Well. The spam musubies were good. The Mac and cheese was flavorless. The sauces were strange. The riblets were ok. The chicken katsu tasted like it came out of the freezer (Tyson crispy chicken type) the pulled pork on the Mac was so tasty on its own. Tender. Flavorful. Oh the lumpia were awesome. Definitely not $72 worth!! Drive the extra mile and go to LL. The customer service was interesting. Lol. Idk. I might go back for lumpia. read more

Being so far out of the way, it took awhile for me to finally try Aloha Shack. I'm a HUGE fan of Hawaiian food and get it wherever it's good. It pains me to say I don't think I'll be making the drive out for this spot again. The reviews seemed so promising, and I was given pretty lack luster food. I was very excited for what seemed like what was gonna be better than regular old L&L. I got the Shack Chicken with their Ono sauce and it was a pretty basic flavor profile along the lines of most Korean Fried Chicken spots. The rice was also completely mushy, and the musubi seemed to be made the day before as the spam had no flavor and was all mush with the seaweed disintegrating. I can at least say the poke was fresh albeit a bit overpriced. The tater tots tasted like they had no seasoning and overall the food was just very disappointing for what we paid. Maybe I'm just used to my offerings back in my hometown of Las Vegas, but I would rather just stick to my local poke spot and make musubi at home. The service was amazing and the employees are very kind at least, and the space is very homey with the family pictures along the walls. read more

My son recommended Aloha Shack for us to try. I'm glad we did. Everything we ordered was very satisfying. We ordered Poke bowl and Loco Moco bowl and it was delicious. We also ordered Malasada and Banana lumpia for dessert and it was also delicious. We will definitely be bringing the whole family next time we're in town. Aloha! I finally made it to Aloha Shack! And boy did I love it!! Saturday night date night with dinner and music! Now, being that I live in South Reno... the drive over to Red Rock was a drive for me - a bit out of my comfort zone. BUT I have to admit, I was not disappointed! Upon arrival, we walk in to a crowd of lovely customers smiling and happy... can't help but feel happy too! My friend Peter was playing some live music with a couple of his buddies in his band. I was happy to see them and listen to their wonderful music! So we are greeted by a very friendly gal, ready to take our order. We met owner Chris and finally met Scott (YAY)... though it was a bit busy, so didn't get to meet Teresa! Next time :-). My all-time Hawaiian favorite is the Kalua Pork Plate $12.50 - Hawaiian style smoky and salty pulled pork YUM served with rice and their homemade Asian inspired cabbage salad tossed in a ginger soy sesame dressing. Ahhh heaven! Very delicious, and cooked to perfection, just the way I like it! Randy ordered the Kalbi Short Rib Plate $14.00 - Grilled bone-in kalbi marinated short rib served over rice, cabbage salad and their homemade Hawaiian style mac salad with black olive, onion and creamy mayo. Mmm Mmm! And to our tummy's surprise, Scott brings over a couple of delicious Pork Lumpia for us on the house- pork, cabbage & mixed veggie eggrolls! Super gracious! We had an absolute pleasant dining experience, very simple, friendly, a place where everyone seems to know everyone and to gather and enjoy delicious Hawaiian food! Vesta and I shared the Teriyaki Chicken Platter for eleven bucks at Reno's Feed the Camel food truck event, where the Keystone Bridge meets the Truckee River. We asked Phyn, the friendly food truck guy who took our order, to hold the rice and give us a double order of the mac and cheese, which he did. And I gotta say, the meal was great, it really was. What more could you ask for, being in downtown Reno on a cool night by the river, out with lots of friendly people and great food. It makes you think and feel like life is pretty gosh darned special. read more

I am loving the new location! I went in the other day to finally check it out. First, it's a long drive out there but it's all freeway. It hardly takes any time, plus you can hit up the Grocery Outlet while you are up north. I was pleased to try the Chicken Teriyaki. It was a healthy serving size with lots of rice and delicious Mac salad with it. The sauce is a thick and heavy sauce on the sweet side but more like molasses. It was excellent. There was a nice char on some of the chicken. I left there happy I had made the drive. While my biggest complaint about the food truck was the price for serving size, this plate for $12 did not disappoint. read more

This place is incredible! My husband is a huge fan of L&L and I think it's awful. I tried this place since it's in the neighborhood and am completely in love. It's my second time getting it this week! We've had the teriyaki chicken, the steak and the ribs, all are delicious! And don't even get me started on the macaroni salad! I don't even like macaroni salad but I can't get enough of the macaroni salad from Aloha Shack! Be patient because it seems like they're going through an adjustment period going from a food truck to a restaurant and they're trying to work out the kinks but they'll get there and honestly the food is good enough that I don't even care it's a little slow! So happy I decided to give this place a try, even happier that it's down the street from home! read more

We decided to stop by their truck outside of Chuck's market in Cold Springs Saturday evening. They only had 4 items to choose from, and since we were bringing the food back to sparks with us, we wanted to get something that would reheat well, if needed. We both decided on the Loco Moco. The good: The service: They brought the food to our vehicle. The price: Two people go out for dinner for about $20. (IIRC it was the lowest priced item on their menu) Portions: Enough to where you feel full, but not to a point where you suffer. The flavor, hands down one of, if not, the best I have had in Reno/Sparks. There was plenty of gravy and it was full of flavor. The egg was cooked perfectly. The hand formed patty was seasoned to perfection. I prefer to a medium patty, but they didn't give me the options, so we got what I would consider medium well to well. As a result it was a pretty tough patty by the time we got it home. The not-so-good: Location: I do not see us traveling to Cold Springs or Stead/RedRock when they open their restaurant. However, if we are out that way, I can see us coming back. The packaging: Basically there was a single bag with two bowls, covered with foil, forks and napkins. When we go how, we found that the weight from the top bowl popped the yoke of the egg in the bottom bowl, as well as forced quite a bit of gravy out of the bowl and into the bag, all over the napkins. I recommend better packaging or packing bowls like that into two bags. read more

Trash ass interpretation of "Hawaiian" food. They make Won Ton Soup once a week and serve it til it's gone or the dumplings are complete slime. No Hawaiian Sun drinks only a smaller than normal soda fountain selection with dirty nozzles. I ordered a Mini Bowl with Teriyaki Chicken & Mac Salad. The plate came out instantly and of course rice was steaming hot from being left on warm in a rice cooker while the chicken was barely lukewarm. It most definitely was not kept at proper temperatures on the warming table or whatever it was kept in before it was put in my bowl. I won't be coming back and I wouldn't recommend it, even with the slim choice of options in the Red Rock area. read more

Let me just say, I am floored by the quality of food and friendliness of the staff! Im poke bowl OBSESSED but have tried most of the spots in the Reno area and haven't loved anything until today. We went to the aloha shack for the first time this evening and ordered lumpia, a poke bowl and the shack chicken. EVERYTHING was absolutely incredible and I'm so happy they're in the north valleys! Aloha Shack has impressed on a number of occasions, most recently at the Feed The Camel food truck gathering at the McKinley Arts Center. While we have tried their Kahlua Pork before (and absolutely adored it), we noticed a new-to-us special on the board this time around: kahlua pork tacos in cheddar cheese shells. As in, cheddar cheese INSTEAD of a taco shell. It can't be true! And yet, it is, and it is glorious! The cheese is obviously just a little greasy (because, um, it's a big shell of cheese), but it was a perfect vessel for the tender, moist pork and tasty cabbage and, oh, sriracha mayo....yum! On top of absolutely delicious food out of a mobile venue, the folks inside the truck have always been so sweet and the stuff comes out incredibly fast. What more could you want? read more
