Today we stumbled on Almost Home. What a wonderful gem in Greencastle. I had the smokehouse bourbon burger and my wife had the chicken salad sandwich. Both were amazing!! And the French fries were out of this world good. For dessert we shared an amazing chocolate cake (sorry did not catch the name of it) but OMG!!!! It was so amazing. As for the service, the building, the ambience.... All were incredible. We would highly recommend stopping in at Almost Home if you are ever in Greencastle. read more

Almost home has always been a staple in Greencastle as long as I can remember! The sandwiches are delicious & the broccoli soup is wonderful, that soup was always a favorite of my late mom & she would ask for it often if I was in town. The service is always good & the desserts are so very delicious! It's a nice local restaurant that is loved by many. I suggest the desert called strawberry pizza, but all the desserts are homemade & fantastic. read more

This is a cute spot on the courthouse square in downtown Greencastle. I loved the atmosphere, cozy feeling and the decor - it's in an older building but has a lot of charm. Food was ok. I enjoyed my meal and would give it more of a 3.75 rating but not quite 4 stars mostly because while my bbq was enjoyable it wasn't anything out of the ordinary. Solid eating place in Greencastle. The food quality was great. The service was a bit slow/understaffed, so can't hold that against them. The Cheese curds as an appetizer were great. Got the "mile high" meatloaf. Mile high in the name was a bit misleading. It was a bit small/ thin for the $15 price tag, even for where I'm based, though it sure was tasty! My wife got the pulled pork sandwich, decent tasting pulled pork, a bit more generous on the side portion, and amount of meat for $13. Though the food was great, I found myself scavenging off others plates as the amount of meat for the mile high meatloaf was a bit disappointing - not ideal after a 4 hour car ride. Great decor and ambiance inside. Probably would opt out of going there next time in town, unless if I saw the portions were a bit more generous. read more

My husband and I recently had lunch at Almost Home. We started with a fabulous appetizer of crispy Brussels sprouts. We are hooked! I had the half ham sandwich, along with a side salad and a cup of very tasty (soup of the day)curry chicken soup. My husband had a tenderloin sandwich, fresh cut French fries, dusted with rosemary and a cup of cream of broccoli soup. We ordered a strawberry pizza dessert to go. Our server P. We decided to stop At a local restaurant on our way thru Greencastle. We walked in and this area was coffee and chocolates. The person working this area sat us on the restaurant area. I loved the look of the old red brick. They also had a huge metal clock on the wall. The waitress waited on us pretty quick and the food came out quick. My husband ordered the mushroom soup and didn't care for it he stated it tasted like onion soup. My huge tenderloin was very good. 2 people could have shared this. The food is exceptionally good here. This is not your typical little café or restaurant. The food is high-quality. The chef definitely knows what he/she is doing. I ordered the beet salad with a side of salmon. The salmon was cooked to perfection. There were two kinds of beets, chopped up nicely, and the ingredients were all very fresh. Don't skip the desserts. All these desserts are homemade and they are sure to be a party to your pallet. I got the coconut cake. The coconut flavor was not overpowering in the cake or the icing. The cake was very moist and I thoroughly enjoyed it. My friend got the peanut butter pie. You talk about sugar overload! It was super sweet and she could only finish a half of it. She ask for a container and took the other half with her. We walked around, enjoyed the many decorated trees. Lunch at almost home is calm and relaxing. We enjoyed the ambience and service. I had the chicken salad sandwich with house made chips. My daughter had the caprese salad. Our meals were very good. But we were excited about the deserts. There is a display case out front when you walk in BUT these may only be available as a whole pie or cake. It is a different menu when ordering by the slice. We originally wanted to go to Bridges, but didn't have a reservation on a Friday night - so we walking around the block to Almost Home instead. We walked in and were a little worried to see no one seated when we'd just left somewhere with a 2 hr wait. Our service was very fast and our server was polite. The restaurant itself seemed outdated and lacking in character, we didn't feel as cozy as the name would suggest. Our food was pretty good. I had a salad with chicken and walnuts but didn't particularly like the dressing, not what you'd expect. My husband had a hamburger. The cocktails were great! We really enjoyed them. Unfortunately I've seen a decline in both food and service at Almost Home. For starters there was no hostess to meet and seat my small party of two. After standing around for five or so minutes I was able to snag a server (from the almost empty dining room) and ask for a hostess. I was given a curt "Yes but we're busy." Once seated our waitress was polite and attentive but the food only so-so. My pulled pork sandwich was lukewarm, the brioche bun looked more like a grocery store hamburger bun, and the serving of fries smaller than it has been in the past. This is a trend I've observed since the pandemic, less food but higher prices. Again, the dining room was not busy but when exiting the restaurant there was a line of patrons waiting for the non-existant hostess. Almost Home can and should do better. read more

