Owners Eva and Jim are awesome and have operated the bed and breakfast for many years now and it was such a pleasure to meet them during my stay as well as meet their family and super cute energetic smaller terrier dogs. I was in the Papaya Suite and definitely plenty of space, with a separate bedroom, kitchen bathroom, and the living room! And did I mention, the great breakfast food and other snacks in the provided basket as well as fresh fruit, cereal, milk and other items inside the refrigerator and freezer? Definitely saved me time and money from having to drive to the nearest bakery or market! Yes, this is a real Bed & Breakfast and definitely worth every dollar! There are three other suites available for booking and there is usually no minimum stay required except during certain times of the year like the holiday season or special local events, for instance. Also, guests are offered a 10% discount if they pay in check/cash versus charging to their credit/debit card, and I opted to provide Eva with the check. You will also find two common areas, and one of them is right outside the Papaya Room on the ground level where there are other tables, chairs, and a BBQ. The other common area is upstairs on the lanai, where there are more tables and chairs, and ultimately a lovely view of Kihei and the West Maui Mountains! Our hosts were Eva and Jim and they were more than generous with the breakfast and amenities at their home. During our stay in the Pineapple suite, the restroom/kitchenette/bedroom were organized and had plenty of space for two people. It was easy to feel at home within the first few minutes after settling in. Eva was easily accessible for questions about the island/ local recommendations and was more than accommodating for our breakfast options (fresh local fruit, pastries, coffee, etc.). There was also onsite laundry, swim gear, and sunscreen/mosquito repellent. Whatever Eva was managing with guests, we also observed that Jim kept up with quick repairs/maintenance on the property. My partner's favorite part of this stay was the fruit and their dogs!!! I too loved their fur babies in addition to the view from the second floor deck (phenomenal during sunset). We are truly impressed with the hospitality and welcome that these seasoned hosts provided.

The east shore of Maui is thick with mega-resorts where you can pay big bucks for an oceanview…read moreroom. These resorts are huge. Most have multiple restaurants and bars, nice beaches, swimming pools, and other amenities. And people. Lots and lots of people. I refer to these resorts as "the ant colonies." I try to avoid them. When we're on Maui, we stay at Makena Oceanfront Cottage. You're 20 feet from some of the best snorkeling on the island -- you'll see turtles and amazing fish every time you go out (the cottage has plenty of snorkeling equipment). Snorkel out just beyond the rock reef in front of the cottage and float quietly to listen to the humpback whales singing. You can take the cottage's kayaks out almost every day for some exercise. After water excursions, you rinse off in the outdoor shower and soak in the hot tub on the lanai. On this past trip we saw 25-50 whales a day, including many breaches, while sitting on the lanai drinking coffee in the early morning or while sipping beer and wine, watching the sun set in the afternoon. In the mornings and evenings, we'd watch up to half-a-dozen turtles graze on the rocks just below the lanai. For dinner, we buy organic produce from roadside stands and "catch of the day" fish from places like Eskimo Candy Fish Market, and we pull together meals that rival any that we've had at restaurants on the island. Please stay away from Makena Oceanfront Cottage -- we want it for ourselves. If you're going to Maui, you're going to need a swimming pool filled with loud-ass kids. You're going to need a bar where they serve $15 tropical cocktails that taste like hummingbird nectar. You're going to need a beach filled with fellow tourists sporting angry red sunburns. You want to be at one one of the ant colonies, located a few miles to the north.

I always recommend this oceanfront cottage to my friends when they are coming to stay because this is the best place on Maui to stay. The cottage is cozy, clean and full of everything you would need on your vacation. The kitchen is huge Plus you're steps away from Makena landing where you can snorkel, kayak and swim without driving anywhere. The view is breathtaking from here - it's hard to leave this lovely oceanside cottage which is why many of the visitors call me to give them massages on the lanai. Out of all the places I have seen on Maui (and I have seen quite a few) - this is the BEST place to stay!

