a Sizzler since taking my beloved Aunt there a couple months before we lost her, in the Fall of 2019, it's nice to see this old American dining hallmark reemerge from the shadows.
