La Viagra Jarocha - Oysters a la diablo

The colourful table cloths and breeze off the bay make for a very nice setting. The wait staff is very gracious and tries as hard to speak English as we do to speak Spanish. We feel welcome. We enjoyed a frozen margarita, a mojito, and a refreshing chelada; all were delish! We shared a plate of oysters a la diablo, which were not my favourite. Other styles of the oysters are more complementary while the diablo overpowered the delicate shellfish. The filet fish was tender and delectable with a small mound of fried dried shredded Chile pepper that had a sweet aftertaste. It was served with rice, macaroni salad, and a luscious mixed salad. The seafood torta stole the day; we all took a taste and decided we'd get that next time. It came with a mixed salad and something else, maybe... we were in love with this egg pancake thick with shrimp, fish, and other seafood delectibles. Last time I was crazy about the sea-and-land kebabs and almost got them again, but decided on the alhambres instead, also the sea-and-land style. Oh My Goodness! Quickly sautéed with diced onions and sweet peppers, it was the bomb! I ate it with tortilla chips and needed nothing else. And there were leftovers that lasted less than a few minutes once I got home and my husband smelled them. This place is always high on my list when visiting Chetumal and a place I love to take friends.

During our 3 hour fishing trip we caught 1 Mahi Mahi, 1 barracuda and about 8 small fish that were too small to keep. Our Captains Nacho and Miguel were very nice, however the issue with the trip was based on my communication during the booking of our trip that I was only interested in reef fishing. We have 3 kids that have gone both deep sea fishing and reef fishing and strongly prefer the experience of catching small fish frequently vs the chance of catching larger fish in deeper waters. During my inquiry emails prior to booking, I made it very clear that we were only interested in a reef fishing experience. We arrived right on time and were on the water within minutes. They immediately put out the trolling lines which if we were doing in route to the reef, I had no issue with. About 45 minutes into our trip, we were still on the way to the reef and all three kids were on their phones. I again reiterated our desire fish on the reef, but right about then we hooked our MahiMahi. Maybe 15 minutes later, we caught a barracuda, which my son that got to reel that in, greatly enjoyed. Unfortunately, that was the last big fish we caught. 2 hours into our 3 hour trip, we finally arrived at the reef where two of my kids had not yet gotten to touch a fishing rod. At that point, half of our group was sea sick and was ready to be done. We stayed for about 30 minutes and caught 8 fish at the reef. I feel like had we started with the reef as I had asked, the experience would have been a much more positive one. Instead, two of our kids that were sick and didn't catch any fish immediately declared they never wanted to do a fishing trip again. I don't know if it was a language barrier problem or whoever I was emailing back and forth with to make the reservation didn't share our Reef fishing interest with Nacho and Miguel but our trip was very disappointing as a result. I don't take low reviews lightly as these are exactly the types of reviews that I look for when I'm deciding what company to book with, but our trip today was a major disappointment that in my opinion could have been avoided very easily.

The food menu is extensive and features all the staples from the region and more! I ordered a Shrimp Ceviche to start, which was a really generous portion and it was enough for the whole table to share. For my main dish I had a Fried fish with Garlic and, after trying the garnish on the fish, a side of fried plantains. It was heavenly. The fish meat came out of the bones and it was really flavorful. the beers are cold and the service is fast!, cannot miss it! Covid notes: Ther are plenty of tables on the back patio and none of the spaces are closed door, also, everyone wears a facemask and hand sanitizer is provided on arrival.

We started with what I am assuming is fish broth and it was so good I ordered a second bowl, both of which was gratis. They also provide fresh chips for the table. Since it was six of us, we all ordered items to share. I got one of my absolute favorite dishes - pescado frito. It was absolutely perfect. Crispy and flaky with the fish being super tender. It was served with rice, a slice of maduro and a small bowl of frijoles negro. If I could've kissed the chef, I would have. They also have a variety of habanero sauces - my favorite was the Jamaican one (of course!). Also ordered was the grilled sea bass, bacon wrapped shrimps and the seafood skewers. The only meal that wasnt excellent was the carne de res. It was a little dry. It was a relaxing atmosphere and the service was on point. Definitely a great little spot. I wish we has more like these stateside.

The best meal we had in Bacalar! Although I'm not a fan of dimly lit restaurants, the ambience,…read moredecor and overall style of this place was very authentic and aesthetic. Upon entry, the open air cooking is fully exposed so you can see them making fresh tortillas on this open fire pit, grilling meats, food prep, everything. We received it and a large round table in the middle of the restaurant right next to the little boutique shop. The menu was filled with so many different dishes, we went overboard. You start with these freshly made tostadas and several homemade salsa for dipping. The tostadas were a bit on the hard side, but I think it's because they are made fresh. They also give everybody a small cup of what tastes like kombucha to eat in digestion. For starters, we had the mixed ceviche, guacamole, tuna tar tare, Koji sliders, watermelon salad. I felt like after that everybody was stuffed, but since the main entrees said it would take anywhere from 40 to 60 minutes to prepare, we had already ordered our main entrees dishes so we knew we were in it for the long haul. The sliders were sizable and had a nice sweet flavor, loved the tuna tar tare, fresh, perfectly seasoned, the guac was chunky and tasted very fresh. It was served on top of these crispy little possibly plantain chips. well the watermelon salad was good. We just weren't bands of warm fruit in a salad so that might've been the only miss of the night. For entrées, we ordered the tuna steak, one ribeye, one fillet mignon, the Thai salad, and I believe the sea bass. To Be honest, I was already 4 margaritas deep so I can't remember much but I do remember that the food being gooood! Everybody was very happy with their meal. My son said it was the best steak that he'd ever had. Drinks are definitely strong.... And we also enjoyed all of the desserts which the tiramisu was my favorite. We had an amazing service from Erik and Marisol. Great restaurant and food, impeccable service. I would highly recommend for a special occasion as you could easily dress up and make it a very memorable dinner. My only warning would be that because of the open kitchen style of the restaurant. It does get a little smoky in there while you're eating, but that's the small price to pay for a great meal.!

My boyfriend and I arrived for dinner without reservations but got there right when they opened and were seated immediately. Our waiter was fantastic. He explained how the restaurant works, offered us a tour, and walked us through the menu with thoughtful, spot-on recommendations. We were brought complimentary chips and salsa, and since we were told our entrées would take 45 minutes to an hour in the wood-fired oven, we started with the ceviche de maracuyá. So worth it. For our mains, my boyfriend ordered the steak and I got the lobster. Both were excellent, but the lobster... wow. I'm from the Bahamas and grew up eating great lobster, and I can honestly say this was the best lobster of my life. Something about the seasoning and the wood-fire cooking made it unbelievably rich and decadent. I haven't stopped thinking about it since. By the time we were finishing our meal, the restaurant had filled up, but it never felt too loud or chaotic. The space felt intimate, with dim lighting, planets scattered throughout the decor, and perfectly spaced tables that made the whole experience feel special. Out of all the places we ate in Bacalar, this was hands down the best, and the one we still talk about.