My wife and I enjoy trivia, so when we saw that the swizzle stick was having trivia we thought we would check it out. since we were there, we thought we might as well have dinner too. The waitress suggested the special which was a bone in pork chop wit asparagus and potato. What we got was a pork chop that was more bone than chop, 4 spears of asparagus and a twice baked potato (very small) that was too salty to eat. This is the best restaurant in Greencastle! Went last week for my birthday and had the fish tacos, they were SO good! My friend had the broccoli chicken casserole and she raved about it. Then today I went back with my husband and mother in law, after a funeral. Again the food was perfect! My husband & MIL had the crab cakes with a salad ( husband) and broccoli cheese soup (MIL) they went on & on how good it was all the way home. We haven't eaten inside since March 2020 and I'm glad we did at Almost Home driving through town. They were quiet and we were the only ones in there until a couple other croups came in. We felt very safe, they had sanitizer on the table, clean bathrooms, masks, social distance, etc. The food was delish! Rosemary fries are a MUST! Our server let us know that they just brewed a pomegranate iced tea and that was super perfect. We had the Cod sandwich and Chicken sandwich, Both A+!! The betta feta spread needs to be packaged and sold, it really took the chicken sandwich to another level! What a nice surprise I found on Yelp in downtown Greencastle. After finding some free street parking, I entered this tastefully done restaurant. There was an order counter with an assortment of desserts for folks to choose from and pickup their takeout items. For customers who wish to dine in there was a large dining room in the connected space. Tables were set mostly as four top seating with small floral arrangements on each. Since it was early afternoon, there was only one person working the front of the house, including the take out counter. Still, she checked in with a decent frequency and waits were minimal. I started with a cup of Broccoli Cheese Soup. This was generously portioned and came with a packaged cracker. The soup was thick and creamy with a tasty cheese flavor. The broccoli was cooked thoroughly and in small pieces so they easily fit on the soup spoon. I also ordered the Sante Fe Chicken Salad. Served on a bed of iceberg lettuce and surrounded by multi colored tortilla chips, the salad was huge with sliced chicken (cajun spices on top) on the side. The salad had sliced heirloom tomatoes, black bean salsa, shredded colby jack, and a small cup of Chipotle Ranch dressing. The taste was fresh and well balanced with the numerous ingredients. Note: The table knife was really dull and cutting the chicken strips down to bite sized pieces was difficult, so I recommend asking for a steak knife to make it easier. The salad also came with a mini Blueberry Muffin that was really good. I enjoyed my meal and was too full to try any of the wide array of desserts. Eating here was a pleasant surprise. We didn't know what to expect and almost didn't stop. Located on the square across from courthouse. The inside is quite spacious and modern. Waitress friendly and polite. Menu was somewhat limited. I got the chicken salad. Best I've ever had. The fruit was so fresh. Husband got the grilled pork sandwich. It was a generous ground pork sandwich. Also very good. The rosemary fries were delicious and crispy. Even at the end of the meal, they were still crispy. We usually don't get dessert but the waitress brought a tray of desserts by. We split the strawberry pizza. One piece too much for one person. Delicious through and through. Hubby and I were in the area, and our first choice was closed, so we chose this place as it was the only one in the area we could find open. We were greeted and seated quickly. I ordered the French onion soup as well as the special: a chicken enchilada. I opted to live the guacamole and all the extra junk off of it as I'm not much of a fan of stuff from the garden. The French onion soup was interesting. It wasn't traditional by any sense. It had an okay flavor, but I was expecting a cheesy, broiled, amazing soup. I didn't get that here. It was soup with a glob of melted cheese just floating on it with a few croutons. The enchilada, well, it was a burrito. Don't call something what it isn't. It was bland and boring. I've spent 2+ weeks in Greencastle over the last few months and Almost Home is, hands down, the best restaurant in town. The fried green brans are delicious and addictive; perfectly fried. The Pistachio Coconut pie was new on the dessert menu on my last visit and oh my, it was insanely delicious. The steak salad at lunch was perfect; the meatloaf was better than my mom's and the perfect comfort food meal on a cold night. Service is perfect; noise level is not at loud; I love being able to actually hear my dinner companions. If I lived in Greencastle, this would be my go-to restaurant. Really nice location located at the downtown square. Saw the pics on