I have stayed in a ocean view suite and standard king rooms. They either have balconies or patios that lead out to the pool area. I prefer the balconies but it's personal preference. One thing to note, to access the pools, there are a significant amount of steps. You can take an elevator to the Bumbeye beach bar (level 2) but you will have to walk up and down to get to the lowest level pool and to the beach. If you have mobility issues, please be aware that this is the only way to access the beach. There are golf carts that the hotel has that can reach this area but double check if this is something they can do for you. This is my second time being there as a globalist as my first time was probably abour 7-10 years ago. honestly a minute. we were welcomed with the same lei and coconut necklace, some welcome juice non alocholic, and wash towels for cleaning the face which is all cute. they stopped giving water bracelets and its now just keys which sucks because how do we do beach activities and not worry about things like key card getting lost? they said its part of their changes. big change is their breakfast - less selection compared to before - i'd like to say they have gone downhill since last time I been around. The breakfast menu have changed in that if you want to have an omelette, there is no longer a self-help omelette station where you tell the chef what you want and they make it for you. You would now have to order it with a server, and the omelette is not included. also specialty coffee is also now not included just regular coffee, which tasted awful. Like many things about Hyatt, and this economy, this is to no surprise. if you are a globalist, they do still cover valet parking which is amazing, the pools are a bit overcrowded when we went during the summer, and the yoga mats all smell like feet, seems like they did not do much TLC in that department. The yoga instructors are all on a 1099 contract, it seems but the people and quality have decreased because of the 2 that we met; they were not friendly at all compared to the last time I was there. it just seems like a job for them. All the excursions that were included were all booked out right when we arrived, making it nearly impossible to do anything in the property. i mean it is still an amazing, relaxing experience. They couldn't really upgrade us because it was a full house already and kind of chaotic (we went during summer July time so peak season) It's still a newer hotel and had more TLC done to it than other hotels within Hawaii I'd like to say, but for the price point im a little disappointed. Also we had found hair and among other stuff in the bathroom meaning they haven't cleaned it properly upon arrival. I know they had recently changed GM and all but for the points i used to book the hotel, and the price mark during peak season I had a higher expectation no offense. the wings are all a bit confusing and they don't really have a map guide - the first day took me a while to get in the middle of the week of our stay the fire alarm went off at 3am which lasted a while, which i texted the front desk and they reassured it was false alarm, and then what was worst was 40 minutes later when we were about to sleep they said all clear like 30 minutes back-to-back, which became even more confusing and alerting - like if we were not awaken previosuly by the alarm, we are awaken now - but other than that i'd rate it a 8/10 experience given the price point, the lack of expereince we can gain from the resort. and if it isnt for globalist benefit, it would've def been lower rating. still a beautiful place don't get me wrong but just quite expensive, but i am sure if you havent been here when it was amazing, this would've been a 10/10 experience for anyone easy.

From all the reviews I read on various sites, Koa Lagoon was the best choice. After talking with Linda, the on-site manager, I was sold. My family, friends and I booked several rooms, including two bedroom and one bedroom suites. Everyone was impressed and very satisfied. I stayed in a two bedroom suite, room 304. We arrived late, and our key was left in a lock-box on the door. I must admit that the Koa Lagoon is not much to look at from the outside (kind of reminded me of a college dorm) but the inside (and the lanai) more than made up for that. The condo is right on the ocean, and each room has a lanai with an ocean view. Our two bedroom had one master bedroom with a king sized bed and a private bathroom, and the second bedroom had two twin beds and a bathroom across the hall. The beds were comfy and there were extra linens in the closet. The bathrooms were fully stocked with several sets of towels. The condos are fully stocked with everything you might need and things you didn't realize you needed, but end up using. We were pleased to find boogie boards, large beach towels, beach blankets, shade tents, a beach umbrella, a cooler, grill utensils, and everything you might need in the kitchen, except the food. Our group saved a lot of money by cooking in and grilling as we purchased most of our groceries at the Safeway nearby. The condos each have a washer and dryer and this was a huge benefit. We didn't have to return home with dirty laundry, and were able to do all our laundry for free in our own rooms, rather than lug them to a laundromat or community laundry room. They provided us with laundry detergent as well as dishwasher detergent, but we ended up getting more mid-trip to replace their stock. The ocean view is amazing, and actually, this condo sits in a great spot. We watched whales from our balcony daily, and also noticed some things that kept popping out of the water, but from our room, we couldn't tell what they were. Unfortunately, we didn't find out until our second to last day that the beach directly south of the Koa Lagoon (a two minute walk) is a turtle nesting area. What we had been seeing were sea turtles. It ended up being a great area to snorkel, and is fully protected by the reef. It is also a great spot for wading if you aren't that big in to snorkeling. There is an in-ground pool on the property also, and we used this frequently after we had finished our beach hopping for the day. Most of the people by the pool were residents, or long time guests, and it was never crowded. We had several people tell us they spend months there each year, and one woman even offered to let us borrow her kayak to go out to see the whales. We watched her kayak out right near whales the day before. Amazing. The Koa Lagoon is centrally located and is close to a lot of great restaurants & beaches. It's not in the heavy touristy area (that's a few minutes further down on S Kihei Road) and this was really nice. We always felt like we were alone in our condo complex, and rarely saw other people. It was great, because we used the grill every night and never had to wait around for it. I will definitely be headed back to the Koa Lagoon for my next Maui trip. Now that I have stayed there, I wouldn't stay anywhere else. The value, location, management, and added comforts were beyond what I expected and I couldn't be more pleased that this is where we stayed :)

It's as if they are taking care of our little home away from home, "a hui hou kakou" (until we meet again). The room had some nice upgrades and was well stocked as always and the common area is like being able to walk out your door to a pantry full of surprises. We enjoy being able to cook in our room so that we don't miss the sun rise or the sun set. This location has the best sunsets! You will get to know the staff as they are all friendly and accommodating. Jose will point out whales that are breaching; Teres will share "love and kindness" by making sure you are comfortable and have everything you need and Wade will make sure everything is in perfect working order. The grounds are pristine with the sound of waves and birds chirping and the ducks will greet you each morning in the plunge pools. It's a place where we can sit for hours whether indoors or outdoors and not feel guilty that we aren't doing something. We come every year in February to celebrate our anniversary. It's also located next to The Shops at Wailea, a luxury shopping mall. We were told that the resort was in the shape of a turtle, and once that was mentioned the resort map made it obvious. The resort is along a string of luxury hotels right by the water connected by a walking/running path. In the morning you'll see tons of people along that path. We got a double queen bed with ocean views, and the bathroom contained both a tub and a shower. The resort amenities include but are not limited to a gym, multiple pools (including an adult-only one), lounge chairs, cabanas, water slides, and a spa. The spa had complimentary fitness classes which we took advantage of. Some of them were on the beach and in the fitness room, but some are paid. There are activities like massages, sound baths, and other types of wellness activities. To use the pool amenities you need a wristband which you get by one of the covered areas. Only valet parking is available for $80/night. They also have a on-site luau which I went to although I've been to better ones. There's a chapel and we even witnessed a wedding during our time there. We also went to Nobu at the resort which I enjoyed. Although it's a luxury resort, some parts of the resort were outdated and broken such as the room signs. The room interior was modern but some exterior parts of the building were on the older side. The location and the views are definitely the selling point of the resort, and it's a place you want to stay at to take advantage of the views and amenities.

What I thought were rocks were actually plastic looking boulders. This would have been fine but on the walkway to the Wailea shops there were broken boulders so you see that they are fake and the pond empty. An eyesore. The room service staff were great and took good care of keeping the room clean. However the refrigerator in the room had been turned off and had a stale smell. Having 4 TV's at home and actually had a Samsung I think I know how to troubleshoot problems. As we were getting ready to retire we turned the TV on and were directed to the promotional hotel page. We had no access to regular TV. Called the front desk for help and they asked me "do you know what is wrong?" No that is why I am calling you. Instead of going to bed I had to wait 30 minutes for help to arrive. The problem ended up being on the hotel end and the problem was fixed. The repairman dropped his toolset in my clothing drawer below the TV and left. Which I had to make a trip down to the front desk to drop off. In addition to dropping off the tools I had received a letter in the room telling me of upcoming service and they needed 45 minutes in the room. Not sure why this maintenance was not done on the front end or back end when I left? Now I am getting annoyed and the woman at the front desk said they are SEVERELY understaffed. The manager did give me a $300 credit but the damage was already done. Our room was $815 a night. The pool area was a circus, which I understand because families want that last summer trip. A great portion of the pool was closed for maintenance, including the lazy river. If you want a nice chaise lounge with an umbrella you need to get to the pool very early and stake your claim. So you are competing for your space. One of the days the towel station was out of towels. If you want a preferred area or cabana you are going to pay. There were some positives on the property but the negatives prevailed. The hotel is tired and needs to be upgraded. Especially for a Waldorf Astoria. In retrospect I should have gone down the street to the Four Seasons or the Fairmont. Even though I am a Hilton Honors member.

My son and I were still in the pool on July 6th or 7th at ~8:20pm. I wasn't paying attention to the time. We were on vacation having a good time. Well I later realized the pool closes at 8pm and I genuinely hadn't noticed the posted sign. An employee (an elderly haole man) came outside and yelled "GET OUT OF THE POOL!!" to which I immediately replied, "OK I'm sorry sir, we are getting out, my apologies I wasn't aware of the time" and we IMMEDIATELY started leaving the pool. Despite that, he continued yelling "GET OUT OF THE POOL!!" I am not kidding he yelled at the top of his lungs at least 5x more times. To the point that I responded that we were already getting out and had apologized, and that repeating it was unnecessary. His response was, "Well, you guys don't know how to read the sign, so you clearly need to be told several times." Wow. I completely understand the pool has posted hours and have no issue being asked to leave once I realized it was closed. That part was my mistake. What was disappointing was the way my 11 year old son and I were treated after we immediately complied. There was no reason to repeatedly yell at us or make disrespectful comments. Guests deserve to be treated with courtesy, even when they've made an honest mistake. I hope management addresses how guests are spoken to, because this interaction left a very negative impression. As a suggestion, it might help to automatically turn the pool lights off (if this happened we would have left immediately) and/or disable the gate keypad when the pool closes. We honestly didn't realize the posted hours and those changes would make it much more obvious that the pool was closed while also preventing situations like this. Because of this my family and I will never stay here again. There are plenty of other options just as good or better on Maui. TLDR: The pool closes at 8pm! If in the pool after be prepared to get yelled at by the staff repeatedly with disrespectful comments made to you and your children.