yelp of the large coffee expresso station & bar inside and wanted to grab a latte to go for the ride home. Had 3 people walk up to us at the coffee station including the baker who was bringing out several large gorgeous cakes. Everyone asked to help or seat us and we said each time we were hoping to order coffee to go. About 10 minutes later one of them returns from the back kitchen with 2 small to go cups of regular coffee? We were standing at the large coffee expresso bar with expresso & coffee machines syrups etc. The lights were on the machines, they were plugged in. Our helper apologized and went back to the kitchen again. We waited another minute and then left. This was my favorite restaurant for decades. Many celebrations were enjoyed at Almost Home. After today, I will never return. My scoop of chicken salad was served on ONE leaf of lettuce. I asked for a bowl of lettuce and the waitress brought me ONE more leaf. The fruit salad had turned and not eatable. The muffin was old and gummy. I just paid $13 for Almost nothing. My mom and I decided to stop by after hearing rave reviews from friends about the strawberry pizza cake here. We shared the chicken salad croissant which was very good! I loved the added touch of slivered almonds! They came by with a tray of what the desserts looked like which thankfully or else we wouldn't have known about the snickerdoodle cake. We ordered a slice of the strawberry pizza cake and the snickerdoodle. The strawberry pizza cake is like a cookie crust with a cream cheese like icing with strawberries piled on top. I have always enjoyed each and every entree I have ordered. Their beer selection is good, and their teas are simply amazing! I love their Atlantic Salmon, it is decadent. Their Barbecue Baby Back Ribs are divine, and go well with an Anchor Steam Porter! The staff here is nice, friendly, and very professional. The desserts go above and beyond any place I have been to in Indiana. Complete and utter dessert decadence. You cannot go wrong with dessert here. You will just be mad you cannot try it all. All the more reason to come back! They no longer take the restaurant.com gift cards, even if you have already purchased them. I find that to be bad for business, and that is what keeps them from getting 5 stars. All things considered, they are an amazing dining establishment with many fine points. Could not find anything we did not enjoy here. Went with a group of 10, and we tried lots of their menu items. Service was excellent. The exposed brick walls really add to the dining atmosphere.No complaints on any of our choices. I had the daily special prime rib Manhattan. This was really much better than ones I have had in the past. Clean restrooms. Street parking that can be busy. Also, the firecracker shrimp was great. Hot and spicy but not overwhelming. Management checked on us several times. This is good food around the town square. And dessert was out of this world. Pie and a strawberry pizza. Not really like pizza and outstanding. We were passing through on our way from Shades State Park to Spencer; we remembered hearing about this place at the Fantastic Food Fest in Indianapolis, so we decided to give it a try. The food is awesome! I had the Henrietta grilled chicken panini with bacon jam and smoked gouda cheese, and it was absolutely delicious. The fried catfish sandwich was tasty too. The past few times I've visited have been very busy and the service has been extremely slow (even with reservations). However, the food is delicious. Moderately busy at 11:30am on Sunday. Mostly middle aged to older couples and groups. Fried catfish sandwich and southwestern chicken sandwich both good. Green beans with wasabi dipping sauce was very good. There is a bakery attached and desserts looked great although we skipped to get back on the road. Would certainly return if in area. read more

Lovely restaurant in downtown Greencastle - it's nice to have a local place on the square. My son loved the big burger. We all loved the soft and warm dinner rolls and pecan butter. I tried the crab cakes - good for Indiana. :) The ambiance is wonderful. I love having a glass of Indiana's Oliver Winery Soft Red with dinner. Service is always pleasant. My husband and I were in town for a concert and thought we would try "Almost Home". We asked what they would recommend and we were told the 'prime rib sandwich', that sounded good. So we sat down. Only to be told they were out of it. ( Well, why recommend it then?) Ok, we'll look at the desserts we said. The waitress took forever to bring the dessert tray so we wanted to check a email and and asked for the WIFI password. We were told "we will not give you the password." Still no dessert tray. The actual hostility of the staff made us leave. No prime rib, no password, the dessert tray never showed up. So, if "Almost Home" means hostile, rude and uncaring, this place delivers. Never ever going back and had a lovely dinner with a very caring staff and half the price of the nonexistent prime rib sandwich at the restaurant next door. read more
